Baby's first Iggy Pop show?

ChiIL Mama/ChiIL Live Shows had press credentials for all 3 days of Riot Fest in Chicago's Humboldt Park.

Reverend Horton Heat

The day long hours and outdoor space made it easier than ever for families to walk together and rock together.   The next generation of rockers and their punk parents were out in force.   Check out our best of shots here including pit photos of the bands and plenty of punk kin in the crowds.

Photo filled features:

All punks don't die young.   Some spawn punk kin and start raising the bar on rockin' kids' music.

We're particularly excited about  Mike Park's Fun Fun Records label. Mike Park, well known in the punk community for Asian Man Records, has a couple kids of his own now and a kindie album, Smile that came out in September of 2011 on Asian Man Records.

**Two of his label releases are in our give away today, Kepi for Kids and Play Date Imagination, both out October of 2012.**

About Mike Park

In the fall of 1985, Mike Park began his journey in the music world. His first band Psychiatric Disorder, played blistering punk rock influenced by BLACK FLAG, 7 SECONDS, MINOR THREAT, and THE MINUTEMEN. Unfortunately, the band was horrible. But that was more than twenty five years ago and though the music has changed, the philosophy of punk has remained a staple in the life of Mr. Park. As a member of the now defunct band Skankin' Pickle, Mike Park was able to release five full length records, tour fourteen countries, and make his mark in the independent music world.

In November of 2003, Park released his first solo record entitled "FOR THE LOVE OF MUSIC." 2004 saw Park on the road for the first time since 1996, touring with artists such as CURSIVE, SAUL WILLIAMS, ALKALINE TRIO, and ANTI-FLAG. The follow up release entitled "NORTH HANGOOK FALLING" was released on August 23rd, 2005, and may provide the most personal look into Mike Park to date. Lyrics about politics, race, war and his everyday experiences will surely be a breath of fresh air in an industry void of much substance.

In 2006 Park welcomed his first child, daughter Maggie Elizabeth Park to the world. A year off from music and then a second child in 2008 (Moses Young Park) brought much change for Mr. Park, but his newfound love for fatherhood has given him new direction. On August 20th, 2011, Park released his first children's album titled "SMILE". Park's son and daughter have given their seal of approval on this one. If you don't like the record, they are to blame. 12 tracks that deal with crossing the street, dancing like a worm, and eating apples. YES, very political!! The tracks are high energy mixing SKA and INDIE POP sounds that will get the kids jumping and ready for nap time.

About Kepi Ghoulie (The Groovie Ghoulies) *win Kepi for kids right here

Over the last two decades, self-proclaimed rock & roll shark Kepi Ghoulie has toured the world countless times, both solo and as the charismatic frontman of pop-punk cult-heroes The Groovie Ghoulies.

Whether he's singing about the friendly folks who live in Kepiland, or his best friend, The Beast with Five Hands, Kepi For Kids, delivers more of the same lighthearted energy that has endeared Kepi to his fans for years, and is guaranteed to bring fun to children and parents alike.

About Play Date (The Bouncing Souls) *win it here

What in the world is that, way up in the sky? A Bird? A Plane? A Unicorn? A Unicorn-Pegasus! No... It’s Play Date!

Soaring through time and space to win the hearts of kids, parents and magical creatures everywhere! Shanti Wintergate and Greg Attonito (The Bouncing Souls) are bringing their love of music and adventure to kids at the speed of sound!

After touring the U.S. to read (and sing) their children’s book I Went for a Walk to children of all ages, Shanti and Greg returned home inspired. Together, they created an entire album of top-drawer music for the whole family - euphonious, upbeat and well-crafted songs to delight the ears and more refreshing than an ice-cold lemonade on a hot summer day.

There’s the esteem-boosting anthem Rad (“I’m Rad because I like to draw everything that I can see, I’m RAD because I like ME!”); and the empowering messages in Anyone Can Sing and Imagination which encourage singing from the heart and tapping the limitless imagination that lives in all of our hearts.  The playful, educational rock-steady rhythm of The Number Song tells the story of how “One, won the race of numbers.” And Dance Like A Monster will inspire kids from six to 60 to… well… Dance like a monster! What ever the subject, tempo, rhythm or rhyme you’ll be singing while you Dance Like a Monster in no time!

All of this and much more. So grab a friend, tune your imagination to the key of awesome and buckle up before we take off – it’s time for Play Date!

