CIMMfest WEEKEND UPDATE: Sam Lay in Bluesland Show Added and Brian Wilson Call In #cimmfest

The 7th Chicago International Movies & Music Festival (CIMMfest), announces that the great and reclusive Brian Wilson will call in to John Anderson’s free “Cutting Room Floor” presentation, 7-9pm tonight at Logan Theatre.  Wilson will talk about his new biopic Love and Mercy, starring John Cusack, Elizabeth Banks, Paul Giamatti and Paul Dano, which will be released nationwide on June 5.  Wilson will call into the CIMMcon presentation at 8pm.

Also, the World Premiere of John Anderson’s Sam Lay in Bluesland tomorrow night is sold out.  A second show has been added for 11 p.m. at The Society for Arts.

John Anderson: From the Cutting Room Floor
More than 95% of footage shot for documentaries doesn’t make the final product. In music documentaries, it’s not unusual for classic performances, in-depth interviews and one-of-a-kind material – the stuff that the serious musicphiles consider gold – to wind up on the floor due to time constraints, legal complications and bad hair days. Once again, Grammy-nominated Director John Anderson, (Brian Wilson Presents SMiLE) – whose subjects have included Pete Townshend, Jack White, Neil Young, Ray Davies, Paul McCartney, Brian Wilson, Patti Smith, Elvis Costello, Eric Clapton, The Beach Boys, John Fogerty, Emmylou Harris, James Cotton, Cheap Trick, John Prine, Eric Burdon, Tiny Tim, Kanye West, Andy Summers and John Cage – opens up his vault and shares classic moments that have have passed through his hands on their way to the cutting room floor. Friday, April 17, 7-9pm at Logan Theater Lounge. Admission is free.

Sam Lay in Bluesland (John Anderson, USA).  WORLD PREMIERE
He was on drums when Bob Dylan went electric at Newport. He was in the studio and on the road with blues greats Howlin’ Wolf, Muddy Waters, Little Walter and James Cotton. He was a founding member of the groundbreaking Paul Butterfield Blues Band. He is, at 79, still an active part of the Chicago blues scene and the man some call “the greatest drummer of all time.”  Blues’ most celebrated drummer finally steps into the spotlight in Sam Lay in Bluesland. Recognized almost as much for his sartorial style as for his signature double-shuffle beat — his capes, crowns, canes and cowbells are the stuff of legend— Sam Lay has played a key role in the evolution of the blues for almost 60 years. Against a backdrop of the troubled, racially turbulent 1960s, Lay’s singular life and career is told through his own words, music and personal films in this new feature-length documentary about his life and career, featuring appearances by James Cotton, Charlie Musselwhite, Iggy Pop, Corky Siegel, Barry Goldberg, Nick Gravenites, Jim Keltner, Marcy Levy, Gary Mallaber and Kenny Wayne Shepard

Shows Saturday, April 18, 7pm at Logan Theatre. Filmmaker Q&A follows. SOLD OUT
A second, late show has been added for Saturday, April 18, 11pm at The Society for Arts.

The seventh Chicago International Movies & Music Festival (CIMMfest No. 7), the annual four-day showcase celebrating the inseparable connection between music and movies, hosts a series of free events as part of the Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events’ nascent Lake FX Summit + Expo, a free conference for artists, creative professionals and entrepreneurs, April 16-19, 2015. These free Evening Showcase events feature local talent at venues located throughout Chicago, including the Hyde Park, Pilsen, West Town, Logan Square and Uptown neighborhoods. A full lineup of CIMMfest activities is available at CIMMfest.org.

Live scoring programs, during which bands, orchestras and soloists perform a film’s music score live in front of the projected movie, have become a signature draw for CIMMfest. This year’s offerings for Lake FX include the India-flavored multimedia Buster Keaton Goes to Bollywood live-scored by Sara Ranganathan and Dominic Johnson of New Millennium Orchestra, and a World Premiere original score for Eisenstein’s ¡Que Viva Mexico! by Latin Grammy-nominated Sones de México.

Other CIMMfest highlights at Lake FX include a Muddy Waters 100th Birthday Celebration at Hyde Park’s Harper Theater and screenings of Revenge of the Mekons with the filmmaker and Mekons Jon Langord and Sally Timms in attendance and Kartemquin Films’ Almost There with a filmmaker Q&A at the Logan Theatre.

