OPENING: Redmoon Theatre's Devil's Cabaret The Next 3 Fridays (21+) #ChiILPicksList

Chi, IL LIVE Shows On Our Radar:

This one's for the big kids AKA: adults (21+). Opening night is SOLD OUT already so stop slacking and buy your tickets before it's too late! This is going to be EPIC. ChiIL Live Shows will be there... will YOU?!

$25! 7 DEADLY SINS! LAGUNITAS!
ONLY 24 HOURS UNTIL THE SINNING BEGINS!

ONLY $25 (21+)
redmoon.org  2120 S Jefferson, Chicago

Also: Rumor has it, there's going to be a gay friendly Redmoon "Take Over" Via The Welcoming Committee on April 10th. It's still an open to the public (of all persuasions) show, but you can get your "take over" tickets here and rock a wrist band to find your pack!

When TWC learned of Red Moon Theater, the 57,000 square-foot warehouse that puts on spectacle performances designed to “engineer wonder” and “promote community and creativity” … we were intrigued. When we found out they regularly bring 1,000 people to these performance events but the LGBT community was missing … we knew we had to take it over.

Experience thrilling spectacle performances celebrating the Devil’s “greatest accomplishments” - The Seven Deadly Sins - while enjoying unlimited tastes from Lagunitas' craft beer bar. A 30’ tall crane tower equipped with multiple stages will be the centerpiece within Redmoon’s massive warehouse and will feature an eclectic mix of performances by aerialists, drummers, a rock-n-roll band, DJ, video wall, unique puppets, and “a special appearance by God.”
Ready to indulge your Lust and Gluttony while celebrating Pride? It’s time to unearth all our red satin and Hot Topic getup that hasn’t seen the sun since ever, because we’re descending into a hellmouth of burlesque. Red Moon’s The Devil's Cabaret is April 10, and we’re taking over each flaming circle.

How do you find TWC in the crowd? First, meet us at the pre-party so you know exactly who you're attending with. But once you check in at Redmoon you’ll be handed a bright green wristband so that you can seek out other TWC members in the crowd that night. Redmoon can hold as many as 1,000 people and often sells out their events, but with our pre-party and wristbands you’ll find your new BFFs in no time.

ABOUT CHICAGO VENETIAN NIGHT
A longtime favorite festival in Chicago that started in 1958, Venetian Night makes an exciting return to Navy Pier on Saturday, September 6.  Gather at Navy Pier’s East End for one of the best areas to watch these illuminated boats decorated in the theme of your favorite Broadway musicals including WickedAnnieChicagoGrease and The Phantom of the Opera, take to the water in a stunning aquatic parade, set to music. A spectacular Navy Pier fireworks display marks the conclusion of the parade. Judges will award prizes for first, second and third place winners, scoring them in these categories: adherence to the overall theme; originality; and lighting and sound.

DEE SNIDER’S ROCK & ROLL CHRISTMAS TALE tells the story of Däisy Cütter, a heavy metal bar band looking to make it big even though the 80s are LONG over.  This year, these four guys are ready to take the ultimate step and, in mythic rock tradition, sell their souls to the devil in exchange for success beyond their wildest metal dreams!  But every time they try to seal the infernal pact, their head-banging anthems turn into warm-hearted carols.  Soon these rockers are forced to realize their dreams of stardom are no match for the Christmas spirit.

Dee Snider, infamous lead singer of Twisted Sister, has created a VERY funny, VERY rocking and (sshhh!) VERY sweet new holiday musical, guaranteed to rock your whole family’s holiday and twist your Christmas.

DEE SNIDER’S ROCK & ROLL CHRISTMAS TALE will play the Broadway Playhouse at Water Tower Place (175 E Chestnut) Nov. 4, 2014 through Jan. 4, 2015.  For tickets, visit BroadwayInChicago.com.

WIN 4 Tickets to SEUSSICAL the Musical (2 winners!) at Chicago Shakespeare Theatre #giveaway #ChiILPicksList

THE SEUSSICAL MUSICAL'S WUBULOUS FUN. I'VE SEEN IT TWICE WITH MY
DAUGHTER AND SON.

NOW CST Courtyard's the site of the show, showing colorful creatures and places you'll go! For Seuss has amused and influenced us all, and this musical rocks for the large and the small. ChiIL Mama is silly with SEUSSICAL musings and 2 times a FREE family 4-pack for choosing!!

