MEMORABILIA is created and performed by renowned Chicago-based Boricua performer Jean Claudio, described by the Chicago Tribune as an “excellent circus-skilled performer” who is “funny, charming and the most poignant presence.” Claudio was recently seen in the title role of Chicago Shakespeare Theater's CORDUROY, the Goodman Theatre's LUCHA TEOTL and THE LIZARD Y EL SOL, and Teatro Vista Productions’ THE DREAM KING, winner of 8 Equity Jeff Awards. Helming the creative process as its director is co-creator Raquel Torre, who is Claudio’s partner in artistry and in life as well as the Michael Maggio Directing Fellow at the Goodman Theatre.

The production is thanks to a new partnership between Filament and the Scottish theatre company Constellation Points.

Cloud Man has been specifically designed for audiences members between 4-7 years old, but Filament welcomes family members of all ages.

The Northwest Side theater for young audiences invites audiences to follow the clues to the top of Cloud Mountain March 17 through April 14. Expect magical puppets, inventive storytelling, and lots of clouds and surprises.

Filament Theatre, the Northwest Side’s premier theater for young audiences, is delighted to present the magical Constellation Points’ Cloud Man from March 16 to April 14.

Cloud Man features exquisite puppetry and invites audience members to follow the clues to the very top of Cloud Mountain, where the views are always surprising. The story is told by cloud expert Cloudia, who always had her head in the clouds. All of her life, she has dreamt of seeing a Cloud Man–an extremely rare creature who lives a quiet life up high in the sky.

A cleverly staged show featuring one performer, puppets, storytelling and lots of clouds, Cloud Man explores the ways we try to make sense of the world. It encourages audiences to notice the beauty and wonder to be found in everyday life. It’s a gentle lesson in the ways we can care for the world without controlling it.

“We are thrilled to partner with Constellation Points to bring Cloud Man to Filament. It’s been a delight to imagine all of the ways that we can enjoy the enchantment of nature and all its mystery while we think thoughtfully about what it means to care for the world around us. “ Producing Artistic Director, Reji Simon

Central to Filament’s mission is its effort to create new work not only for, but with, young audiences. Via school residencies and Filament workshops, young people will explore themes from the play to create pre- and post-show activities.

CLOUD MAN: Cloud Man will be performed on Saturdays at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m., and Sundays at 2 p.m. from March 17 through April 14. There is no performance on March 31. A sensory friendly performance will be held April 6 at 11 a.m. Field trips are available. Tickets: www.filamenttheatre.org

Beloved FORTS! Heading Back to Filament Theatre December 2-31, 2023

ChiIL Mama’s ChiIL Picks List

Break out the cardboard boxes: The Northwest Side theater for young audiences reprises the immersive, build-your-own-adventure experience that has become a family tradition.

Filament Theatre, the Northwest Side’s premier theater for young audiences, announces the return of FORTS! Build Your Own Adventure for a limited run, Dec. 2-31.

The immersive theatrical experience, which has become an annual family tradition for many, transforms Filament’s performance space into a cozy living room overflowing with cardboard boxes. Audience members are the stars here as they build magical forts with boxes, sheets, clothespins, couches and more.

Filament’s daydream-esque theatrical design inspires imaginative, creative play for all ages.

“At Filament, we say that the word ‘play’ is both a noun, something you watch, and a verb, something you do,” says Molly Bunder, co-artistic director for creative partnerships. “FORTS! answers the question: What would happen if we let the audience do all the fun things that actors usually do in a play. During FORTS!, the theatre and all its magic support you while you play. We are delighted to welcome new and returning audience members to FORTS! for our favorite way to play.”

In addition to standard performance, FORTS! will be presented in a variety of innovative ways in 2023:

  • ●  Adult BYOB nights every Friday night

  • ●  Sensory friendly performances on Dec. 9 and Dec. 17

  • ●  Field trip openings from Dec. 6-20

  • ●  Birthday party/private event availability

  • ●  An unforgettable Noon Year’s Eve bash for the whole family on Dec. 31

FORTS! is also spreading its magic to suburban Glencoe, Illinois, where it is being presented at Writers Theatre through Nov. 26.

It’s the first time in Filament’s 15-year history that one of its plays will be produced by a major American regional theater.

“We are overjoyed to bring Filament Theatre’s FORTS! to Writers Theatre,” Associate Artistic Director Bobby Kennedy said. “Nestled as we are between a playground and a park, it has long been our wish for WT to also be a favorite destination of young people. Like all of our programming, FORTS! is an intimate theatrical experience—only this time the stage is yours and the storyteller is you. We cannot wait to see what the imaginations of our young audiences conjure up using the cardboard boxes, sheets, clothespins, flashlights, crayons and markers filling our theatre.”

