SAVE THE DATES: Adventure Stage Chicago “Hungers” for deeper connections with its 15th season

15th season of programming for young audiences to explore the challenges of “hunger,” both literal and metaphorical

Here at ChiIL Mama and ChiIL Live Shows, we've been enthusiastic fans of Adventure Stage Chicago for years. We're particularly excited for their upcoming season, since they're partnering up with some of our favorite people and companies. Adrian Danzig is a force of nature on stage and off, and we're jazzed to see him in the director's seat for The Adventures of Robin Hood by Scottish playwright, Oliver Emanuel, this fall. We're also huge fans of Chicago's Rough House Theater, who will be bringing their puppet prowess to The Stranger and the Shadow. Their Ubu the King was so impressive I bought one of their tank tops. We're also excited for Chicago pros, Andrew Marikis and Daryl Brooks teaming up on Fast Food Chain. We've caught much of their prior work all over the city in past years and we're thrilled they're working with ASC.

Adventure Stage Chicago (ASC), the participatory arts program of Northwestern Settlement (the Settlement), announces its 15th season of programming for young audiences, exploring the challenges of “hunger,” both literal and metaphorical, as the company applies its mission of telling heroic stories to the Settlement objective of disrupting generational poverty. The season will also be dedicated to Belna Reyes, the longtime Director of the Food Pantry and Support Services, who passed away this past year, as well as the Settlement’s commitment to providing assistance via the food pantry. ASC’s “Hunger” season features Oliver Emanuel’s adaptation of The Adventures of Robin Hood, Fast Food by Andrew Marikis created in collaboration with community partners; and The Stranger and the Shadow, based on the Golem of Prague and co- presented with Rough House Theater as part of the Chicago International Puppet Theatre Festival.

All performances take place at Northwestern Settlement’s Vittum Theater, 1012 N. Noble St. Tickets are $17 for adults and $12 for youth aged 14 years and younger. Group tickets are $10 for ten or more guests. Student matinee tickets are $7 for CPS and $8 for non-CPS groups. Tickets may be purchased at adventurestage.org or by calling 773.342.4141.

ASC believes in the power of the arts to promote change. Producing Artistic Director Tom Arvetis recently spoke about ASC’s commitment to serving the community: “Exactly how does a theatre participate in the effort to disrupt poverty? ASC embraces this question to serve the critical mission of our larger social service organization. We used it to guide our programming choices during the 2017-2018 season dedicated to literacy, and we return to it again as we announce our 2018-2019 season dedicated to hunger. The challenges of poverty are often layered and always complex. By isolating the markers of poverty (such as access to a quality education or access to nutritious food) and exploring them through a thematic lens, we become the civic space where these issues can be explored respectfully and with hope across generations.”

As a participatory arts company, ASC feature multiple options for audience engagement. Each production is presented with Spanish subtitles. Additionally, we frame each performance with a Curtain Conversation, asking audiences to keep a question in mind as they watch the play and return to it after the show; our lobby transforms into an interactive installation; and Learning Guides with show context and arts-integrated activities are available for teachers and parents.

The Adventures of Robin Hood
October 20 – November 24, 2018 By Oliver Emanuel
Directed by Adrian Danzig
A corrupt sheriff plagues the commoners of Nottingham. His skyrocketing taxes are preventing the needy from being able to feed themselves! Who will stand up to the injustices and bring hope back to the people? Follow Robin Hood and his Merry Men as they take you on a journey of action, danger, and of course, archery. This medieval legend with a modern twist places a cast of two at the center of the story, reimagining the tale with enthusiasm, tenacity, and vigor.

The Stranger and the Shadow
January 26 – February 16, 2019 Co-presented with Rough House Theater
An outsider enters a community that is guarded by a shadowy breathing barrier which feeds on the fear of its citizens. Rejected for her differences, she teams up with local misfits to bring to life a new creature powerful enough to fight the monstrous entity. The play uses human actors and life-size puppets to physicalize social forces, drawing inspiration from youth activists who seek to alter cultures of intolerance through empathy and inclusivity.

About Rough House Theater
Rough House connects individuals and communities through art that celebrates the weird things that make us unique, and the weirder things that bring us together. They create theater that captures the heart through the eye. Their shows use puppetry, music, and human performance to tell stories that are intimate, strange, and sincere.

Rough House has headlined the National Puppetry Festival, the international Physical Festival Chicago, and Open Eye Figure Theater’s Toy Theater After Dark Festival. The company has been a proud contributor to such Chicago institutions as Brain Frame and the Chicago International Puppet Theater Festival, of which it is a curatorial producing partner. Rough House has toured across the United States, performing in all variety of locations.

