Shrek-Mean, Green Theatre Scene
Shrek is only roaring through Rosemont Theatre till tomorrow, so get your tickets and go see this fun adaptation. Here's our prior post.
We checked out the show last night and the whole family enjoyed it. I was impressed with the nonconformist, grrrl power contrast to most fairy tales. The kids loved the colorful costumes, the amazing dragon, rat, and prince puppetry, and the jokes. Even if the dad in your family is a grouchy ogre about musical theatre, we bet he'll be able to relate to Shrek--an older, round bellied curmudgeon of a loner, but an all around good guy under the rough demeanor.
ChiIL Mama recommends Shrek The Musical for family friendly fun for all ages.
SHREK THE MUSICAL will play the Rosemont Theatre, 5400 N. River Road for one weekend only, Nov. 25 – 27, 2011. Tickets, which range in price from $22.50 - $87.50, are now on sale.
Performances are Friday, Nov. 25 at 2 and 7:30 p.m.; Saturday, Nov. 26 at 10 a.m., 3 p.m. and 8 p.m. and Sunday, Nov. 27 at 1 p.m. Tickets can be purchased online at www.rosemonttheatre.com or by calling Ticketmaster at 800-745-3000. Tickets are also available for purchase at the Rosemont Theatre box office and at all Ticketmaster outlets. Groups of 10 or more, call GroupTix at 877-447-7849.
Nutcracker is in The House (Review & Photo Filled Recap)
Even intermission was entertaining at The House Theatre's Nutcracker
We had the great pleasure of checkin' out opening night of The House Theatre's unique version of the holiday classic, The Nutcracker. ChiIL Mama highly recommends this production as a great, family friendly experience. Check out our past coverage here for a video and show description.
I've seen a number of versions of The Nutcracker over the years, ranging from the classic ballet in ornate symphony centers, complete with chandeliers, to the free and fabulous, DIY Dance Along Nutcracker at The Cultural Center. However, this is undoubtedly my favorite. This funky, edgy, urban update is entirely welcome in a season of saccharine sweet holiday productions.
The plot is darker than the original, with the death of Clara's older brother, who was a Marine, and her subsequent haunting. And the rat king scene is intense, with giant multi headed rat puppets and three of the set walls cracking open. Even Sagezilla, who is a pretty fearless 8 year old, closed her eyes and clung tightly to me. Even my 10 year old son was a bit creeped out, but did watch the whole scene. After the show, though, both kids were very enthusiastic about the production and both said they loved it.

production photo
In defense of the rats, I've also seen children freak out about the more traditional versions of the rat king's appearance....and even more benign characters like the sugarplum fairies. But parents with sensitive kids might want to check it out in advance. There were plenty of small children in the audience who enjoyed the show and did just fine with the darker bits. The cast shared cookies with front row kids, friendly toys spring to life, and the music is upbeat and fun.

production photo
Purists, should know there is no ballet in this version, and all the old, familiar songs are gone. But the new songs are wonderfully creative, and the depth and emotion of this multifaceted production makes it a compelling and completely unique take on this classic holiday tale. You'll even get to take home a paper ornament for your tree....a globe, a bell, or maybe even a RAT, if you're lucky.

It's Small Business Saturday Today-Shop Locally
We spent Black Friday hangin' out at home as a family, cuddling up watching movies, and avoiding the mauls....I mean, malls, at all cost. Sure there were smokin' deals to be had, but we were holding out for today and tomorrow--Small Business Saturday and Cyber Monday. We're all about shopping locally, as a first stop, and when at all possible. Then ordering on line is a great next step when you just can't find that illusive thing.
Small Business Saturday falls annually on the Saturday after Thanksgiving. It forms the trifecta with the two busiest shopping days of the year, Black Friday and Cyber Monday.
I'd never heard of Small Business Saturday before this year (they just started in 2010), but what a genius idea. We picked up a card about it at our local toy store, Play, in Logan Square, a few weeks back on Neighborhood Toy Store Day. Check out our photo filled feature here.
Why Shop Small Business Saturday?
There were nearly 28 million small businesses in the United States last year and over the past two decades, they created 65 percent of net new jobs, according to the U.S. Small Business Administration.
The small business advocacy group. The 3/50 Project says, "For every $100 spent in locally-owned, independent stores, $68 returns to the community through taxes, payroll and other expenditures".
“Small business is the engine of job creation in the US economy,” said Mr. Chenault, chairman and chief executive officer, American Express. “It is also among the sectors hardest hit by the recession. By spreading the word about Small Business Saturday, we can help raise awareness about the critical role small businesses play in cities and towns across the country at a time when they need support the most.”
Check 'em out on Facebook-Earn $25
American Express is launching campaigns on Facebook and Twitter driving consumers and business owners to facebook.com/SmallBusinessSaturday where they can participate in many ways, including:
- American Express is giving a $25 statement credit(1) to 100,000 Cardmembers who register their Card and use it to shop on Small Business Saturday at any locally-owned, independent small businesses that accept American Express.
- American Express is also giving $100 of free Facebook advertising(2) to 10,000 business owners who sign up at facebook.com/smallbusinesssaturday to help build online buzz and drive customers to shop at their businesses on Small Business Saturday. By simply entering a few pieces of information and clicking a button, these business owners can create a personalized, geo-targeted ad that will run on Facebook leading up to November 27th. Facebook has donated $500,000 in Facebook credits for these small business owners to use in the future.
- Small business owners can also download online promotional materials and use a number of social media tools to promote their businesses on the inaugural Small Business Saturday.
- Everyone can spread the word about the day and their favorite businesses by giving a shout-out to their favorite local shops and restaurants via Facebook and Twitter.
- For every person who ‘likes’ Small Business Saturday on Facebook, American Express is donating $1 up to $500,0003 to Girls Inc. to empower young women to be the entrepreneurs of tomorrow.

