“Think Reading Rainbow meets the circus meets Chicago’s beautiful parks network,” said Jared Bellot, Goodman’s Clifford Director of Education and Engagement. “BOOK UP! is joyful, imaginative and built to meet children exactly where they are—physically, developmentally, and creatively. We believe that live performance has the power to spark curiosity, build connections and foster a lifelong love of storytelling. And by bringing this work directly into neighborhoods across the city, we’re saying every child deserves access to the arts, and every park can be a stage. This is about nurturing early literacy, yes—but it’s also about creating shared moments of wonder and joy for families and communities.”

Jean Claudio

A traveling librarian (Jean Claudio) rolls into town with a magical book cart, ready to spark big imaginations everywhere and beyond! With a little wiggle, a little giggle and a whole lot of wonder, stories leap off the pages through juggling, tumbling, clowning and aerial acrobatics—with Kylie Anderson, Madie Doppelt and Robbie Matthew, all ProTraining alumni of Chicago’s famed Actors Gymnasium.

BOOK UP! is presented as part of Goodman’s 100 Free Acts of Theater program and the Chicago Park District’s Night Out in the Parks series, both supported by the Mayor’s Office and the Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events (DCASE). The Night Out in the Parks program presents cultural events year-round in neighborhood parks throughout the city. The Chicago Park District in partnership with 100 local artists and organizations, presents engaging events and performances that enhance quality of life across Chicago and amplify the artistic and cultural vibrancy in every neighborhood. Through multiple disciplines, which include theater, music, movies, dance, site-specific work, nature programs, and community festivals, the series aims to support Chicago-based artists, facilitate community-based partnerships and programs, cultivate civic engagement, and ensure equity in access to the arts for all Chicagoans. www.nightoutintheparks.com.

ABOUT GOODMAN THEATRE

Chicago’s theater since 1925, Goodman Theatre is a not-for-profit arts and community organization in the heart of the Loop, distinguished by the excellence and scope of its artistic programming and community engagement. Led by Artistic Director Susan V. Booth and Executive Director John Collins, the theater’s artistic priorities include new play development (more than 150 world or American premieres), large scale musical theater works and reimagined classics. Artists and productions have earned two Pulitzer Prizes, 22 Tony Awards and more than 160 Jeff Awards, among other accolades.

The Goodman is the first theater in the world to produce all 10 plays in August Wilson’s “American Century Cycle.” Its longtime annual holiday tradition A Christmas Carol, now in its fifth decade, has created a new generation of theatergoers in Chicago. The Goodman also frequently serves as a production and program partner with national and international companies and Chicago’s Off-Loop theaters.

Using the tools of theatrical practice, the Goodman’s Education and Engagement programs aim to develop generations of citizens who understand and empathize with cultures and stories of diverse voices. The Goodman’s Alice Rapoport Center for Education and Engagement is the home of these programs, which are offered for Chicago youth—85% of whom come from underserved communities—schools and life-long learners.

Goodman Theatre was built on the unceded homelands of the Council of the Three Fires: the Ojibwe, Odawa and Potawatomi Nations. We recognize that many other Nations consider the area we now call Chicago as their traditional homeland—including the Myaamia, Ho-Chunk, Menominee, Sac and Fox, Peoria, Kaskaskia, Wea, Kickapoo and Mascouten and remains home to many Native peoples today. The Goodman is proud to have a relationship with Gichigamiin Indigenous Nations Museum. Located in Evanston, the Museum honors the survival and perseverance of Indigenous communities and promotes a greater understanding of Indigenous peoples: gichigamiin-museum.org.

Goodman Theatre was founded by William O. Goodman and his family in honor of their son Kenneth, an important figure in Chicago’s cultural renaissance in the early 1900s. The Goodman family’s legacy lives on through the continued work and dedication of Kenneth’s family, including Albert Ivar Goodman, who with his late mother, Edith-Marie Appleton, contributed the necessary funds for the creation on the new Goodman center in 2000.

Marsha Cruzan is Chair of Goodman Theatre’s Board of Trustees, Diane Landgren is Women’s Board President and Kelli Garcia is President of the Scenemakers Board for young professionals.

