ADULT NIGHT OUT: "…Because I Love You: A Comedy About Parenting" Runs Saturdays Through April 22nd at Gorilla Tango

ChiIL Mama's Chi, IL Picks List:

Chicago’s premiere parent-centric show:
“…Because I Love You: A Comedy About Parenting”
Accessible Theatre for Hard Working Parents

Take a night off from diaper changing and baby burping; ask the sitter to read “Everyone Poops” for the seventeenth time or play the Fart Game with your kids before putting them in the bath; Gorilla Tango Originals has a show just for you! “...Because I Love You: A Comedy About Parenting,” by Jenny Seidelman and directed by Jessica Rae Olsen, performs Saturdays at 6pm, March 4-April 22, 2017, at Gorilla Tango Theatre (1919 N. Milwaukee Avenue, Chicago IL 60647). Tickets are $20; visitwww.gorillatango.com or call 773-598-4549 for tickets and more information.

“…Because I Love You: A Comedy About Parenting” celebrates the many different methods of child-rearing. The show centers on five different families working for the greater good of their children; including putting their all into the sometimes insufferable PTA meetings and fundraisers to create the best damn show for their kids! So grab your organic kombucha or your full-bodied Cab (no judgement here), sit back, and embrace the comedy of this crazy rollercoaster of life. To top it all off, the show is only an hour, so you have time to watch a show, grab drinks, dinner, and get home before you have to go straight to bed because you're too exhausted …that’s right, Gorilla Tango has your back!

To make this show even more accessible for parents, Gorilla Tango is excited to announce a partnership with Chicago Super Sitters (www.chicagosupersitters.com) who will provide discounted babysitting options with purchase of two tickets to “...Because I Love You: A Comedy About Parenting”! Please visit www.gorillatango.com/becauseiloveyou for more information.

Created FOR parents BY parents (and anyone who works with kids or has young children in their family), “...Because I Love You: A Comedy About Parenting” embraces the idea that there is no one way to raise a child. Author Jenny Seidelman writes: “In the short time that I’ve been a parent (2 years) I had yet to write about parenting specifically. I thought it would be an interesting idea to explore. Something I’ve come to realize is that parenting is such a personal experience, with lots of different ways to do it. There’s no right or wrong way, even if some people will tell you otherwise. Some of the moments that keep me going as a parent are when I share my frustrations or my joys with my husband, or parent-friend, or even a mom or dad in line at the grocery or at my kid’s music class. We’re all in this together, for the greater good of our children.” (Portions of Ms. Seidelman’s quote appear in a previous interview with Auditioningmom.com.)

Gorilla Tango Original Executive Producer, Ellen Domonkos White – a parent herself to a one year old super kid – deliberately set about creating an outlet for creative parents. “As a parent, time is so precious and as much as we all would love to work on a show or go to that three-hour play, the idea of spending that much time away from your kid, plus the babysitter cost, is daunting.  So often, we sacrifice our love of theatre, whether that be attending or performing, because priorities shift.  This show allows parents (audience and creatives) to juggle parenting and their love of theatre.”

Ellen adds, “I hired (Director) Jessica Rae Olsen who set about making rehearsals parent-friendly, including but, not exclusively, allowing parents to bring their child if that is what is needed. We deliberately put the show in an earlier time slot, and kept it at only an hour long, so parents have time to leisurely enjoy the show, catch drinks or dinner afterwards, and still get home in time to relieve the babysitter at a reasonable hour and unwind for a bit before passing out.”

Says Director Jessica Rae Olsen, “The particular superstars of the show are the moms: juggling parenthood, work, and theatre. There are four working moms involved in this show, not including (Executive Producer) Ellen. We have the amazing, well-established Chicago playwright Jenny Seidelman who works at the Lyric Opera as their Associate Director of Corporate Partnerships. We also have performers Gabrielle Lott-Rogers, professional performer; Mercedes Rohlfs, Feldenkrais Practitioner, former Development Director at Theater Wit, and currently Ravinia Festival’s Associate Director of Development, Major Gifts; and  Jennifer A. Ryder, bartender/supervisor at Rock Bottom Restaurant & Brewery.” She continues, “This show is for all the parents – and the parent supporters because it takes a village – out there. We are not all cookie cutter people. We all have different beliefs and viewpoints. We all come from different backgrounds. We all love, no matter the race or gender and this show is not afraid to point that out. This world still is a beautiful place with beautiful people in it and this piece showcases what love really looks like without stereotype or judgement.”

