Riot Fest Wrap Up-7 Seconds, Marky Ramone's Blitzkreig, and free DVDs

It was a good run, but all good things must come to an end.    Riot Fest 2011 was 5 days of excellent music, late nights and sweet photo ops.   In the next couple of days I'll finish edits on photos from amazing sets by 7 Seconds at Bottom Lounge and Marky Ramone's Blitzkrieg at AAA.    We also have show shots from DRI on Oct 2nd at Reggies.    So check in like we vote in Chi, IL...early and often.


Here at ChiIL Mama, we know parents and kids rock and families come in many different styles.    When I first asked for press passes to Riot Fest back in the day I was told "You're a mommy blogger.   It's not your demographic."   I replied, "I'm not that kind of mommy." and there are a lot more of us out there who are not your stereotypical families.  They kicked me photo passes and the rest is history.  We've been covering punk, metal, blues & bluegrass, alt. music in many genres, music fests, theatre, art, 21+ and family events ever since, because life doesn't end with birth.


Most of the 80's punk band musicians who play Riot Fest have kids and many of the audience members have kids.    Some of them even bring them with and rock out together.   This year, we saw young kids at all of the Congress all ages shows, and at X and 7 Seconds at Bottom Lounge.    And of course some tweens, teens, and 20 somethings came out to Riot Fest with their parents and ditched 'em.    But it was still a multi generation rock feast.    This is your parents' hardcore, indeed.


It was great to hear and see the next gen of punk kin referenced all over Riot Fest.    We went to see Cro-Mags sweet after show at Cobra Lounge Saturday night and they were stoked that a 3 year old showed up at a recent show of theirs.   We saw a number of kids at 7 Seconds, and dug hearing "This is your parents hardcore" and "If we can walk together why can't we rock together".   

Kevin Seconds said he doesn't tour so much anymore and is busy with family obligations, but he loves to play Chicago.

He also announced their guitar player, Bobby Adams, just became a Dad for the first time.

I've always dug The Ramones but didn't have high expectations for the secret show after party.   Marky was the only real Ramone remaining and it's been a while since their heyday.   I gave it a chance because it was really the only thing still going on.   But I am so glad I did.   The show was amazing!  
  



The mohawked, tattooed masses lined up around the block to try to cram in to the AAA and the place just crackled with energy.    The combination of Michale Graves on vocals and the brilliant, timeless Ramones classics was lethal.

Here's the deal from their official bio:   With no signs of slowing down, Marky continues to tour the world with his band, Marky Ramone's Blitzkrieg, which includes friend Michale Graves (ex-Misfits) on vocals. In early 2010, they released their first single "When We Were Angles" with former member of Sheer Terror, Mark Neuman, playing bass and guitar.

Marky is currently in his sixth year as a D.J. on Sirius/XM Satellite Radio, hosting, ‘Marky Ramone's Punk Rock Blitzkrieg". Marky has also appeared on numerous TV shows including, The Simpsons, Anthony Bourdain's "No Reservations and ZRock.

Back when I started ChiIL Mama and ChiIL Live Shows, people said it couldn't be done.    Our thousands of readers have proven "them" wrong.   When I first asked for press/photo credentials to Riot Fest they said, "But you're a mommy blogger.   I think it's clear this is not your demographic."    I'm not "that kind of mommy", and neither are a zillion of you.   They kicked us photo passes, dug what we did with 'em, and the rest is history.


Parents go to shows, buy music, drink beer and get outta the house with and without our punk kin.  We still wanna see live shows, hear whose coming through town, check out band interviews, and get free new tunes.   Of course, ChiIL Mama doesn't discriminate.   Music lovin' non parents are welcome here, too.


Sure, we sponsor, shoot and promote cool kids show in the punk, alt rock, folk and other genres.   But we cover the 18+ and 21+ shows we wanna see, too.    We're the parents who drop $50 on a babysitter to see a $10 punk show.   And we're the parents in the bands who are still makin' music, despite makin' babies.   This blog's for YOU!

The Dwarves rocked The Bottom Lounge in Chicago Saturday night, headlining an excellent show with Nashville Pussy.    It was a bit of a challenge to shoot, since bodies and beers were flying front and center.    Despite the signage saying No stage diving, crowd surfing....blah, blah, blah, there were a good number of people breakin' the rules.

We have a weiner.....Dana D. from Windemere, Florida!    You've won Smorgasbord by Ratboy Jr.    We check out a lotta kindie music and this is one of the best 1st full length CDs we've heard in a while.  We highly recommend checkin' out Ratboy Jr. for pure fun and creativity. 


