WHAT WE'RE PLAYING: Petz Beach Nintendo 3DS #TechReview #PetzBeach #Ad

  • Here at ChiIL Mama, the kids love to chill out and relax with video games. It was our pleasure to recently play and review the Petz Beach video game. We're familiar with the series and have enjoyed several of their past games, and we're not the only ones. Did you know Petz has sold over 23 MILLION units worldwide?!

  • With Petz Beach, they're back on Nintendo 3DS just in time for the holidays, and more interactive than ever. This game includes 50 different types of animals and a host of adventures that change with the seasons, for year round fun! The game also expands as you play, gives you the ability to connect with friends, and more.
  • Petz fans will embark on the ultimate adventure in Petz Beach, where players can care for a variety of dogs, complete quests to expand their village and connect with other Petz owners.

  • What We Dig:
  • The animals are adorable! This game will charm your littles with the cutest critters out there. My tween, who wants to be a veterinarian, was entranced, though she conceded younger kids would enjoy it more.
  • There's a lot of reading involved and following directions to care for your pets. So kids are learning and strengthening their vocabulary and skills while having fun.
  • This game is non violent, rated E for Everyone, and encourages nurturing.

  • This is our favorite point. Learning while on the journey. Through its partnership with Encyclopaedia Britannica, Petz Beach incorporates learning along the way. As kids care for their pets and complete missions, they’ll learn facts about animals, plants and insects!

  • My grandma worked for Encyclopaedia Britannica for years in Chicago and I think she would have been thrilled to see all the new innovations that go way beyond book sets.

    Not Crazy About:

    • This game does skew young in style and taste, but younger players who are not strong readers may be frustrated by all the text and skip over crucial directions.
    • The 3DS visuals are not recommended for kids under 7 years old and can actually cause vision damage! Now, the settings can be flipped to 2D on the unit for younger kids, but we worry a bit about kids switching it up on their own, and parents not monitoring it, since this is a game that appeals to the under 7 set.

    • Beyond dogs & cats:
      • Variety of animals and adventures—something for every kid. There are more than 50 different types of animals in the game from dogs and cats, to dolphins and whales. Because the environment in game changes with the seasons, the adventure lasts all year long!

      • The game expands as you play. As players explore the town and meet new neighbors with their pets, the game expands and grows. Helping new friends will expand the village as the game progresses.

    • You Might Also Like:
    • Petz Countryside (another Petz game that launches on the same day as Petz Beach) Kids and their virtual pets can enjoy the same fun experience in a different environment.

FOODIE TUESDAY: Four Fab CK Mondavi Wines For Your 4th And Beyond #CKMondaviHeroes #CleverGirls #Sponsored #recipe

Here at ChiIL Mama we love to chill out with a great bottle of white or red wine and CK Mondavi has long been one of our top picks for quality and affordability. Did you know CK Mondavi is THE perfect 4th of July wine. Not only is it the only wine in the under $10 price point that's 100% American made & grown, but a percentage of sales goes to supporting veterans!

With Independence day on the horizon and a long weekend of relaxing ahead, we're stocked up and ready for fun with four fine CK Mondavi wines. We're particularly jazzed to be one of the first to try Blonde Five, which will be available to the public in August.

Looking for a tasty pairing for your 4th of July grilling fun?

    Marc Mondavi’s Monster Burger

Crimp the edges well, grill to perfection and serve with my CK Mondavi Zinfandel.

Marc says: I find that if I’m going to enjoy a burger cooked on my grill, I want one that is chock full of flavor. I’ve found this recipe passes my test for a hearty, tasty burger.

    Serves Six
3 lbs. hamburger meat of your preference
    2 tsp. oregano
    1 medium sized onion chopped
    1 clove garlic chopped
½ lb. cheese of your choice
    1 egg beaten
    ½ cup bread crumbs
    Salt and pepper to taste
Mix all the ingredients together in a large bowl except the cheese. Take a little less than ¼ lb. of the mixture, roll it in your hand and flatten as you would a regular burger, but thinner. Place three to six cheese chunks in the center. Prepare the top of the burger the same way and place over the first burger.

Thanks to CK Mondavi for shipping us:
    - Chardonnay
    - Blonde Five
    - Cabernet Sauvignon
    - Scarlet Five

Here at ChiIL Mama, we're confirmed fans of red wines and CK Mondavi's Scarlet Five rocks with hints of black cherries and plums and the best attributes of FIVE reds:

CK Mondavi's Cab Sav is another long time fav of ours.