Writers Theatre presents Filament Theatre's hit immersive experience FORTS! Build Your Own Adventure for all ages October 19 – November 26, 2023

Writers Theatre presents Filament Theatre's hit immersive experience

FORTS!
Build Your Own Adventure for all ages

The adventure plays in the Gillian Theatre
October 19 – November 26, 2023

FORTS! is recommended for ages 2 and up, with special Adult Nights exclusively for those 21 and over scheduled for Fridays, November 3, 10 and 17 at 7:30pm.

Writers Theatre, under the leadership of Executive Director Kathryn M. Lipuma and Artistic Director Braden Abraham, is pleased to introduce FORTS! Build Your Own Adventure, Filament Theatre’s hit immersive play experience for families. FORTS! Build Your Own Adventure will be presented October 19-November 26, 2023 in the Gillian Theatre, 325 Tudor Court in Glencoe. I'll be out to play on Saturday the 28th, so check back soon after for my recap. We've given away Forts! tickets for our readers quite a few times in past years, and I've sent freelancers and their families to guest review, but I've never had a day off to enjoy it myself. Here at ChiIL Mama we're huge fans of immersive experiences that spark creativity, and I can't wait to check this one out.

Enter a world of imagination and creation as Filament Theatre transforms Writers Theatre into an interactive play-space. Picture the Gillian Theatre as a giant living room filled with couches, cardboard boxes, sheets, clothesline and more. When participants enter, the lights come up on giant towers of boxes. First order of business---build a fort! Maybe it’s the tallest fort ever. Maybe it has a secret room. Maybe team up with other participants and make a giant super fort. Maybe make it cozy and curl up to have a chat. Maybe take a tour of someone else’s fort and make a friend. With new elements added throughout the experience and lights and sound that take participants from day to night and back again, the story is different every time.

Writers Theatre Director of Artistic Development Bobby Kennedy comments, “We are overjoyed to bring Filament Theatre’s FORTS! to Writers Theatre. Nestled as we are between a playground and a park, it has long been our wish for WT to also be a favorite destination of young people. Like all of our programming, FORTS! is an intimate theatrical experience—only this time the stage is yours and the storyteller is you. We cannot wait to see what new worlds our young audiences create when their imaginations and cardboard boxes collide.”

FORTS! Build Your Own Adventure is both a play (the noun) and a play (the verb). Just like a play (noun), there is theatrical lighting, sound design, and music that shapes the imaginative journey. Unlike a play (noun), participants won’t sit in a seat and watch, they will play (verb).

FORTS! plays on Saturdays at 10:30am, 1pm, and 3:30pm and Sundays at 11am and 1pm. The experience runs 60 minutes and is facilitated by two guides who are there to support the journey and make sure everyone has a great time and stays safe. Audiences are encouraged to arrive up to 15 minutes early to participate in pre-show activities. All participants should wear appropriate socks or bring slippers.

●The experience runs for 60 minutes. Guests should plan to arrive 15 minutes prior to the show to enjoy pre-show activities with the guides. Shoes are not allowed in the play-space so participants should wear appropriate socks or bring slippers.

Filament Theatre Announces New Artistic Leadership With Molly Bunder and Rejinal Simon as Co-Artistic Directors

Filament Theatre Artistic Director Julie Ritchey, who co-founded the innovative theater for young audiences 15 years ago, is stepping down from her leadership post as she and her family embark on a new adventure. Filament’s board of directors is pleased to announce the hiring of Filament resident artists Molly Bunder And Rejinal Simon as co-artistic directors of the Northwest Side theater.

page1image57228944 page1image57213344
The board of directors has selected resident artists Molly Bunder (left) and Rejinal Simon (right) as co-artistic directors of the innovative Northwest Side theater.

Both Bunder and Simon have worked alongside Ritchey for many years, building Filament into a beloved Chicago institution for young people, their families, and a dedicated crew of collaborators.

“After eight years watching and supporting Filament's growth, I am excited to accept this new role,” said Bunder, who had served as Filament’s education director. “As families return to live performance, we will continue to reimagine theater for young audiences and to make space and time for connection and community."

Both Bunder and Simon view theater as a tool for community engagement and empowerment - a core principle of their shared vision for Filament. In her new position, Bunder will expand and oversee the role of young people as dramaturgs, curators, and essential collaborators on Filament productions - borrowing from her over 10 years of experience as a teaching artist and professional actor. As a casting director, performer, producer, and founding member of Filament’s Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Access committee, Simon’s role will pay particular attention to the experiences of the theater’s adult professional artists.

Simon added, "As a younger performer fresh out of undergraduate school, Filament is the first professional setting in which I felt seen, fully, as an artist and an individual. It is my hope to share this feeling with every single person who walks through Filament’s doors. In joining this graciously bold team of creators, I look forward to continuing to invest in Filament’s stakeholders and expanding our community and the families we reach.”