Gorilla Tango Theatre (GTT) exists to provide entertainment people actually want to see. GTT believes that every theatre person is a business person; it seeks to educate, foster, and provide resources to theatre practitioners so that each theatre production is treated as an entrepreneurial venture. GTT is conveniently located at the intersection of Western and Milwaukee in Chicago’s Bucktown neighborhood and is easily accessible by public transportation (just steps away from the Western Blue Line stop and the #49 Western, #73 Armitage and #56 Milwaukee buses). Street parking is also readily available. GTT offers a variety of affordable beer and wine for purchase. Consult the website for show rating information, tickets, and details.

It's Not Brain Surgery... It's A Highly Recommended Summer Acting Camp #summercamps #Ad

Don't despair if you're not one of those uber organized parents who had summer all mapped out back in January.   There are still some major gems in the Chi-town summer camp crown that have space available.   We are thrilled to partner up with Brain Arts Camp for this sponsored post.  Got a budding 6-18 year old thespian (or actor for you less erudite types)?   Check out Brain Arts Camp at Gorilla Tango.

We've done super fun workshops with them via 826CHI and highly recommend their creative, child led approach to mounting an entire show from scratch each camp week.  Only one session is full as of this posting, but you might want to hutch-a-moley once we leak the word.   We'll be sending our own son to Brain Arts Camp and highly recommend it!   Thanks to Brain Surgeon Theater for cutting us a discount on tuition for publicity.   Barter system rocks.

A good friend of ours went to Brain Arts Camp two years ago and LOVED it.   We got to see her impressively awesome final show.    Last summer she tried more of a mainstream theatre camp with a mega award winning company and she found that Brain Arts was better!   This year she's back with the little guys.

Here's the scoop:

Brain Surgeon Theater's unique Experiential Theater Arts camp invites kids and teens ages 6-18 to bring their energy, imagination, and ideas to help us create an unusual and spectacular play for a very special performance on the last day of camp

New this year -- movie making camp & an acting intensive! Kids will spend mornings working alongside professional Chicago theater artists as they write, rehearse, and perform an original play from scratch; afternoons will focus on fun skill-building workshops including scenic and costume design, voice, movement, and dance.  No experience is necessary to participate.  Space is limited to 15 campers - contact us today to reserve your spot for the next session!

Wizard World Favs--DC Super Pets,Traegonia, Pinups for Pitbulls, House of Darkley, Legos, Threadless, Gorilla Tango, & Kangoo

We've reviewed and given away DC Super Pets books at ChiIL Mama, and it was truly a treat to meet the author!  Check out our past coverage here and our contest winner here.

Speaking of authors and illustrators whose work we dig......do NOT miss Traegonia!    We're working up a give away for our readers and a review of both books, to run in late fall--pre-Christmas, so check back early and often.    We devoured The Sunbow Prophecy and the Ember Rune and were so excited to hear another sequel is in progress!    These mid-grade chapter books are whimsical, creative, eco-friendly and very well written.    And the sculpture creatures the books are based on are truly unique works of art.
This booth also has sweet book marks--silver sticks with magical little vials of colored stones or fairy dust.    We scooped up half a dozen for gifts for ourselves and our friends who love reading.

This is one of our all time favorite booths.    We've  publicized some of Pinups for Pitbulls Chi-Town fundraisers before.  They get bonus points for being dog friendly, punk rock, and uber creative.  Check out their punk band parody tees.    I bought the 7 Seconds one--Walk Together Rock Together and we had a good chat.    Turns out the artist and mastermind behind the catchy twists on lyrics is a good friend of Kevin Seconds. Can you find the pit friendly versions of Minor Threat, Sex Pistols, Descendants, and more?

There are a plethora of plushies at Comic Con.    But we're suckers for creative, well made, and of course funny signage is a big plus, too.   These were one of our favs.   Show House of Darkley some love and some cash.    These are very cool, hand made, funky and fun.    Please DON'T just stand around and take a ton of pix and then leave without buying anything (this is a reoccuring problem for them at shows!!).   Support the arts.    If you take pixs it's polite to either buy something or put up a feature so other people can.

There were also LOADS of Legos ranging from full sets, hard to find, vintage collector, and more.   Our fav was what I dubbed "the Lego graveyard".   What they lack in presentation and display, they make up for in price.    Kids flocked to the mix n match....everything's $3 table.    And they played there longer than just about anywhere.

Threadless makes the most creative, limited run, artist designed tee's out there.   They also share their time and talents by running kids workshops with great non-profits like Girls Rock! Chicago and 826Chi creative writing workshops.   We adore Threadless!!

Though you have to be 18+ to see their Burlesque shows, all ages are welcome to pose with the Gorilla Gals.    Click here to check out our past coverage on Gorilla Tango, including a run down of all the fun parodies they have running this weekend.

We're intrigued and would love to try out a pair of Kangoos. Enjoy all Wizard World Chicago Comic Con has to offer.    If you think you've hit everything wall to wall....check again.    Some of our favs are in yet another section to the front of the main hall.   See you out there.
