Lifeline Theatre’s KidSeries presents the world premiere of Leaf, based on the beloved picture book by Sandra Dieckmann, March 15 to April 20 at Lifeline Theatre, 6912 N. Glenwood Ave. Adaptor and Lifeline ensemble member Amanda Link teams up with director Nathaniel Niemi to bring audiences a timely world premiere featuring a polar bear on their quest to return home and the young crow who finds it within herself to help them. Leaf centers on our interconnectedness with each other and our planet, and the importance of sharing one’s story. 

"Adults will pick up on important themes like the dangers of climate change or fearing those who are different," says Link. "For the kids, I hope to spark their sense of wonder and awaken empathy." Link and Niemi are KidSeries regulars and have appeared in numerous Lifeline hits together, including the popular Click, Clack, Moo series. Now the pair take the reins on Link’s debut adaptation. "The vivid illustrations from the book have inspired a beautiful scenic design, inventive costuming, and dynamic puppets," says Niemi. "I can't wait for the kids to see our giant polar bear!"

Brian wrote and starred in Teatro Vista’s highly acclaimed 2022 world premiere musical, Somewhere Over the Border.

When my children were young, we were season subscribers to all their fabulous KidSeries Shows and I've been reviewing just about all of their adult and family friendly productions since 2010. Lifeline Theatre is truly a local gem, and they've been struggling financially since the pandemic. Lifeline Theatre presents the Midwest premiere of Kid Prince and Pablo, a hip-hop musical based on Mark Twain’s story The Prince and the Pauper, January 3 – February 16 at Lifeline Theatre, 6912 N. Glenwood Ave. Kid Prince and Pablo, adapted by Brian Quijada with music composed by Marvin Quijada, and directed by Raquel Torre, makes its Midwest premiere after its initial run at the Kennedy Center in 2019. 

Regular performance times through February 16, are Fridays at 7:30 p.m., Saturdays at 2:30 and 7:30 p.m., and Sundays at 2:30 p.m. 

In the divided Capital City, the ruling class has banned rap and dance after an attempted revolution by the People. Kid Prince is set to inherit the throne…that is, until he meets Pablo, a drummer who performs for underground rap battles. When the two hatch a plan to switch identities, mayhem and music ensue. But by standing in each other’s shoes, Kid Prince and Pablo discover connections that could start a whole new revolution.

From the Mississippi Delta is based on Dr. Holland’s memoir of the same title as she recounts her 20-year journey from humble beginnings in Greenwood, Mississippi to achieving her Ph.D. at the University of Minnesota.  Directed by Lifeline Artistic Director ILesa Duncan (Neverwhere [2018], Middle Passage,) experience a story of triumph in the face of extreme adversity that expertly weaves through the trials and tribulations of Dr. Holland’s life relayed through the bodies and voices of only three actors, all in tribute to one of America’s unsung “sheroes”.

 

Co-producer Pegasus Theatre Chicago is developing a series of city-wide community engagement events and post-performance talk-backs.  Events include: #ProtectBlackGirls: A Panel Discussion on Organizing, Advocacy, and Action; “Dirt to Delta,” a poetry performance; and a writing workshop. ABOUT DR. ENDESHA IDA MAE HOLLAND  

Dr. Endesha Ida Mae Holland (1944-2006) was a writer and an emeritus professor of theater at the University of Southern California. She was best-known for her play, From the Mississippi Delta, which was based on her memoir of the same name. Delta chronicled her journey from Jim Crow-era poverty, rape and prostitution to civil rights activism. Holland became involved with the Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) and participated in numerous civil rights protests. She left Mississippi in 1965 as a dropout to further her education.. Although it took 20 years, she earned her bachelor's, master's degree and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Minnesota

 

ABOUT ILESA DUNCAN, Director and Artistic Director of Lifeline Theatre

ILesa Duncan became Lifeline’s artistic director and joined the ensemble in January 2019, where she directed Neverwhere (Jeff Recommended 2018), and Blue Shadow (2010 KidSeries Premiere). A producer, director, writer, educator and theater-maker, Duncan is an avid collaborator on new work. Other directing credits include Eclipsed (Jeff Recommended), Shakin’ The Mess Outta Misery (Jeff Nominated), Rutherford’s Travels (Jeff Nominated, co-adapter), The Green Book, For Her as a Piano, and Blacula: Young, Black & Undead at Pegasus Theatre (where is the Producing Artistic Director); Broken Fences at 16th Street Theater; The Nativity (Congo Square; Jeff nominated); and the Jeff Award-winning Jar the Floor at ETA Creative Arts. Duncan has also worked with The Goodman, Writers Theatre, Victory Gardens, Rivendell Theatre Ensemble, Stage Left, and Chicago Dramatists, as well as Contemporary American Theatre Company (Ohio), The Alliance Theatre (Atlanta), Arena Stage (Washington DC), and Lincoln Center Theater (New York). As an educator, Duncan has led youth development and arts education programs in Chicago for more than 13 years. She is a past awardee of an NEA/TCG Directing fellowship and a 3 Arts Ragdale’s Fellowship. She is member of the Lincoln Center Theatre Director’s Lab and the Chicago Director’s Lab, and is an associate artist with Chicago Dramatists (where she previously served as education and community engagement director).

