For more than 400 years, Miguel de Cervantes’ Don Quijote of La Mancha has inspired readers and cultures across the globe. Lookingglass’ production, first incubated at The Actors Gymnasium, brings this literary classic to life anew in 2025. Somewhere in La Mancha there lived a man who read so many books about chivalry that his brains dried up. In this world premiere, Lookingglass transports audiences tiltingly and acrobatically into the dreamy madness of Don Quixote and his impossible folly-filled quest to bring good-deed doing back into the world … whether the world wants it or not.

“We are incredibly excited to reopen Lookingglass, in your favorite castle on Michigan Avenue, with this hilarious and inspiring story of a mad dreaming knight and his endlessly reliable squire,” said Ensemble Member David Catlin. “We are grateful to collaborate with the Lookingglass production team, our endlessly inventive designers and Actors Gymnasium, where our courageous and widely talented actors learn to fly.”

The cast of Circus Quixote includes, in alphabetical order: Michel Rodríguez Cintra (he/him, Don Quixote); Micah Figueroa (he/him, Sanson Carrasco), Laura Murillo Hart (she/her, Dulcinea); Julian Hester (he/him, Master Nicolas); Eduardo Martinez (he/him, Cervantes/Sancho); Andrea San Miguel (she/her/they/them, Antonia) and Ayana Strutz (she/her, Sister Sofia). More information on the cast and creative teams may be found here.

The creative team of Circus Quixote is David Catlin (he/him, co-writer and director); Kerry Catlin (she/her, co-writer and associate director); Sylvia Hernandez-DiStasi (she/her, circus and movement choreographer); Courtney O’Neill (scenic designer); Daphne Agosin (lighting designer); Sully Ratke (costume designer); Grover Hollway (sound designer); Kevin O’Donnell (composer); Amanda Herrmann (props supervisor); Lee Brasuell (rigging designer; Grace Needlman (puppet designer); Helen Lattyak (stage manager) and Aaron McEachran (assistant stage manager).

OPENING: Almost Wonderland, Actors Gymnasium's Fall Youth Circus November 3rd -11th for 6 Shows Only

ChiIL Mama's Chi, IL Picks List:
Almost Wonderland

Here at ChiIL Mama and ChiIL Live Shows, we've been huge fans of the excellent circus arts productions and classes at Actors Gymnasium for years. My own teens were in their youth circus shows the past 4 years, and only stopped this fall because they were cast in school shows and cheer that conflicted. They're hoping to audition for the spring youth circus.

These fun, high energy productions are a joy to see, and partner kids with top talent in the industry. As I review professional shows all over town, my kids often come as my +1, and it's been great to discover how many names they recognize in shows as people they've worked with at Actors Gymnasium. Quite a few actors, directors, costumers and more, are familiar names and faces to my teens now. Come on out and see the next generation of Chicago's circus artists in a whimsical all ages show. Two weekends, six shows only!

About Almost Wonderland:

Be immersed in multiple worlds in this new spin on beloved children’s classic tales created by Sammy Zeisel and Jason Clark, Almost Wonderland.

Dalice (they/them) doesn’t quite fit in, especially at school. Dropped into a fantasy world reminiscent of Wonderland, Oz and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, with the aid of a magical book, they discover that they’re not the only ones that are struggling.

This show is for all kids, even the kids at heart!

The Fall Youth Circus is fabulous family friendly fun. The intimate venue has limited seating so book tickets ahead if you can. Shows do sell out. Highly recommended. Don't miss this!

AT THE ACTORS GYMNASIUM, PEOPLE LEARN TO FLY – PHYSICALLY, EMOTIONALLY, AND CREATIVELY.

The Actors Gymnasium was founded in 1995 and has grown to become one of the nation’s premiere circus and performing arts training centers.

We are dedicated to bringing a new physicality to the American Theatre, through developing physical performers and encouraging ground-breaking theatrical exploration.

We promote our core values of creativity, community, and courage across three program areas:

1. TEACHING CIRCUS ARTS AND PERFORMANCE SKILLS BOTH ONSITE AT THE NOYES CULTURAL ARTS CENTER, AND OFFSITE AT A DOZEN OR MORE COMMUNITY LOCATIONS.
Our Professional Training Program and Summer Circus Intensive and serve artists from across the United States and beyond.

Weekly classes for students of all ages and experience levels reach over 1,000 students per year, while our summer and winter camps engage over 200 youth aged 9–14.

2. PRODUCING ORIGINAL AND DARING CIRCUS-THEATRE PRODUCTIONS, INCLUDING NINE PRODUCTIONS A YEAR AT NOYES.
Our shows provide students with invaluable performance opportunities, and the annual premiere of our Winter Circus features professional circus artists alongside our up-and-coming young performers.

We also collaborate with theaters ranging from local Chicago storefronts to major regional companies. The rolling world premiere of The Magic Play started at The Goodman before opening at Olney Theater (VA). We also collaborated with Chicago Children’s Theatre on The Year I Didn’t Go to School.

