Counter Culture Coffee Uppers & Downers Festival Celebrates Coffee, Beer, and The Marriage of The Two.

Here at ChiIL Mama, we're huge fans of both coffee and beer. So the Uppers & Downers Festival in Chicago is a natural fit.

This year we were excited to hear Counter Culture Coffee will be sponsoring and hosting events this week at the Uppers & Downers festival in Chicago. The event, founded by 2008 World Barista Champion Stephen Morrissey and Good Beer Hunting, is in its fourth year. It’s hosted in historic Thalia Hall, and celebrates coffee, beer, and the marriage of the two.

The week-long festival showcases craft beer and specialty coffee from around the country and entices brew enthusiasts with competitions, tastings, educational classes, and more.

In addition to being a featured coffee roaster, Counter Culture is sponsoring the Irish cocktail competition on February 20 and  co-sponsoring a home espresso bar with La Marzocco at the main event on February 24.

Uppers and Downers celebrates its fourth year this year.

Two North Carolina breweries—Brewery Bhavana from Raleigh, and Burial Beer Company out of Asheville—will also be in attendance and will be unveiling c  ase studies that use Counter Culture Coffee. The two companies partnered, individually, with Counter Culture’s coffee department, tasting and testing different coffees to create experimental beers. Last year, Counter Culture and Brewery Bhavana hosted a mini case study around Bhavana’s Single Origin Saison at the coffee company’s headquarters in Durham.

“ This year we are continuing our educational approach to coffee beer by featuring the flavors that exist from processing coffees differently,” says Patrick Woodson, co-founder and head brewer at Brewery Bhavana. “Our goal is to help attendees better understand the difference in flavor that results from the processing methods. We believe that Counter Culture does an amazing job of working directly with farmers and telling their stories, and we hope to continue that tradition through the beer.“

Uppers & Downers celebrates creativity and collaboration between both industries and comes at a time when specialty coffee is seeing a rise in interest, just like craft beer did, a few years ago.

Jesse Gordon, a Counter Culture regional educator in Durham, speaking at the event with Brewery Bhavana last year.

“ We love coffee,” says Doug Reiser, co-founder and COO of Burial Beer Company. “It is the ingredient we are most excited to work with in the brewery, and the industry we are most excited to see keep growing. It parallels what is happening in craft beer and we hope to see more camaraderie and collaboration in the space as it grows. This event ties the two together in such a wonderful way.”

Uppers and Downers kicks off Tuesday with the cocktail competition and takes place through Sunday. More information including tickets can be found at  goodbeerhunting.com.

Chicago Shakespeare Theater (CST) and Thalia Hall partner to present a two-night-only concert event from Belgium as part of the yearlong Shakespeare 400 Chicago celebration—Theater Zuidpool’s Macbeth. A dynamic and feverish production bordering between underground opera and rock concert, this Macbeth is a music theater deconstruction of one of Shakespeare’s most recognizable works with an original score in English by two of Belgium’s greatest alternative musicians, Mauro Pawlowski (of dEUS) and Tijs Delbeke(of Sir Yes Sir).

Performed in English

The musicians weave together various rock, folk, alternative and operatic musical styles to create a dialogue between Macbeth and his wife, telling the story of their bloody takeover of the Scottish throne. This wholly unique musical experience is presented at Pilsen’s famed concert venue Thalia Hall, August 21 & 22 at 8:30 p.m. (doors open at 7:30 p.m.).

The visceral rendering of the Bard’s chilling tragedy has entranced music critics and Shakespeare lovers alike. Belgium’s DeMorgen raves “never seen anything like this before...Theater Zuidpool transforms Shakespeare’sMacbeth into an underground-like opera, provocative and modulating with an arsenal of musical genres, and poetry used as a weapon.” Cutting Edge says, “The ensemble brings Shakespeare’s musical poetry to life. ThisMacbeth shows how you can move the boundaries of theatre." De Standaard calls it “a startling Zuidpool-creation... Not often is the dim discomfort of Macbeth so precisely touched upon.”

Known for its surprising and uncompromising works, Theater Zuidpool is a professional Belgian theater company led by Artistic Directors Jorgen Cassier, Koen van Kaam and Sofie Decleir—all actors, musicians, directors, translators and writers. Zuidpool works with material from a wide variety of eras, traditions and media. Since 2005, they've created more than 20 co-productions, ranging from the classical Greek repertoire to Shakespeare, Goethe, Beckett and Fosse.

The dynamic Macbeth company includes actor-musicians Jorgen Cassier, Sofie Decleir, Arne Leurentop,Femke Heijens, Sjoerd Bruil and Koen van Kamm.
