BLAST FROM THE PAST: Several years back, before a revival of Death & Harry Houdini, we had the great pleasure of interviewing Dennis Watkins in his lovely home filled with show posters and retro magic tricks from his grandfather's stash. Check out our original video interview right here:

The production previously ran to great acclaim and sold out houses in Chicago and Miami from January through August 2012 and again in the summer of 2013, The House is thrilled to bring back this dynamic and magic-filled production.

“Magic of the very highest order!,”
declared Chris Jones of the Chicago Tribune.

“Soar[ing] on Dennis Watkins’ brilliance as a genuine magician” and “ingeniously written and directed by Nathan Allen,” (Hedy Weiss, Chicago Sun-Times), Death & Harry Houdini leads viewers through the events of history’s most famous magician’s life told with “high energy and lack of artifice in a loose, buzzy blend of traditional storytelling, music and spectacle,” (Kris Vire, Time Out Chicago).

The House Theatre of Chicago is proud to announce the return of the first play to ever grace its stage, the magic-filled thrill show and crowd favorite Death & Harry Houdini, written and directed by The House Theatre of Chicago Artistic Director Nathan Allen and starring Company Member and professional magician Dennis Watkins as Harry Houdini. Filled with stunning magic, poignant dialogue and original music, Death & Harry Houdini presents the story of history’s most famous magician and his life-long war against Death.

Pictured: Dennis Watkins as Harry Houdini (left) and Shawn Pfautsch as Theo (Right) with Ensemble (LtoR, Top Row) Trista Smith, Carolyn Defrin, Tommy Rapley, (LtoR bottom row) Marika Mashburn and Abu Ansari.

Beginning with the untimely passing of Harry’s father, the show travels through his first tent shows with his younger brother Theo, meeting his wife Bess and the beginning of his journey towards fame on the Vaudeville circuit. All the while, Harry feels Death close on his heels and he won’t rest until he’s conquered him once and for all. Harry will walk on broken glass, swallow razor blades and risk his life in the Water Torture Cell, but will he pull off an escape from Death? Marvel with fellow audience members as Houdini battles Death once more.

Returning to the cast and joining Dennis Watkins as Harry Houdini are House Company Members Carolyn Defrin (Bess), Shawn Pfaustch (Theo), Tommy Rapley (Death), Marika Mashburn (Cecilia), and Johnny Arena (Ringmaster). Guest artists Rashad Hall and Julia Merchant join the ensemble.
The Design Team includes House Company members: Nathan Allen (director/playwright), Collette Pollard (scenic designer), Lee Keenan (costume design), Ben Wilhelm (light designer), Kevin O’Donnell (sound designer/composer) and Brian DesGranges (stage management), with guest artist Harrison Adams (co-sound design).

Dennis Watkins Video Interview-Death and Harry Houdini Closing #video interview

Dennis Watkins on the art of being Harry Houdini

The House Theatre's smash hit, Death and Harry Houdini, reaches the end of it's final extension today.   This is, without a doubt, one of our favorite shows of the year.

We published this interview with the show's lead, Dennis Watkins, back in the spring on Facebook and Twitter, but want it to live on in a searchable archive form, so we're breaking it back out at both ChiIL Live Shows.com and ChiIL Mama.com to celebrate the show's close.

It was our great pleasure to be invited to Dennis' lovely northside home.   His passion for magic extends from the stage to his after hours, where he surrounds himself with vintage magic props that have been in the family, collector posters of renowned magicians, and even a Houdini coffee table volume.    Check out "the magician's lair" here.

We got a rare peek into the home of magic man, Dennis Watkins, star of Death and Harry Houdini, The House Theatre's smash, sell out hit. His love of magic goes beyond his roles in Magic Parlour and Death and Harry Houdini. He's a 3rd generation magician whose home decor includes vintage tricks from his Grandfather's shop and sweet magic show posters, for his own endeavors and others. A big show banner from The House Theatre's first incarnation of Death and Harry Houdini 10 years ago, hangs just inside his front door.

In our interview, Dennis expounds on the history of the show, Death and Harry Houdini, and it's numerous reincarnations with The House Theatre since 2001.   He gives insight into how to prep for the physically and mentally challenging role and how being successful at illusion isn't about ego and mastering trick, but it's all about the magic and wonder going on in the audience's heads.

My husband and I caught Death and Harry Houdini opening night and loved it so much I spent months trying to buy tickets to take the kids back to see it.    The run originally sold out in minutes, and although I was stalking their Facebook page, every time a trickle of tickets became available, they got scooped up before I could get my finger on the button.

