HELP OUT: The Actors Gymnasium Invites the Community to Celebrate 30 Years Under the Big Top

ChiIL Mama's ChiIL Picks List:

Exclusive Event with Midnight Circus

Honors the Past and Supports the Future

Here at ChiIL Mama and ChiIL Live Shows, we've adored both The Actors Gymnasium and Midnight Circus for decades. My own son and daughter grew up doing circus arts and were cast in numerous Actors Gymnasium youth circus shows over the years. Come on out and celebrate 30 years of AG and help out at the same time. The celebration isn’t just about looking back—it’s about paying it forward. All proceeds from the evening benefit the Actors Gymnasium's Student Scholarship Fund, ensuring that young artists can access their world-class training—regardless of financial circumstances.

The Actors Gymnasium, one of the nation’s premier circus and performing arts schools, invites the community to its 30th Birthday Bash happening Friday, September 19, 2025, at Tallmadge Park in Evanston, IL, under the big top!

This one-night-only event features an exclusive performance by Midnight Circus, followed by a birthday bash with drinks, dancing, and surprise performances—all set under an iconic circus tent.

“For 30 years, we’ve helped people learn to fly,” says Murphy Monroe, AG Executive Director, “This event celebrates our history by investing in our future—through the students whose talent, drive, and potential inspire us every day.”

Evening Highlights Include:

VIP Reception (6:00 PM): Early entry to the show, drinks, bites, alumni mingle, and more

Midnight Circus Exclusive Performance (7:30 PM)

Birthday Bash (9:00–11:00 PM): Live music, exclusive 30th anniversary beer from Illuminated Brew Works, and a meet-and-greet with Midnight Circus performers, AG alumni, teen ensemble, and more!

Tickets are available now at https://givebutter.com/AG30thBirthdayBash

Can’t attend? Make a tax-deductible donation to the Scholarship Fund at checkout

Actor’s Gymnasium serves more than 1,000 students annually and is a cultural cornerstone of Evanston’s arts scene. This celebration is a chance to support their future—one daring performance at a time.

EXTENDED: Cirque du Soleil's VOLTA Chicago Engagement Now Extended Two Weeks May 18 – July 6, 2019

The iconic Big Top will be raised for the first time at brand new location: Soldier Field!

The name VOLTA refers to a sudden about-face, a change in emotion or idea often used in poetry. It also speaks to the jolt of energy delivered through the show.

Cirque du Soleil is excited to add two weeks of performances of VOLTA’s Chicago engagement this spring. The show will be presented under its signature Big Top at the Soldier Field South Lot, 1410 Museum Campus Drive, Chicago, May 18 – July 6, 2019. Tickets, starting at $49, are available for purchase by visiting cirquedusoleil.com/volta or calling 1-877-9CIRQUE (1-877-924-7783).

ChiIL Mama will be ChiILin' in Chi, IL with Cirque du Soleil's VOLTA at the press opening, May 21st. Check back soon for my photo filled recap and review.

The show
Energetic, urban and contemporary, VOLTA is a captivating voyage of discovery that showcases never-before-seen under the Big Top acrobatics in a visually striking world. Driven by a stirring melodic score and inspired in part by the adventurous spirit that fuels the culture of street sports, VOLTA is a story of transformation. It is about being true to oneself, fulfilling one’s true potential, and recognizing one’s own power to make it possible. Ultimate freedom comes with self-acceptance, and with the liberation of the judgment of others.

BMX & Street Sports
The creators of VOLTA drew inspiration from the spirit of adventure that pervades the world of BMX, street sports and acrobatics. Whether they are on a bike, hopping from rooftop to rooftop, or double dutch rope skipping, urban sports enthusiasts constantly challenge themselves and defy convention.

Sure to be a Chicago crowd pleaser, VOLTA features a full-blown BMX park mounted on stage in front of the audience’s very eyes for the breathtaking BMX finale as riders invade the stage to deliver a jaw-dropping, fast and furious performance of nonstop acrobatics on wheels. The riders go up the jump boxes and perform air tricks before landing and leaping off the ramps again, crisscrossing and spinning their bikes in midair in a spirit of brotherhood.

The Costumes
The stunning costumes of VOLTA have been designed by Zaldy Goco, famous for his work with Lady Gaga, Michael Jackson, Britney Spears, Gwen Stefany and for TV show RuPaul’s Drag Race.

Chicago Connections
Here at ChiIL Mama & ChiIL Live Shows we LOVE our local circus scene. My teens have studied and performed circus arts since age 7 with Actors Gymnasium, Aloft, MSA, and CircEsteem. We've also publicized, enjoyed and shot stills at Midnight Circus shows for years. We're super excited two of Volta's performers are from Chicago and are Midnight Circus alums! Kevin Beverley and Kia Eastman are coming to Chicago as part of Cirque du Soleil’s show VOLTA!

MIDNIGHT CIRCUS IN THE PARKS 2014 FUNraising TOUR HAS FINAL PERFORMANCES THIS WEEKEND AT WELLES PARK #MCITP

TOURING CIRCUS HAS RAISED NEARLY $800,000 FOR CHICAGO PARKS

ChiIL Out With ChiIL Mama & Midnight Circus #ChiILPicksList

HELP OUT: Last call to catch the incomparably fabulous Midnight Circus and help fund the award winning Chicago Park District. They've been favorites of ours here at ChiIL Mama & ChiIL Live Shows for years now.

Midnight Circus Founders Jeff Jenkins and Julie Greenberg Jenkins announce a contribution of $800,000 to the Chicago Park District since 2007.  Midnight Circus in the Parks’ 2014 FUNraising Tour will come to a close this weekend with five performances under its intimate little big top tent in Welles Park, 2333 W Sunnyside Ave.

Here's Julie, Jeff, & their awesome offspring!

These family-friendly performances will take place on October 17, 2014 at 7pm, and October 18-19, 2014 at 2pm and 5pm. All proceeds will benefit the Parks.

Created in 2007 to bring communities together in their local parks, Midnight Circus in The Parks has played to over 60,000 audience members and raised nearly $800,000 for local park improvements. Midnight Circus plays at parks all over Chicago, bringing families together from Englewood and Grand Crossing on the south side to Edgewater and Lincoln Square on the north side and all points in between.

Midnight Circus in the Parks features an eclectic ensemble of acrobats, aerialists, eccentrics and one rescued dog.

The two-hour productions, which have toured eight Chicago Parks this season, take place under an intimate, little big top tent where no one has a bad seat.  This unique partnership between Midnight Circus, the Chicago Park District, all-volunteer park advisory councils and Midnight Circus sponsors is a Chicago tradition.

This year, Midnight Circus in the Parks earned the distinction of being the first and only American company invited to the prestigious Complètement du Cirque Festival in Montreal.

“This summer, alone, Midnight Circus in the Parks has played to nearly 15,000 people in parks throughout Chicago.  Our goal is to improve Chicago through our work and the proceeds are evenly distributed to partner parks to rebuild the parks one circus at a time.” says Jeff Jenkins.