These guys even opened for The Levon Helm Band!   They also told us they'd played festivals with the excellent musicians in Rubblebucket, and we can see why.   Kids deserve great tunes too, and Ratboy Jr. doesn't compromise on quality musicianship!   


These guys specialize in funky philosophy, with hippy wisdom like "Wherever you go, there you are," and "If a bear sneezes in the woods, does anyone hear it?"       We loved their wiggy lyrics logic like Time is just Tim with an e and their unique mash up of styles and themes like a robot who thinks he's a pirate and an unmeltable snowman who might be an alien.    


One of our ultra favorites is A Little Bit, a sweet song about wanting to sleep just a little bit more, because the dream was just getting good and they don't wanna give it up.    I think we've all been there!   They're gettin' some well deserved recognition and acclaim, so hopefully Ratboy Jr. won't be giving up their dream any time soon, because they're already good-no getting about it.


Their sound incorporates an impressive variety of styles from alt-punk country, folk, funk, jazz and even rap, along with a funky array of horns, slide whistle, kazoo and other instrumental interjections.  This 15 track ride had us all laughing and singing along in no time.    


Their CD just yelps eco-friendly with it's recycled brown ReSleeve, and Ratboy Jr. continues that bent throughout their great collection of songs.   We love the song, Worms, a ballad about rescuing our wiggly friends from the concrete and returning them to the earth.   The earth love continues with the next track, Dirt, an ode to and urging to play outside.

Then stalk them in all the socially approved ways like Facebook and YouTube.   They're playing an impressive array of NY and East Coast shows including Mountain Jam.   Check out the line up HERE if you live out that way or are traveling that direction.   We're practically ready to get on the fun bus and head out East just to see these guys live.   "Rarrrr!"   This is one fantastic celebration of imagination and childlike joy that will have kids of all ages grinnin' ear to ear (even the so called grown up ones).  

Ratboy Jr. has been quite busy! After a spring and summer full of festivals and assorted shows across the Northeast, their most recent highlight was a special opening set for The Levon Helm Band. Since the release of their fist full-length album, Smorgasbord, Ratboy Jr. has been hard at work performing at festivals such as Mountain Jam (NY), The Green River Festival (MA), The LEAF Festival (NC), Strange Creek, The River Meltdow, and more. Smorgasbord has been receiving airplay on several radio stations throughout the country and can be found at itunes, cdbaby, amazon, and others. Ratboy Jr. is singer and guitarist Timmy and multitasker extraordinaire Matty (he plays drums and keyboards at the same time!) and they are located in the beautiful Hudson Valley. There must be something in the water because their neighbors are Dog on Fleas, Uncle Rock, and Elizabeth Mitchell. They are a rocking duo for all ages. They perform energetic, catchy, and sometimes improvised tunes with hooks and stories that will get stuck in your head- songs about robots, emus, and garbage men. Their live shows have been getting a lot of buzz. They seemed to have found the formula for a super fun show, a perfect mix of audience participation, hilarious onstage banter, and a slide whistle!

Timmy and Matty have played with big kids, like The Ramones, Dog on Fleas, Pete Seeger, and the guy from School House Rock! Memphis' Luv Clowns are destined to be your new favorite kids' music band, whether you've somehow retained a sense of childlike wonder or are surrounded by your own ankle-biters. 

The group boasts a roster that reads like a who's-who of Memphis musicians: Harlan T. Bobo as "Bobo," "Professor" Doug Easley (Cat Power), Alex "Cow Cow" Greene (Reigning Sound) and "Timot" T. Prudhomme (Fuck). They all dress up like clowns when they play, although the oft-kilter lyrics, penchant for hooch and quasi-creepy delivery ensure that they're just as much kindred spirits of M. Emmet Walsh as they are of Emmett Kelly.  

This ramshackle collection of tunes for tots has many memorable melodies, psychedelic effects and enough goofy charm to fill a thousand red wagons. This greasepaint gang has recorded a cockeyed kiddie classic. 

The Luv Clowns understand that being a kid is more than just being goofy and having fun--it's about being confused and disoriented sometimes, too.

We’re playing on the South Stage at noon on Saturday, June 11th.  Headlining the stage that day is Ezra Furman & the Harpoons, so you’ll definitely want to stick around.  Admission to the festival is free, but a $5 donation is requested.  All ages are welcome.
