Review: Magical Mercury Poppins Pops With Charismatic Charm
Here at ChiIL Mama and ChiIL Live Shows we've long been fans of Mercury Theater's large scale musicals in an intimate 290 seat setting. Poppins is no exception. We caught the Broadway touring extravaganza a few years back, and I have to say, Mercury Theatre's production is more personable. Jeff Award winner, Matthew Crowle (Bert), absolutely stole the show. And this production has now been Jeff nominated as well!
Nicole Armold (Mary Poppins) did a fabulous job of making the iconic role her own. We were also quite impressed with the children as well! This high energy cast puts on a crowd pleasing production. Don't miss this.
We also had a blast at the opening night cast party, the first event ever held in the newly renovated space next door. The newly christened "Venus" (next to Mercury, ya know) is out of this world!

It takes a lot of imagination and creativity to bring the magical world of Mary Poppins to life. After bringing mystery to The Addams Family, Neil Tobin is returning to Mercury Theater Chicago as Magic Designer. He is the creator of the solo show, “Supernatural Chicago”, which ran for 10 years of weekly performances at Castle nightclub. Russ Walko is also returning to Mercury Theater Chicago after building the beautiful Jeff nominated puppets of Avenue Q in 2014. Walko has built and performed puppets on the television shows “Community” and “The Simpsons.” His puppets were featured in the Broadway production of The Pee-Wee Herman Show Live, and is no stranger to Chicago theater, having created puppets for multiple StarKids Productions.
MARY POPPINS was written by Julian Fellows (creator of Downton Abbey), with music and lyrics by Disney Legends Richard M. Sherman and Robert B. Sherman, with new songs and additional music and lyrics by Anthony Drewe and George Stiles.
After an exhaustive search and casting process, Mercury Theater Chicago is pleased to introduce a bright new talent to Chicago; Nicole Armold as Mary Poppins. Joining her is Jeff Award winner and Broadway talent Matthew Crowle as Bert. Rounding out the cast for this magical adventure will be Kayla Boye, Pearle Bramlett, Timothy Eidman, Dan Gold, Cory Goodrich, Sage Harper, Graham Hawley, Casey Lyons, Ashley Lanyon, Conor McGarry, Kevin McKillip, Leah Morrow, Peyton Owen, Erin Parker, Cameron Turner and Holly Stauder. The scenic design is by Adam Veness with costume design by Rachel Boylan, lighting design by Nick Belley and sound design by Mike Ross. The production stage manager is Kristi J. Martens with assistance by Jeri Fredrickson.
The beautifully renovated Mercury Theater Chicago is an intimate jewel box of a theater in the heart of the Southport Corridor, a sophisticated neighborhood of restaurants and boutiques just steps from Wrigley Field. A delightful theater destination, Mercury Theater Chicago takes care of its guests from the moment they arrive with valet service and dining at its adjoining restaurant, Grassroots.
The performance schedule for MARY POPPINS is Wednesdays at 7:30pm, Thursdays at 7:30pm, Fridays at 7:30pm, Saturdays at 3pm and 7:30pm and Sundays at 1pm and 6pm. Thursday matinees at 3pm are available from April 20 - May 28.

The magical nanny Mary Poppins will be played by newcomer Nicole Armold, and the loveable jack-of-all trades Bert will be played by Jeff Award winner Matthew Crowle. Last Call: Mary Poppins Closing November 6th!

Catch her while you can. This highly recommended, award winning production will be flying off after November 6th. We caught opening night and the kids and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Even at age 10, my son still loved the rousing dance numbers, familiar songs, the quirky plot, and the vibrant costumes. I got a kick out of the fact that my kids' favorite songs were my own childhood favorites...basically all the chimney sweep numbers.
This is THE classic story, with loads of stage magic and fun, new twists. Come see statues spring to life, chimney sweeps bring luck with a roof dancing, wall walking extravaganza of dance numbers, and so much more.
The home set, reminiscent of a giant, folding doll house, was quite impressive. And the magic and wonder will leave a lasting impression on adults and children alike.
Do not miss Mary Poppins at Cadillac Palace. The show must close November 6th.

Even with a competition gymnastics injury requiring a week on crutches, we managed to "step in time" and had great fun with this high flyin' musical.
Our temporarily handicapped status gave us an interesting perspective. We discovered Cadillac Palace has amazingly helpful staff, bathrooms down flights of stairs, and the slowest elevator in the universe! Patrons were also extra kind to Sage, complimenting her pretty dress and remarking how well she was getting around.
She dutifully said thank you to the complimenters, but my fav part of the evening was the bathroom line, when a passing lady told Sagezilla "My, what a pretty princess you are!" eliciting a horrible grimace and a little tongue sticking out. Of course that made the women in line around us crack up. I gave Sagezilla, the anti-princess, a little mom talk about how she should have said thank you, as it was meant as a compliment, but the punk inside me was cheering. Yay for little girls who don't buy into the princess pathology! You rock!

Mary Poppins Opens Today 10-15 at Cadillac Palace

I have fond, childhood memories of dressing up like chimney sweeps (complete with actual ashes from our fireplace) and recreating the big dance numbers from Mary Poppins. The movie was my first introduction to the fabulous history of the suffragettes, and I was endlessly intrigued by the crazy adventures and interesting characters Poppins introduced her young charges to. I can't wait to create new memories with my own children and the award winning Broadway production tonight.

The Chicago return of MARY POPPINS opens this Saturday, Oct. 15, 2011 at 8 p.m. at the Cadillac Palace Theatre (151 W. Randolph St.) for a limited engagement of four weeks through November 6, 2011. The tour launched in Chicago in March 2009 at the Cadillac Palace Theatre where it entertained over 300,000 patrons and grossed over $18.5 million at the box office during its 18-week engagement.

The entire original creative team has reunited to bring this magical story of the world's most famous nanny to audiences around North America. The MARY POPPINS North American Tour began performances on March 25, 2009 and has played to two million delighted theatergoers in 32 cities to date.
Rachel Wallace will star as "Mary Poppins" while original Broadway company member, Nicolas Dromard, will assume the role of "Bert".
Joining Wallace and Dromard will be Laird Mackintosh as "George Banks", Blythe Wilson as "Winifred Banks", Rachel Izen as "Mrs. Brill", Dennis Moench as "Robertson Ay", Q.
