Photo Recap: Women Driving Excellence at The Chicago Auto Show 2016

ChiILin' in Chi, IL With
Women Driving Excellence 2016

Women driving and women drivers are no longer a punchline, but a serious force to reckon with! Thanks to Chicagonista and Women Driving Excellence (#WDE16) for raising the bar on Women's Day at The Chicago Auto Show once again and presenting an incredibly inspiring day of programing with some of Chicago's finest female movers and shakers. Every year I am in awe after Women Driving Excellence, and motivated to go out and up my game for the coming year and do something amazing.

Here at ChiIL Mama, we've partnered up with Chicagonista and Women Driving Excellence for 3 years now. It was my great pleasure to be invited back as an official writer/photographer for this fantastic annual event. Thanks to Nissan, Jewel, and all the great sponsors for supporting such an excellent showcase of diverse talent. We have been compensated for spreading the word. As always, all opinions are my own.

On February 16th, The Chicago Auto Show prominently featured Women Driving Excellence once again. This was my 3rd year covering it as one of Chicagonista's official writers. I've come to truly value this event and eagerly anticipate it. I'm actively job hunting right now, after years of freelance writing and managing both our family business and several award winning blogs, while raising my children, so the "Jumpstart Your Network – A power hour hosted by Chicago’s top Networkers" was of particular interest to me this year. I met many fascinating women and exchanged business cards with quite a few new contacts.

Next, the Honoring Trailblazing Women Presentation emceed by Janet Davies-ABC7 News was nothing short of inspiring. This year’s honorees included Lisa Madigan-Illinois Attorney General, Marilynn Gardner-Navy Pier President & CEO, Dominique Jordan Turner– Chicago Scholars President & CEO, Kathleen Henson-Henson Consulting Founder & CEO, Dee Alexander– Song Stylist.

It was fascinating and encouraging to hear from each of the honorees in turn, and we couldn't have asked for a better emcee than the charismatic Janet Davies.

As if the Trailblazing Women weren't enough, they were followed by a panel of 3 Leading Women in Tech sharing their thoughts on trends, collaborating, startups, and how to foster relationships for business growth. New this year, the panel was lead by Katy Lynch, CEO at Techweek, with Elisa All Founder & CEO of 30Second Mobile, and Yana Nirshberg of ParadigmNEXT.

Of course we also adore joining MJ Tam, Beth Rosen, and Nancy Loo, who host the #ChicagonistaLIVE! Talk Show, Chicago’s first social talk show. We join them live as often as possible, for their monthly shows, and follow along on line and social media when we can't be there in person. Their rapport is a hoot and the shows are always lively and informative, with stellar guests.

Finally, the 2016 WDR event featured a new GPS Pitch Engine Contest where five aspiring entrepreneurs made presentations to a panel of experts in search of rising businesses. The Pitch Engine Contest was presented in partnership with Inventorz Network Co-Founder Dhana Cohen and will be judged by Dahlia Saper of Saper Law and Debi Lilly of A Perfect Event.

Check out lots of recaps from the 4th year of Women Driving Excellence on line, by looking for the hashtag #WDR16. We can't speak highly enough about this celebration of women who help start, accelerate, fuel, and steer others to excellence. Sure the car puns are fun, but don't underestimate the caliber of women involved in all aspects of WDR. From the planners, publicists, and panelists to the incredible honorees, this event is a power house of wonderful women.

WDE is a collaborative community created to connect entrepreneurial and established women in business, philanthropy, media, government and community leadership positions. WDE provides women multimedia access to industry influencers using in person and digital social platforms.

The #WDE16 event was created by two social media mavens, MJ Tam and Beth Rosen of the popular ChicagonistaLIVE! online talk show. While there are many activities that appeal to women at the Chicago Auto Show, they felt the need to create a special program that would recognize women who exemplified unique vision and talent that fueled the fire of passion in the community. And passion and authenticity were the themes of the day, mentioned many times over in anecdotes, answers and advice.

