PARENTS' NIGHT OUT: Liquid Soul and March Fourth at Lincoln Hall (21+) #HighlyRecommended

INCOMING:
Chi, IL Live Shows on Our Radar Tues 6/10 at Lincoln Hall
8:00 PM   21+  $14.00

ChiIL Live Shows will be there shooting stills. It's our 14th wedding anniversary and we're way beyond jazzed to get to spend it with two of the most fun bands to see LIVE. We can't wait!  Highly recommended.

Here's some crazy cool partner acro on STILTS that we shot when March Fourth played Martyrs last year!  Check it out. Then go see them LIVE already.

Liquid Soul

Click the links below for loads of our past original photos, videos and coverage on BOTH bands.

A kaleidoscope of musical and visual energy mere “mortal” bands cannot compete with, Aside from their marching band themed costumes, and multi member drum and brass corp, M4 is far from a “marching band” in any traditional sense (though this group of about 20 has been known to parade down Main Street before taking the stage). The show will take you on a journey from the swamps of Louisiana to the gypsy camps of eastern Europe and through the deepest grooves of American funk, rock, and jazz then boiling it all together in cinematic fashion with high-stepping stilt-acrobatics and dazzling dancers. They’ve headlined too many major festivals to name, multiple times, as well as playing prestigious venues from The Kennedy Center to a cultural exchange tour of China.

(We've been huge Mars Williams fans since back in the Psychedelic Furs days.   Here's Mars in orbit at Chicago Folk and Roots Fest 2011 with Soul Sonic Sirkus.)

Liquid Soul, the Grammy-nominated combo that has built its reputation on a compelling mix of jazz, hip-hop, funk and hard-bop, makes its Telarc debut with the release of One-Two Punch.

Pioneers of the acid-jazz movement during their early days in the Chicago club scene of the mid-1990s, Liquid Soul has evolved over the past dozen years into a musical compendium of sounds and styles that starts with jazz and embraces hip-hop, R&B, dance, funk, techno, world, spoken-word and much more.

Led by innovative saxophonist/composer Mars Williams, the eight-piece collective has conquered nearly every corner of the U.S. and is looking to turn up the juice in Europe and other parts of the world via their Telarc debut.

Here's the latest Via March Fourth:

My, what a busy summer!
MarchFourth is on a mission to visit each and every one of you this year it seems (more info about the US fall tour coming soon). Seriously. It will take a lot of scrolling to get to the bottom of this show list! From San Diego, California to Portland, Maine to Tampa, Florida, and from the mountains of Telluride, CO (8700 ft) to the streets of New Orleans, LA (0 ft) and everywhere in between, there's a pretty good chance we're headed your way (except maybe the southwest, since we just returned from there). Let's hope the A/C in the bus is fixed for good this time, because this summer is going to be HOT!!!

For a little taste of life on the road with M4, I suggest you check out stilter/stunter Phill's blogHe's kind of new to M4, joining after stilt veteran Sid Simpatico retired last summer due to a knee injury. Phill's been writing these great tour recap posts on Facebook for a while, but now he's taken to the blogosphere. I'm sure there will be much to write about this summer, so keep an eye there to follow our adventures! Here's a video from our birthday show this year of Phill and the gang doing stilt acro to "Surfunk" (a newish song by Taylor Aglipay).

Riot Fest Withdrawl? We'll Tell You Where To Go...

Here are our top 3 favorites:

Reggies-great audio in a sweet space, just south of the city.   Highly recommended for the best live punk & metal bands & a variety of other genres.

Late Bar-Wednesdays are garage, punk and R' n 'R, but Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturdays are pretty great, too.    Check the schedule for new wave club classics, subculture Fridays and more.

  • Subculture Fridays. A different subculture event every Friday night...punk, mod, garage, ska, rockabilly, psychobilly, and more!