Disclosure:  Thanks to our friends at Chicago Shakespeare Theatre for providing the tickets for our giveaway and providing review tickets to my family. Thanks for enriching our lives with such stellar productions.  As always, all opinions are our own.

ENTER HERE for your chance to WIN 4 tickets (up to $112 value) to any Seussical performance through the end of July. Two winners chosen!
Enter through midnight 7/15. Good for any show through July 31st that is not sold out. **Please Note: This 75-minute production of Seussical is best enjoyed by ages 5 and up.

We truly have seen different productions of this musical two times over the years, but we're super stoked to check out Chicago Shakespeare Theatre's take on this colorful classic and we'll be there this weekend to review on the 12th. All of us grew up with Dr. Seuss and have read his fabulously funny and insightful books to our own children. He's still a top favorite of mine! And Chicago Shakespeare Theatre is a top favorite of ours, too, for consistently creative, professional offerings.

Back in the day, I read somewhere that Dr. Seuss's high school art teacher told him his drawing skills sucked and he should just give it up. Fortunately he didn't listen, but when he started shopping around his stories his first book was rejected by 27 publishers. He was ready to burn the manuscript when someone took a chance on it. Once he finally caught a break, he went on to sell over 600 MILLION books, publish 44 kids' books, and become a beloved author who changed the language of the world! I find that hugely inspiring when I feel like giving up on something.

Chicago Shakespeare Theater Presents

A whimsical adventure through the world of
Dr. Seuss
July 5–August 17, 2014

Chicago Shakespeare Theater (CST) brings the humor and magic of Dr. Seuss to life onstage this summer for young audiences and their families in the Broadway musical comedy Seussical. Playful, energetic and full of whimsy, Seussical engages the imagination with clever lyrics and melodies, unforgettable characters and the colorful world of Dr. Seuss.

Seussical is written by the Tony Award®-winning team of Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty, whose works include Ragtime, Once on This Island and the current Broadway production of Rocky,The Musical. Eric Idle of Monty Python and Spamalot fame co-conceived the musical.

This 75-minute production of Seussical is best enjoyed by ages 5 and up and will be performed July 5–August 17 in CST's Courtyard Theater. Tickets are $18–$28 with special discounts available for groups of 10 or more. All patrons receive a 40% parking discount at Navy Pier garages. For more information or to purchase tickets, contact Chicago Shakespeare Theater’s Box Office at 312.595.5600 or visit the Theater’s website at www.chicagoshakes.com.

Based on the stories created by children's author Theodor Seuss Geisel (a.k.a. Dr. Seuss) and narrated by his best-known character, The Cat in the Hat, Seussical seamlessly intertwines the characters, stories and themes from fourteen cherished Dr. Seuss classics, including Horton Hears a Who!The One Feather Tail of Miss Gertrude McFuzz, and Oh, the Thinks You Can Think!.

This year marks the 110th birthday of the beloved author, whose work has won Academy Awards®, a Peabody Award and a Pulitzer Prize, and has been translated into more than 20 languages to be enjoyed by children worldwide!

Directed by Scott Weinstein with musical direction by Michael Mahler, Seussical will be performed July 5 through August 17 in CST's Courtyard Theater. Every performance features special opportunities for audiences to interact with the actors for one-on-one conversations and photo opportunities.

As the thoughtful and observant Horton the Elephant, George Andrew Wolff returns to CST after appearing in previous summer family musicals includingThe Emperor's New Clothes and Willy Wonka. Lillian Castillo makes her CST debut as loveable one-feathered Gertrude McFuzz. Additional casting includes: Emily Chang, Lisa Estridge, Cory Goodrich, Aaron Holland, Ericka Mac, Liam Quealy, Joseph Sammour, Allison Sill and Krystal Worrell.

Director Scott Weinstein notably contributed to the early development of the musical comedy Murder for Two, and joined the creative team for its World Premiere at Chicago Shakespeare in 2011. Murder for Two has since gone on to a wildly successful Off-Broadway run, garnering Drama Desk and Drama League Award nominations among others. Weinstein is the associate director for the Chicago, Las Vegas and National Tour productions of the long-running hit Million Dollar Quartet. In addition to working with CST Artistic Director Barbara Gaines on David Ives' The School for Lies, Weinstein directed Fairy Tales, a theatrical concert CST presented in collaboration with The Chicago Chamber Musicians. Jeff Award-winning Music Director Michael Mahler comes to Seussical following a turn as the musical director for CST's production of the Sondheim and Weidman musical Road Show, directed by Associate Artistic Director Gary Griffin. Mahler was recently tapped by producer Cameron Mackintosh to pen additional updated lyrics for the highly anticipated West End revival of Miss Saigon. Mahler's additional CST credits include the music direction for last summer's Shrek The Musical and the original book and score for the family musical How Can You Run with a Shell on Your Back?, which was written with Alan Schmuckler and premiered at CST in 2007.