Link and Niemi are KidSeries regulars and have appeared in numerous Lifeline hits together, including the popular Click, Clack, Moo series. Now the pair take the reins on Link’s debut adaptation. "The vivid illustrations from the book have inspired a beautiful scenic design, inventive costuming, and dynamic puppets," says Niemi. "I can't wait for the kids to see our giant polar bear!"

ChiIL Live Shows On Our Radar

GOODMAN’S 47TH ANNUAL

A CHRISTMAS CAROL

STARRING CHRISTOPHER DONAHUE AS SCROOGE

NOW ON STAGE IN PREVIEW PERFORMANCES, OPENS NOVEMBER 24

***OPENING NIGHT PRE-SHOW EVENTS INCLUDES A TREE LIGHTING WITH TINY TIM (AVA ROSE DOTY) AND DIRECTOR JESSICA THEBUS, PLUS LIVE MUSIC BY BENET ACADEMY MADRIGALS AND WILLIAM BUCHHOLTZ (ALGONQUIN/METIS)***

ChiIL Mama's Chi, IL Picks List

Goodman Theatre’s incomparable production of A Christmas Carol has been a beloved family tradition of ours for decades. This year my son, Dugan, is working the production on deck crew, so I’m even more excited than usual! It truly takes a village, on stage, behind the scenes, and in development, to make magic of this magnitude happen. I’ll be checking out the show on opening night, November 24th, so check back shortly after for my full review. We're excited to see Christopher Donahue in his first year as Ebenezer Scrooge, and every year Goodman changes up the production in creative ways, while keeping the tradition of their stunning set design. Goodman Theatre’s 47th annual A Christmas Carol, directed by Jessica Thebus, is sure to delight audience members of all ages. It's long been one of our top picks for making multigenerational memories. Experiential gifts, like theatre tickets, are an appreciated clutter buster.

Goodman Theatre’s 47th annual A Christmas Carol, directed by Jessica Thebus, starring Christopher Donahue in his first year as Ebenezer Scrooge, along with other local favorites new to the production—Kate Fry (Narrator), Anthony Irons (Bob Cratchit), Bri Sudia (Ghost of Christmas Present) and more, are now available now. As Alternate Scrooge, Austin Tichenor steps into the miserly businessman’s shoes for 10 performances. A new Tiny Tim this year—Ava Rose Doty (last seen as Young Tommy in The Who’s TOMMY) is joined by young performers Isabel Ackerman, Viva Boresi, Annabel Finch, Xavier Irons and Henry Lombardo. The production opens this Sunday, November 24, and runs through December 30.

Tickets ($25 - $159; subject to change) are available at GoodmanTheatre.org/Carol or by phone at 312.443.3800. Visit the website for performance dates when Tichenor will appear as Scrooge. Goodman Theatre is grateful for the support of PNC (Major Corporate Sponsor) and Abbott Fund (Corporate Sponsor Partner).

Once again this year, Goodman Theatre welcomes special guests to enhance its opening night with pre-show festivities including madrigal singers from Benet Academy (Naperville) and artist William Buchholtz (Algonquin/Metis) on flute. Director Jessica Thebus and the young performers of the production will light the Goodman’s Christmas tree. Pre-show events begin at 6pm on Sunday, November 24th.

The "perfect Chicago holiday tradition” (Chicago Parent), Dickens’ classic is a “beautiful, timeless message of generosity’s triumph over greed” (Chicago Tribune). Businessman Ebenezer Scrooge’s sizable bank account is only matched by his disdain for the holidays. But one fateful Christmas Eve, Scrooge is visited by four ghosts who take him on a spectacular adventure through his past, present and future, helping him on his discovery of kindness, compassion and redemption in a tale with a “first-rate cast and marvelous staging (that) shines merry and bright" (Chicago Sun-Times). Now in its fifth decade, A Christmas Carol is “still the best Christmas story ever told” (Time Out Chicago) and a signature event of the Chicago holiday season with a star-studded history that includes stage and screen notables like Jessie Mueller, Joe Minoso, Del Close, Harry J. Lennix, Felicia P. Fields, Raul Esparza, Sally Murphy and Frank Galati.

