REVIEW: Paws of Fury: The Legend of Hank, Now Playing Only In Theatres

What We're Watching: Movies On Our Radar

Guest Review

by Lori Morrison and Family

Paws of Fury: The Legend of Hank is about a young dog, Hank (Michael Cera), down on his luck but with a head full of dreams. Hank is determined to make his dream come true by learning to become a Samurai. Lucky for him, a once great Samurai named Jimbo (Samuel L Jackson) is available to teach him as long as he can defend a village of cats with a No Dogs Allowed policy. Ika Chu (Ricky Gervais) wishes to destroy their village to expand his kingdom and secure his spot as the new Shogun.

This is an animated comedy loosely based on Mel Brooks' 1974 film Blazing Saddles. Mel Brooks voices The Shogun.

It is filled with cliches, references to other movies and breaking of the 4th wall moments which sometimes works and sometimes doesn't. It is probably best for the 10 and under crowd.

Lori is an unschooling Chicago mom who lives in LaGrange with her three kids. She is a 2nd degree black belt in TKD and a burlesque dancer, who teaches self defense.

GUEST REVIEW:
Lori Morrison-Contreras

A baby panda goes missing. Other exotic animals and "Best in Show" dogs have gone missing as well. It is up to Max, a rough and tumble canine street detective, and his often clueless human partner to solve the case.

This movie had it's funny moments. Like a lot of family movies, much of the humor is more adult and will probably go over the heads of most kids. Many Turner and Hooch references also.

Max, voiced by Chris “Ludacris” Bridges and Will Arnett in SHOW DOGS.

My 10 and 6 year olds really liked it. My 10 year old thought it was a lot like Scooby Doo with the detective work and hijinks ensuing. Max is a lot braver than Scooby Doo and eagerly walks into dangerous situations even when he shouldn't though.

Sprinkles, voiced by Gabriel Iglesias, Philippe, voiced by Stanley Tucci, and Max, voiced by Chris “Ludacris” Bridges, in SHOW DOGS.

My 8 year old and I thought it was just ok. It did have it's funny moments. The pigeon sidekicks were hilarious. Lessons are learned, friendships develop.

It was good to see Natasha Lyonne, the actress who plays Nikki on Orange is the New Black, in a very different role. Will Arnett is great. It would be good to see these two together again in a different movie.

Director: Raja Gosnell
Writers: Max Botkin and Marc Hyman

An age-old war is reignited when a young farmhand unwittingly opens a gateway between our world and a fearsome race of giants.

Unleashed on the Earth for the first time in centuries, the giants strive to reclaim the land they once lost, forcing the young man, Jack (Nicholas Hoult), into the battle of his life to stop them.  Fighting for a kingdom and its people, and the love of a brave princess, he comes face to face with the unstoppable warriors he thought only existed in legend… and gets the chance to become a legend himself.

Acclaimed filmmaker Bryan Singer directs the 3D epic action adventure “Jack the Giant Slayer,” starring Nicholas Hoult (“X-Men: First Class,” “Warm Bodies”) in the title role.  The film also stars Eleanor Tomlinson as Princess Isabelle; Stanley Tucci (“Captain America: The First Avenger”) as the deceitful Lord Roderick; Ian McShane (“Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides,” HBO’s “Deadwood”) as the besieged King Brahmwell; Bill Nighy (“Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows”) as the giants’ leader, General Fallon; and Ewan McGregor (“Star Wars,” “The Ghost Writer”) as palace guard Elmont.

Singer directs from a screenplay by Darren Lemke and Christopher McQuarrie and Dan Studney, story by Darren Lemke & David Dobkin.  The film is produced by Neal H. Moritz, David Dobkin, Bryan Singer, Patrick McCormick and Ori Marmur, with Thomas Tull, Jon Jashni, Alex Garcia, Toby Emmerich, Richard Brenner, Michael Disco and John Rickard serving as executive producers.

The creative filmmaking team includes director of photographer Newton Thomas Sigel, production designer Gavin Bocquet, editors John Ottman and Bob Ducsay, and costume designer Joanna Johnston. The music was composed by John Ottman.

A New Line Cinema presentation, in association with Legendary Pictures, “Jack the Giant Slayer” opens March 1, 2013 and will be distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company.

Disclosure:  Thanks to Gofobo and Warner Bros. for providing us with review and giveaway tickets and cool promotional giveaway swag.  You rock!   All opinions are our own.
