REVIEW: The Wizard of Oz Via The Marriott Theatre for Young Audiences Now Playing playing Through August 7th, 2022

ChiIL Mama’s ChiIL Picks List

A musical adventure for all ages!

Theatre for Young Audiences returns to the Marriott Theatre.

The Marriott Theatre for Young Audience’s production of the Wizard of Oz transported three generations of my family to a just-dangerous-enough world of magic and brought us safely, satisfyingly home.

My mom, I, and two of my kids, ages 12 and 7, were immediately drawn into Campbell Krausen’s sincere and engaging Dorothy. We were quickly introduced to the Kansas crew; an adorable, living and breathing Toto; and ensemble players Laura Savage, Mandy Modic, and Matthew Bettencourt who created, with the surrounding screens and inventive costuming, a very convincing tornado.

When Glinda (Harriet Nzinga Plumpp, who also plays Aunt Em) appeared along with her shower of bubbles, my 7-year-old was not alone in leaping out of his seat and exclaiming, “Joy, joy, joy!”

Jacquelyne Jones as the Wicked Witch of the West (and Miss Gultch) was a perfect villain for the beloved crew to conquer. We all appreciated the non-traditional casting of Allison Sill in the role of the Scarecrow (with very entertaining physical comedy), the heartfelt performance of Michael Turrentine as Tin Man (his excellent tap skills were a super fun dynamic for his character), and Lorenzo Rush Jr.’s “Cowardly” Lion, who is very funny and, of course, courageous in the end. Kevin McKillip was the perfect well-intentioned bumbler as the Wizard of Oz (and Uncle Henry).

All production photos by Liz Lauren

Artistic Director Peter Marston, props and scenic designer Sally Zack, costume designer Amanda Vader Byl, lighting designer Jesse Klug, sound designer Brandon Reid, and media designer Tony Churchill—along with other tech and stage pros—made this an experience that held my digital-native kids captive.

The Wizard of Oz is playing through August 7th. Don't miss this!

The Marriott Theatre for Young Audiences returns this summer with THE WIZARD OF OZ! Families will relive this beloved tale of four unlikely friends on the adventure of a lifetime at the Marriott Theatre, located at 10 Marriott Dr. Lincolnshire, running July 8, 2022 through August 7, with a press opening on July 16 at 10:00AM. The production returns November 15 through December 31. THE WIZARD OF OZ features the classic musical score that has entertained audiences for generations including "Follow the Yellow Brick Road," "Ding Dong the Witch is Dead," and "Somewhere Over the Rainbow." This special one-hour presentation is directed by Johanna McKenzie Miller and choreographed by Tiffany Krause. Musical Direction is by Cameron Miya with Musical Supervision by Jeff Award winner Ryan T. Nelson.

“I am so thrilled to be a part of this special production of THE WIZARD OF OZ in the round,’’ said Johanna McKenzie Miller. “With the eve of Judy Garland’s 100th birthday this year, we thought this would be the perfect time to bring back this classic tale and relive the special moments that will continue to bring generations together and have the whole family humming along.”

THE WIZARD OF OZ tells the classic tale of young Dorothy Gale and her dog Toto who are swept away by a tornado from their Kansas farm to the colorful and enchanting Land of Oz. To get back home, Dorothy must first embark on a journey to the Emerald City, where the Wizard of Oz resides. On the way down the Yellow Brick Road, Dorothy and her dog are accompanied by three new friends they meet along the way– a Scarecrow who wants a brain, a Tin Man who wants a heart and a Cowardly Lion who wants courage. All on the quest to have their wishes come true, they come across the Wicked Witch of the West out on her own quest for revenge.

This production of THE WIZARD OF OZ stars Campbell Krausen as “Dorothy,” Lorenzo Rush Jr. as “Lion,” Michael Turrentine as “Tin Man,” Allison Sill as “Scarecrow,” Harriet Nzinga Plumpp as “Auntie Em/Glinda,” Jacquelyne Jones as “Miss Gultch/Wicked Witch” and Kevin McKillip as “Uncle Henry/Oz”. The ensemble features Laura Savage, Mandy Modic and Matthew Bettencourt, with understudies Isabella Abel-Suarez, Grace Bobber, Emily Ann Brooks, Jake Elkins, Michael Earvin Martin, Jenna Napolitano, and Nolan Fizoires Robinson II.

The Marriott Theatre for Young Audiences team will be led by Artistic Director Peter Marston Sullivan, with artistic associate Emily Marso, props and scenic design by Sally Zack, costume design by Amanda Vander Byl, wig design by Megan Pirtle, lighting design by Jesse Klug, sound design by Brandon Reed, projection and media design by Tony Churchill. The stage manager is Jessica Banaszak.

