We Are Proud to Present a Presentation
About the Herero of Namibia, Formerly Known as
South West Africa, From the German Sudwestafrika,
Between the Years 1884-1915

Written by Jackie Sibblies Drury
Directed by Hallie Gordon and Gabrielle Randle

February 27 – March 23, 2019
 *Recommended for ages 14+*

Following the Run, the Production Will Have a Public Tour to Six Chicago Neighborhoods
in Partnership with BUILD, Inc, the Chicago Park District and Chicago Public Library

I'll be out for the press opening, March 2nd, so check back soon for my full review. As a parent of two CPS high school students, I can't rave enough about how wonderful the Steppenwolf for Young Adults (SYA) program truly is. We're eager to catch their latest, a hilarious and enlightening production with the longest show title I've ever seen.

Rehearsals are underway for Steppenwolf for Young Adults (SYA) second play of the 2018-19 season, which asks, “When you feel lost, how do you find your way?” Steppenwolf for Young Adults Artistic Director Hallie Gordon and Gabrielle Randle co-direct We Are Proud to Present A Presentation About the Herero of Namibia, Formerly Known as South West Africa, From the German Südwestafrika, Between the Years 1884 - 1915, which will include a tour to six Chicago neighborhoods in partnership with Steppenwolf Education City Connections partners, BUILD, Inc, the Chicago Park District and Chicago Public Library. Each stop on the tour is open to the public and will include a community workshop, a performance of the play and a post-show discussion.

Public performances at Steppenwolf for We Are Proud to Present a Presentation… will take place March 2 at 3pm & 7:30pm; March 8 at 7:30pm; March 9 at 3pm & 7:30pm; March 15 at 7:30pm; and March 16 at 3pm & 7:30pm in the Upstairs Theatre, 1650 N Halsted St. Single tickets to public performances ($15-20) are on sale now through Audience Services at 312-335-1650 or steppenwolf.org. Weekday performances are reserved for school groups only; more than 15,000 Chicago Public School students will see SYA productions each year. More info at steppenwolf.org/education. See show page for content advisory and details.

We Are Proud to Present a Presentation…features Will Allan (Actor 3/Another White Man), Terry Bell (Actor 2/Black Man), Taylor Blim (Actor 5/Sarah), Jeffrey Owen Freelon Jr. (Actor 4/Another Black Man), Michael Holding (Actor 1/White Man) and Jennifer Latimore (Actor 6/Black Woman). Previously announced Daniel Kyri is no longer in the cast due to a scheduling conflict.

There’s more to history than what’s in the books. We Are Proud to Present a Presentation… tells the story of what happens when a group of actors explore the long forgotten––or possibly never remembered––history of German colonization of Namibia and its devastating effects. This gut-wrenching, intelligent, often funny—until it’s not— play asks us, what happens when we only have one side of the story?

“SYA is dedicated to creating work that is both provocative and drives us to think harder and deeper about who we are and the choices we make. We are so excited to be producing We Are Proud to Present a Presentation…a powerful story that explores themes of race, representation, storytelling and the power group-thinking can have on an individual. Our season theme is “When you feel lost, how do you find your way?” – a question that every character in this play must ask themselves. SYA hasn’t yet produced a play structured like this one, and we are thrilled that we have the opportunity to share it with our audiences,” shares co-director Hallie Gordon.

Chi, IL LIVE Shows On Our Radar:

When we stick to our guns, who pays the price?

Steppenwolf for Young Adults 2016/17 season features two plays in conversation with one another exploring how we participate in the culture of violence that surrounds us through our beliefs and convictions. The season opens with the world premiere of The Burials, by Caitlin Parrish and directed by Erica Weiss and is followed by the world premiere adaptation of Walter Dean Myers's critically acclaimed novel, Monster, adapted by Steppenwolf Artistic Producer Aaron Carter and directed by Hallie Gordon.

Through these two stories, we will investigate the aftermath of tragedy – through a community’s response to a mass shooting and one teen’s journey to understand himself in the face of a culture of violence.

SYA Artistic Director Hallie Gordon comments, "Given how hauntingly familiar this type of violence is, by relating the enormity of a story like Antigone to the epic nature of gun violence, we aim to ask how each of us can help to imagine a world without this type of tragedy and how we can inspire young people to help us lead the charge in doing so."

"We wanted to take this story, which is a story about young people, and make it epic. We wanted to give young people a voice and elevate it," says director Erica Weiss. "We were privileged to be able to go to high schools around Chicagoland and talk to students about what their experiences have been growing up in a country where gun violence, and specifically school shootings, is a very real possibility. It was important for us to reflect and listen to the way that students experience this reality," shares playwright Caitlin Parrish.

Edna has suffered a number of losses as she has aged, and now faces the stealthy advance of cancer embodied by an intimate figure that she could do without. Home for a visit, Edna’s son Andrew tries to bridge the gulf between the childhood love they shared and the aggressively polite but baffling relationship they now live with. Mother and son stumble toward honesty as they wrestle with the distractions–-both mundane and profound—that keep us from real connection.

About Constellations
Roland (a bee keeper) and Marianne (a theoretical physicist) meet at a party. In that single moment, an unfathomable multitude of possibilities unfold. Their chance meeting might blossom into a meaningful relationship or a brief affair: it might lead to nothing at all. Each step along those possible paths in turn offers a new series of potential outcomes: a marriage can exist alongside a breakup and a tragic illness can exist on a parallel plane to a happily ever after. In this clever, eloquent and moving story, Roland and Marianne’s romance plays out over a myriad of possible lifetimes, capturing the extraordinary richness of being alive in the universe.