Enter to Win X and New York Dolls DVDs & 4 DVD Winners Announced
The Jesus Lizard
Elvis Costello
DVD Winners Announced-Music/Adult Category-Iggy Pop, Jesus Lizard, Live From Tokyo, Spectacle With Elvis Costello Season 2
What we're watching: New releases for the (adult/older kid) music lovers in your life.
Here are 4 of our favorite 2011 releases. And we've done you one better. We're not only giving you the scoop, we're giving 'em away to our readers as well. Here is our first round of winners:
1. the Jesus Lizard-Club--Erwin A.
2. Live from Tokyo--Paul B.
3. Spectacle With Elvis Costello-Season 2 (2 disc set)--Ron C.
4. Iggy and The Stooges LIVE-In the Hands of the Fans--AJ C.
The Jesus Lizard with inimitable front man, David Yow, was always something to see. Back in the day, I was there when he jumped into the audience wearing nothing but duct tape and sweat. I was there when he sat in with The Melvins at Fireside Bowl. Two years ago the punk kin finally got to see Jesus Lizard for themselves at Pitchfork, at the ripe old ages of 7 & 9. They still rocked, but the mama in me is relieved to say he kept his clothes on this time!
Directed by Matthew Robison (producer, Silver Jew - director, We Fun: Atlanta, GA Inside/Out) and produced by Henry Owings (Chunklet Magazine), The Jesus Lizard "CLUB" is the exclusive document of the The Jesus Lizard reunited for their first American performance in over a decade.
It was a tour that was heralded the world over, with stops at festivals and clubs all over the world. Sasha Frere-Jones of The New Yorker writes, "It may have been the only reunion show I've ever seen where I forgot almost immediately that the band hadn't played together in more than a decade."
Featuring the entire evening's performance, The Jesus Lizard "CLUB" goes inside a fan-favorite set list for over 90 minutes of an incendiary performance from one of the greatest bands of the modern era. The release will also include individual mp3 downloads for each track performed.
Trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pfW8LVbTrgk
Underground heavyweights The Jesus Lizard return to the stage and this DVD is from the first show of their reunion tour. The original band (David Yow, Duane Denison, David Wm. Sims, Mac McNeilly) was untouchable back in the '90s and are the exception that proves the rule when it comes to punk reunion shows/tours. Always an insanely tight live band, this show proves they still got it when it counts. Singer David Yow is the demented James Brown to the rest of the band's Famous Flames. Blood, sweat, punches, hair pulling and more! Recorded on July 14, 2009.

