About Chicago Youth Symphony Orchestras

Chicago Youth Symphony Orchestras’ mission is to inspire and cultivate personal excellence through music. After more than 75 years of music-making, CYSO continues to shape generations of young leaders and musicians. Students collaborate and create in a learning environment like no other, developing fundamental skills including leadership, teamwork, and resilience. We are committed to educating, encouraging, and empowering each young musician so that they may pursue personal excellence both on and off stage.

CYSO works with young musicians ages 6-18 in on-site and school-based ensembles, and offers community programming reaching audiences of all ages across the Chicago region. CYSO promotes and provides ensemble-focused programming because we believe in the power of community. A young musician’s time at CYSO is a pathway of opportunity and growth, but they do not walk it alone. By bringing together young people from across the region, CYSO students build bonds with those who come from different backgrounds and share a passion for music. They develop the skills necessary to thrive as an ensemble. Whether or not a student continues musical studies after their time in CYSO, young people leave with increased self-confidence and a deep appreciation for music and the arts.

Chicago Parks Foundation’s “Pitch In for the Parks!” returns with park clean-ups June Through October

HELP OUT: Registration now open for citywide

public park clean-up initiative,

inviting volunteers to participate in second season

Here at ChiIL Mama, we adore our Chi, IL park district and we're all about helping out. We've done past park cleanups and as a family we believe teaching children to give back to their communities is key. Want to join in? CPF needs volunteers from now through October. Volunteering is good for the heart and soul and helping to keep the city’s 600+ public parks clean is good for the environment too. Hope to see you out there!

The nonprofit Chicago Parks Foundation (CPF) announces the second season of its citywide volunteer effort “Pitch In for the Parks!” to help keep the city’s 600+ public parks clean. This season-long, family-friendly volunteer opportunity is now open for registration on an ongoing enrollment basis, with park clean-ups starting June 1 and lasting through October. Volunteers can sign up at chicagoparksfoundation.org/volunteer, which includes an interactive map and a list of Chicago parks.

Last year’s inaugural “Pitch In for the Parks!” initiative brought in 2,000 volunteers for 350 park clean-ups. This year, over 90 volunteer groups have signed up for the season—many of which are participating in reoccurring sessions—adding up to a total of 300+ clean-up events citywide. CPF expects this count to keep growing as the Park Advisory Councils, local businesses and community organizations continue to step up and adopt parks this month and beyond.

“Pitch In for the Parks!” is open to anyone who wants to host a clean-up group or join an existing event from the interactive map on the CPF website. Community groups, corporate teams and individual volunteers are invited to participate in adopting a park with others in their community. In partnership with the Chicago Park District and communities across the city, CPF is providing trash pick-up supplies, volunteer coordination and safety guidelines to support the parks’ ongoing maintenance from June through October.

"Parks improve our quality of life. The Chicago Parks Foundation's goal is to encourage park lovers and users to become park givers and stewards," said Willa Iglitzen Lang, CPF Executive Director. "The Chicago parks are enjoyed by so many and, this past year especially, we have experienced the value and impact the parks have on our lives. ‘Pitch In for the Parks!’ connects everyday park goers with the supplies and support they need to step up, pitch in, and make a visible difference!"

Volunteers who participated in last year’s clean-ups saw the impact Chicago parks had on residents and the visible difference made by this initiative. A 2020 “Pitch In for the Parks!” volunteer shared, “As a resident of Chicago, I want to enjoy the parks and to help others enjoy them. Cleaning up is a great way to lead by example and make the parks feel safe and enjoyable." Another volunteer said, "I pitched in for the parks to give back to the parks some of what they gave me: peace, safety, and mental and physical health. Cleaning the parks just felt like a good way to return the favor.”

“Pitch In for the Parks!” is supported in part by Bank of America, Boxed Water, Chicago Association of REALTORS®, and Chicago Bears.

About the Chicago Parks Foundation

The Chicago Parks Foundation (CPF) launched in 2013 as the nonprofit partner of the Chicago parks. As an independent 501(c)3 organization, CPF brings community ideas to action, raising funds and awareness for park projects all across our city and serving as a fiscal partner to 70+ local Park Advisory Councils. Benefiting Sideshow Theatre Company & Girls Rock! Chicago

Here at ChiIL Mama and ChiIL Live Shows, we love it when our friends play well together, especially when it's for a great cause. Sideshow Theatre Company & Girls Rock! Chicago are both long time favorites of ours. My daughter attended Girls Rock! Chicago summer camps for years, from age 9-12, and it was an incredible experience. She got to write music and learn to play bass and drums. She even got to perform on stage at legendary Chicago venues: The Metro, Thalia Hall, and Bottom Lounge twice.