In recent years, Filament has deepened its artistic vision through commitment to youth leadership, launching the internationally acclaimed SPARK program in which young people curate the theater’s new-work commissions and then collaborate on the projects alongside professional artists. Decentralizing artistic leadership is the next major step in Filament’s efforts to build a business model that authentically centers the perspectives of young people.

“For 15 years, Julie has been an extraordinary founding artistic director for Filament Theatre. Her talent and creativity as a storyteller have won critical praise and built a loyal audience that returns to Filament again and again, even during a global pandemic,” said Jackie Intres, president of Filament’s board of directors. “However, it has been her tireless pursuit of a company that embraces radical collaboration with young people that will truly be her lasting legacy and contribution to the Chicago theater community as well as to the international community of theaters for young audiences. The board of directors is truly grateful for her visionary leadership.

page2image57322256

“On behalf of the Board of Directors, we are thrilled to welcome Molly Bunder and Rejinal Simon as Filament's new co-artistic directors. In her role as education director for Filament, Molly conceptualized and executed several new and expanded programs to welcome young people into the artistic process. In his role as associate artistic director, Reji led and motivated production teams, ensuring that productions could be safe, supportive and fulfilling for both artists and audiences during and after the pandemic. Together, we believe the care and commitment they have demonstrated for the Filament community, their artistic vision and their wide range of leadership experiences make them the perfect combination to lead Filament into our next chapter."

Ritchey will remain actively involved with the field of Theater for Young Audiences on a national and international scope as an independent director, playwright, educator, and advocate for the artform based out of Brisbane, Australia.

ABOUT FILAMENT THEATRE: Filament Theatre, on Chicago’s Northwest Side, has been creating innovative theater for young audiences since 2007. Filament’s mission is to create a more equitable society by celebrating and amplifying the perspectives and experiences of young people through the performing arts.

REVIEW: LUNA Via Filament Theatre Now Playing Through November 3, 2019

Guest Review
by kimberly robb baker

When you have no permanent physical home, where does your sense of place come from?

For Soledad, the daughter of migrant farm workers, it comes from her parents and from Luna, the moon, who follows her wherever she goes. As the audience, we too are grounded by the ever-presence of the small nuclear family and the moon as we shift with them in a non-traditional seating arrangement that requires us to relocate so that a new home, school, or workplace can be set up for Soledad and her parents.

Also, audience members become stars who are the moon’s friend and help the story along, even advising Soledad on what to do when she grievously hurts Luna’s feelings, causing her to vanish from the sky.

We liked that farm workers were portrayed in the context of their personal lives. They were humanized and we were reminded that there are people who travel constantly and work very hard so that we can stay at home and enjoy all kinds of fruits and vegetables.

We also liked that the play was bilingual, in both English and Spanish.

Most of all, we liked learning that the needs of children are just as important as the needs of adults and that “Taking risks is hard to do, but taking risks builds courage too.”

While the younger children in the audience were active and enthusiastic participants, the 11-year-old and adults in our party found we had learned a lot and had the foundation for some good post-show discussions.

Our family was enchanted with this—more than a play—this experience. Yours will be too.

*Note: The role of Soledad usually played by Aissa Guerra was performed by Samantha Nieves at the press opening we saw.

Filament Theatre brings to the stage Ramón Esquivel’s Luna directed by Filament Resident Artist Alejandro Tey, playing September 21 - November 3 at Filament Theatre, 4041 N Milwaukee Avenue, Chicago. This story about the daughter of migrant farm workers was developed in collaboration with elementary children in Mattawa, WA, a town predominantly populated by migrant farmers. Filament’s interactive and embracing style will welcome young people and families on a journey toward friendship and belonging. Tickets are currently available at www.filamenttheatre.org/luna.

Luna tells the hopeful story of Soledad, a young girl who dances with the stars and sings with the moon. Her family follows the crops and with every move comes a new school and the struggle to make new friends. The imaginative Soledad finds solace in her constant companion, Luna — the moon. On her search for human friendship Soledad must challenge the world she knows and discover that “Taking risks is hard to do, but taking risks builds courage too.”

In an artistic statement, playwright Ramón Esquivel wrote, “My stories are about the search for belonging. They are about vulnerability. Most of all, my stories are about conflict between people who love each other. I hope my stories inspire empathy, connection, and wisdom—and that they make audiences laugh along the way.”

The press opening is Saturday, September 28 @ 2:30pm and Sunday, September 29 @ 1pm.

Luna will feature Filament Resident Artist Aissa Guerra with Jean Claudio, Gaby FeBland, Mateo Hernandez, Deanalís Resto, and Raquel Torre. Understudies include Elizabeth Nungaray and Isaura Flores.