Lifeline Theatre Kicks Off its 39th Season with 

Carmilla Episodic Audio Drama

Lifeline Theatre presents a three-part audio drama adaptation of J. Sheridan Le Fanu’s gothic  novella Carmilla, adapted by ensemble member Aly Renee Amidei, directed by Scott Cummins. Young  Laura is sequestered in a remote castle in Eastern Europe when a fortuitous carriage accident delivers a  mysterious house guest, the bewitching Carmilla. While the young women begin to find themselves  entangled in forbidden desire, a series of unexplained, grisly murders befalls the neighboring village and  woods. Could the legends be true…or is it merely superstition? A visceral feast for the ears, experience J.  Sheridan Le Fanu’s entrancing story that inspired Bram Stoker’s Dracula. 

Carmilla, an audio drama, will run Saturday, Oct. 30 – Tuesday, Nov. 30 online. Beginning October 30, the  episodes will air week by week until the final episode at which point all will be available for listening until  November 30. Ticket holders will receive a password to a private webpage where the episodes will be  available for listening. The ticket price is Name Your Price (suggested donation of $20) for full access until  November 30. ABOUT ALY RENEE AMIDEI (ADAPTOR)  

Aly Renee Amidei has been a member of Lifeline’s artistic ensemble since 2012 and originally adapted  Carmilla for Wildclaw Theatre in 2011. Most recently for the Lifeline stage, she adapted and costume  designed Bunny’s Book Club for the KidSeries. Other Lifeline credits include: adapting and designing Lester’s  Dreadful Sweaters and doing costumes for Fabel-ous! She is also a proud ensemble member at Strawdog  Theatre Company and Buffalo Theatre Ensemble. Her costume and makeup designs have been seen at  Michigan Shakespeare Festival, Lakeside Shakespeare Theatre, Irish Theater of Chicago, Magick Theatre in  San Antonio, Buffalo Theater Ensemble, Stage Left, Artistic Home, House Theater, Piven Workshop, and  Vitalist Theater. She is the assistant professor of costume design at the University of North Carolina-Charlotte  and her research focuses on designing for new works and re-envisioned classics. 

ABOUT SCOTT CUMMINS (DIRECTOR)  

Scott Cummins has been involved in over 90 productions throughout the United States either as an actor,  director and/or fight choreographer. He is an Artistic Associate for both WildClaw Theatre Company and  Lakeside Shakespeare Theatre, and a company member of Vs. Theatre Company. He directed the World  Premiere of Carmilla for WildClaw Theatre Company in 2011. Other Chicago productions include: the Midwest  premiere of Scenes From The Big Picture for Seanachai Theatre and I’m Spritual Dammitby Jennifer Weigel  for Route 66 Theatre. Most recently, he directed Pool Boy by Wendy Hopkins for Lost Angels Theatre in Los  Angeles, as well as True West at Vs. Theatre Company. 

Beginning Saturday, Oct. 30, the episodes will air week by week until the final episode at which point all will  be available for listening until November 30. Lifeline Theatre’s KidSeries presents Neither, a world premiere based on the children’s book by Airlie Anderson, co-adapted by Lifeline Theatre ensemble member Bilal Dardai, with guest artists Oly Oxinfry, Emilie Modaff, and Jeff Trainor, music and lyrics by Emilie Modaff, and directed by Oly Oxinfry. 

In the land of “this and that” there are only two kinds of animals, “these and those.” Until one day something different hatches! But it isn’t this or that. Is it both, or is it neither? What do you do when you feel you don’t belong? Based on the book by Airlie Anderson, explore the things that make us unique in this world premiere musical that teaches that it’s our differences that make us special. This production runs approximately one hour with no intermission.

Ever since she overheard the librarian reading outside of the library, Bunny has been enamored with books. But upon reflection, she isn’t sure if animals are allowed in the library. With the help of her furry friends, Bunny decides to share her love for reading and start a book club, but how can they get their hands on those books? Celebrate the joy of reading in this world premiere adaptation of Annie Silvestro’s celebrated picture book.

When I was a child, the Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile stories were favorites of mine, and I adored reading them to my own children when they were young. Making his Lifeline playwriting debut, Timberlake joins Kauzlaric, director of 2012’s Pride and Prejudice and 2016’s Northanger Abbey (Non-Equity Jeff nomination: Best Production–Musical), for a fresh, intimate look at this beloved Austen romp. 

After a successful experiment in matchmaking, Emma Woodhouse is convinced she can do no wrong. So the high-spirited socialite inserts herself in the love lives of everyone around her, meddling despite their wishes, and leaves a tangle of heartbreak in her wake. To restore happiness to her fractured world, Emma must swallow her pride and learn to value the needs of others over her own desires. Navigate the blunders of the heart in this world premiere adaptation of the 1815 romantic comedy by Jane Austen. The production runs approximately 2 hours with an intermission. The novel will be on sale in the lobby.