    Chose your favorite:
With these reds and whites you won't be blue!

    The new girl in town:

Blonde Five is delicious enough to turn heads from the red. I'm a former red head... blue/black haired for a year... and now back to natural blonde, so I'm partial to blonde.

This Blonde Five wine is smart and succulent with notes of pear, baked apple, honey, lemon, & honeysuckle! CK Mondavi's suggested pairings (grilled shrimp, spicy chicken and mild cheeses) are are all top picks of ours too. Yum!

    We dig the twist tops.
Here in Chi, IL we celebrate the 4th of July and summer in general with loads of free outdoor fireworks displays, free concerts in every genre imaginable and outdoor picnics. And CK Mondavi wine goes great with the great outdoors! Even if you're not so great about remembering the cork screw!

    HELP OUT:

Our readers love to make a difference and support worthwhile causes, so we frequently run local philanthropic opportunities under HELP LOCALLY and national and even international opportunities under HELP OUT.  We're happy to introduce you to

    • A percentage of each bottle sold between May - August is donated to Intrepid Fallen Heroes (up to $50,000).
    • Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund (IFHF), is an organization that supports the men and women of the Armed Forces and their families.
    • Funded entirely by public donations, IFHF serves U.S. military personnel wounded or killed in service to our nation and their families. For more information, visit www.fallenheroesfund.org.
We're all about honoring our vets. In fact, one of our oldest friends (literally) is Cliff, a Marine and a WWII veteran. We just celebrated his 93rd birthday last week, on June 26th, with an outdoor party. How do you celebrate your special milestones?

    Did you know:
        • CK Mondavi is run by the legendary Napa Valley wine icon, Peter Mondavi Sr., a World War II veteran.
        • Owner Marc Mondavi was born on the 4th of July and 2014 marks his 60th birthday.
Celebrate July 4th and beyond with CK Mondavi reds and whites so delicious and affordable, they'll banish the high priced wine blues!

A Tale of 3 Ninjas and The Traveling Blue Wig Project #FierceFund

Have a story of a time you were Fierce? Want to help Clever Girls Collective support women and girls to be Fierce? Visit www.clevergirlscollective.com/fiercefund to learn more about this girl-power project!

    Chicago, 1994.

It was that weird prickling sensation on the back of her neck that gave her the first inclination that she was being stalked.  There was a concert at The Aragon Ballroom, taking up street parking, so she'd had to park a few blocks from home.   Her boyfriend of 2 years was out with friends and the relationship was unraveling anyway, so she was alone.

Her apartment was in sight, as she glanced over her shoulder and saw a guy in a black hoodie, like a ninja mask, rounding the corner behind her... then another... and a third.   Senses on high alert, she walked faster and got the key in the gate of the wrought iron fence when she felt a hand on her shoulder.

    "Give me your money, man."

Time clicked into super slow motion and she felt anger overriding fear.

"I don't have any money!" She yelled, as loud as possible, hoping someone would hear.

The 3 surrounded her and pulled out a curved, serrated hunting knife about 10" long.  When they made a move, she countered and kicked out at them.   Then she grabbed her key chain pepper spray and saw the individual droplets spray out at her attackers in freeze frame.   The knife flicked out and sliced her across the right wrist and she dropped the mace.

As she kicked and dodged, she lost her footing and fell to one knee on the sidewalk.  She looked up to see the knife wielding ninja plunge the blade toward her face.   She blocked with her arm, and he sliced across her left knuckle, and stabbed her deep in the forearm.

An oncoming car broke up the party, and oblivious, kept driving down the block, but the attackers scattered and it gave her the few seconds she needed to grab her keys, and get in the gate.   With blood hemorrhaging all over, she couldn't even tell where she was cut or how badly.   She ran up the stairs, leaving a trail of crimson in her wake, and called 911.   They never caught the guys.

**If this story played out in the panels of a comic book, movie or tv show, I might find it suspenseful or even entertaining.   But it actually happened to me and it was pretty horrific.**

The physical cuts eventually healed, though it was months before the nightmares stopped.   I woke frequently and replayed the attack endlessly through my mind with a zillion what ifs.   What if I had come home 10 minutes earlier or later.   What if the car hadn't picked my side street and they'd slit my throat.   What if...

I moved to a new neighborhood and started to put my life back together.   I was a bit angry with myself for feeling so freaked out during the aftermath, but at first it was a supreme effort to leave the house, let alone go out after dark.   At the time, a neighbor woman who happened to be a cop gave me some great advice.   She said "Be patient with yourself.   It takes time to get over something like this.  You can't rush healing."   It took a good year before I stopped anxiously looking over my shoulder, and felt normal walking alone at night again, but I took her advice and stopped beating myself up over my justifiable PTSD.