Guest Review

Chicago Shakespeare Theater’s production of The Wizard of Oz held surprise after surprise for me and my young crew. We watched the movie beforehand in hopes it would help my four-year-old to follow along with the play. As he wandered away from the screen looking for various forms of trouble around the house, I feared I might spend much of the play in the lobby with him.

I need not have worried. From the moment the house lights went down on an intimate Kansas scene to the raucous ending, he was enraptured, as was my eleven-year-old son who was there only as a result of some tough negotiations. My nine-year-old daughter, a fan of the movie and eager attendee of the play, thoroughly enjoyed herself. More on that in a minute.

Directed by Brian Hill, the cast played beautifully with the story and were supported by gorgeously minimalist set and lighting as well as heart-stirring music. Leryn Turlington was perfect as Dorothy Gale and displayed a sweet, rich singing voice that compares favorably to the iconic Judy Garland’s—no easy feat. I loved that Marya Grandy was cast as the scarecrow. Having two women in the traveling foursome balances things out nicely, and Grandy delivered a perfectly floppy, loyal, not-so-secretly brilliant portrayal. Joseph Anthony Byrd and Jose Antonio Garcia touched all the right notes, literally and figuratively, as the Tin Man and Cowardly Lion.

Jared D.M. Grant caught our attention as a caring Uncle Henry and also as a truly delightful addition to many of the Oz scenes—from toe-in-the-sand Munchkin Coroner to Emerald City Guard with a heart of gold, and even an awesome jitterbug dancer. The entire ensemble, that had an air of a Greek chorus about them at times even though they spoke little, was on-point—as was their direction and choreography. Theresa Ham’s costumes added a great deal to the magic, and it was lovely that they brought in elements of early 20th Century.

The Guard (Jared D.M. Grant) and citizens of the Emerald City dance gleefully in "The Merry Old Land of Oz"

Back to my daughter: she walked away from the performance pondering new aspects of the story she’d never thought of before. For example, aside from the classic approach of the people of Kansas appearing as different characters in Oz (and there is one lovely addition in that parallel for this production), there are physical elements which make their way over the rainbow. The program curates these parallels and elements in a lovely way and is well worth reviewing with your youngsters before the show or after. Woven in with this discussion, my daughter started thinking about all of the foreshadowing and came up with really cool insights. “In the first song, troubles melt like lemon drops. The witch is a trouble and she ends up melting.”

A major reason I expose my children to art is to ignite their own creative expression and outlook on life. This is never predictable, and there is often not an easily seen correlation. But the way this production takes things you expect to see and flips them in major and subtle ways (let’s have the ladies sing the low notes and the gents sing the high notes!), I can’t help but think that this is one of those experiences that provides especially rich soil for the becoming of a  young human, and even that of a middle-aged human like me.

This magical production is a celebration of the classic 1939 MGM movie, and will be presented with breathtaking special effects that will sweep audiences away, from the moment the tornado twists its way into Kansas. Featuring the classic songs, composed by Harold Arlen with lyrics by E.Y. Harburg, “Over the Rainbow,” “Ding Dong the Witch is Dead” and “If I Only Had A Brain,” along with the beloved characters, “THE WIZARD OF OZ” will have the entire family captivated as they travel down the yellow brick road for an unforgettable day at the theater.

Dean Sabon is the Director and previously created the national tours of “Fiddler on the Roof” and “Seven Brides for Seven Brothers.” Amy McCleary created the magical choreography and was the Director/Choreographer of the national tour of “Memphis, the Musical” and the choreographer of the national tour of “The Wedding Singer.” The team of Sobon and McCleary will take Dorothy, Toto and their friends the Cowardly Lion, Tin Man and Scarecrow “Over the Rainbow” to adventures in Munchkin Land, the Haunted Forest and the Emerald City.

Leading the cast as Dorothy is Kalie Kaimann. She previously played this role for the Children’s Theatre of Cincinnati. Murphy was rescued on February 5th, 2016 from the ASPCA in Chandler, AZ by Lizzie Webb (music director for “THE WIZARD OF OZ” tour) and was immediately welcomed into the theatre world. He has been a trusty backstage companion, a pit orchestra puppy (sleeping at mom’s feet while she plays piano and conducts shows) and within a few months of adoption he was onstage as Willoughby in “Mary Poppins.” This will be his second time playing Toto. live on stage at The Marriott Theatre!

Follow the yellow brick road to The Marriott Theatre for Young Audiences, 10 Marriott Drive in Lincolnshire, for the enchanting musical production of THE WIZARD OF OZ, running from November 7, 2014 through January 4, 2015. The Marriott Theatre for Young Audiences favorite Rachel Rockwell will direct and choreograph, with musical direction by Ryan T. Nelson.  Based on the classic 1939 MGM movie, this special one-hour presentation of THE WIZARD OF OZ features the classic songs "Follow the Yellow Brick Road," Ding Dong the Witch is Dead," and "Somewhere Over the Rainbow." A Question & Answer session with the cast will follow every performance.
