Chicago Teens from Actors Gym Chosen to Perform in The Chicago Contemporary Circus Festival THIS Sunday

Local Students Strap in for Circus Festival Performance

The American Youth Circus Organization (AYCO) has chosen two 17 year old students from The Actors Gymnasium to perform in the AYCO Young Artist Showcase at the first ever circus festival in the United States.

Alison Tye and Justin Durham applied to AYCO's Young Artist Showcase with their aerial straps act and were selected among youth under 21 from all over the country.

Since acceptance, they have spent hours in The Actors Gymnasium's space, practicing their routine for its January 12 performance at the Atheneaum Theater's main stage. The performance is part of the closing day festivities for the inaugural Chicago Contemporary Circus Festival, taking place January 6 -12.

Durham and Tye first performed their aerial straps act in the highly acclaimed 2012 production of Lost & Found: A Recycled CircusIn the spring of 2013, America's Got Talent invited them to perform their aerial straps act for the producers while they were holding auditions in Chicago. They made it through many rounds of the rigorous audition process. The act has only improved with age and attendees of The Young Artist Showcase are in for quite the treat. Tickets to the performance are currently on sale.

Both Tye and Durham are members of Teen Ensemble and long time students of The Actors Gymnasium.

The 2013-2014 Teen Ensemble. Top row, left - Alison Tye. Bottom row, center - Justin Durham.

Tye started out dancing, studying ballet and tap, while also starting skating. When she was eight, she found a flyer for North Shore Rhythmics and decided to give rhythmic gymnastics a try. Through it she learned the dance, flexibility, and strength that she ultimately used for her circus skills.

Tye started in The Actors Gymnasium Summer Circus and Performing Arts Camps with a friend.  Once camp ended, she decided to quit gymnastics and join the circus. Starting circus arts classes also helped her get over a fear of heights. Audience members say that they would have never guessed she had a fear. Tye says, "It doesn't affect me when I am performing because my love of performance is greater than my fear of heights."

At Glenbrook South High School, she was recruited for the girls' gymnastics team and made it known that her top priority remained circus. For each class, rehearsal and Teen Ensemble practice, Tye drives 30 minutes from Glenview with her parents who wait outside until it's time to head home again. Her circus pursuits have also taken her to studying flying trapeze in Chicago and the École Nationale de Cirque in Montreal. Tye graduates this summer and will be attending Illinois State University's Physical Education Teacher Education Program.

Durham started doing cartwheels before he could stand. When his mother signed him up for his first circus class at age three, it was a natural fit. An ardent student of circus and movement, Durham has taken classes at The Actors Gymnasium since 1999, starting in the Summer Circus and Performing Arts Camps as soon as he was old enough in 2005. Later he became a member of the Teen Ensemble, a camp counselor, and a  performer in several of The Actors Gymnasium's theatrical shows.

Like Tye, Durham struggles with balancing circus practice and rehearsal with being a normal high school student. Durham rehearses nearly every day, sometimes for up to 14 hours. This summer, he participated in The Actors Gymnasium's six-week, daily Summer Circus Intensive Workshop, where he was taught by renown circus professionals such as drama instructor David Catlin of Lookingglass and physical theatre instructor Dean Evans.  He also takes part in the Dance Lab and Menz Dance programs at New Trier High School as a dancer and choreographer and studies German Wheel under world famous Wolfgang Bientzle. Durham qualified to be a member of the US Men's Team at the 10th Wheel Gymnastics World Championships in Chicago in July.

Durham hopes that his hard work will pay off. He is applying to circus colleges such as Ecole National De Cirque in Montreal, the Nation Institute of Circus Arts (NICA) in Australia as well as U.S. colleges with dance programs such as New York University, Marymount Manhattan College, and the University of Illinois. He dreams of performing with a world famous circus such as Cirque Du Soleil.

Knowing Durham's dream, The Actors Gymnasium nominated him for the 2013 American Youth Circus Organization Youth Leader Award. The winner receives a scholarship to the American Youth Circus Festival. Among the many excellent candidates submitted, Justin achieved placement on the shortlist for the award.

What reviewers are saying about
Lost & Found: A Recycled Circus...

"The caliber of their circus arts is truly top notch. This colorful extravaganza combines all of our favorite elements...We were quite impressed with the cast..."- ChilL Live Shows

"...thrilled by the performances of the cast. The show features a tender and sweet storyline throughout with many moments of hilarity and humor. Lots of ideas are at work here, from an innovative reference to our tech-obsessed culture to an old fashioned boy gets girl tale." - Green Parent Chicago

"This sweet, small circus combines performances by professional artists, a spirited ensemble of semiprofessional teens, and a gang of precocious child actors. In less expert hands it could've ended up a cloying, chaotic mess. But somehow director Larry DiStasi and his team of talented collaborators have woven these disparate elements into an energetic, entertaining, totally satisfying gallimaufry. The props by Bruce Rogers and Mike Sullivan and the costumes by Elizabeth Wislar are delightful. The teen acrobats are dazzling. David Caitlin is at once hilarious and moving as a technology-distracted dad, while the other adult performers-led by Lindsey Noel Whiting, Will Howard, and Chris Mathews-give the show a heartfelt through line. And the kids (all children of Lookingglass Theatre ensemble members) are total scene-stealers."

