RETURNING: Beautiful: The Carole King Musical at Cadillac Palace Theatre 12/5/17-1/28/18

ChiIL Live Shows On Our Radar:

Beautiful: The Carole King Musical
Broadway In Chicago at the
Cadillac Palace Theatre

**Recommended for ages 11+**

ChiIL Mama will be ChiILin' at Chi, IL's iconic Cadillac Palace Theatre December 6th for the press opening of Beautiful: The Carole King Musical. Check back soon for our full review. We caught this stirring musical that lives up to it's name and namesake on it's last pass through Chicago and can't wait to catch it again. Of course the songs are fabulous and Carole King's tale has all the best elements of classic Broadway musical struggle and success stories.

Long before she was Carole King, chart-topping music legend, she was Carol Klein, Brooklyn girl with passion and chutzpah. She fought her way into the record business as a teenager and, by the time she reached her twenties, had the husband of her dreams and a flourishing career writing hits for the biggest acts in rock ‘n’ roll. But it wasn’t until her personal life began to crack that she finally managed to find her true voice. Beautiful tells the inspiring true story of King’s remarkable rise to stardom, from being part of a hit songwriting team with her husband Gerry Goffin, to her relationship with fellow writers and best friends Cynthia Weil and Barry Mann, to becoming one of the most successful solo acts in popular music history. Along the way, she made more than beautiful music, she wrote the soundtrack to a generation.

“Carole King might be a native New Yorker, but her story of struggle and triumph is as universal as they come – and her music is loved the world over,” producer Paul Blake said. “We know that audiences throughout the country will embrace this show just as Broadway and London audiences have.”

ABOUT NEWSIES
NEWSIES, the new American musical, features a Tony® Award-winning score with music by eight-time Academy Award® winner Alan Menken and lyrics by Jack Feldman, a book by four-time Tony® Award winner Harvey Fierstein and is produced by Disney Theatrical Productions, NEWSIES is directed by Tony® nominee Jeff Calhoun and choreographed by Christopher Gattelli, who won a 2012 Tony Award® for his work.  The entire creative team has reunited to bring the break-out smash musical to audiences across North America.

When it opened on March 29, 2012, NEWSIES was intended for a Broadway run of just 101 performances.  The show’s fiercely devoted fans had other ideas, however; they propelled the show to a run of 1005 performances, attendance of more than 1 million and a gross of over $100M.

While on Broadway, NEWSIES set and broke seven Nederlander Theatre house records and became the highest-grossing show from the 2011-12 Broadway season. The show received 23 major theatrical nominations – including eight Tony Award® nods – and won Tony®, Drama Desk and Outer Critics Circle Awards for Score and Choreography.

Set in New York City at the turn of the century, NEWSIES is the rousing tale of Jack Kelly, a charismatic newsboy and leader of a ragged band of teenaged ‘newsies,’ who dreams only of a better life far from the hardship of the streets. But when publishing titans Joseph Pulitzer and William Randolph Hearst raise distribution prices at the newsboys’ expense, Jack finds a cause to fight for and rallies newsies from across the city to strike for what’s right.

NEWSIES is inspired by the real-life ‘Newsboy Strike of 1899,’ when newsboy Kid Blink led a band of orphan and runaway newsies on a two-week-long action against Pulitzer, Hearst and other powerful newspaper publishers.

The stage version introduces seven brand-new songs by the original team of Menken and Feldman, including a song written specifically for the tour called ‘Letter from the Refuge,’ while keeping many of the beloved songs from the film, including ‘Carrying the Banner, ‘Seize the Day,’ ‘King of New York’ and ‘Santa Fe.’

Since the film’s 1992 theatrical release and subsequent DVD release, NEWSIES has grown into a cult phenomenon, and for years had been the single most requested title of all the Disney musical films not yet adapted for the stage.  (The film featured a screenplay by Bob Tzudiker & Noni White (Tarzan, 102 Dalmatians).)

Huge News. The Best Broadway Show I'd Never Take My Kids Or Parents To Is Coming Back!

THE BOOK OF MORMON is manna from some warped ‘South Park’ heaven!
Laughs flow like Mormon wagon trains rolling West.  Be not afraid, suburban pilgrim.
These Mormons are so lovable, you feel half-inclined to take a couple of ‘em
home with you. MORMON is hilarious.”
Chris Jones, CHICAGO TRIBUNE

RETURNS TO CHICAGO
LIMITED ENGAGEMENT BEGINS FEBRUARY 24, 2015

Here at ChiIL Live Shows, I caught opening night of the show's amazing 43 week run in Chicago (with a few guys named Matt Stone & Trey Parker in the audience) and I LOVED it! If you procrastinated and thought it would be around forever and then missed it, here's your chance.  Or maybe you went and just can't get enough... Don't delay. Tickets are sure to sell FAST.  The Book of Mormon is hands down THE Best Broadway Show I'd never take my kids or parents to!

This show is an absolute hoot. I'd expected irreverent, but I wasn't prepared for just how RELEVANT this show is, too. It's spot on! We love the highly effective and entertaining church of the pop cultural parables.  We dare you to see it and not get "Spooky Mormon Hell Dream" and "Switch it Off Like a Light switch" stuck in your brains.  They'll seep permanently into your repertoire, and pop up at odd life moments.  Truly a must see unless you are easily offended, devoutly Mormon or very young.

Group Tickets Now On Sale

Following its record-breaking 43-week engagement in the 13-14 season, THE BOOK OF MORMON will return to Chicago’s Bank of America Theatre in 2015 for a strictly limited engagement from February 24, 2015 – May 17, 2015.

Tickets are on sale now for groups of 15 or more by calling Broadway In Chicago Group Sales at (312) 977-1710.  Single ticket information will be announced at a later date.

THE BOOK OF MORMON features book, music and lyrics by Trey Parker, Robert Lopez and Matt Stone. Parker and Stone are the four-time Emmy Award-winning creators of the landmark animated series, “South Park.” Tony Award-winner Lopez is co-creator of the long-running hit musical comedy, Avenue Q.  The musical is choreographed by Tony Award-winner Casey Nicholaw (Monty Python’s Spamalot, The Drowsy Chaperone) and is directed by Nicholaw and Parker.

THE BOOK OF MORMON is the winner of nine Tony Awards, including Best Musical, Best Score (Trey Parker, Robert Lopez, Matt Stone), Best Book (Trey Parker, Robert Lopez, Matt Stone), Best Direction (Casey Nicholaw, Trey Parker), Best Featured Actress (Nikki M. James), Best Scenic Design (Scott Pask), Best Lighting Design (Brian MacDevitt), Best Sound Design (Brian Ronan) and Best Orchestrations (Larry Hochman, Stephen Oremus); the New York Drama Critics Circle Award for Best Musical; five Drama Desk Awards including Best Musical, the 2011 Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album; four Outer Critics Circle Awards, including Best Musical, and the Drama League Award for Best Musical.