This omission has added to the isolation, erasure and harm that Indigenous communities have faced for hundreds of years. We have begun a more deliberate journey towards celebrating Native American stories and welcoming Indigenous communities.

REVIEW:

By Bonnie Kenaz-Mara

Highly Recommended. ★★★★ Four out of four stars. Bonnie Kenaz-Mara, ChiILMama.com

Roald Dahl’s JAMES AND THE GIANT PEACH is imagination incarnate. The book, film, and stage adaptation have long been family favorites of ours. In the capable hands of director/choreographer, Tommy Rapley, this story comes alive on stage at Marriott in all it's glory. Adults will adore this colorful cast and stellar storytelling as much as the kids do. Kudos to all the humans and bugs on cast and crew for a truly delightful production. When we caught opening weekend, the young kids in the audience were laughing often and entirely engaged with the on stage magic and mayhem.

I had the special delight of sharing the experience with 3 recent graduates of Northwestern University's theatre program, including my son, who had director/choreographer, Tommy Rapley, as their acting professor for 4 years. They were all enthusiastic fans of the production, and I can't tell you how jazzed I am to still be able to bring twenty somethings to a Marriott Theatre for Young Audiences show! My kids grew up on Chicago regional children's theatre and I'm so excited that my oldest is now working in the industry and getting the next generation of kids introduced to the wonder and joy of live theatre. Studies show exposing kids to theatre increases empathy and creativity. And you never know what a show might spark and what future plans may unfold.

ChiIL Mama, Bonnie Kenaz-Mara (left) with 3 of director/choreographer, Tommy Rapley's students who recently graduated from Northwestern University, including my son, Dugan (right).

Marriot's JAMES AND THE GIANT PEACH is such a fun show. The costumes, puppets, props, music, and staging are playful and a joy to see. We particularly loved the unique choreography for Marriott's theatre in the round configuration which played out on multiple levels and directions so even the youngest audience members have great sight-lines.

We also dug the steamer trunks lining the perimeter of the stage, providing a treasure trove of props and costume changes.

The entire cast is hilarious and crazy talented. Special shout out to Kai Edgar as “James,” Andrés Enriquezas “Earthworm,” Lucy Godinez as “Aunt Sponge,” and Leah Morrow as “Aunt Spiker”.

The puppets are a must see. Don't miss this!

Bonnie is a Chicago based writer, theatre critic, photographer, artist, and Mama to 2 amazing adults. She owns two websites where she publishes frequently: ChiILLiveShows.com (adult) & ChiILMama.com (family friendly).

Marriott Theatre for Young Audiences invites theatergoers of all ages on a remarkable voyage with Roald Dahl’s JAMES AND THE GIANT PEACH. Roald Dahl’s beloved story is brought to fantastical musical life, running through March 30, at 10 Marriott Drive. The one-hour musical journey is directed and choreographed by Tommy Rapley with music direction by Ryan T. Nelson. Each performance will be followed by a question-and-answer session with the cast.

“I am thrilled to be bringing  James and the Giant Peach  to Marriott Lincolnshire families,” said director Tommy Rapley. “This whimsical musical adaptation of Roald Dahl’s classic contains the perfect blend of playful, spooky, heartwarming, mysterious, imaginative, and downright hilarious storytelling that I love as a director. The themes of forgiveness, the importance of family, and the boundless love between parent and child are particularly moving and vitally important to share with young audiences. At the heart of our story, James is the ideal character to welcome young people into adventure, as he leads young audiences on a journey that blends grief, hope, love, and joy."

When James is sent by his aunts to chop down their old fruit tree, he discovers a magic potion that launches an expedition of enormous proportions. Suddenly, James finds himself in the center of a gigantic peach, among human-sized insects with equally oversized personalities. After the peach rolls into the ocean, the group faces hunger, sharks and plenty of disagreements. Thanks to James' quick wit and creative thinking, they learn to live and work together as a family. Featuring a wickedly tuneful score by the Tony Award-nominated team of Pasek and Paul (La La Land, Dear Evan Hansen, The Greatest Showman) and a curiously quirky book by Timothy Allen McDonald (Roald Dahl's Willy Wonka, Jim Henson’s Emmet Otter’s Jug-Band Christmas). JAMES AND THE GIANT PEACH is the perfect voyage for young theatergoers.

