PHOTO FEATURE: ChiIL Mama's Adventures at the 25th Annual Gymnastics Beach Meet #Chicago #Gymnastics #OriginalPhotos

Beach Meet 2015

This past Saturday and Sunday, Chicago hosted the 25th annual Gymnastics Beach Meet out at gorgeous Montrose Beach and I'm thrilled to report, Sage medaled in both of her events! Her team of 3 - The Supergirls medaled for their rockin' floor routine and Sage also took 5th in vault. We'll post videos in the near future too, so check back with ChiIL Mama like we vote in Chi, IL... early and often.

This is one of our favorite meets of the year because 8-34 year olds compete, including college teams, and unlike regular meets, colorful costumes and funky accessories are encouraged for tumbling and gymnastics. Competitors also choose their own music and choreography instead of everyone doing the same routine to the same music like USAG meets, so it's much more fun for the spectators too. Both of my kids, Sage and Dugan, competed waaaaay back in 2010 and Sage has competed from 2013 to present as well. This meet us utterly unique and crazy colorful.

Check out our full slide show of shots right here:
We'll also embed our favorite photos below.

I'm still in awe that the Chicago Park District trucks copious numbers of mats, a full sized spring floor, and all the gymnastics apparatus for women's and men's competitions down to the sandy shores of Lake Michigan. It's no small feat, but so much fun it's well worth the effort! After the athletes compete, most stay on and swim and play in the water with their family and friends.

In most gymnastics meets, each athlete competes solo on bars, beam, floor and vault with similar ages and levels. The Beach Meet is quite different. Athletes compete in groups of 3 with a floor routine together and then each competes just one additional event, with one each on bars, beam and vault. In my daughter, Sage's group, she was on vault and picked up a last minute spot on bars as a sub for Ava, who was injured the day before and unable to swing it.

Don't let the sandy setting and playful vibe fool you though. This is one seriously hard competition, because the ages are just broken into 2 broad categories, older & children, with the 3 athletes' ages averaged. The competition is fierce!

We're so proud of all the hard work and creativity the girls put into their routine from choosing the music and choreography, to designing and ordering their costumes and accessories.

Here's a little early Throwback Thursday action from 2010. Dugan placed 2nd in boys tumbling that year, and Sage, freshly out of a cast for a broken ankle gymnastics injury, still placed and got a ribbon.

Our Photo Favs From Beach Meet 2015:

"The Bridezillas" getting creative with the costuming!

Super Girl, Kimberly is super on the beam and she's a super big sister too!

All ages fun in the audience.

We lucked out on the weather. Saturday's athletes had 110 degree heat index and ripping thunder storms. Sunday, we got 80's, cloud cover and
a nice lake breeze!

High fives and congrats among team mates. Avondale Park Gymnastics is tiny but mighty!

That's really super, Supergirls!

I've heard rumors that CPD is going to discontinue the Beach Meet, but I hope that's not true. It's a well loved tradition and something so unique, it should run at least another 25 years or more. Long live Beach Meet!

ChiILin' With The March of Dimes MoD Squad #imbornto #MoDSquad #TBT #ThrowbackThursday #ad

Born to Blog

Everyone's born to do something amazing. What's your super power?

#TBT Bonnie age 1
#imbornto be curious & creative

Disclosure: It's our pleasure to partner up with The Motherhood and March of Dimes. We have been compensated for sharing this campaign with our readers. As always, all opinions are our own.

Back when I was born, in the late 60's, blogging didn't exist. Heck, we didn't even have microwaves, Blu-ray players (or even VCRs). Computers were astronomical and ginormous, and cell phones were science fiction. I LOVE to see the TBT/ Throwback Thursday posts my friends and family put on Facebook and Twitter weekly, so we can time travel like Dr. Who's Tardis. Speaking of Dr. Who, the iconic and still running BBC show predated me, but Facebook and Twitter were decades from development. My daughter recently asked me if cars and telephones had been invented yet, in my childhood. Yes... Yes, they had. I'm not quite THAT old.

#TBT Bonnie age 5 #imbornto be a big sister, always growing, teaching and learning too

Back then I wanted to grow up to be a deep sea diver. And in elementary school when I did a report on wanting to be a reporter or a news anchor, I was told girls couldn't do that! Ditto for drumming. Thankfully my own son and daughter (now 14 & 12) live in more enlightened times-- My daughter's playing drums on stage at Girls Rock Camp for the 2nd year this summer. Still, a startling number of kids in the US are born prematurely, and need extra care, support and funds to reach their dreams and grow up healthy.

#TBT Bonnie now & at ages 1, 2, 3. I can't wait to see what my kids are born to do! Maybe it hasn't been invented yet.

Some of my dreams have morphed and changed over the years. I'm all good not drumming and diving. And I adore writing and using my influence for social good, instead of reporting the nightly news. ChiIL Mama's elated to be chosen as one of just 39 mom bloggers nationwide, representing the 39 weeks of a full term pregnancy. Together we're the Mod Squad, and we're spreading the word about The March of Dimes and how you can help! Check back with us early and often from April through June and follow along on the #imbornto hashtag.

I'm born to be a daughter and a mother, and leave the world a better place through my words, influence & actions. My parents were born in 1938 (Just like March of Dimes). Think of the monumental changes, inventions, advancements and innovations that have occurred in their lifetimes!

