Children of Bodom at Congress Theater in November
Double click on the photos for full screen options
Finnish black metal band, Children of Bodom, is named for an unsolved teen triple murder on the shores of Lake Bodom in 1960. Four friends were camping and only one survived with injuries, later becoming a suspect who was ultimately acquitted. According to Wikipedia, the band has been together since 1993 and has been labeled, melodic death metal, among other genres. Despite the "hate crew" hype, black nail polish, and angry lyrics, these tattooed long haired rockers from Finland still manage to come across more hot than horrifying. Check out their web site for downloads, merch, and tour dates.
Present history via Wikipedia:
Relentless Reckless Forever (2010–present)
The Blooddrunk tour ended and Children of Bodom started recording their new album. During the recording of the drum tracks there was a small tornado and the power was cut out. Consequently the recording was delayed until after their tour with Black Label Society. Children Of Bodom released some information to Metal Hammer magazine about new album tracks. The three track names they released were entitled: "Pussyfoot Miss Suicide," "Ugly," and "Was It Worth It?" [26] [27] They have since returned and recorded all tracks, and they are expecting to release their album in early 2011.[28]
In November the band announced "The Ugly World Tour 2011" which will be from March-May 2011 and will feature dates around Europe. Opening Acts will be Ensiferum, Machinae Supremacy and Amon Amarth (UK only). On November 24, it was announced that the title of the album will be "Relentless Reckless Forever". The album will be released on March 8, 2011. A music video for "Was It Worth It?" is in production, a trailer for the video has been released.
Clutch at Congress Theater in November
double click for full screen options
Clutch is one of our favorite bands, and it was truly a pleasure to shoot their Congress appearance in November, when they opened for Black Label Society and Children of Bodom. Check out the shots here and archived on ChiIL Live Shows. Even better, go see them live. They'll be back at Congress Theater again in a few short weeks and we'll be covering their show again. This time they'll open for Motorhead. Valient Thorr is also on the bill.
February 19th-Motorhead/Clutch/Valient Thorr (all ages)-Congress Theatre-7:00pm
We've seen Clutch play for years and in such diverse venues as Metro, Logan Auditorium, Cubby Bear, and even outdoors at Summer Camp Music Festival. Last summer in Sweden we even thought we saw Neil Fallon's likeness in a stained glass window in Uppsala. Check it out HERE and see what you think. Maybe it's just his signature beard...but there's an uncanny resemblance.
Neil Fallon's growling vocals and insightful lyrics always make for a memorable live show. Word is, the band bought out their prior label and are re-releasing on their own. So let's show them some love. Check out their web site for ticket info, merch and downloads at http://www.pro-rock.com/.

Band Interviews Update
Human Tim + Robot Tim at Schubas
We've now interviewed 3 bands with both Mom and Dad in them, 3 bands full of just the kids 13-16 (oh yeah.......and a 25 year old babysitter). And a number of kids punk and indie (kindie) bands. It's been so much fun getting to know everyone better and hearing everyone's take on topics like music, life, the environment, how creatives parent, and how parents create.
Here's what you can look forward to:

We're All Punk Parents: Interview with members of
THE WEBSTIRS
WALLY DOGGER (Record Release!!)--You can check out their whole CD for FREE on their site--fun stuff!
THE NOSES
THIS MAGAZINE IS HAUNTED
COTTON PONY
We talked to a mix of parents who incestuously overlapped in many of the 5 bands above. Our interview includes a couple dads and 1 kick ass punk mama, Ellen, who sings, plays a wicked bass, and can still spout a plume of Pabst Blue Ribbon on stage, with the best of 'em. Hear them expound on how parenting littles has changed their writing tempo and their lives, what the kids think of The Sex Pistols, and Ellen's brilliantly snarky, kittencentric rant about parenting philosophy, full of chunks of wisdom like "we're all assholes and little Buddhas at the same time."
One of the dads we interviewed from The Noses is award winning playwright, Brett Neveu, who has two world premiers in Chicago right now. Odradek is playing at The House Theatre in Wicker Park and Do The Hustle is playing at Writers' Theatre in Glencoe. Check out our past coverage on these guys HERE and HERE.

These guys are talented and genuinely nice. I was relieved to make it through the interview without calling' em Kate and Tatie or inverting the locations on their band name and new release--respectively How Far To Austin and Goodnight Madison. We also had a fun, chat with their drummer, who is a proud father to 6 year old son and potential future drummer, Tyson. We'll be featuring ticket give aways to all their upcoming shows and have 4 copies of Goodnight Madison for upcoming Win A Disc Wednesdays.