Joining the artistic team is Tommy Rapley as the production's Choreographer. Scott Davis is Scenic Designer, returning to Chicago Shakespeare after designing Road Show, Shrek The Musical and Othello: The Remix. Costume Designer Theresa Ham returns to CST after creating the imaginative costumes for Shrek The Musical and Beauty and the Beast. Jeff Award-winner Jesse Klug, whose previous work at CST includes Cyrano de Bergerac and Othello: The Remix, serves as Lighting Designer. CST Sound Master James Savage is Seussical's Sound Designer; among his nearly forty productions at CST, recent designs include Othello: The Remix and Murder for Two. CST's resident Jeff Award-winning Wig and Make-up Designer Melissa Veal, who has designed over seventy-five productions at Chicago Shakespeare, completes the creative team.
Chicago Shakespeare Theater's CST Family Series presents a wide range of affordable programming especially for families. Offerings year-round include Short Shakespeare! abridgments of Shakespeare plays, classical music concerts with Chicago Chamber Musicians and Chicago Shakespeare in the Parks, which produces free Shakespeare performances in neighborhood parks throughout the city. Lolla & Kidza Lineups and More #ChiILPicksList

Lollapalooza 2014 sold out in record time. Didja get your tickets?!  We have mixed feelings about this year's lineup. For the first time in it's history, Lolla dropped the ball on the big retro acts it's renowned for, disillusioning all the 30+ fans out there. They've also expanded the EMD/dub/house/electronica offerings. In past years Lolla has done a great job embracing the new, while bringing a healthy dose of major alt acts from the 80's and 90's. But that's come to a screeching halt with 2014.

Our friend's son, Trevor, who is a high school freshman summed it up best at a recent party. He said, "It's funny. All the kids at school were saying did you SEE the LINEUP at Lolla this year?! And they're all excited about it. And my mom and her friends are all  "Did you see the lineup at Lolla this year. Meh... " Yeah. That. It'll be a younger crowd for sure this time around with Eminem, Outkast, Kings of Leon, Arctic Monkeys, Skrillex and Calvin Harris headlining.  Sigh.  Shore up the gates...  The crashers are sure to try to rush the perimeter again this year.

Expect to see the over 30's flocking to Riot Fest this year instead, where we're beyond excited about the legendary lineup.  ChiIL Live Shows will be there for sure!!  We can't wait. That said... there are a LOT of music lovers super stoked about the Lolla lineup and it's sure to be a rager!

ACT OUT: More bang for the bear... at Redmoon Theatre #ChiILPicksList #DiscountCode

Bellboys, Bears and Baggage at Redmoon

Chi, IL Live Shows on our Radar

This bear has endured a marshmallow firing range and a host of entertaining indignities and adventures! On the bright side, he's working more shows than many Chicago equity actors and he's finally got TOP billing in Redmoon Theatre's new promenade style spring show where he'll be joined by 7 more of his kin. We can "bearly" contain our excitement. Bah dum bum. Sorry... couldn't resist.  Come "Wonder Around" indeed!

DO THE MATH:  27 rooms + a cast of 35-40 including 12 masked actors + 8 bellboys/guides + 8 bears/agents of chaos + one bike riding bar tending BEAR = the potential for one heck of a fun night!!

ChiIL Mama's Skelebration Shots -- Redmoon Day of the Dead 2013:

Here at ChiIL Live Shows/ChiIL Mama, we have enjoyed Redmoon's unique vision for decades now. We can't wait to check out Bellboys Bears and Baggage.  We'll be there for sure... will YOU?! Redmoon knows how to rock a theme and their quirky, visual, multimedia extravaganzas are must see theatre. All ages.

Bellboys, Bears and Baggage... AND BARDS?!
If that's not enough to entice you... throw in Shakespeare and you've got a deal!

Redmoon’s largest indoor show to-date riffs on some of the stranger and more striking elements of Shakespeare’s The Winter’s Tale, including the use of Time as a physical character, the unique mash-up of tragedy and comedy, the contradictory absurdity of a ship landing on the coast of a landlocked nation, and one of Shakespeare’s most well-known but enigmatic stage directions, “Exit, pursued by a bear.”