Thanks to our friend, Amy, over at Parentsphere and Clint at CWPR for first bringing Mike Park's kid stuff up on our radar last year.

Parentsphere Says:

Mike Park, owner of Asian Man Records has a brand new, kid-friendly label and we’re pretty stoked about it.

I interviewed Mike via Skype just shy of a year ago and I believe that is when he made the “official” announcement about his brand new label, Fun Fun Records.

Fun Fun Records’ artist roster is going to appeal immediately to those who have grown up in the punk rock community.  Kepi Ghoulie (Groovie Ghoulies), Greg Attonito (The Bouncing Souls), and Dan Potthaust (MU330), are just some of the punk-artists-gone-kid-friendly that have releases on the new label.

Play Date is Greg Attonito and Shanti Wintergate’s musical collaboration. Back in 2007, I reviewed their book, I Went for a Walk.  It was then that I had high hopes they would one day write a kid’s album together; That day has finally come!

Here at ChiIL Mama, we shoot our own live video footage and band interviews and we review new releases, so there's always something rockin' our kindie land corner of the world.  We also give away loads of great CDs nationwide and Chicago area tickets.   Check back early and often for the scoop on the best new releases and tour news.

We are thrilled to see the kindie (kids' indie) music scene growing each year and we're happy to be back for the second year as press sponsors for Chicago's own Beat Kitchen's Concerts for Kids.   This prolific series features a kids' show EVERY Sunday at noon and some of the best Bloody Marys in town!   We also cover Kidzapalooza/Lollapalooza every year and have been there since the start.   It's a cool trend that many large music fests across the nation now feature a kids' area like Austin Kiddie Limits.

After crowd surfing GWAR...

ChiIL Mama has lots more rockin' kids' CDs to give away nationwide, original footage and band interviews.   So check back like we vote in Chi, IL...early and often.

Click here for the master list of links to all our Holidaze 12 Days of Giveaways open for entry through midnight 12/15.

Good luck!

Riot Fest 2012 Saturday Best of Shots #photo filled feature

Saturday favorites from ChiIL Mama/ ChiIL Live Shows--Riot Fest 2012

Were you there?   Riot Fest 2012 was the best yet, with a brilliant move outdoors to gorgeous Humboldt Park.

It was a sweet, all ages fest with a huge range of people from hard core punks to new born punk kin.

Whether you want to relive the weekend, live vicariously and see what you missed, or remember what you've forgotten, we're sorting through thousands of our original Riot Fest photos to bring you some seriously sweet recaps and band features.

Saturday was a particularly fun day to shoot--from GWAR's blood drenched fanatics,

to the night's fire spinners, accompanied live by Descendents and Rise Against.

For now, here are just a few of our favs from Saturday.    Check back with us early and often.   Lots more to come!!

Chicago Teachers' Strike--Day 7 #CNN #Photos #Riotfest

Even at Riot Fest all weekend, teachers were never far from our minds.   I saw this bag on a teacher who was shooting the fest with me in the photo pits.

Teachers were there as audience members. photographers, and even musicians in the bands!

Above, keyboardist for the aptly named band, Deals Gone Bad, sports a red Chicago Teachers' Union Tee.

The strike is still on, although there is lots of good buzz about an equitable resolution soon.   If you missed it before, I was quoted by CNN about the strike HERE on September 14th.

Today they're running my op-ed piece in favor of the teachers!   Check it out here.

My View: We’ve got your backs, Chicago teachers

By Bonnie Kenaz-Mara, Special to CNN.

My 9- and 11-year-old Chicago public school kids are getting schooled in politics, union organizing and grassroots protest in a very visual way this week. The streets of Chicago are running red as teachers wearing crimson shirts take to the streets for the first strike in a quarter of a century. They're joined by red-wearing parents, kids and supportive community members.

This isn't an “us vs. them” fight. Our teachers ARE our friends, neighbors and parents with their own kids in public schools right next to our own.  Where is Mr. Mayor?  Maybe he missed out on every one of those 50 prior meetings that Chicago Public Schools and Chicago Teachers Union had because he was so busy chauffeuring his kids to a well-funded, private Lab School.

