GUEST REVIEW:
by Dugan Kenaz-Mara

I loved Cirque Du Soleil’s “‘Twas the Night Before”. As a whole, it was a huge spectacle and incorporated many interesting acts, each with their own unique sensory experience. Some of the acts were truly unique in their execution, such as the Hotel Cart and Aerial Lamp acts, where performers used unusual objects as aerial apparatuses. These acts brought me joy as a performer to see how the concept of what can be used to make a performance can really extend as far as the performer’s imagination allows.

Some of the acts brought new life to acts usually overdone in the circus: for example, in the Diabolo act, “‘Twas the Night Before” had performers use long ropes fit for 10 person jump-roping to pass diabolos around audience participants. This is something I have never seen before and it brought a new light to what could be done to add new light to a typically overdone skill in the circus.

Speaking of lights, the lighting in this show was one of the main focuses and is extremely well done. The performance includes everything from handheld lights ‘passed’ between performers to chaser lights in the Hoola hoops to using a light for an aerial act. And to compliment all of that further the stage lights bring out the true colors of each act, especially when they shimmer off of the enormous strands of tinsel used as the set.

The costumes were also spectacular, as is usual in Cirque du Soleil shows. All of the costumes were really expressive of the characters, some even bringing a new idea to how a character is presented, for example, the character Jolly being portrayed in most of the show as having a ragged soot-stained cloak, rather than the ‘typical’ Santa outfit of a red suit and white beard. Overall, it tells a really nice story about family and passion, and how stories can connect us all in a time of digitization where we are less likely to spend quality time together by letting us find our passion or ‘spark’ and share it with the world.

Dugan Kenaz-Mara is studying theatre (performance) at Northwestern University. He was born and raised on Chicago theatre productions since early childhood. He has also studied circus arts/performance at Actors Gymnasium in Evanston and CircEsteem in Chicago. The past two seasons, he spent summers on cast at Bristol Renaissance Faire.

Cirque du Soleil and The Madison Square Garden Company (NYSE: MSG) have partnered up on the all-new family production, ‘Twas the Night Before…, which makes its debut at The Chicago Theatre this holiday season. 'Twas the Night Before... is an exhilarating spin on the beloved Christmas classic as only Cirque du Soleil could imagine. This festive show about the wonders of sharing and friendship promises to spark lasting memories in the hearts of families this holiday season. The production is now playing at The Chicago Theatre, 175 N. State Street, through December 8, 2019 for 17 performances. Tickets are on sale now.

Cirque du Soleil’s first-ever Christmas show, ‘Twas the Night Before... is a flurry of love, Christmas cheer, rip-roaring fun and hugely lovable characters that will become a new tradition for families to cherish. Join Isabella, a curious girl who’s become jaded by the hoopla surrounding Christmas, as she is whisked away to an upside-down, inside-out world where she meets characters inspired by the original timeless poem. Discover what happened before Santa dropped in!

The international casting lineup features Tuedon Ariri (Canada) performing the Aerial Hammock; Katharine Arnold (United Kingdom) performing Aerial Cart; Rosie Axon (United Kingdom) and Adam Jukes (England) performing Inline Skating; Ming-En Chen, Tsung-Ying Lin, Ting-Chung Wang and Chia-Hao Yu (Taipei) performing Diablo; Michele Clark (United States) performing Hula Hoop and as Isabella; Nicole Faubert and Guillaume Paquin (Canada) in Aerial Duo Straps; Francis Gadbois (Canada) performing Box Juggling; Quentin Greco (France), Jacob Gregorie (Canada), Chauncey Kroner (United States), Timothé Vincent (France), Jinge Wang (China) and Evan Tomlinson Weintraub (Canada) performing Hoop Diving and Acrobatic Table;  Alexis Vigneault (Canada) performing Aerial Acrobatic Lamp and Jenna Beltran, Samuel Moore, Paul Ross, Diana Schoenfield and Bianca Vallar (United States), along with Kalila Hermant (Belgium), as ensemble dancers.

REVIEW: Sesame Street Live: Make Your Magic at The Chicago Theatre

ChiIL Mama's Chi, IL Picks List:
Family Friendly Theatre Fun

 Guest Review
by kimberly robb baker

Sesame Street Live: Make Your Magic surprised me by entertaining all my kids—toddler to tween!

We all enjoyed meeting one of the Muppets pre-show at a sweet little puppet theatre in the lobby. The storyline, Elmo struggling to learn a magic trick to perform with Justin The Magician in front of all of his Sesame street friends, was engaging.

Of course, the little ones who love Sesame Street are simply thrilled to see their favorite characters in real life. There was lots of audience interaction and opportunities to stand up and move, incorporating the inevitable wiggles into the show. My tween appreciated the rap and dance and was keeping count of how many Fortnight moves were incorporated.

Creative lighting, sets, and puppetry brought the story to life and delighted all in attendance. We particularly enjoyed the cookie-baking scene, in which Cookie and his cohort run a cookie truck, and one in which Abby and Elmo’s patience is rewarded by seeing butterflies come out of their cocoon (nice psychedelic puppetry there!).

The message of perseverance—and the “power of yet”—leaves the whole family entertained and inspired with an important life lesson.

It's the day of the Great Adventure Bay Race between Adventure Bay’s Mayor Goodway and Foggy Bottom’s Mayor Humdinger, but Mayor Goodway is nowhere to be found. PAW Patrol to the rescue! Ryder summons Marshall, Chase, Skye, Rubble, Rocky, Zuma and Everest to rescue Mayor Goodway and to run the race in her place. Using their unique skills and teamwork, the pups show that “no job is too big, no pup is too small,” and share lessons for all ages about citizenship, social skills and problem-solving as they make several heroic rescues on their race to the finish line.