This production of JAMES AND THE GIANT PEACH stars Kai Edgar as “James,” Andrés Enriquezas “Earthworm,” Lucy Godinez as “Aunt Sponge,” Alex Goodrich as “Ladahlord,” Christopher Kale Jones as “Green Grasshopper,” Garret Lutz as “Centipede,” Leah Morrow as “Aunt Spiker,” Juwon Tyrel Perry as “Spider”, and Elizabeth Telford as “Ladybug” with understudies Emily Ann Brooks, Crystal Claros, Milla Liss, Tommy Thurston and Annie Yokom.

The Marriott Theatre for Young Audiences team is led by Associate Artistic Director Katie Johannigman and Interim Artistic Associate Annie Yokom, with Costume Design by Amanda Vander Byl, Lighting Design by Ben Carne, Scenic Design by Milo Bue, Wig Design by Ray Sanchez, Props Design by Leo Bassow, and Sound Design by Michael Daly. The creative team also includes Assistant Director & Choreographer Emily Ann Brooks, Dialect Coach Sammi Grant, and Stage Manager Marcus Carroll.

Cloud Man has been specifically designed for audiences members between 4-7 years old, but Filament welcomes family members of all ages.

The Northwest Side theater for young audiences invites audiences to follow the clues to the top of Cloud Mountain March 17 through April 14. Expect magical puppets, inventive storytelling, and lots of clouds and surprises.

Filament Theatre, the Northwest Side’s premier theater for young audiences, is delighted to present the magical Constellation Points’ Cloud Man from March 16 to April 14.

Cloud Man features exquisite puppetry and invites audience members to follow the clues to the very top of Cloud Mountain, where the views are always surprising. The story is told by cloud expert Cloudia, who always had her head in the clouds. All of her life, she has dreamt of seeing a Cloud Man–an extremely rare creature who lives a quiet life up high in the sky.

A cleverly staged show featuring one performer, puppets, storytelling and lots of clouds, Cloud Man explores the ways we try to make sense of the world. It encourages audiences to notice the beauty and wonder to be found in everyday life. It’s a gentle lesson in the ways we can care for the world without controlling it.

“We are thrilled to partner with Constellation Points to bring Cloud Man to Filament. It’s been a delight to imagine all of the ways that we can enjoy the enchantment of nature and all its mystery while we think thoughtfully about what it means to care for the world around us. “ Producing Artistic Director, Reji Simon

Central to Filament’s mission is its effort to create new work not only for, but with, young audiences. Via school residencies and Filament workshops, young people will explore themes from the play to create pre- and post-show activities.

CLOUD MAN: Cloud Man will be performed on Saturdays at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m., and Sundays at 2 p.m. from March 17 through April 14. There is no performance on March 31. A sensory friendly performance will be held April 6 at 11 a.m. Field trips are available. Tickets: www.filamenttheatre.org

REVIEW: Charlie and the Chocolate Factory Now Playing Paramount Theatre Through January 14, 2024

ChiIL Mama’s ChiIL Picks List

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
receiving its Professional Regional Premiere
November 8, 2023-January 14, 2024

Don't miss this delicious modern morality tale with a fabulous gender swapping set of Charlies, a charmingly snarky Wonka, and creatively colorful costumes and sets.

Highly recommended--ChiIL Mama.

Paramount Theatre’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory features (front) Stephen Schellhardt as Willy Wonka, (middle row, kneeling, from left) Tiffany T. Taylor as Violet Beauregarde, Meena Sood as Charlie Bucket, Heidi Kettenring as Mrs. Teavee, (back row, standing, from left) Devon Hayakawa as Veruca Salt, David Blakeman as Augustus Gloop, August Forman as Mike Teavee, Jason Richards as Mr. Salt, Lorenzo Rush Jr. as Mr. Beauregarde, Abby C. Smith as Mrs. Gloop, and Gene Weygandt as Grandpa Joe.