Photos Riot Fest 2012 ChiIL Mama's Sunday Best #photofeature

Riot Fest 2012 Sunday Best

We have literally thousands of sweet shots from Riot Fest Friday through Sunday that we're editing through and will bring you soon with full recaps.   For now, here's a little taste of some of our favs from each day--working backwards.   Recognize some famous faces?   We'll be breaking it down by the band later this week.    We shot all the bands in bold.   See if you can match the faces and feet to the following:

The fest was a huge, raging success in the new Humboldt Park digs.   We love it's incarnation as a family friendly, carnival feast for the eyes and ears and hope it becomes an annual tradition.   The park was spacious, shady and ideal for the Riot Fest day shift.   Then the night shows and after parties at all the usual venues kept the fun going well into the morning hours.

We shot loads of pit photos but we also made a point to catch the colorful crowd and especially the punk kin and yute.   If we can walk together why can't we rock together, indeed.   This year with both The Descendants and The Offspring playing....how could we not shoot the actual descendants-offspring- progeny-spawn of the punk parents out there.   We know parents and kids rock and the littles are sometimes the purest punks--anarchy incarnate, live in the moment, endless energy....You get the picture.

We also made a point of shooting the fire spinners, burlesque performers, and circus punks like Environmental Encroachment, and UPPERkase stilt crew.    We even had another fest sighting of Shreddy Shirt Boy (AKA:  Mat with one T) and his twin brother, too!   They were rocking out on drums with an ape, on one of the fenced in mini stages skattered throughout the grounds.   We'll have video footage up soon.

It was like a big family reunion, 30,000 punks strong.   We ran into soooo many good friends.    These are truly our people.   It was great to relax and hear stellar music with some of our favorite friends.

Speaking of familiar faces....we saw Coco Loco for I think the 4th or 5th fest this season, and still couldn't resist their rockin' earrings.   We left with 2 more pairs!!   I've worn two of their pairs of spirals daily for years.   They're very comfortable, fun, and distinctive.   I still get a ton of comments and compliments on them.   Now Sagezilla has a few pairs of her own.   She has black wings, black S shaped earrings made of water buffalo horn, and black spirals inlaid with white triangles.

Check back in with ChiIL Mama like we vote in Chi, IL...early and often for more Riot Fest recaps in the coming weeks, including video and many more photos.   Follow ChiIL Live Shows by e-mail in the right side bar for free downloads, original band video interviews, LIVE show footage, pit photos, tour news, give aways, reviews, and the heads up on great music and theatre coming to town.   Follow ChiIL Mama by e-mail in the right side bar for all ages fun, alt punk parenting tips, loads of kindie music/book/toy reviews and more.

We'll see you out there.

Riot Fest-Day 3 BE THERE--ChiIL Mama's Sunday Recommendations #Riotfest

Gogol Bordello HIGHLY recommended--Playing today (Sunday) at 7:25 on the Roots Stage.   ChiIL Mama/ChiIL Live Shows has shot them from the pit at North Coast Music Fest 2011 and Summer Camp Music Fest 2012.   They are one of our favorites and a must see live.   Come check out these gypsy punks.   You'll be glad you did!    They're the real deal.

We had a rockin' good time at Riot Fest in Humboldt Park yesterday.   It was the 8th year for the fest but the first day as a party in the park.   It was a genius move to take the bulk of the fest outdoors and we hope it's a permanent move.   We shot over 600 photos and video footage Saturday alone, which we'll be editing and posting here soon.   For now, we've got a fest to cover, so you'll just have to wait.

We've got loads of great Gwar blood shots....of the band and the slimed freaks in the audience, too.   And we have some sweet pit photos of A Wilhelm Scream and Chi-Town's own Deals Gone Bad.

Plenty of families were out with the punk kin.   UPPERkase Stilt Crew, the Environmental Encroachment marching band and fire spinners were fun for all ages and lent a welcome circus punk atmosphere to the fest.    The carnival strip was a colorful diversion, too.

Recommendations

There are so many truly great bands playing Sunday, so tough choices will have to be made.    Here's where we're leaning for sure.   We'll have to see how mid day plays out.   We may get around and do a mini sampler

Reverend Horton Heat--
first half set playing 1-1:40

Fishbone--1:15-2pm

The Jesus and Mary Chain 4:40-5:25

Elvis Costello 5:25-6:25

Alkaline Trio 6:25-7:25

Gogol Bordello 7:25-8:25

Iggy and The Stooges 8:25-9:25
Can't wait to see Iggy again.   Caught him last at Lollapalooza with the kids a few years back and he's still got it.   Our husky rescue dog is even named Iggy Pup.   Check out our past Iggy coverage here.

**Also noteworthy:

Bands we dig are in bold.   Click on their names to hear tracks, see videos and learn more.