You really never know what you'll be like in a life or death situation till you're there.   And I was fierce.   I'd always been an activist and advocate for women's safety, but now I know what it feels like to be attacked and to fight back.

Today I donate to shelters and advocate for self defense training, safer streets, and laws protecting women.   I have a 10 year old daughter now, and I make sure she knows women can be mighty, and smart about safety, and that we all need to look out for each other.    I still live in Chi, IL and confidently walk the city streets by day and night.  I don't live my life from a place of fear, but from a place of empowerment.

    Bonnie Kenaz-Mara (AKA: ChiIL Mama)

I'm elated that Clever Girls Collective chose me, as 1 of 50, to share my story.   The knife attack was something that changed me fundamentally and not something most of my friends or family knew about me, to this day.   The Traveling Blue Wig Project is crazy cool and I'm excited to be a part of this collection of stories.

There are women in my circle of friends right now who are undergoing surgery for thyroid and breast cancer.   3 of my friends, who have young children, lost their homes this year through bank foreclosures.  Several more miscarried, had a stillborn child and lost a young son.   I'm overwhelmed by the every day courage of these women, and how they endure the unthinkable and keep on going.

Fierce can mean lots of things to different people, and we want to hear your stories of strength, bravery, and general kick-butt-ness.

We all have our moments of being Fierce, and The Clever Girls Collective is collecting your inspiring stories. Fifty members of the Clever Girls Collective will be receiving blue wigs and sharing their stories of “Being Fierce” in blog posts. In the meantime, please feel free to share your moments of Fierceness in the comments below.

Encouraging Women & Girls To Be Fierce

Every woman has a story of strength. To recognize and celebrate these stories, and to ensure women and girls are always empowered to be Fierce, Clever Girls Collective is proud to announce The Fierce Fund, a corporate advised fund of Silicon Valley Community Foundation.
      • In 2013, The Fierce Fund will donate $20,000 in support of nonprofit initiatives that celebrate, encourage, and elevate women and girls. Read more below and vote for your favorite cause!
    Why The Fierce Fund?
      • Our internal mantra is “Innovate. Elevate. Be Fierce.” Since our inception in 2009, Clever Girls has focused on two things: encouraging women to tell their stories, and helping women gain recognition and monetization for doing so.
      • In October 2012, Clever Girls Co-Founder Sheila Bernus Dowd, was diagnosed with Stage 2 breast cancer. She underwent surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation, and today is in full remission. Throughout her treatments, she continued to work at CGC, ran the annual fundraiser at her children’s school…and found a new affinity for hats and fake hair. (See below about our Traveling Blue Wig Project!)
      • Having one of our own go through this difficult experience sharpened Clever Girls’ focus on helping women when we most need support.

How To Be Fierce Part One: Vote For #FierceFund Nominees
      • The following fabulous, Fierce 501(c)(3) organizations were selected by the Clever Girls staff, and each of them supports women and girls in very important ways. Please vote for the organization that you believe should be the recipient of this year’s $20,000 #FierceFund:

      • Dress for Success San Francisco’s mission is to promote the economic independence of disadvantaged women by providing professional attire, a network of support and career development tools to help women thrive in work and in life.

      • Girls Who Code works to educate, inspire, and equip young women with the skills and resources to pursue academic and career opportunities in computing fields.

How To Be Fierce Part Two: Follow & Join Our “Traveling Blue Wig” Project!
      • Our stories of strength take many forms.
      • Being Fierce is having the courage to try a new career, drive across the country, travel somewhere you’ve never been; standing up to a bully, calling out hate speech, voting; being strong for your kids, being there for your friends, being active in your community. Being Fierce can mean going back to school after a couple decades away, it could mean putting on a bathing suit at the public beach. Or being Fierce could mean going through cancer treatments and choosing to rock a blue wig in stride.

ChiIL Out With Wyndham Vacation Rentals & National Vacation Rental Month--July #travel #vacations #AD

ChiIL Travel Kids ride in style!

Did you know July is National Vacation Rental Month?   Here at ChiIL Mama and ChiIL Travel Kidswe love to travel!   This summer we've already hit the Indiana Dunes, Michigan and Wisconsin, and we make the most of sweet home Chicago as well.   In a few weeks we'll be road tripping to see relatives in Cincinnati and then we'll be shooting a travel feature in Vail, Colorado!