ChiIL Mama's ChiIL Picks List

Why?  Do the Math:
27 rooms. Redmoon is building rooms of various size throughout its cavernous 18,000-square-foot headquarters, each with its own lighting and a vintage record player setting a unique tone.
o   One room features a forest, pond and boat.
o   Another has a surreal kitchen on a spring morning.
o   Another, an elaborate bedroom with some hidden surprises.

35-40 performers overall
o   8 Bellboys, who serve as guides/chaperones for the audience
o   8 Bears, who serve as agents of chaos
o   12 masked actors, portraying two main characters throughout the various scenes

A new mobile device, the “Piano Bar,” that’s part Bear-playing-piano and part functional bar, which will roam the space.

But of course!

Redmoon presents its Spring Spectacle
Bellboys, Bears and Baggage

Epic indoor journey
combining unique masks, movement and richly detailed rooms
in one-of-a-kind, choose-your-own-adventure through Redmoon’s
expansive industrial home

2120 S. Jefferson St, May 18 – June 8

Redmoon, Chicago’s acclaimed Spectacle theater, presents its 2014 Spring Spectacle, Bellboys, Bears and Baggage, bringing the magnitude of its outdoor Spectacle performances indoors to transform its massive 18,000-square-foot Pilsen warehouse studio into a theatrical world of revelry, reflection and revelation. Audiences are given the freedom to move about Redmoon's one-of-a-kind space to encounter scenes, images, dances and music. Bellboys, Bears and Baggage is performed Thursday through Sunday evenings, with staggered entrance times, at 2120 S. Jefferson Street, May 18 – June 8

Conceived by Jim Lasko (Redmoon Executive Artistic Director) and Blake Montgomery (former Artistic Director of the Building Stage), directed by Montgomery and designed by Frank Maugeri (Redmoon Producing Artistic Director).

Redmoon brings its outdoor large-scale productions indoors. Scenes are played in separate rooms throughout the mammoth home, each richly detailed, using time, space and architecture to explore theatrical dimension. Bears prowl the space, both in and in between the scenes. Character masks provide visual continuity as the audience sees a male and female protagonist in various moments that, collectively, investigate falling in and out of love. A corps of luggage-toting bellboys usher viewers through the space. The story is not linear. Audiences can choose for themselves what scenes, and in what order, they experience during the event. Secrets and magical surprises reward viewers’ curiosity, challenging and encouraging them to create their own journey. Movement, gesture, imagery and music combine for a mostly language-free storytelling experience.

“Normally in the theater, we sit in one place and watch as a series of events are presented to us. Even in the ‘promenade’ style, the order of events is usually pre-determined,” Montgomery noted. “The result is a passive form of entertainment where the audience has little responsibility for their own experience. Bellboys, Bears and Baggage creates a world rich in detail and depth of feeling that exists continuously in looped patterns, of various lengths installed in various rooms and of various scales, throughout the space. No two audience members will share the same experience, but all will begin to see the same patterns and themes emerge. I’m thrilled to create an experience that gets the audience onto their feet and into their heads and using their hearts, changing the role of the audience through a dramatic landscape in four dimensions.”

Dates, Entrance Times and Tickets
Bellboys, Bears and Baggage opens Sunday, May 18 and runs every Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday evening through June 8.

Audiences enter every half hour, 7-9 pm Thursdays, 7-11 pm Fridays and Saturdays, and 6-8 pm Sundays. The experience is designed to take approximately 90 minutes, but may vary depending on each individual’s choices as they craft their own personal journey. A lounge with cash bar opens one hour prior to the first entrance and remains open until 11 pm Thursdays, 1 am Fridays and Saturdays, and 10 pm Sundays.

Tickets are $30 general admission, $25 each for groups of 10 or more, or $15 for students with valid ID ages 16 and up. Tickets are available through Redmoon’s box office at 312-850-8440 x123 or online at www.redmoon.org.

Redmoon Says:
I wanted to share how excited we are for you to join us at Bellboys, Bears, and Baggage.

You are not going to believe our fully transformed space.  We've created an entirely new world for you to explore - with 17,000 square feet, multiple installations, interactive amusements, and more - all inspired by Shakespeare's The Winter's Tale.

This is our first Spring Spectacle at our home in Pilsen, and it is a mammoth, epic production.

You have three weekends to see this one-of-a-kind show.  Click here to buy your tickets now.

Best,
Frank
Producing Artistic Director