3. SHOWCASING PROFESSIONAL ARTISTS BY PROVIDING AWARD-WINNING AND AWE-INSPIRING ENTERTAINMENT FOR CORPORATE AND OTHER SPECIAL EVENTS.
We provide entertainment at events ranging from private weddings to major public parades, and everything in between. These events help support our mission by raising the profile of Chicago’s circus community and introducing people to this vital and exciting art form.

“Even as an audience member, the work you do inspires me into metaphorical flight. Every performance or class I’ve witnessed lights me up and jump starts my imagination and drive. Thank you for flying lessons.”

REVIEW: The Silver Whistle at Actors Gymnasium

ChiIL Mama's Chi, IL Picks List:
The Silver Whistle

Last Call. Must end Sunday!

The Actors Gymnasium Spring Youth Circus
PRESENTS
An Empowering and Highflying Adaptation of Jay Williams
Beloved Children's Story

**The magic of The Silver Whistle is recommended for ages 5 & up!**

Book written by Jay Williams
Adapted & Directed by Anna Basile & Abby Pajakowski
Circus Choreography by Sylvia Hernandez-DiStasti & Tommy Tomlins

It was our great pleasure to catch the opening performance of The Silver Whistle last Saturday, and we adored it! Actors Gymnasium has long been a favorite of ours for high caliber, playful and professional productions. They raise the bar on creative book based adaptations and original works while seamlessly incorporating stellar circus arts, live music, and superb storytelling. This show is my 16 year old son, Dugan's 2nd Actors Gymnasium production, while his sister, Sage, was in the past spring and fall shows. He has loved the cast camaraderie and welcomed the opportunity to work on circus choreography with some of Chicago's top talent.

Sure, the spring and fall youth circus productions are comprised of a cast of kids, but don't underestimate them. Auditions are required for these shows and the talent pool runs deep. We highly recommend checking out The Silver Whistle. It's a charming tale with a female lead, upbeat choreography, impressive circus arts, catchy tunes, and a great message. This is a good bet for multigenerational fun for ages 5 to 105...

We do recommend booking tickets on line in advance if possible. It's a small theatre and shows do sell out. The up side is, there's not a bad seat in the place! What are you waiting for? Go already.

MORE ABOUT THE SHOW
"Prudence the Plain" has never left the small village where she grew up, sheltered by her mother, the Wise Woman of the West. But now her mother has fallen ill and leaves Prudence with a magical silver whistle and a word of advice: go out into the world and live. Despite grief and uncertainty, Prudence sets out on a journey to create her own life. She encounters creatures of all kinds, a clever witch seeking the throne, and a one-of-a-kind Wazar. The Silver Whistle explores what happens when an unlikely hero chooses to embrace her ever-changing world and the people inhabiting it.

The production is an empowering and highflying adaptation of the original children's book written by Jay Williams. Anna Basile and Abby Pajakowski direct this circus theatre production at the Actors Gymnasium. While reading the story, they were struck by its illustrations - an entire world is brought to life with its beautiful, whimsical and often very funny images. These images inspired the choreography and circus routines, honoring the highly physical style of performance for which Actors Gymnasium is known.

WORDS FROM THE DIRECTORS
"We loved Prudence immediately because her so-called plainness affords her the freedom to explore the world without expectations and become whatever person she wants be. As an ensemble we asked ourselves, who do we want our heroine to be?"

OPENING: World Premiere of Quest, An Original Circus-Theater Production at The Actors Gymnasium

ChiIL Mama's Chi, IL Picks List:
Family Friendly Circus Fun

THE ACTORS GYMNASIUM PRESENTS THE WORLD PREMIERE OF QUEST, AN ORIGINAL CIRCUS-THEATER PRODUCTION,
FEBRUARY 11 – MARCH 19
(ages 5+/ run time 80 minutes - no intermission - no late seating)

This weekend ChiIL Mama and the whole family will be ChiILin' in Evanston at The Actors Gymnasium. This stellar little performance venue is a training ground with strong ties to Lookingglass Theatre and alums in theaters and circus arts productions across the city and around the world. Both of my teens have been cast in their youth circus shows and Actors Gymnasium productions have long been favorites of ours. We're particularly excited to see this production since it was written and directed by Leslie Buxbaum Danzig and Amanda Crockett's in it, two more exceedingly talented, long time favorites of ours. Check back soon for our full review. We highly recommend buying tickets in advance ASAP, as Actors Gymnasium shows do sell out.

Written and Directed by Leslie Buxbaum Danzig, Quest is Loosely Based on Leo Tolstoy’s Parable “The Three Questions” and Takes the Audience on a Wild Ride to Answer Three Simple, but Very Important Questions

The Actors Gymnasium is proud to announce the world premiere of Quest, an original circus-theater production adapted and directed by Leslie Buxbaum Danzig, featuring original music by Kevin O’Donnell and loosely based on Leo Tolstoy’s short story “The Three Questions.” Quest, part of Actors Gymnasium’s Annual Winter Circus, runs Saturday, Feb. 11 – Sunday, March 19 at Noyes Cultural Arts Center, 927 Noyes St.