Schubas Tonight--Purple Apple, The Blisters and When Flying Feels Like Falling
Don't underestimate these kids because of their age. These bands rock! Come check out some of the youngest musicians in the city actually getting gigs in real clubs, outside of organizations like Girls Rock Chicago and School of Rock.
We saw Purple Apple at Redmoon's JOE fest last year and were blown away. We also remember The Blisters from way back in the day when they played Kidzapalooza 2006. They were still young children themselves and they happily signed t-shirts for Du-Jay and Sagezilla, who were 3 & 5 at the time!
I've never seen WFFLF, but I first met Violet (guitars/vocals) when she was a toddler-no older than 3. Even then she was unique and stood out from the others. Can't wait to hear them all play!
ChiIL Mama gave away a pair of tickets earlier in the week and we'll be there to interview some of the band members and bring you a taste of their live tunes. We'll run a full feature on the bands in the near future. For now, come check 'em out LIVE at Schubas tonight. All ages. Show is 7pm-10pm. Here's what the Schubas site has to say:

AMPLIFY New Music Series presents...

Chicago-based indie pop quartet Purple Apple is made up of three 13-year-old girls and their 20 something babysitter on drums... yes, seriously. Though young by any stretch of the imagination, the three 8th grade schoolmates at the core of the band - Olivia, Madi and Nonie - are wise beyond their years and nowhere does this show more than in their songwriting. While most of us were playing tag and trying out for the junior high cheerleading team, these girls spend their free time writing songs which fantastically capture the complex and sophisitcated world around us through eyes not yet tarnished by the cynicism of adulthood.
These truly gifted young ladies might have gone unnoticed had frontwoman Olivia not asked longtime family friends (and music industry veterans) Michael Wilison and Blake Smith (Caviar, Prairie Cartel) if she could record one of her songs at their home studio. In only a couple of hours, Olivia cut the guitar and vocals for the first song she ever wrote with her Purple Apple sisters, "Life As It Is," and from that afternoon it was clear that there was something special going on. Over the summer of 2009, Purple Apple retreated to Olivia's family's lake house and in between water skiing and Wiffle Ball games, they recorded seven songs in a make-shift studio with Wilison & Smith producing.

Iggy Pop: In The Hands Of The Fans
We've been fans of Iggy Pop for most of our lives, and were so excited that our kids could hear him at Lollapalooza a couple years back. When we adopted a husky rescue mix in March, the kids even chose to name her Iggy Pup. I wanna be your dog, indeed!
On Friday, September 3rd 2010, Iggy and the Stooges are putting themselves IN THE HANDS OF THE FANS...
MVD Entertainment Group has launched the site www.InTheHandsOfTheFans.com to offer fans a once in a lifetime opportunity to film and interview Iggy and the Stooges performing the seminal punk rock masterpiece RAW POWER at the All Tomorrow's Parties Festival on September 3, 2010. Six lucky fans will be chosen by way of a video submission contest to join director Joey Carey on location at the Stardust Theater at Kutchers' Country Club in Monticello, NY. This marks the reunion between Iggy Pop and powerhouse guitarist James Williamson as well as original Stooges drummer Scott "Rock Action" Asheton. Also featuring Mike Watt on bass and Steve Mackay on saxophone.
The contest is based on fans submitting short high definition video segments asking Iggy and the Stooges interview questions, or demonstrating why they should win the contest. Winners of the contest will film and interview Iggy and the Stooges at All Tomorrow's Parties. This fan shot footage, along with the contestant video submissions, will be crafted into a high definition longform program, which will be part concert film and part reality TV show about the journey of the fans.
"Raw Power is one of the greatest, most dangerous albums in the history of rock and roll" says Ed Seaman, C.O.O. of MVD Entertainment Group. "We are honored to enable the fans this connection with the band; this will be a dream come true for the winners."
IN THE HANDS OF THE FANS will be sustainable as a series; MVD is already deep in discussions with a number of other artists and expects to have five more programs shot within the next six months with new announcements expected any day.
The final program for Iggy and the Stooges IN THE HANDS OF THE FANS is expected to release on DVD, BluRay, digital download and broadcast by early 2011. All contestants will receive a special offer to purchase the film early along with some exclusive value added content.