The only thing we dig more than travel is saving money on vacation so we can put it toward our next travel fund!  So, we were stoked when Wyndham Vacation Rentals asked us to partner up for a sponsored post.   They've got the scoop on how to save money and stay in style.

*ChiIL Travel Tips:   We've chosen to raise savvy, urban kids in the heart of Chicago.   So we make it a point to vacation where the trees are taller than the buildings, and get them out into nature, oceans and mountains.   If you're from a small town, venture into the city.   If you live in the urban jungle, hit the wilderness.   Variety is key.   For a true vacation, change your scene.

Staying in a vacation rental offers more space and many of the conveniences of home such as fully-equipped kitchens, washer/dryers units and multiple bedrooms.

*ChiIL Travel Tips:   We like to save $$ stocking up on breakfast goodies,  beverages and snacks.   Then we spend the extra savings on nice dinners out and fun activities.  Full kitchens rock!

For peace of mind, book with a professionally managed vacation rental provider such as Wyndham Vacation Rentals® that has a "Vacation Rental Bill of Rights®" service pledge ensuring quality standards (vetted rentals with accurate images), comprehensive customer service and real-time payment and bookings.

*ChiIL Travel Tips:   Just like internet dating... that hot model in the photo may be too good to be true on the DIY rental listings.   Go with a pro and know what you're getting.   Vacation time is too short and sweet to waste in a musty, moldy, misrepresented place!

**Wyndham Vacation Rentals is offering summer deals at up to 35 percent off nightly rates on bookings made throughout July at www.WyndhamVacationRentals.com **

*ChiIL Travel Tips:   We save our change in a big coin jar marked vacation fun funds and it adds up!   Of course we're not opposed to a little help from our friends, like Wyndham Vacation Rentals' smokin' 35% off, to save even more.

In the U.S., Wyndham Vacation Rentals' properties range from private homes, resorts condos and villas in beach destinations such as Florida, South Carolina, Delaware and Alabama's Gulf Coast to mountain-side condos and luxury cabins in Colorado, Utah, Tennessee and Idaho.

*ChiIL Travel Tips:   Highways are sweet for speed, but true adventures lie off the beaten path.   We love the roads less traveled and try to pick local mom n pop restaurants instead of chains.   If you're a tourist in town, look for where the cops stop and eat.   They know the good diners!

With Wyndham Vacation Rentals, travelers may enjoy the best of both worlds - the space and comfort of home with the conveniences and amenities of a hotel stay including housekeeping, Wi-Fi, shuttle services and a concierge desk.

*ChiIL Travel Tips:   It's tough to fit a family of 4 in one hotel room.   This past weekend we did that and no one got much sleep, the sibs thrashed around all night, and one kid ultimately ended up being shoved out of bed and spending the night on the floor.  True tale!   We could have had private rooms, peace, and space through Wyndham Vacation Rentals.

Charleston, SC is on our travel wish list.  Check out this sweet Charleston shot from Wyndham Vacation Rentals®.  South Carolina is close enough to Chicago for a road trip, far warmer in the fall & winter, and full of southern charm.

Of course, we'd be content as conch shells in this gorgeous Emerald Coast, Florida rental too!   Photo by Wyndham Vacation Rentals®.

Make the most of National Vacation Rental Month--July, save some cash, and get out and make some memories!

    Wipe N Roll Lifestyle-It's a Noun....It's A Verb...It's Cottonelle #CleverCottonelle

We travel to big music festivals all summer, and there's nothing better than a little wipe n roll to go with a little rock n roll.   Wipes are the best at a fest, when the rolls are running out, or to wipe your hands throughout the day.   Our kids are 9 & 11, so we make sure they've got the two step wipe n roll handy, to clear off the public seats, and keep themselves fresh n clean.   Wipe n roll....it's a verb...it's a noun, action and satisfaction.   For a soft wipe n roll Cottonelle rocks!

We also adore camping out and always make sure we have rolls of TP AND wipes on hand.   Guess you could say we live a wipe n roll lifestyle!

Nothing leaves you feeling fresher and cleaner than using Cottonelle Ultra Comfort Care and Cottonelle Fresh Care Wipes*. But this two-step, “enhanced clean routine” doesn’t really have a name. So Cottonelle®wants your help: What will you name it?

    * Vs. comparable leading national brand products

Check out the Cottonelle® “Name It” app and make up your own unique name or spin the name generator: https://www.facebook.com/cottonelle/app_136123306510733