As a theatre critic since 2010, I've seen numerous Sideshow Theatre Company productions as well, and they're a great asset to Chicago's vital storefront scene. Come on out February 8th and support both excellent organizations and have a lot of laughs and a great night out at the same time.

The Main Event

Their names echo through the ages. They come from all corners of Chicago, united only by one dream: to elbow their way through the competition and wrestle their way to the top. Who will unseat reigning co-champions Shaydes and Cursula? Joined by CLLAW’s Mistress of Ceremonialisms Harry Scaray, referees Beau K and Dick Douchee and commentators Vallery Dolls and Shirley Blazen, the line-up of not-so-lady-like ladies in outrageous costumes volunteer their time to vie for that most cherished prize – the bedazzled CLLAW gloves. Who will leverage their way up the bracket? Or bribe their way to the top? All these questions and more will be answered, and all of Chicago is invited to bear witness.

With their CLLAWBUX, onlookers can bet on their favorite wrestlers to prevail, and maybe slip a few to the referees to even the score. All CLLAWBUX purchased also go towards fantastic raffle prizes. HELP OUT: CHICAGO CHILDREN’S THEATRE AND GREATER CHICAGO FOOD DEPOSITORY PARTNER ON NEW “SERVING UP LOVE” VIDEOS

CHICAGO CHILDREN’S THEATRE
AND
GREATER CHICAGO FOOD DEPOSITORY PARTNER ON NEW
“SERVING UP LOVE” VIDEOS

Short videos encourage food donation in Chicago, feature
signature song from Last Stop on Market Street

Here at ChiIL Mama, we love it when our favorites partner up together, especially when it means help for the vulnerable in our communities. Kudos to Chicago Children’s Theatre and the Greater Chicago Food Depository, with the support of The Chicago Community Trust, for their rockin' video campaign to encourage food donations and volunteer efforts!

Chicago Children’s Theatre and the Greater Chicago Food Depository, with the support of The Chicago Community Trust, have released a spirited new Hunger Awareness music video featuring the original hit song “Serving Up Love” from Chicago Children’s Theatre’s smash hit family musical Last Stop on Market Street.

In the PSA, 12 real Chicago kids selected from Chicago Children’s Theatre’s education program and fan base are shown sorting food, having fun, dancing and singing at the Greater Chicago Food Depository’s main donation and sorting facility on Chicago’s Southwest side. Additionally, The Happiness Club, a popular education programing partner at Chicago Children’s Theatre, dispatched some of its top youth performers to add exciting, eye-catching hip-hop choreography to the music video, filmed inside the Lakeview Pantry, a Greater Chicago Food Depository partner agency.

The PSA’s signature song, “Serving Up Love” by Motown legend Lamont Dozier and Paris Ray Dozier, also served as the final number in the musical Last Stop on Market Street. In fact, the final scene in Last Stop on Market Street turned out to be a community food bank, where a grandmother brought her grandson to teach him an important life lesson about supporting those experiencing hunger and food insecurity.

When Last Stop on Market Street debuted last May, the Chicago Tribune called it “…a kid’s version of In the Heights…a celebration of a neighborhood and all of its diverse characters.” In addition to its final scene set a in a food bank, Chicago Children’s Theatre’s West Loop home, The Station, also served as a drop-off location throughout the run of the show. The set design even featured an on-stage sign for the Greater Chicago Food Depository to subtly boost visibility for Chicago’s food bank.

Development and production of videos was supported by a $5,000 Acting Up award from The Chicago Community Trust. The idea for the “Serving Up Love” PSA was sparked last May during the Chicago Community Trust’s fifth annual On the Table series, which convenes Chicago-area residents in conversations to engage in meaningful dialogue, develop new relationships and inspire action to make a real difference in communities. The PSA is one of 37 projects to receive an Acting Up Award from the Trust to benefit neighborhoods and the public good. The PSA was directed and edited by Mike Meyer, MeyerFilm Inc., Chicago.