We finally scored a block of tickets and my kids were able to see the show for my son's March birthday, with one of his best friends.   As I'd expected, the kids were enamored with the show and amazed with the acting and the illusions.    We all sincerely hope that this is not the last we've seen of Harry Houdini, skillfully brought back to life by Chi-town's own magician extraordinaire, Dennis Watkins!

“A highly polished and visually thrilling show…
MAGIC OF THE VERY HIGHESTORDER!”

- Chris Jones, Chicago Tribune

“…high energy, buzzy blend of traditional storytelling, music and spectacle…
THRILLING RIDE!”

– Kris Vire, Time Out Chicago

“Soars on Dennis Watkins’ brilliance as a genuine magician and fearless stuntman…
INGENIOUSLY WRITTEN AND DIRECTED!”

– Hedy Weiss, Chicago Sun-Times

We've seen numerous productions by The House Theatre over the years and they do not disappoint.   We highly recommend you check out their 11th season.

"A sophisticated night-cap. You’ll be mightily impressed! "

“A perfect evening of illusion and laughter… The Magic Parlour transformed a roomful of tired adults into wide-eyed, wide awake innocents. And that in itself is Watkins’ most impressive trick.

“This late-night magic show is exactly what it should be: funny, lively, intimate, and utterly baffling.”

“This was perfect. Perfect venue, perfect magician. I just can’t possibly comprehend how he does some of these things. See this.”

“It’s a mind-blowing, parlour-style magic show. This isn’t kiddie birthday party magic — it’s a little more sinister, darker. MUST SEE.”

“This is a magic show that leaves you speechless.”

Dennis Watkins can still be seen performing
The Magic Parlour every Friday night at The Palmer House.

Act Out: Death and Harry Houdini Extended & 4 Free Tixs to The Houdini Box (photo filled feature)

Here are ChiIL Mama's original photos from opening night at The Houdini Box.   The kids were elated to meet author/illustrator Brian Selznick, since they adore his books, The Houdini Box play and the movie, Hugo.   He signed a copy of all of his books for them!   Double click the slideshow for easy sharing options and more at SmugMug.

Win Free Tickets to The Houdini Box at Chicago Children's Theatre Sat 2-18!   We've given away 4, but we've conjured up 4 more....tickets that is.   Enter at the bottom of this post for your chance to win.

It's a magical month in Chi-Town with both Houdini Box at Chicago Children's Theatre and Death and Harry Houdini at The House Theatre.  Houdini, who died Halloween night in 1927,vowed to attempt to return from beyond the grave.   This February, he's doing a pretty spectacular job of it, as his spirit lives on in 2 creative collaborations.

In a magical synchronicity, worthy of the great master of illusion himself, Chi-Town can get completely immersed in Houdini this winter!   Houdini Box is great for all ages and vividly and expertly brings to life Selznick's tale of a young boy's meeting with the great Houdini.   The show mixes live action, puppetry, and an amazing original score by Chicago's own maestro of magical mayhem, Mark "Mucca Pazza" Messing.   Check out our original video interview with Mark (coming this week), who also just had free reign on the score for Theatre Oobleck's highly acclaimed Hunchback Variations Opera, also now playing.

**Both Houdini shows even share a trickster in production staff, who worked out illusions for both!  Check out our video interview, when we post it, and/or check out The House and Chicago Children's Theatre's sites, and if you correctly list his name, it's worth 4 entries!

The House Theatre show, Death and Harry Houdini, at The Chopin, is self rated PG13, although after seeing opening night we plan to bring our 8 & 10 year olds back.   There are some intense gas mask wearing, grim reaper scenes and death defying escape arts, but nothing too over the top for tweens and teens, unless you have a very sensitive child.   This heart pounding remount of House Theatre's innagural show kicks it up a notch by giving Dennis Watkins propensity for truly stunning trickery, a historical context, setting, costuming, characterization and plot.   We adore the theatre genre that couches circus arts within a theatrical storyline.   Cirque du Soleil does that so well, as do our local gems, The House Theatre, Lookingglass Theatre, Aloft, 500 Clown, TMLMTBGB and Actor's Gymnasium, among others.   This timely remount celebrates a decade in the life of The House Theatre in grand fashion.   This one's not to be missed!

*ChiIL Mama has original video interviews with 4 Houdini Box creatives, including Brian Selznick, Oscar nominated author of Hugo Cabret & Houdini Box, the director, the lyricist and the composer.   We'll be posting all of those, along with our full reviews this week!

Directed by Blair Thomas. Book and Lyrics by Hannah Kohl, Music by Mark Messing. Based on the book THE HOUDINI BOX written and illustrated by Brian Selznick, and published by Atheneum Books for Young Readers

So check back in and ChiIL out with ChiIL Mama.   Spread the word and enter like we vote in Chi, IL...early and often.