Press opening is Sunday, Feb. 12 at 3 p.m.  with an opening night party Saturday Feb. 11 at 7:30 p.m. Performance times are Fridays at 7:30 p.m., Saturdays at 4:30 and 7:30 p.m. and Sundays at 3 p.m. Running time is approximately 80 minutes with no intermission. Tickets are $20 for adults and $15 for kids, students and seniors and are available online at ActorsGymnasium.org  or 847.328.2795.

Once online sales are closed, 1 hour and 30 minutes prior to the show start time, the on-location box office will be open. For group reservations and general questions call 847-328-2795. If online sales are sold out, a limited number of tickets will be available at the door the night of the performance.

Quest, loosely based on the Leo Tolstoy story “The Three Questions,” has the protagonist ask three simple, but huge, questions, setting in motion a whirlwind journey to find the answers. The hero with her sidekicks venture through obstacles, misinformation, slapstick fun, unexpected detours, music and songs, near crises and amazing feats of partnership in seek of answers.

"One of my favorite books to read to my kids is “The Three Questions.” It's one of those children's books that gives as much, if not more, to me as to my kids,” said Buxbaum Danzig. “I always thought this would make a great theatrical experience. And, when, Sylvia [Hernandez-DiStasi, Actors Gymnasium artistic director] reached out, I jumped at the chance. I'm a regular winter circus-attendee and I always love the spirit of the show - its mix of professionals, teens, and kids, its generosity with audiences of all ages, its joy, its rigor and its ambition.  Within seconds I thought aha, this might be the time and place for “The Three Questions.””

The cast of Quest includes Flora BareKate BralandDavid CorlewAmanda CrockettEdgar Ortiz and members of Actors Gymnasium’s Teen Ensemble and Young Artists.

The production team includes Kevin O’Donnell, original music; Sylvia Hernandez-DiStasi, circus choreographer; Tommy Tomlins, circus co-choreographer and Erin Kilmurray, dance choreographer. Other team members include Jerica Hucke, costume designer; Justine Brock, lighting designer; Isaac Schoepp, rigging designer and Grover Holloway, sound designer.

ABOUT LESLIE BUXBAUM DANZIG, adapter and director
Leslie Buxbaum Danzig is a director primarily of devised theater productions, working with ensembles over the course of a year or more (or less) to create original performances. Her productions often bring together different performance languages (dance-theater, clown-theater, circus-theater). As both theater-maker and audience member she enjoys the unexpected ways in which narrative (of some kind) emerges from shifting performance forms and logics.

Buxbaum Danzig has worked extensively with Lucky Plush Productions and is currently co-creating/co-directing Roominghouse, slated to premiere in Fall 2017. She is also a co-founder of the Chicago-based physical theater company 500 Clown. Other directing credits include Damon Kiely's The Revel with the House Theatre of Chicago; Redmoon's The Elephant and the Whale, with Chicago Children's Theater (with Frank Maugeri); Redmoon's Hunchback at New Victory Theater (NYC) and Rockefeller Memorial Chapel at the University of Chicago; and Float with About Face Theater. Prior to turning to directing, she toured nationally and internationally as an actor with NYC's Elevator Repair Service.  Buxbaum Danzig is an assistant professor of Practice in the Arts, Theater and Performance Studies, University of Chicago. She received her BA from Brown University and PhD in Performance Studies at Northwestern University, and trained in physical theater at Écoles Jacques Lecoq and Philippe Gaulier.

ABOUT THE ACTORS GYMNASIUM
Since 1995, The Actors Gymnasium has been guided by the vision of a revitalized American theatre: one with performances as thrilling as a rock concert and as mesmerizing as the circus. To that end, they have dedicated themselves to the education and development of multi-skilled, physical-theatre artists.

CLASSES AT THE ACTORS GYMNASIUM
Actors Gymnasium classes are taught in a 3,000 sq/ft gymnasium space that features a 1,600 sq/ft sprung floor and a fully rigged 24 foot ceiling. All aerial equipment such as the Aerial Hoop, Spanish Web, aerial silks, static trapeze and more are provided, as well as the equipment for ground skills such as unicycling, juggling, tight wire and gymnastics. Additional classes are taught in Studio 108, a 900 sq/ft classroom space that features a floating sprung White Oak dance floor, a fully rigged 14 foot ceiling, a handstand wall, conditioning ladders and room length 12 foot mirrors for aerial work.

The highly skilled instructors create a non-competitive imaginative environment where students can learn as much from each other as their teachers. Students explore their creativity, build courage, and develop community as they tackle circus and aerial arts, physical theatre and so much more.

The faculty includes Artistic Director Sylvia Hernandez-DiStasi, a second-generation circus performer, a Master teacher and an award-winning choreographer. American Theatre Magazine has called Physical Theatre Director Molly Brennan “Chicago’s Queen of Mischief and Make-Believe.” The Actors Gymnasium has faculty with circus credentials that stem from training at The Actors Gymnasium, New England Center for Circus Arts, Circus Juventas and National École de Cirque. Instructors have performed with esteemed circus and theatre companies worldwide. For complete bios,