Fast Food Chain
April 27 – May 18, 2019 By Andrew Marikis Directed by Daryl Brooks
Fast Food Chain follows a brother and sister as they wrestle with the pressure of poverty and food insecurity in Chicago. They struggle to make it on their own until one day they discover a garden in the unlikeliest of places. It’s an adventure into the magical realism of African folktale, showcasing the power of community and storytelling in combating social issues.

About the Creative Team
Andrew Marikis is a writer, storyteller, and actor. He's worked with Seanachai, Lifeline, Boho, Sideshow, Adventure Stage, and many other theatres. He loves hearing a story that's totally true, and way too crazy to be true; and he harbors a not-so-secret obsession with dinosaurs. For more about him, check out www.andrewmarikis.com.

Daryl Brooks is happy to be back at Adventure Stage after directing 2017’s Akeelah and the Bee. He recently directed the award-winning hit The Black Pearl: The Story of Josephine Baker at The Black Ensemble Theater. His other credits include Men of Soul, I Am Who I Am: The Story of Teddy Pendergrass, and The Marvin Gaye Story.

Chi, IL LIVE Shows On Our Radar:

Adventure Stage Chicago presents
The World Premiere of Roots in the Alley
Adapted by ASC Playwright-in-Residence Carlos Murillo
Based on a Play by Lucas Baisch

April 6 - May 5, 2018

Play created with new community development process
led by ASC Playwright-in-Residence Carlos Murillo

I'll be ChiILin' with Chi, IL's Adventure Stage Chicago (ASC) for the press opening of Lucas Baisch’s Roots in the Alley on April 7th, so check back soon for my full review. ASC has long been a favorite of ours and we adore their neighborhood outreach and multicultural flavor.

ENTER HERE FOR YOUR CHANCE TO WIN
4 Tickets (Up to $68 Value) to the World Premiere of Lucas Baisch’s Roots in the Alley at Adventure Stage Chicago through 5/5! Enter through midnight 4/4/18. Winner's choice of show dates/times except the press opening, pending availability.

Adventure Stage Chicago (ASC), a program of the Northwestern Settlement, presents the world premiere of Lucas Baisch’s Roots in the Alley from April 6th to May 5th, 2018 (press opening April 7th) at the Vittum Theater, 1012 N. Noble Street. Inspired by his Guatemalan roots, Baisch’s new play reinvents Mayan creation myths through the story of two heroic Chicago sisters who navigate through an online game, learning about their heritage and family along the way. Tickets range from $7 to $17 and are available now at adventurestage.org or by calling 773-342-4141.

Roots in the Alley is ASC’s first play to benefit from a new play development process formalized by ASC Playwright-in-Residence Carlos Murillo. ASC and Baisch worked side-by-side with school, youth and community groups at Northwestern Settlement over 12 months, using their input and participation to integrate community stories into the world of the play. The resulting story about heroic youth amplifies the mission of the Settlement, educating and inspiring its community to help disrupt generational poverty in Chicago.

“What first drew me to Lucas’ work was his interest in creating unique universes. World-building is incredibly important to the creation of work for younger audiences, and I’m excited to work with a playwright who naturally starts from this place. This is also the first play we are producing with Carlos in residence, someone who both gives the organization an important perspective on how to successfully engage playwrights as well as giving future playwrights a way into our process,” says ASC Producing Artistic Director Tom Arvetis.

Roots in the Alley tells the story of Honey and Blanca, twin fish out of water in Chicago until they stumble into the Ceiba Network, an online game with real world consequences. The hero sisters struggle to level up in a mysterious digital underworld where they discover something strange to them—a heritage worth fighting for. As they progress through the game, they realize it has strange parallels with their own lives. In Roots in the Alley, Lucas Baisch reinvents the Mayan creation myths of The Popol Vuh, provoking questions about history and heritage. ASC Playwright-in-Residence Carlos Murillo and Producing Artistic Director Tom Arvetis were creative advisors for this project.

REVIEW: Reprise Recreates Recollections With Enjoyable Everyman Immigrant Tale

Chi, IL LIVE Shows On Our Radar:

Reprise Returns From Scotland With New November Dates At Adventure Stage Theatre

Northwestern Settlement’s Adventure Stage Chicago Adds More Dates to Reprise; Postpones new work Jack’s House to a later season.