What are you & your kids born to do? Only time will tell.

About March of Dimes
President Franklin D. Roosevelt founded The March of Dimes in 1938 to combat polio and they succeeded. In the decades to follow, they never stopped protecting the health of America’s children. March of Dimes-funded research has saved millions of babies from death or disability. New research offers hope for treatments and preventions for serious problems, like birth defects and premature birth.

Today, the March of Dimes is inspired by all babies – those born healthy and those who need help to survive and thrive. These babies are the millions of reasons behind our urgent mission and why the March of Dimes:
supports all important research into the causes and preventions for premature birth and birth defects
fights for health insurance for all pregnant women and children
pushes for expanded newborn screening that could save lives and prevent disabilities
reaches out to women with healthy pregnancy information and services
provides comfort and information to families with a newborn in intensive care

Congrats to Supersonic Sage and The Chicago Comets on The USAG Winter Classic #gymnastics #TBT

After this blog post, I promise I'll lay off on the proud mama posts, at least till the meet next month. Thanks for bearing with me. I know we've been all over social media with the gymnastics pixs since Friday. These kids work SO hard and practice long hours to push their limits, and it's so exciting to see them fly!

FIRST FIRST PLACE #ThrowBackThusday

ChiIL Mama, Oct 2010
Sagezilla had her first gymnastics meet of the season Sunday. She was worried, anxious and said her stomach was chasing it's tail. We've always told the kids it doesn't matter to us if they win or come in last. It's more important to have fun, make friends, and build up an encouraging team. We tried to reassure Zilla that there's no pressure to score x number of points or outdo anyone. We said as long as she remembered her routine and got out there and did her best, we'd be proud of her, no matter what. The kids have done park gymnastics since they were both 1 year olds, not to win at all costs, but to strengthen their bodies and brains, and increase their flexibility.

She was freaking out too much to eat, but we finally got her to settle down by encouraging big yoga breaths. But it was a stressful morning. In the end, all the fear was for nothing. Sagezilla came home with 5 blue ribbons--first place in vault, bars, beam, floor and all around! Last year, she only did one full blown gymnastics meet where she placed 8th all around and her highest place was 5th in vault. By the end of the day, she was beaming and ecstatic. The same kid who was a ball of nerves in the morning, ended the day saying she loves gymnastics so much she wished she had meets every day!

LAST FIRST PLACE
January 2015, Winter Classic USAG

Check out our full set in the slide show here and favorites embedded below.

We were a bit worried when they put Sage in the senior age group, while her team mates, including a girl who is a mere 5 days younger, were all in the juniors. Sage will still be just 11 till mid May. At the Winter Classic, they split the kids into a field of 12 competitors, so the cut offs weren't by a set age or birth date but by number. Still, she held her own and did a fantastic job against the older, bigger kids in the seniors group taking 1st on bars, 2nd on beam and vault and 3rd all around! The Chicago Comets also took Team 1st!

For weeks, my 11 year old, Sage, has been obsessed with the idea of winning a snow globe trophy, only given to the top 3 athletes in each level. She competed in the Winter Classic two years ago and didn't even place, so she's spent the past two years honing her skills and all the hours of practice and fierce determination paid off!

Go for the Globe Indeed!

We're not hugely competitive as parents and were always the type to encourage our kids to do their best, but not push winning. We always made a point of telling them we're proud of them win or lose, and that learning to lose without tears and win without gloating are as important as the actual sport.

Sage began gymnastics as a tiny 18 month old in a Moms and Tots class and loved it. By age 7 she was good enough to make the developmental team and begin competing. The past 4 years she's made it to state, and 3 years ago she took first in state in All Around. She's made some great friend on team and lives for gymnastics.

#TBT Meeting Olympic Gymnasts:

At the ripe old age of 9, Sage said her goal was to "get an autograph from at least 1 Olympic Gold Medalist before she reached double digits"! Her words, not mine. Cracked me up, but she did it. We also got to meet Gabby Douglas at a charity breakfast, later the same year! We got to see Cathy Rigby play an awesome Peter Pan via Broadway in Chicago, when the tour came through town in January 2013. And we got autographs from Chicago speed skater Nancy Swider-Peltz jr whose coach/mom was an Olympic speed skater and whose younger brother is also in training, spring 2014.

Aly Raisman-Olympic Gold Medalist signs photos at American Girl Place, Chicago. Shown with 9 year old Chicago competitive gymnast, Sage.

Aly says her favorite event is floor (her best event as well--as she took the Olympic Gold for her floor routine!). When she asked Sage what her favorite is Sage replied "I like floor, too, but my very favorite is bars."   Sage will be competing in her first USAG (Jr. Olympics) Meets this January.   She's competed the past two years in the IPDGC meets, going to state both years and taking first in state in 2010!  Like Aly, Sage started gymnastics as a toddler in Moms, Pops and Tots classes and never looked back. At age 9, Sage practices 10 hours a week with her team and does an additional 3 hours a week of circus arts like lyra, Spanish Web, Chinese Pole, acro, unicycle, juggling, trapeze and silks!

Oct 2012 Iglow Mentoring Brunch With Gabby Douglas

From the very start, back in 1st grade, we told Sage, to just do her best, we were proud of her no matter what, and medals and trophies didn't really matter. Her response, "If I'm gonna to do this thing. I'm gonna win it!"