ADULT NIGHT OUT: Mary Page Marlowe at Steppenwolf

Chi, IL Live Shows On Our Radar:
Mary Page Marlowe
From the Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright of Killer Joe, Superior Donuts and August: Osage County. Extended by popular demand through June 5.

"Intensely thoughtful…the work has depth and an elegant potency"
– Variety

"A captivating portrait of an ordinary life"
– TimeOut Chicago

Here at ChiIL Mama and ChiIL Live Shows, we've been so booked with reviews and our own rehearsals we have still not caught Mary Page Marlowe yet. This production is high on our must see list and we're hoping to get over to Steppenwolf this week to review.

We're eager to see Blair Brown and Carrie Coon in action and one of the cast's youngest, Caroline Heffernan. She was a gymnastics team mate of my daughter's for years and it's been a joy to see her masterful portrayals at Lookingglass Theatre, Chicago Shakespeare Theatre, and Gift theatre.

"Deeply moving…intoxicatingly thrilling. Four Stars (out of four)"
– Chicago Tribune

“Exquisite new play… beautiful and affecting…about the evolutions, reversals and resurrections in a woman’s life”
– The New York Times

Mary Page Marlowe is an accountant from Ohio. She’s led an ordinary life, making the difficult decisions we all face as we try to figure out who we really are and what we really want. As Tracy Letts brings us moments—both pivotal and mundane—from Mary’s life, a portrait of a surprisingly complicated woman emerges. Intimate and moving, Mary Page Marlowe shows us how circumstance, impulse and time can combine to make us mysteries… even to ourselves.
Get up close: see the actors and experience the drama in the most intimate and exciting way possible. Steppenwolf’s newly added Pit Seats will bring you as close as you can get to the stage—at only $30/seat.

"Artfully crafted…luminous performances"
– Daily Herald

“It’s the most purely beautiful play that Mr. Letts has given us, and its subtleties will linger in your mind long after you leave the theater”
– Wall Street Journal

Steppenwolf Theatre Company is pleased to announce the addition of This Is Our Youth by Kenneth Lonergan to this summer’s line-up. Directed by ensemble member Anna D. Shapiro, the production features Michael Cera (Arrested Development, Juno), Kieran Culkin (Igby Goes Down, Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World) and Tavi Gevinson (Enough Said) in the Upstairs Theatre (1650 N Halsted St), June 10 – July 27, 2014. Tickets ($20 - $82) go on sale to the public on Friday April 25 at 11am, and can be purchased online at steppenwolf.org or through Audience Services (1650 N Halsted St) at 312-335-1650.

The Steppenwolf Theatre Company production of This Is Our Youth will be produced on Broadway by Scott Rudin, with performances beginning Monday August 18 at the Cort Theatre, and an opening night scheduled for Thursday, September 11th.

Set in New York in 1982, This Is Our Youth follows forty-eight hours in the lives of three very lost young souls: Warren, a dejected nineteen year old who has just stolen $15,000 from his abusive, tycoon father; Dennis, his charismatic drug-dealing friend who helps Warren put the stolen money to good use; and Jessica, the anxiously insightful young woman who Warren yearns for. Funny, painful and compassionate, This Is Our Youth is a living snapshot of the moment when many young people go out into the world on their own, armed only with the ideas and techniques they developed as teenagersfar more sophisticated than their parents realize, and far less effectual than they themselves can possibly imagine.

Artistic Director Martha Lavey vividly remembers the first time she saw This Is Our Youth in New York. “The play speaks so eloquently of its time,” Lavey notes, “that moment when the children of the ‘60s were parents themselves and had landed in Reagan’s America, and of a time in one's lifethat confusing period of early adulthood before one has made a mark in the world. Kenny Lonergan has captured, with great wit and pathos both the timeless generational struggle and a moment in our country’s history that continues to affect our sense of who we are.”

Anna D. Shapiro is currently directing Of Mice and Men, (opening April 16, 2014) at Broadway’s Longacre Theatre. She was nominated for a 2011 Tony Award® for her production of Stephen Adly Guirgis’ award-winning play, The Motherf**ker with the Hat, and was awarded the 2008 Tony®, Drama Desk and Outer Critics Circle Awards for Best Direction of a Play for her production of Tracy Letts’ August: Osage County. Anna has been a Steppenwolf Ensemble member since 2005. Her Steppenwolf directing credits include A Parallelogram and Tracy Letts’ adaptation of The Three Sisters, among others. Other recent directing credits include Domesticated (Lincoln Center Theatre), A Parallelogram (Mark Taper Forum), A Number (American Conservatory Theatre) and The Drawer Boy (Paper Mill Playhouse). Shapiro is a graduate of the Yale School of Drama and Columbia College. She is a full-time professor in Northwestern University's Department of Theatre and has served as the Director of the Graduate MFA Directing Program since 2002.

Kenneth Lonergan’s plays include The Starry Messenger, Lobby Hero (Drama Desk Best Play Nominee), and The Waverly Gallery (2001 Pulitzer Prize finalist). Lonergan has also garnered critical acclaim for his screenplays, including Gangs of New York (2002 Academy Award Nominee for Best Original Screenplay), You Can Count on  Me (2001 Academy Award Nominee for Best Original Screenplay) and Analyze This.