Act Out: Top Theatre Picks-Lost & Found at Actors Gymnasium

Gala Fundraiser at Actor's Gymnasium-opening night of Lost & Found 2012

Lost & Found: A Recycled Circus

Back by popular demand!
February 11 – March 11, 2012

"This production will charm, warm and wow you…sly and nuanced clowning…wordless,  impressive poetry" - Chicago Theatre Blog.

"Director Lawrence DiStasi showcases a wry sense of humor and some superb acrobatics in this quirky Actors Gymnasium show" "Recommended"  - Chicago Reader.

We had the great pleasure of checking out opening night of Lost & Found at The Actors Gymnasium last Saturday.   The caliber of their circus arts is truly top notch.  This colorful extravaganza combines all of our favorite elements--aerial acts, steampunkery, a funky, rag tag band of urchins playing instruments and making mischief, a love triangle, technology as art, low tech fun, recycled and upcycled outfits, drums and toys.  We'll be returning to catch the show again with the kids as soon as possible.  Lost and Found is highly recommended, family friendly fun for all ages.   We were quite impressed with the cast, and the cast off set dressings.  We're also enamored with Co-Artistic Director, Lawrence E. DiStasi's statement about the show.   He says:

I didn't used to like old things.  They kind of depressed me.  But now, when someone takes an old chair or something, a thing that has managed, against all odds, to survive the world for many years, and they give it a little careful attention-I think it's incredibly moving.  And these things have so much personality.  It's almost like they're alive.  Like people.   They have souls in a way.  Unfortunately most of the stuff we all bring into our lives is disposable.  And things that are made to be thrown away, are sad company.  It's so hard to stay away from them, but who needs that kind of sadness?   Anyway, I think there is treasure in our garbage-in what we throw away, and overlook.   And those people we throw away and overlook too.  There is magic in our trash.  And probably our future there too.

ChiIL Mama has potential video interviews in the works with the Artistic Directory and also actor/Chicago Dad, David Catlin, who plays alongside both of his daughters in the show.   Saylor, who is 9 and in 4th grade, went to preschool with ChiIL Mama's Sage.   Saylor's younger sister, Emerson, is a 6 year old first grader and Lost & Found 2012 is her first circus show!   So check back with ChiIL Mama like we vote in Chi, IL...early and often.   We have lots of exciting things in store.

The Opening Night Gala was lots of fun, too.   We saw a zillion familiar faces including our past video interview subject, Director-David Kersnar, who can be seen HERE. (in his fabulous "Ernie & Bert style bed interview" with Mark Messing) on the set of Goodnight Moon.

We also sat next to an accomplished aerialist, whom we photographed and chatted with in the past, when she played Alice in Lookingglass' last remount of their namesake story.  We also saw familiar faces from CircEsteem, including Will, a talented high school senior, who plays the lead juggler in Lost & Found.   We highly recommend checking it out.

Lost & Found gets ChiIL Mama's GRRREAT GREEN SEAL OF APPROVAL:   99% Recycled! - Costumes, props and set pieces used in this show are re-purposed, recycled, found-object art.

Last year's runaway hit, Lost and Found: A Recycled Circus returns to The Actors Gymnasium! A collaborative original work by Co-Artistic Directors Larry DiStasi and Sylvia Hernandez-DiStasi, together with an amazing team of designers and performers, this circus production explores the world of second-hand treasure. Cast-off junk and cast-off characters are saved in this show and given thrilling, new life. Lost and Found: A Recycled Circus features aerial acrobatics, live music, and magical, found-object invention.

Last year's runaway hit, Lost and Found: A Recycled Circus, returns to The Actors Gymnasium.  A collaborative original work by Co-Artistic Directors Larry DiStasi and Sylvia Hernandez-DiStasi together with an amazing team of designers and performers, this circus production explores the world of second-hand treasure. Cast-off junk and cast-off characters are saved in this show and given thrilling, new life. Lost and Found: A Recycled Circus features aerial acrobatics, live music, and magical, found-object invention.   This year the cast features Zoe Boyer, David Catlin, Will Howard, Chris Mathews, Will McGowan, "Tommy" Tomlins, Lindsey Noel Whiting, The Actors Gymnasium Teen Ensemble and some amazing young performers.