The production team for Luna includes direction by Alejandro Tey, set design by Amy Gilman, costume design by Stephanie Taylor, sound design by Sarah Espinoza, lighting design by Ellie Humphrys, and stage management by Natalie Cohen. Produced by special arrangement with The Dramatic Publishing Company, Inc., Woodstock, Illinois. Luna is supported in part by production sponsors Lyons Family Eye Care and Dr. Dominick and Sylvia Maino and preview sponsor the Stephanie Cutter Group.

REVIEW: THE MIRACULOUS JOURNEY OF EDWARD TULANE at Filament Theatre Through May 26, 2019

ChiIL Mama’s Chi, IL Picks List
THE MIRACULOUS JOURNEY OF EDWARD TULANE

Through May 26, 2019

Sensory-friendly performance on Sunday, April 28th

Guest Review
by kimberly robb baker

The Filament Theatre’s production of Edward Tulane is as epic a journey in emotions, time, and place as one could hope to experience in 75 minutes. The play, adapted by Dwayne Harford, is based on Kate DiCamillo’s bestselling book of a self-involved porcelain bunny—from the best dollmaker in Paris, if you please. He is loved by the girl Abilene, played by Mariah Copeland, but he neither appreciates nor returns her love.

Edward is a gift from Abilene’s mysterious grandmother, Pellegrina, portrayed with a really creepy, nonchalant scariness by Juanita Andersen. She sees his nature and, perhaps, is instrumental in instigating his life-altering fall from a ship.

From the bottom of the sea, Edward begins to think on things. The adventures he has, people he meets, and love he experiences are deeply touching—and surprising given that Edward cannot move or speak.

Enter his alter-ego, voiced by Nik Kmiecik in words and a very sweet mandolin, allow us to very actively witness Edward’s transformation.

Alejandro Tey plays Abilene’s father. He, Andersen, and Copeland bring to life a diverse cast of characters, from old fisher-people to hobos to farm owners and workers and more. The cast is extraordinary, as individuals embodying several very different people and as a group. They were so present with each other and true to each character they played, that I would have felt seemingly the entire range of human emotion had the play happened in a black box with a single spotlight.

The production, however, was imaginative and beautiful. From set to lighting to props—and the interplay of all those elements with each other and the cast—a charming world was created and the audience, adult and child, was enraptured from start to finish. Expect twists and turns, tears of sorrow and joy, and a deeper understanding of love with all its risks.

Bonus: One nine-year-old in our party is now excited to read the book!

I had a chance to catch this stellar story a few years back at Chicago Children's Theatre and it's truly a treat to see this family friendly favorite come to life on stage. We're so excited Filament Theatre's mounting this production this spring.

Filament Theatre brings to the stage The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane, now playing through May 26 at Filament Theatre, 4041 N Milwaukee Avenue, Chicago. Based on Newbery Award winner Kate DiCamillo’s best selling book, adaptor Dwayne Harford has crafted the beloved story for the stage. Director Kathryn Walsh returns to Filament Theatre to bring new life into what the Chicago Tribune calls “the most charming of narratives.” Single tickets are currently available at www.filamenttheatre.org/edward

The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane will feature Nik Kmiecik as the Musician voicing the inner thoughts of Edward Tulane with Juanita Andersen, Mariah Copeland, and Filament Resident Artist Alejandro Tey filling out the rest of the characters. Kathryn Incardona and Laila Sauer will understudy.

The cast of Filament Theatre’s The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane (top, l to r): Juanita Andersen, Mariah Copeland (bottom, l to r): Nik Kmiecik, Alejandro Tey.

The production team for Edward Tulane includes direction by Kathryn Walsh, original music by Filament Resident Artist Timothy McNulty, costume design by Filament Resident Artist Noël Huntzinger, set design by Sarah Watkins, sound design by Matthew Chapman, lighting design by Jessica Carson, stage management by Sarah Collogne and Emma Franklin, with production assistance from Danny Kapinos, Cat Perez and Auden Granger.

In the words of one young Filament patron, the story of Edward Tulane is “happy, then sad, then all mixed up.” Edward Tulane is an expensive toy rabbit made of china. He is loved by a little girl named Abilene, but Edward has no interest in anyone other than himself. On an ocean voyage, Edward is accidentally thrown overboard and sinks to the bottom of the sea. So begins his journey—a journey over which he has no control, for he is a toy rabbit. He can neither move nor speak. As years pass by, Edward meets many different people in many different situations. Through this miraculous journey, Edward learns what it is to love, what it is to lose that love, and how to find the courage to love again.

Produced by special arrangement with The Dramatic Publishing Company, Inc., Woodstock, Illinois. The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane was originally commissioned, developed and produced at Childsplay in Tempe, Ariz. David P. Saar, artistic director; Steve Martin, managing director.