Where Musical Ideas Are Pushed To The Extreme
Portion Of Proceeds To Be Donated To The
Red Cross Tsunami Relief Fund In Japan
Live From Tokyo takes the viewer through the back streets in Shinjuku, the intersections in Shibuya, the alleys in Koenji, and all over Tokyo, as it highlights the innovative musicians that create the multi-faceted underground music scene.
Welcome to a world where ideas and genres are pushed to their extremes, with the general sentiment that there is new music waiting to be created.
Directed by U.S. filmmaker Lewis Rapkin, this fascinating documentary looks at Tokyo's music culture as a reflection of Japanese society and in relation to international music culture. Tokyo's reputation for an overwhelming variety of global information, media-saturated urban environment and cutting edge innovation, makes it the perfect sample for addressing a new outlook on music culture. We find ourselves well into the generation of hyper-connectivity and information culture. The music industry is transforming and listeners are accessing and treating music in a new way. Barriers that separated music scenes in the past are becoming less relevant as technology continues to connect artists. A new paradigm of music culture is upon us.
The film explores this eccentric music culture set within the back-drop of the modern Japanese megalopolis. Featuring surreal stop-motion animation, interviews and live performances by acts such as Nisennenmondai, Tenniscoats, DMBQ, PARA (Boredoms members), Shugo Tokumaru, Sexy-Synthesizer, Sajjanu, KIRIHITO, d.v.d, Optrum, Uhnellys, Samm Bennett, W. David Marx, Tokyo Pinsalocks and many more.
Audio tracks were donated by many of the bands that appear in the film and were compiled into a soundtrack album which will be included as a free digital download with the purchase of the DVD. A special code will be contained within the package of each DVD allowing the viewer to down¬load the album at no extra charge. A full track listing is posted at www.GoodCharamel.com.
Live from Tokyo was released on August 23rd on Good Charamel Records with distribution through MVD Visual. A portion of the proceeds from the sale of the Live From Tokyo DVD/ALBUM will be donated to the Red Cross Tsunami Relief fund in Japan.

Ben Ratliff of the NY Times writes, "Iggy Pop, now 63, knew that his body language translated into still photographs resembling Mannerist paintings...The Stooges attacked the album's eight songs, in a different order, just about perfectly."
Iggy and the band sound flawless as they rip through the archetype riffage of "Search and Destroy," "Raw Power," "Gimmie Danger" and more.
"Getting this top-notch performance of the entire Raw Power album by The Stooges realized a life long dream," Iggy Pop
MVD Entertainment Group, an industry leader in producing and distributing music-related audiovisual content, launched the In the Hands of the Fans series with the intention of utilizing the energy and talents of fans, who by means of an online video submission contest, win the opportunity to film a performance of their favorite band in HD and then interview the band members after the performance. I can't tell you how stoked we are about this new release. I had a chance to check out a review copy and also see it on the large screen at Bottom Lounge in Chicago, as part of Riot Fest 2011, back in October. The movie was followed by a live set from the legendary punks in the flesh. ChiIL Mama's live show photos from that night are here. Check out X from that night and more of our pit photos, live show video and band video interviews archived at our sister site, ChiIL Live Shows. They still know how to bring it after all these years. Clutch Rocks Sweden
Brandon Billings photo credit
I was so stoked to see one of our favorite bands is visiting one of our favorite countries this week! We were in Sweden for summer solstice in 2010 and happened upon a stained glass window that had a VERY strong resemblance to Clutch's front man, Neil Fallon. Check out our posts and photos about it HERE and see what you think. Maybe it's just his signature beard...but there's an uncanny resemblance.
I think a little road trip is in order. The world needs a shot of Neil actually in front of the stained glass window in the university town of Uppsala!
Here are our ChiIL Live Shows shots of Clutch opening for Black Label Society and Children of Bodom last November
Prolific hard rockers CLUTCH will continue their tour with a string of headlining shows through Scandanavia. Kamchatka will be providing support on these dates. CLUTCH have just confirmed an in store performance and signing for November 27th at Bengans in Goteberg, Sweden. The band will perform a special acoustic set.
Weathermaker Music will release the long awaited deluxe, double vinyl edition of CLUTCH's classic 2004 opus "Blast Tyrant" on November 29th via Indiemerchstore.com. Those pre-ordering the 181 gram vinyl package from the site prior to November 21st will also receive the limited edition CLUTCH Winter Tyrant Beanie and 24" die cut logo snowboard sticker!
The double vinyl package will also be available at North American retail outlets prior to the holidays. On December 13th, Weathermaker Music will release to CLUTCH friendly retailers, a limited amount of Blast Tyrant vinyl which will include an exclusive 7" picture disc, of which only the CLUTCH band members know the content! Look for a special announcement when the band returns from their European tour.

To most Chicagoans, Van Ghost needs no introduction... but these guys have been hard at work on their new album and you can expect to hear some new music tonight... ranging from epic folk ballads to gritty Americana tunes to classic rock laced jams.
Cornmeal's Allie Kral will be sitting in with the 5-piece band, and Van Ghost, as always, will feature the lovely Ms. Jennifer Hartswick on vocals, who just release her new album available here.
Oh! One last thing... you are ALL encouraged to wear ONLY BLACK and/or WHITE tonight. Chad Smith will be running a very special Van Ghost Photo Booth... so y'all better look dapper. Blah Blah Blah and Kellen & Me open the show.
Discount advance tickets are available at Schubas Ticketing now!
Let's do this! Doors @ 8:00pm. Show @ 9:00pm. Ages 17+.