ChiIL Mama had the pleasure of catching Reprise in their short 3 day run before they took the Chicago-centric commissioned piece abroad for Theatre of Scotland’s Home Away Festival in Glasgow. They're slated to perform in Scotland on October 8th then they'll be back home with a fall run for the public and school groups. We immensely enjoyed this history wrapped in mystery. Reprise recreates recollections with an enjoyable everyman immigrant tale. Recommended.

We've long been fans of Adventure Stage's excellent works. Their book based original adaptations via Artistic Director, Tom Arvetis, have pleased kids and parents alike for years. Recent productions have focused on an original post apocalyptic series. Now they're taking things one step further and writing their own past history in the form of Reprise, a fictional "everyman" immigrant tale based on the spark of an actual event.

Amid the current political hotbed of immigrant bashing and backlash, it's so refreshing to see a poignant tale of struggle and success. Reprise begins as the story of a violin loaned to a boy and evolves into so much more. This production follows a European immigrant and his instrument from boyhood to old age, and takes the audience along on the journey, through triumphs and tribulations. We experience family, community, layoffs, financial hardships, bullying, marriage, love and loss. And throughout it all, the love and joy of music is interwoven. This production reminds us that music can unite, and compassion is key. It's incredibly tough to begin again in a new land where the language and everything is strange. Truly we are all connected, and one never knows the ripples a kind act will send out into the universe or down through the decades.

Adventure Stage Chicago (ASC), a program of Northwestern Settlement (the Settlement), announces additional dates for its fall production of Reprise, due to popular demand. A new play with original music forming part of the National Theatre of Scotland’s Home Away Festival (performing in Glasgow on October 8), Reprise will return to Chicago for public performances November 4-5. School matinees are scheduled for November 1-10. ASC also announces the postponement of Jack’s House.

All performances take place at Northwestern Settlement’s Vittum Theater, 1012 N. Noble St. Tickets are $10 for preview performances, and $17 for adults and $12 for youth aged 14 years and younger for the regular run. Tickets may be purchased at adventurestage.org or by calling 773.342.4141

Reprise
November 4 - 5, 2016
Friday 7pm; Saturday 4pm

An old man returns a violin to Northwestern Settlement. Ms. Harriet Vittum lent it to him 80 years earlier, with the promise that he bring it back when he was done. With original music and lyrics inspired by Chicago’s cultural traditions, Reprise follows an immigrant story as we discover what he did with the instrument all those years, how he knew he was finished, and what it meant to keep his promise. The only North American company commissioned to participate in the National Theatre of Scotland’s Home Away Festival, ASC will tell the story of this decades-long community connection during a limited return engagement.

Reprise has been featured in American Theatre Magazine, the Chicago Sun-Times, and Time Out Chicago Kids, and Ada Grey “really liked how the show had a powerful sense of community.”

This production is supported in part by: the National Theatre of Scotland; the British Association for American Studies, US Embassy, London; and the Old Town School of Folk Music.

Reprise is directed by Sarah Rose Graber, produced by Casey Pilkenton, with compositions and musical direction by John Szymanski, and features Felipe Carrasco, Sindy I. Castro, Mara Dale, Jacob Kelly, La Shone Kelly, Jose Nateras, Kalman Strauss, and Justine C. Turner, with Brandon Wardell (lighting and scenic design); Jessica Kuehnau Wardell (costume and scenic design); and Jen Poulin (stage management).

About the Home Away Festival:
Spanning five continents, Home Away: An International Festival of Participatory Arts sees the National Theatre of Scotland partner with theatre artists and community arts organizations from Rio de Janeiro (Brazil), Brisbane (Australia), Chicago (USA), New Delhi (India), and Kingston (Jamaica).

These five organizations will come together with five companies from Scotland, including Artlink (Edinburgh), (Uist) a new Highlands Gaelic arts collective, and the Bangladeshi Association of Glasgow. As part of the program, ten original theatre pieces, commissioned by the National Theatre of Scotland, will be created by professional artists working with community participants. Each production will premiere within the community where it has been created and will be subsequently showcased at the Home Away festival in Glasgow.

Jack’s House:
ASC announces the postponement of Jack’s House, an original work conceptualized as a celebration of Northwestern Settlement’s 125-year history and the many vibrant individuals who make up our community. New works need time and space to develop, and we will continue to craft a play that best represents ASC’s values and the Settlement’s mission and commitment to service. ASC now directs its efforts to the return of Reprise, to our 2 presentations during the Chicago International Puppet Theater Festival (Puzzle Theater’s Plastique, Jan 20-23; and Open Eye Figure Theatre’s The Sorcerer’s Apprentice, Jan 24-27); and to our remount of Six Stories Tall, which will bookend our first- ever national tour.