“Chicago Children’s Theatre is deeply grateful to The Chicago Community Trust for the Acting Up award and the opportunity it gave us to celebrate the intersection of the arts with area nonprofits to enact real community change,” said Jacqueline Russell, artistic director, Chicago Children’s Theatre. “Together, we are helping address poverty, making sure fewer of our neighbors are hungry, and demonstrating how much fun it can be to volunteer and make a difference.”

“Raising awareness is the first step towards ending hunger in our community,” said Kate Maehr, Food Depository executive director and CEO. “We’re grateful to the Chicago Children’s Theatre for getting involved by putting together a lighthearted and creative way to tell our story.”

In 2017, Chicago Children’s Theatre opened its first home, The Station, a performing arts and education center located in the city’s historic and re-emerging West Loop neighborhood. The Station is the former 12th district police station, and it is profound that a place once reserved for a very different purpose is now being used as a space for community, creativity and expression. The physical location of The Station is at the literal crossroads between the vibrant Loop and areas of poverty to the South and West, making it uniquely positioned to address critical community needs, and unite neighborhoods across the city.

Since its launch in 2005, CCT has cemented its reputation as the city’s largest professional theater company devoted exclusively to children and young families. The company evolved out of Chicago’s need for high-quality, professional children’s programming to match the quality and significance of powerhouses such as Steppenwolf Theatre Company, Goodman Theatre and Lookingglass Theatre. In 2017, Chicago Children’s Theatre became the first theater for young audiences in the nation to win a National Theatre Award from the American Theatre Wing, creators of the Tony Awards. The Greater Chicago Food Depository, Chicago’s food bank, is a nonprofit food distribution and training center providing food for hungry people while striving to end hunger in our community. The Food Depository, founded in 1979, makes a daily impact across Cook County with a network of 700 pantries, soup kitchens, shelters, mobile programs, children’s programs, older adult programs and innovative responses that address the root causes of hunger. Last year, the Food Depository distributed more than 69 million pounds of shelf-stable food, fresh produce, dairy products and meat, the equivalent of 159,000 meals every day. For more information, visit chicagosfoodbank.org or call
773-247-FOOD.

The Chicago Community Trust, the region’s community foundation, partners with donors to leverage their philanthropy in ways that transform lives and communities. For the past century, The Chicago Community Trust has connected the generosity of donors with community needs by making grants to nonprofit organizations working to improve metropolitan Chicago. Since its founding in 1915, the Trust has awarded over $2 billion in grant funding to more than 11,000 local nonprofit organizations – including more than $300 million in 2017. HELP OUT: ORPHANS OF THE STORM WAIVES CAT ADOPTION FEES IN JUNE TO HELP FIND NEW HOMES FOR ORPHANED CATS

June Is Adopt-a-Shelter-Cat month
Free Medical Exam and Micro-Chip included with Adoption

Ready to be a forever home?
Come to Orphans of the Storm, where you will not just adopt a pet, but a “friend for life.”

Orphans of the Storm (OOTS), one of the best respected and largest animal shelters in the Chicago area, will waive adoption fees for cats two years and older every weekend in the month of June 2018. In partnership with Ruth Helen Wolf Animal Hospital and Animal Medical Center in Skokie, they will also be offering a free medical exam and micro-chip with each cat adoption. Orphans of the Storm is located at 2200 Riverwoods Road, and also has satellite locations in Northbrook, Gurnee and Highland Park.

In honor of June Adopt-a-Shelter-Cat month, the goal of the weekend promotion is to find as many homes for loving, adoptable cats by waiving the typical $90 adoption fees. (Additional vaccine charges still apply).

“As a longstanding Riverwoods institution, we have made it our goal to find good homes for all adoptable pets that are brought to our doors for 90 years,” said Gail Donahue, Shelter Administrator. “This is a wonderful opportunity for anyone to come to explore our beautiful facility and find the next loving and lovable addition to their family.”

The Adopt-a-Shelter-Cat offer will begin Saturday, June 2 and continue Saturdays and Sundays in June through June 30. All cats over the age of two are available for free adoption (typical veterinary charges still apply, although a free health examination and microchipping is included). Those looking to adopt should bring valid identification with their current address. It is recommended that adopters also bring as many members of their family as possible (including other cats or dogs) to ensure that the pet they are hoping to adopt is a good fit.