CIMMfest’s Evening Showcases at Lake FX are free, and admission is on a first-come/first-served basis until venue reaches capacity. You really can't go wrong picking any of these excellent offerings, but we've got ChiIL Mama's/ChiIL Live Shows' top picks in red below. Programs include:

Buster Keaton Goes to Bollywood
Sara Ranganathan and Dominic Johnson of New Millennium Orchestra create a stunning mash-up of East meets West as they take the Buster Keaton film Seven Chances on a trip to Bollywood. Interwoven with brilliant video imaging created by Davis McCarty and highlighted with Kalapriya Dancers, this live scored version of the silent film classic brings together viola and veena, tabla and trance, with an original World Premiere score.
7pm @ 1st Ward/Chop Shop, 2033 W. North Avenue

*Muddy Waters 100th Birthday Celebration
In honor of Muddy Waters’ 100th birthday, CIMMfest presents the Robert Gordon documentary Muddy Waters: Can’t Be Satisfied, following Muddy’s rise from Mississippi farmhand to Blues legend. He made Chicago the home of electric blues and laid the groundwork for rock ’n’ roll. Delta Blues singer Jimmy Burns performs a Muddy Waters-inspired set in the lobby before the screening. Filmmaker Robert Gordon appears in person to discuss the importance of the man and his music.
7pm @ Harper Theater, 5238 S. Harper Ave.

Synergies
Music and sound are brought together through an immersive video environment, live music and experimental short films. A large-scale video installation by Edyta Stepien and Chuck Przybyl wraps the entirety of Chicago Art Dept’s east gallery while experimental shorts curated by the Chicago Art Dept run continuously in the west gallery. Synergies includes a diverse group of Chicago-based artists and filmmakers – including work by Christopher Andrew, Matt Egan, Steve Wood, Most Visual, Chris Hefner, brownshoesonly and Emily Tolan. The night culminates with a live music performance by Modern Tapes recording artist Froe Char within the video installation.
7pm @ Chicago Art Dept, 1932 S. Halsted

*Revenge of the Mekons
Political provocateurs. Social agitators. Punk’s reigning contrarians. The Mekons have been called all this and more. Music Box Films’ feature documentary Revenge of the Mekons chronicles the unlikely story of a group of radical British art students who formed in the first blast of punk rock in 1977. Against all odds—and despite a career consigned to the margins—the Mekons continue to tour and make adventurous and challenging albums, despite the fact that its eight members are separated by thousands of miles across two continents. Adored with cult-like devotion by fans and critics alike, the Mekons have redefined themselves and their music repeatedly over the years while staying true to the punk ethos. But the Mekons are more than just a band. They’re also an art collective whose members make art individually, collectively and in collaboration with other avant-garde artists. A rich and illuminating account of a fascinating, criminally under-recognized band, Revenge of the Mekons is a lively, inspiring and entertaining film—with killer music, to boot. Q&A with director Joe Angio, Jon Langford and Sally Timms follows.
7pm @ Logan Theatre, 2646 N. Milwaukee Ave.
Saturday, April 18

Sones de México live scores ¡Que viva México!
Mexican folk sextet Sones de México creates and performs a unique original score for the 1930s film ¡Que Viva Mexico! Produced by Upton Sinclair, the 1931 shot by pioneer Soviet filmmaker Sergei Eisenstein uses dramatic elements of surrealism and expressionism to document the history of Mexico’s peasant uprising and the Mexican Revolution of 1910 that inspired Russia's own revolution in 1917. The scenes span different regions of Mexico including Oaxaca and Chiapas. Sones de México Ensemble will perform this film score live using regional folk music from those areas.
7pm @The National Museum of Mexican Art, 1852 W. 19th St.

Almost There
Kartemquin Films-produced documentary Almost There is a coming-of-(old)-age story about 83-year-old Peter Anton, an "outsider" artist living in isolated and crippling conditions, whose world changes when two filmmakers discover his work and storied past. Shot over eight years, Almost There documents Anton's first major exhibition and how the controversy it generates forces him to leave his childhood home. Each layer revealed reflects on the intersections of social norms, elder care and artistic expression. A Q&A with filmmakers Aaron Wickenden and Dan Rybicky follows the screening.
7pm @ Logan Theatre, 2646 N. Milwaukee Ave.