It's incredibly empowering to celebrate women by lifting them up through the use of powerful social networks. And the WDE events are excellent at inspiring all women to continue in empowering and engaging other women to do greatness for each other. This annual event always includes a full day program honoring and celebrating innovative, entrepreneurial, accomplished, businesswomen in Chicagoland.

ChiIL Mama's Adventures at Women Driving Excellence #WDE15 #NissanCAS #AD

I've got to admit, 25 years ago, when I was a struggling writer/actor newly out of college, I worked the Chicago Auto Show for Saab, in what I only half jokingly refer to as my "booth bimbo" days. I had a college degree with honors, yet the market seemed more interested in my face than my brains. And I was one of the lucky ones among the Chicago Auto Show women. We got to wear t-shirts instead of bikinis, like so many of the "models" were required to work in. Still, we had to wear heels and hose with our short shorts and endure thousands of men hitting on us day after day and panning up and down us with giant, late 80s era video cameras.

Thankfully, 25 years later, "Women's Day" at The Chicago Auto Show doesn't mean token complimentary manicures or more bikini babes. In 2015 women are THE major automotive purchasing force and a force to reckon with, and the women being recognized at the auto show include doctors, lawyers, politicians, police, entrepreneurs and TV producers. And not one of them was required to show up for work in a bikini!

It was our great pleasure to partner up with ChicagonistaLIVE and Nissan for Women Driving Excellence for the second year. Last Tuesday was indeed an enriching, educational, and fun day with informative, inspiring women. I'm also thrilled to say I'm back, working The Auto Show, and getting paid for my writing skills, with Media credentials around my neck, and no short shorts and high heels required!

Smart blonde, Janet Davies, getting honored instead of ogled at The Chicago Auto Show, with emcee, Andrea Metcalf.

    Women's Day, Feb. 17, 2015

I couldn't possibly choose a favorite story among the nominees. We all laughed together, and commiserated. I did enjoy Debi Lilly's story of hiring on friends of her little brother as a summer favor, and how that ended up being her golden ticket to work with Oprah. The honorees had empowering stories of overcoming good old boy networks, husbands who step up to help with the kids while the women fly out to pursue their careers, stick shift skills beating the boys for a car parking job, and so many more tiny triumphs and brave chances these women all took to follow their dreams.

Another high point of the day was the medley of tunes from First Date the Musical, sung by the male and female leads. The show is currently playing at Royal George Theatre and highly recommended. We had a chance to catch opening night, and it's hilarious, heartfelt and too true. Check back with ChiIL Live Shows for our full review and video clips from their performance at Women Driving Excellence that will be up shortly.

Thanks again to Nissan for sponsoring this excellent annual event. And thanks to producers MJ Tam & Beth Rosen (inspiring women in their own right) of the #ChicagonistaLIVE show in coordination with the Chicago Tribune.

This time last year we were in the market for a new car and I'm excited to admit that we bought that Nissan Rogue I was ogling last year at the Chicago Auto Show. I've been driving it since last March and it's definitely excellent. (No, I didn't get the "ChiIL Mama Rogue" as awesome as it was... I went for the slightly more subtle, gorgeous graphite blue!) We got the 7 seater and it's perfect for occasional visits from the grandparents, carpooling, and taking friends to fun events with us. When Nissan steps up and takes women seriously, and backs some seriously brilliant women, it makes me even prouder to be driving a Rogue.

Thanks also to State Farm. We insure our cars with them, and last year when someone rear ended me and totaled my car at a Kennedy on ramp red light they made the claims process pretty painless. They gave us a rental car while we went car hunting and a decent settlement that went toward the down payment on my sweet new Nissan Rogue!

We were quite happy that Women Driving Excellence brought back the networking sessions this year. I made quite a few invaluable connections and came home with a stack of business cards. Thanks to Nawbo (National Women's Business Organization) & Epwng (Exclusive Professional Women's Networking Group) for facilitating. The honorees recognition portion was beyond empowering, with a fabulous assortment of women who are all amazing in their fields. We've been to numerous tapings of The ChicagonistaLIVE show, and it's always a treat to see the rapport of the fab four of the Chicagonista team, imparting wit and wisdom.

