We love it when our friends & favorites play well together, and when they introduce us to new friends too. Here at ChiIL Mama, we've interviewed Little Miss Ann, recorded her live, and partnered up on giveaways and concert features for years. We've also covered Old Town School ribbon cuttings, concerts, festivals and more. Red Yarn from Portland is new to us, and we're excited to check them out. They performed together last year at SXSW and now they're going to rock Chicago!

Chicago's Little Miss Ann, is the reigning "Queen of the Kindie Scene" in Chicago. She's a Chi, IL mom, an award winning kids musician, former public school teacher, and a veteran instructor at Chicago's Old Town School of Folk Music. We're jazzed she's hosting Portland folk musician "Red Yarn" for an all-ages hootenanny this Sunday. Get your tickets and bring your Little Folk, Rock Tots, and puppet lovin' progeny to Old Town School at 11am Sunday. Don't miss this!

Little Miss Ann has released five albums including her recent Parents' Choice award winning album "Keep On." Red Yarn blends puppetry and engaging folk music to engage the whole family in singing, playing and dancing along. He is celebrating the release of a new album, "Red Yarn's Old Barn."

BEST FESTS: Square Roots Festival Is Full of Family Friendly Fun, World Class Music & Craft Beer 7/8-10

RETURNS TO LINCOLN SQUARE JULY 8-10 
Craft Beer and Music Experience Includes 3 Days, 50 Bands on 4 Stages and 30 Regional Craft Brews


This weekend ChiIL Mama will be ChiILin' on Chicago's north side at the annual Square Roots Festival in Lincoln Square. Although we're still nostalgic for the defunct Old Town Folk and Roots Fest, Square Roots is a standout among street fests, with world class music and plenty of family friendly fun.

The one-of-a-kind craft beer and music experience, returns July 8-10 with more than 50 acts on 4 stages, and 30 regional craft brews paired with Lincoln Square’s finest restaurants and local artisans. Presented by the Old Town School of Folk Music and the Lincoln Square Ravenswood Chamber of Commerce, the three-day festival will feature music, dance parties, participatory jams and plenty of family fun activities.

Events Details:
Dates: Friday, July 8, 5-10 p.m.; Saturday, July 9, noon-11 p.m.; Sunday, July 10, noon-9 p.m.

Location: Lincoln Avenue, between Montrose & Wilson Ave.

Cost: Suggested donation of $10 for adults, $5 for seniors/kids, $20 for families

Proceeds from Square Roots support both Old Town School of Folk Music and Lincoln Square Ravenswood Chamber programs, including music education scholarships, local shopping initiatives, ongoing community events and public farmers markets, as well as free summer concerts and artist-in-residence programs at Chicago Public Schools.

The Music:
Festival goers can expect multiple music stages, both inside the Old Town School and outside on Lincoln Avenue, programmed with an eclectic and vibrant mix of performers from local indie rockers to world music stars to Old Town School teaching artists and students.

Musical acts include Cracker, best known for its gold-selling 1993 album, Kerosene Hat, which includes the hit songs "Low" and "Euro-Trash Girl.” Other acts include Lydia Loveless, Dale Watson, Debo Band, Lera Lynn, and Sarah Jarosz.


The Beer
In addition to great music, Square Roots is proud to be one of Chicago’s best craft beer destinations. The festival features the best local and regional craft breweries with a wide variety of styles and flavors. With special tappings throughout the festival, there’s something to quench every type of thirst. 
Several popular Midwest breweries will have a presence at Square Roots including 5 Rabbit Cerveceria, Arcade Brewery, Empirical Brewing, Founders, Half Acre Beer Company, Hinterland Brewery, Lagunitas, Metropolitan Brewing Company, Northman House Cider, Penrose, Revolution, Sketchbook Brewing, Temperance Brewery, Ten Ninety, Tocaya, and Two Brothers. The Food
Lincoln Square’s restaurant scene will also be on hand serving up amazing dishes for guests to enjoy with the craft beer pairings. Participating restaurants include Gather, Byron’s Hot Dogs, Bistro Campagne, Bo’s Concessions, El Campeon LLC, Feed Your Head LLC, Groundswell Coffee Roasters, LC Pho Restaurant, Mash Kitchen, Taco in a Bag, The Budlong, and The Grafton. Square Roots is proud to welcome nearly 35 market vendors to this year’s festival, all based in Illinois and nearly half from the Lincoln Square neighborhood and surrounding areas, making it a true community event.

The Old Town School of Folk Music, considered the largest community school of the arts in the United States, teaches and celebrates music and cultural expressions rooted in the traditions of diverse American and global communities. Founded in 1957, the Old Town School offers classes in music, dance, theater and visual arts that span a wide range of artistic genres, presents over 400 concerts in two intimate and acoustically superb concert halls, and supports artist-in-residence programs in underserved Chicago Public Schools.

One of a Kind Spring Show At Merchandise Mart April 29–May 1


This Friday, we'll be ChiILin' in Chi, IL at the inaugural One of a Kind Spring Show! This year’s show features 300 juried artists along with special featured entertainment including a first ever partnership with Lillstreet Art Center (where I used to make pottery back in the day, BTW).

MORE THAN GREAT SHOPPING AT 
INAUGURAL ONE OF A KIND SPRING SHOW
Partnerships with Lillstreet, Old Town School of Folk Music and More

The first annual One of a Kind Spring Show at The Mart (222 W Merchandise Mart Plaza) April 29May 1 will provide shoppers with a full three days of fun and creative activities.

In addition to 300 talented artists selling their work, the show will feature fashion shows, gourmet demonstrations, live performances by musicians from the Old Town School of Folk Music and an exciting, first-time collaboration with Chicago’s Lillstreet Art Center. 

The One of a Kind Spring Show will host the following entertainment programming and special
amenities:

Lillstreet Art Center
For the first time ever, the One of a Kind Show is partnering with the Lillstreet Art Center, a Chicago institution that has been supporting art in the Chicago community for 40 years. The art center will host complimentary demonstrations, workshops and hands-on experiences throughout each day of the show. Lillstreet will introduce shoppers to their unique class offerings including ceramics, metals, drawing and painting, textiles and printmaking that are perfect for the whole family including some classes specifically for children. 

Shoppers can return home notonly with wonderful work from the One of a Kind Spring Show artists but also their own artistic creations. For a full list of Lillstreet programming at the show CLICK HERE.

Music at the Patio Bar by Old Town School of Folk Music
Talented musicians from the Old Town School of Folk Music will perform live music throughout the show at the Patio Bar, located in the center of the show floor. For information on musiciansand the schedule featured at the show please CLICK HERE.

Fashion Shows
Shoppers can enjoy One of a Kind Spring fashions on the runway. Women’s wear, jewelry and accessories will be featured on the Fashion Stage on the east side of the show floor. The One of a Kind Spring Show will present three fashion shows, Friday at 6 p.m. and Saturday and
Sunday at 1 p.m.

Gourmet Market Demonstrations
Shoppers can indulge their taste buds at the show’s Gourmet Market on the west side of the show floor. Guests can also watch cooking demonstrations by The Chopping Block as well as Gourmet artisans.


Fine Art Gallery
Shopper’s looking for museum ready pieces can visit the Fine Art Gallery in the center of the show floor. The gallery will feature a curated exhibition of painting and sculpture featured at the
show.

The One of a Kind Spring Show will take place April 29 from 11 a.m. 8 p.m., April 30 from 10a.m. 7 p.m. and May 1 from 10 a.m.5 p.m. at The Mart, 222 Merchandise Mart Plaza, 7th Floor, Chicago, IL.