A night of drinking, dancing, socializing, networking and non-stop music since 1991. For die hard rockabilly devotees and civilian music fans. Over the last decade, this highly organized vibrant jam session, held the first Thursday of every month at Martyrs', has become rockabilly central for many of the musicians & fans of Chicago's American roots scene.
Although the monthly jam is devoted to rockabilly, the Big C Jamboree has also offered the span of '40's-'50's Amereicn roots music from Hillbilly Boogie to Western Swing, Jump Blues and 1st generation Rock-n-Roll. The night is run swiftly and simply: a host band performs a short set, followed by a myriad of roots musicians who do 3 songs each.
The party like atmosphere includes socializing, drinking & dancing galore while the rotating line-up onstage usually features the raucous sounds of pompadoured rockabilly musicians wailing away on upright basses and hallow-bodied electric guitars; and there's NEVER a cover! It's one of the most dedicated evenings of music in the city.

ChiIL Mama's top windy kindie picks this week:

1.  Laura Doherty's new CD Release Party at Martyrs.

Laura Doherty Band - “Shining Like a Star” CD Release Concert, Sat. Oct.1, Noon at Martyrs!

Laura Doherty, Chicago’s pop sweetheart for kids, is releasing her long awaited second album, “Shining Like A Star,” with a full-band family concert at Martyrs’, 3855 N. Lincoln Ave. in Chicago on Saturday, Oct. 1st, 12:00 Noon. Tickets are $8/adults, $5/kids ages 1 and up. This show kicks off a series of midwest shows celebrating the release of the new CD, including Fall dates in St. Louis, MO and Madison, WI.

Laura’s musical adventures first took us into the world of big-city-living, as seen through a child’s eyes, with her debut Parent’s Choice award-winning CD “Kids in the City” in 2009. With an ear for a catchy melody, she takes us on a whole new adventure that explores the ways that children and families have fun together.

Laura teamed up again with award-winning producer Rich Rankin of Mosaic Music, and much like “Kids in the City”, her signature, breezy folk-pop sound fills the record, with sweet harmonies and acoustic instruments. “Shining Like a Star” shines with Chicago talent, featuring nationally-known kids rocker Ralph Covert (of Ralph’s World) singing vocals on the title track, and tap dance sensation Reggio “the Hoofer” McLaughlin, collaborating on a tune as well.

Songs like title track, “Shining Like a Star” celebrate the myriad of ways that children express themselves and celebrate their uniqueness in the world. Often painting a story in her music, Laura sings about the wonders of nature in songs like “I’m a Tree” and “Vegetable Party”. Together with fun dance tunes like “Hula Hoop”, and “Rocket Ship”, these songs are part of an uplifting and inspiring new album for children and parents to enjoy together!

Before producing her own original children’s music, Laura co-produced Old Town School of Folk Music’s “Wiggleworms Love You,” CD (2005), and in the past 3 years has recorded educational songs for Disney English, a division of Walt Disney Company.

Laura found her place in the acoustic-folk world early on, picking up the guitar at age 16. Originally from Westchester, NY, she came to Chicago after college and soon joined the teaching staff of the Old Town School of Folk Music, where folk legends like Roger McGuinn of the Byrds honed his guitar style.

For over a decade, Laura was the Director of the Old Town School’s early-childhood Wiggleworms program. In 2009 she took a daring leap and decided to go full-time with kids’ music, showing an intense passion for creating sweet folk-inspired songs for children and families.

For more info, check out her website at www.lauradohertymusic.com

Here's ChiIL Mama's live footage of Laura Doherty performing her Be My Valentine song, from her Valentine's Day Schubas show.

2.  ChiIL Mama presents Human Tim + Robot Tim at Beat Kitchen's Concerts for Kids this Sunday at noon.

Check out ChiIL Mama's video interview with Human Tim right here, along with 2 songs from his live show at Schubas last February.

We'll have ChiIL Mama's video interview with Laura Doherty and more unseen live concert footage from both bands, up this week, and we'll be reviewing and giving away copies of Laura's new release soon!