Chicago Auto Show Women Driving Excellence Photo Recap #WDE14 #Spon #ChiILRides

Disclosure:  We're elated to be partnering up with ChicagonistaLIVE, Nissan, RedEye, Cars.com and The Chicago Tribune this year, for Women's Day at the auto show and have been compensated for sharing this information with our readers.

ChiIL out with ChiIL Mama for news, reviews, interviews & adventures in Chi, IL and beyond.

Hey Nissan--rockin' ChiIL Mama Rogue!  It matches my blog header, business cards, and wallet!

Here at ChiIL Mama, it's been a thrill to be back at The Chicago Auto Show 2014 for both media only days last Thursday and Friday as well as Women's Day on Tuesday, with ChicagonistaLIVE.

In past years we've done a number of week long test drives, auto videos reviews, and photo features, and we'll be continuing our Auto Coverage for 2014 under the new heading ChiIL Rides.

The Women Driving Excellence program on Tuesday was a highlight of The 2014 Auto Show.  Check out our full slideshow right here.

It's truly a treat to see so many smart, talented women being honored.  This year, eight amazing women – Karyn Calabrese (restaurateur and author), Mary Couzin (CEO and Founder of Chicago Toy and Game), Jory DesJardins, Elisa Camahort Page and Lisa Stone (BlogHer founders), Susanna Jung (president and CEO of Price Futures Group), Sherren Leigh (CEO of Today’s Chicago Woman magazine) and Natalie Martinez (NBC Chicago reporter) – received recognition for their outstanding efforts.

The day began with a bang as children from St. Therese Chinese Catholic School performed a lion dance and a ribbon dance for Chinese New Year.  We had a mid day stretch and a bit of inspiration from fitness celeb, Andrea Metcalf, and cabaret stylings by Miss Lori.

Later Andrea interviewed me on camera for a segment on moms' car purchasing priorities!  Safety and dependability are a given. And sometimes the little things aren't so unimportant.  Rear seat cup holders would be an incredible improvement, since I drive tweens around daily who need food & drinks in the car on tight turn around days, between school and team practices. No cup holders equates LOTS more spills.

I got to borrow a Camaro SS convertible for a week last summer and I LOVE test driving powerful sports cars. But the reality is, I drive the city streets for hours, on carpool detail, and rarely can legally get above 30. So at this juncture, safety rating, reliability, passenger space, useful xtras, and cargo room are my huge priorities.

That said, at the risk of bringing up horrid, archaic female stereotypes about women only caring about car color... I have always wanted a bright blue car and never driven anything in a color I remotely liked in the 30 years I've had a license.  We actually are in the market right now, to replace my aging burgundy RAV4, so this new blue Rogue had me fairly drooling!

I also totally geeked out on the Chicago themed Nissan Rogue I nicknamed The ChiIL Mama Mobile.

It was a joy to meet and network with so many incredible women.  We were particularly jazzed to meet Elisa Camahort Page of
BlogHer fame, and 2010 Olympic speed skater, Nancy Swider-Peltz Jr., who gave me an autograph & a personal note for my 10 year old daughter, Sage, aspiring Olympic gymnast. Nancy's coach/mother/namesake is in Sochi right now, and you can follow along on her Olympic adventures via blog, by clicking here.

It was a pleasure to be serenaded by some of the Broadway touring cast of Phantom of The Opera. They had a post performance Q &A and I was one of the lucky few to score an autographed Phantom of The Opera poster. Sage and I had press tickets to review opening night and we loved it! Sage raved about all the parts she enjoyed, but conceded she was also a bit creeped out by the Phantom.  She even coined a new term and told me she'd been "dramatized" ie: traumatized by drama.

Thanks again to Chicagonista for inviting us to be one of the official bloggers to cover the Women Driving Excellence awards, ChicagonistaLIVE, clips from Broadway in Chicago's Phantom of the Opera and more on Women's Day, February 11th.
