HELP LOCALLY: Sep. 11, 2013 Free Disney On Ice Tickets in Exchange for Donations to Marillac Food Pantry #ChiDisneyOnIce

Disney On Ice Invites Chicago-Area Fans to Help Feed Hungry Neighbors on
    National Day of Service, 10:30 - 11:30 a.m., Sep. 11, 2013
Free Disney On Ice Tickets in Exchange for Donations to Marillac Food Pantry

In support of this year’s National Day of Service and Remembrance, Disney On Ice is inviting Chicago-area fans to help feed their hungry neighbors with donations to the city’s Marillac Food Pantry.

Disney On Ice stars will be accepting non-perishable food donations from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Sep. 11, at the Marillac Social Center, 212 S. Francisco Ave., Chicago.

For each of the first 100 standard-size grocery bags of food received, up to a total of six bags per donor, Feld Entertainment will provide a free ticket to Disney On Ice celebrates 100 Years of Magic, appearing Sep. 11-15 at Chicago’s United Center.  Easy, pull-up donation drop-off will be available on the south side of Adams, just west of Francisco.

Among the highest-demand food pantries in Chicago, the Food Pantry at Marillac serves the city’s West Side “food desert” where, according to a Greater Chicago Food Depository study, more than 50,000 residents are food insecure. The poverty rate in the communities served by Marillac averages over 30 percent, and in East Garfield and North Lawndale, it’s closer to 45 percent. The Food Pantry at Marillac currently serves an average of more than 1,000 families every month, and demand continues to grow. For additional information, visit www.marillachouse.org.

Disney On Ice calls Chicago’s West Side home, twice each year, with a combined three weeks of performances at the United Center, and its producer, Feld Entertainment, maintains a year-round office in the city. For more information or to buy tickets to the Sep. 11-15 United Center performances of Disney On Ice celebrates 100 Years of Magic, log on to www.disneyonice.com or call (800) 745-3000. You can also visit Disney On Ice on Facebook or YouTube.

DISNEY ON ICE CELEBRATES 100 YEARS OF MAGIC in a
    One-of-a-Kind Skating Spectacular

ChiIL Mama will be there opening night... will YOU?!   We'll have our usual photo filled recap up shortly.   We've been part of the FELD blogger community for years now and it's our pleasure to once again be partnering with them for the 2013-14 season.

More Than 60 Disney Characters Set to Glide into
    Chicago’s United Center, Sep. 11-15

Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse and their friends from Disney’s MulanThe Lion King and Pinocchio, and Disney/Pixar’s Finding NemoThe Incredibles and Toy Story, will take to the ice for a grand celebration in Disney On Ice celebrates 100 Years of Magic, Sep. 11-15, at the United Center. Produced by Feld Entertainment, this fanfare production features more than 60 unforgettable Disney stars that span the decades, a sing-along score of award-winning Disney music, stunning choreography, elaborate sets and beautiful costumes.

With Mickey and Minnie leading the fun, audiences enjoy breathtaking production numbers choreographed by Emmy Award®-winner Sarah Kawahara.  Kawahara previously worked with Michelle Kwan and choreographed the skating segment for the Opening Ceremonies of the 2002 Winter Olympics.

Complementing Kawahara’s fabulous skate sequences are the memorable tunes compiled by music directors Art Kempel and Stan Beard that bring the wonderful memories of Disney to life on ice. Scenic Designer David Potts and Lighting Designer LeRoy Bennett create the mood and settings that showcase extraordinary Disney moments.

Outfitting this cast of more than 60 characters was the challenge facing Costume Designer Scott Lane. His dazzling designs range from Mickey’s Marching Band, to the “It’s a Small World” dolls, to the stars of Mulan and Finding Nemo. The bright colors and minimal structure in the Nemo costumes allow the characters to move freely in order to mimic the natural movement in water.  Renowned designer Bob Mackie also lends his talents to a red sequined evening gown worn by Minnie.
Scenic Designer David Potts, who has worked on numerous Broadway productions, creates a theatrical atmosphere on ice. Skaters weave around and enliven the “It's a Small World” sequence amidst sparkling floats that turn into a radiant light parade; a blanket of snow and an avalanche fall as Mulan battles the Huns; and a giant present is opened to reveal Buzz Lightyear as he’s first introduced to that favorite toy cowboy, Woody and his pal Jessie.

United Center performances of Disney On Ice celebrates 100 Years of Magic are scheduled for 7 p.m., nightly, Wednesday, Sep. 11, through Sunday, Sep. 15. Additional performances will be held at 11:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. The Sunday 7 p.m. show will be performed in Spanish.
Tickets, starting at $13, are available at the United Center Box Office, 1901 W. Madison St., Chicago, all Ticketmaster locations, on the web at www.ticketmaster.com, and by phone at (800) 745-3000. HELP OUT: Wigs for Kids #giving #wigsforkids

It's better to give than receive.   We volunteer year round as a family, but the holidays are always a great time to step up and help out.   This year, we donated a huge bag of books through the kids' school and donated warm winter wear at The Bright White show at Schubas.   The kids volunteered at a soup kitchen with their grandma and donated a foot of their hair to Wigs for Kids!

The kids have both been growing their hair for 5 years (since they were 4 & 6) and we told them it was their decision to either get a few inches trimmed or donate (at least 10") and help out a sick child.   They were both on board and jazzed to donate.   We measured it out at home and they both chose to donate a foot of hair.

Then the minute Sage's was irrevocably cut, she burst into tears, said she'd made a mistake, and wanted her hair back.   We had a lot of hugs and good talks about compassion for others.   She still cried for two days, and weeks later she's still wearing her hair up in buns so she's not reminded how much is gone.   And she doesn't want to talk about it....

Sometimes it's tough to give up something you love.   But that makes the gift of giving that much more precious.  Her empathy for other kids has already grown immensely, and her hair will grow, too.

FINAL CALL: STILL ROOM FOR ROGUERY

51 depressing weeks of rule-following and norm-abiding have finally come to an end: it's Scrabble time. Bring your most crooked comrades, beguiling buddies, and plunderous pals to 826CHI on November 10th-that's next Saturday-to play some Scrabble and raise money for our creative writing programs!

Teams of two fundraise as much as humanly possible and use that money to purchase officially-sanctioned cheats on game day. Cheats vary in their degree of skullduggery, but one thing is certain; teams with the most money can buy the most cheats, thereby increasing their chances of pummeling all competition into oblivion...even if they are horrible spellers.

You may not be a skilled Scrabbler, but are you a good cheater?

To form a two-person team, take the following four steps:

    1. Sign up your duo online,
    2. Call your grandma, pester your roommates, and beg your coworkers for cheating money (checks to 826CHI are tax deductible!)
    3. Master the "Q-without-U" word list, and
    4. On 11/10/12, demonstrate your cheating prowess and annihilate all competitors.

The tournament begins Saturday, November 10 at high noon. All participants shall gather in 826CHI's Scrabbleadium, conveniently located at our normal location: 1331 N Milwaukee Avenue. The tournament champion will be presented with the most glorious trophy imaginable and a custom-made Scrabble game, plus ultimate bragging rights for 365 days.

View the rules, cheats, and scope out your competition here.
