Energy and emotions ran high last night, and in a strange deja vu, Jane's Addiction at The Metro is once again one for the books. It was pure, visceral pleasure to see the boys back together again (with the addition of Chris Chaney on bass) playing the best of their old favorites and amazing new material. The thirteen song set ended all too soon, and left fans hungry for more. But it was quality over quantity. And Jane's Addiction's still got it.
They opened strong with Whores and gave the crowd a little tease with dancers. Then they went into a tight Just Because, Ain't No Right, and Then She Did. The crowd was right there with them on Stealing, Lies and Ocean. Then the haunting 3 Days took things up a level.
So many times new material takes a while to seep into the collective unconscious, and fans endure it while waiting for more well loved favorites they have a history with. That is just not the case with Irresistible Force, which is quickly living up to it's name. The energy stayed up and the crowd loved it. Idiots, had the audience screaming and dancing. Mountain was poignant and amazing. Stop had the whole floor of Metro teeming, writhing and crushing against the stage. Jane Says rounded out the strong set and capped off an entirely memorable show.
There's such a different vibe when a well loved band plays an intimate venue versus an arena show, and Perry Farrell and Dave Navarro in particular, made the most of the space and interacted liberally with the audience. Many male and female admirers took the opportunity to get hands on with the boys in the band. It's impressive to me that Perry's over 50 and can still pull off that frenetic energy and crackling sexuality he had over 20 years ago in the 80's. Of course, the gorgeous, soft-core bondage dancers didn't hurt any either, for stirring up the crowd.
Jane's Addiction still exudes that androgynous, sensual alt rock miasma that makes the darkest lyrics sexy, and has captivated audiences for decades. This show truly came across as a thank you to the fans. Amid the rock star posturing and showmanship, a good dose of genuine gratitude, and affection for the fans came through. As Perry shared red wine and chocolates with fans and Dave crouched at the edge of the stage and serenaded individuals in the front row, the audience/ band rapport was elevated from one night stand to long term romance. And with a 20+ year history, even an off again on againhistory, maybe that's just what it is.
Local Chicago band, Apteka, and Boys from Denver opened. Boys claimed their hard won spot as openers by nailing a national OurStage.com unsigned bands competition.

Laura Doherty Band - “Shining Like a Star” CD Release Concert, Sat. Oct.1, Noon at Martyrs!
Laura Doherty, Chicago’s pop sweetheart for kids, is releasing her long awaited second album, “Shining Like A Star,” with a full-band family concert at Martyrs’, 3855 N. Lincoln Ave. in Chicago on Saturday, Oct. 1st, 12:00 Noon. Tickets are $8/adults, $5/kids ages 1 and up. This show kicks off a series of midwest shows celebrating the release of the new CD, including Fall dates in St. Louis, MO and Madison, WI.
Laura’s musical adventures first took us into the world of big-city-living, as seen through a child’s eyes, with her debut Parent’s Choice award-winning CD “Kids in the City” in 2009. With an ear for a catchy melody, she takes us on a whole new adventure that explores the ways that children and families have fun together.
Laura teamed up again with award-winning producer Rich Rankin of Mosaic Music, and much like “Kids in the City”, her signature, breezy folk-pop sound fills the record, with sweet harmonies and acoustic instruments. “Shining Like a Star” shines with Chicago talent, featuring nationally-known kids rocker Ralph Covert (of Ralph’s World) singing vocals on the title track, and tap dance sensation Reggio “the Hoofer” McLaughlin, collaborating on a tune as well.
Songs like title track, “Shining Like a Star” celebrate the myriad of ways that children express themselves and celebrate their uniqueness in the world. Often painting a story in her music, Laura sings about the wonders of nature in songs like “I’m a Tree” and “Vegetable Party”. Together with fun dance tunes like “Hula Hoop”, and “Rocket Ship”, these songs are part of an uplifting and inspiring new album for children and parents to enjoy together!
Before producing her own original children’s music, Laura co-produced Old Town School of Folk Music’s “Wiggleworms Love You,” CD (2005), and in the past 3 years has recorded educational songs for Disney English, a division of Walt Disney Company.
Laura found her place in the acoustic-folk world early on, picking up the guitar at age 16. Originally from Westchester, NY, she came to Chicago after college and soon joined the teaching staff of the Old Town School of Folk Music, where folk legends like Roger McGuinn of the Byrds honed his guitar style.
For over a decade, Laura was the Director of the Old Town School’s early-childhood Wiggleworms program. In 2009 she took a daring leap and decided to go full-time with kids’ music, showing an intense passion for creating sweet folk-inspired songs for children and families.

On November 23 and 25, 1988, alternative rock pioneersJANE’S ADDICTION took to the stage of Chicago’s legendary Metro—the city’s destination for exciting new music--to launch their seminal, ground-breaking album Nothing’s Shocking. On September 24 and 25, 2011, frontman Perry Farrell, guitarist Dave Navarro and drummer Stephen Perkins, along with Chris Chaney on bass, will return to the venue, partnering with Citi to launch their newest offeringTHE GREAT ESCAPE ARTIST, now due out Tuesday, October 18 via Capitol.
The idea of big bands playing small rooms is always a special experience for the fans, but for Jane’s Addiction, this will also take them back to re-play some of their early classic shows in legendary clubs. Jane’S 1988 two night stand at the Cabaret Metro for Nothing’s Shocking are still considered by many Chicagoans as some of the greatest rock club shows of all time.
These Chicagodates mark the start of a one-of-a-kind series of two-night stands that will also take place in New York and Los Angeles.
Jane’s Addiction will also team with Citi to offer Citi cardmembers exclusive VIP packages, custom launch show merchandise and unique opportunities to interact with the band. . Meanwhile, Jane’s Addiction recently debuted their official brand new single “Irresistible Force,” which is now bulleted at #10 on the Alternative Radio Airplay Chart after only five weeks. The album also features “End To The Lies,” a pre-single teaser track which the band made available to their fans as a free download this past April. For their first new studio album by in eight years, JANE'S ADDICTION joined forces with producer Rich Costey (Muse, Franz Ferdinand, Interpol), with TV on the Radio's Dave Sitek on the creative team. Sitek, best known for his production work on TV on the Radio, Yeah Yeah Yeahs and the Foals, is writing, programming, and playing bass on the album.

It's happened again. The Autumnal Equinox is here! The light and dark side are equally balanced today, with 12 hours of dark and 12 hours of light. Summer's flown by all too fast. The kids picked up two bright red leaves from the ground yesterday and officially declared, "Fall's here."
As much as we live for summer, we're welcoming the cooler temps, riot of color, ongoing great music and theatre, and bountiful harvest at local farmer's markets! The Jane's shows sold out in minutes, but we'll be there covering Hideout Saturday and Jane's Addiction Sunday. We also have a feature on Perry Farrell coming soon. He's reinvented himself yet again and is laying down some sweet new music, with a new CD set for release October 18th. We'll be exploring his house music experiments with his wife and collaborator, under the PerryEtty title.