REVIEW:
By Bonnie Kenaz-Mara

Here at ChiIL Mama we love the magic and creativity of live theatre. Where else do so many areas of the arts collide, to make epic story telling possible? We're also big fans of making fun, family memories together. Experiential gifts like tickets to a family friendly musical, make for great clutter busting gift ideas for the holidays. Theatre is also here for you, when the turkey's been devoured and you're left with a houseful of family and a need for something fun to do together.
Gluttony dooms Augustus Gloop (David Blakeman, center), as Mrs. Gloop (Abby C. Smith, left), looks on in horror, while Willy Wonka (Stephen Schellhardt)...not so much…in Paramount's Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

Paramount Theatre has the perfect recipe for multigenerational family fun with their tasty treat of a holiday extravaganza. We had the pleasure of seeing the Professional Regional Premiere of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory on opening night and we've been singing the catchy lyrics and raving about this show ever since.

Veruca Salt (Devon Hayakawa, right) and Mr. Salt (Jason Richards) are amazed by Oompa Loompas in Paramount's Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
The sets, costumes, lighting, and orchestra are all next level. The choreography and special effects pop, and the entire colorful conglomeration makes for a fabulously phantasmagorical production, with a timely message we can all get on board with.

The boat ride scene in Paramount Theatre’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, featuring Stephen Schellhardt as Willy Wonka at the helm with his telescope, and Heidi Kettenring (left) as Mrs. Teavee, with her flask.

We particularly love the diversity in casting, with a range of ethnicities, body types, and genders, a perfect update from the lily white original.
Jaye Ladymore (left) plays Mrs. Bucket and Meena Sood is Charlie Bucket in Paramount's Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

Paramount has also added excellent modern touches since Roald Dahl's original book, published in 1964. Violet is an obnoxious, black, social media influencer, played to perfection byTiffany T. Taylor, with Chicago favorite, Lorenzo Rush Jr. as Tiffany’s father, Mike. Of course she's still easily recognizable as the gum smacking brat we all love to loathe.

Mr. Beauregarde (Lorenzo Rush Jr., from left) live streams the moment his daughter, social media star and “The Queen of Pop,” Violet Beauregarde (Tiffany T. Taylor) meets Willy Wonka (Stephen Schellhardt), but Wonka isn’t having any of it in Paramount's Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

August Forman, crazy talented trans Chicago actor, is hilarious as Mike Teavee, the brilliant, screen addicted hacker kid with an attitude problem. This is the 3rd Paramount production we've caught August in, including a lead in Hand to God, and fun supporting roles in Little Shop of Horrors, where they were directed by their spouse, talented Chicago actor and director, Landree Fleming.

David Blakeman makes a great glutton, as Augustus Gloop. Devon Hayakawa shines as spoiled Russian princess, Veruca Salt. And Stephen Schellhardt is spectacular as snarky curmudgeon, Willy Wonka. Their respective parents are pretty perfect in their enabling roles, too. And like Shakespeare's characters, this collection of intrepid kids and their caregivers are as timeless and timely as ever.

We've been huge fans of Broadway star and Chicago gem, Gene Weygandt, for years, and we adore his Grandpa Joe in this production! We did a video interview and shot song clips with him way back in 2011, in rehearsals for A Christmas Story at Chicago Theatre, and since then we catch him on stage every chance we can. Gene's a true local treasure. https://www.chiilmama.com/2011/12/christmas-story-musical-interview-with.html.

Finally, we are completely enamored with lovable Charlie Bucket, played by alternating boy and girl leads, Meena Sood and Charlie Long. We caught Meena in action on opening night and were charmed by her Charlie Bucket. What a great role model and inspiration for kids to see that a beloved character can truly be embodied by a kid of any gender or ethnicity. Representation matters, and this is huge!  Kudos to the entire cast and crew for a truly memorable, world class production. Don't miss this!