The performance features up-tempo music and a cleverly written script that is a wonderful introduction to live theater for kids. Classic theatrical scenery, along with a high-tech video wall visually transports families to an authentic PAW Patrol environment, including locations from the TV series, like Adventure Bay, The Lookout, Seal Island, Farmer Yumi's farm and Jake's Mountain. Special interactive video allows the audience to participate via interviews, solve clues with the Pups, follow Mayor Goodway and much more.

Tickets are available through all Ticketmaster Outlets and in person at The Chicago Theatre box office. A limited number of V.I.P. (Very Important Pup) Packages are available. V.I.P. package features premium show seating, a commemorative lanyard, and an after-show Meet & Greet with PAW Patrol Live! walk-around characters.

Adam Sandler, David Spade, Nick Swardson and Rob Schneider LIVE at The Chicago Theatre 5/23

THE DO-OVER TOUR
COMES TO
THE CHICAGO THEATRE MAY 23
Netflix sends Adam Sandler and comic pals on tour ahead of movie release

I think my husband, teens, and I have managed to see every Adam Sandler movie ever made, some multiple times, mostly thanks to Netflix. Somehow Adam Sandler has made a hugely successful career out of playing more or less the same guy in every film, yet his characters do grow and learn a few life lessons during each story arc, and there's something compelling about Sandler that resonates with the modern, American "everyman" archetype. If you're a fan, you're in luck. This month you can catch the man's comedic stylings live and on Netflix. With the addition of David Spade and Nick Swardson hilarity is sure to ensue.

Netflix is sending Adam Sandler and his fellow THE DO-OVER stars David Spade and Nick Swardson on the road, along with longtime Sandler collaborator Rob Schneider, for The Do-Over Tour, where the comedians and longtime pals will deliver live performances for their fans. The seven-city tour kicks off May 19 in San Francisco. The Do-Over Tour comes to The Chicago Theatre Monday, May 23, 8pm. Tickets start at $45. THE DO-OVER will be available on Netflix May 27.

In THE DO-OVER, Adam Sandler plays “Max” and David Spade plays “Charlie,” old friends tired of their mundane lives who reunite at their 25th high school reunion for the ultimate mulligan: they decide to wipe the slate clean for a do-over. After faking their deaths and assuming new identities, could their lives be better the second time around?

THE DO-OVER, the second of four films in Sandler’s deal with Netflix, also stars Paula Patton, Sean Astin, Renée Taylor, Luis Guzmán, Kathryn Hahn, Michael Chiklis, Catherine Bell, Natasha Leggero, Torsten Voges and Matt Walsh.  It was directed by Stevin Brill from a script penned by Kevin Barnett and Chris Pappas.

THE GRINCH STEALS THE SHOW NOVEMBER 20 –29; MANY MATINEE PERFORMANCES AVAILABLE

DR. SEUSS’ HOW THE GRINCH STOLE CHRISTMAS! THE MUSICAL
TAKES OVER THE CHICAGO THEATRE
THIS HOLIDAY SEASON

Here at ChiIL Mama, we caught Dr. Seuss' How The Grinch Stole Christmas The Musical years ago and adored it. We can't wait for it's return next month. The sets and Who costumes were incredibly colorful & whimsical, and they made the most of casting characters in an extreme range of heights and weights for maximum comic effect. We're so excited to see The Chicago Theatre production.

Come see this childhood Seuss classic jump off the pages and into your hearts this holiday season. Cut the clutter this year with experiential gifts like theatre. Create lasting memories for all the generations in your family with tickets to a show!

MSG Entertainment is proud to present Dr. Seuss' How The Grinch Stole Christmas! The Musical at The Chicago Theatre, 175 N. State Street, for 17 performances only, with many matinees available, Thursday, November 20 through Saturday, November 29. The classic Christmas story by Dr. Seuss springs to life on stage bringing the spirit of the holiday season to children and adults alike. The limited engagement in Chicago has been called “100 times better than any bedside story” by The New York Times.

Audiences will find their hearts growing a few sizes (along with the Grinch’s heart, of course) when they witness the magic of the holiday tale on stage, which will feature the hit songs “You’re a Mean One, Mr. Grinch” and “Welcome Christmas,” both from the original animated television special. Max the Dog serves as the story’s narrator as the scheming Grinch plans to steal Christmas away from The Whos, the loveable characters that understand and embrace the true meaning of the holiday. When the Grinch realizes that he can’t take Christmas away from Who-ville by taking presents, he returns the gifts and decorations and joins the festivities, proving that all it takes is a little kindness and joy to grow the heart of any Grinch.

Dr. Seuss' How The Grinch Stole Christmas! The Musical features spectacular sets specially designed for The Chicago Theatre with costumes inspired by Dr. Seuss’ illustrations, while the Music and Book of Mel Marvin and Timothy Mason only accentuate this timeless narrative. Embraced by generation after generation, The Grinch Stole Christmas! The Musical is a holiday tradition for audiences of all ages.

The 2014 production is directed by Matt August and choreographed by Bob Richard based on the original choreography by John DeLuca and originally created by three-time Tony Award® winning director Jack O’Brien. Casting for the Chicago production will be announced at a later date.

The performance schedule for Dr. Seuss' How The Grinch Stole Christmas! The Musical at The Chicago Theatre, November 20-29, is: Thursday, Nov. 20 at 11am & 7pm; Friday, Nov. 21 at 7pm; Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 22 and 23, at 11am, 3pm, and 7pm; Tuesday, Nov. 25 at 7pm; Wednesday, Thanksgiving Eve, Nov. 26 at 7pm; Friday and Saturday, Nov. 28 and 29 at 11am, 3pm, and 7pm.
