Chicago Shakespeare Theater’s WorldStage Series returns with Wise Children’s WUTHERING HEIGHTS January 27–February 19, 2023

Chicago Shakespeare Theater’s WorldStage Series returns with

Wise Children’s

WUTHERING HEIGHTS

adapted and directed by

groundbreaking theatermaker Emma Rice

The acclaimed international co-production from the United Kingdom in a limited engagement in

The Yard at Chicago Shakespeare,

January 27–February 19, 2023

Chicago Shakespeare Theater’s WorldStage Series returns with groundbreaking theatermaker Emma Rice’s exuberant reimagining of Emily Brontë’s gothic masterpiece, Wuthering Heights. The production combines live music, dance, puppetry, and a dash of impish irreverence to create an intoxicating revenge tragedy for our time. Hailed a Critic’s Pick by The New York Times, this wildly imaginative theatrical event from the UK is a co-production with the National Theatre, Wise Children, Bristol Old Vic and York Theatre Royal in association with Berkeley Repertory Theatre. Wuthering Heights runs as a special limited engagement in The Yard at Chicago Shakespeare, January 27–February 19, 2023.

The production marks a return of Emma Rice’s boundary-pushing work to Chicago Shakespeare, previously seen in her celebrated Tristan & Yseult with Kneehigh Theatre in 2014 and the presentation of Wise Children’s musical comedy Romantics Anonymous, streamed live from Bristol Old Vic in 2020. Both productions were part of Chicago Shakespeare Theater’s WorldStage Series, which has featured more than 1,300 artists in 96 productions from 22 countries spanning six continents to date. Wuthering Heights marks the return of in-person WorldStage performances after a two-year hiatus of international touring due to the pandemic.

The wild moors of Yorkshire are the setting for an epic story of love, revenge, and redemption. An orphaned Heathcliff is adopted by the Earnshaws and taken to live at Wuthering Heights—where he finds a kindred spirit in Catherine. As they grow up together, a fierce love ignites between them—and when forced apart, a brutal chain of events is unleashed.

London’s The Telegraph declares that the production "unleashes the fire and the fury of Brontë’s masterpiece in a full-throttle show," and BroadwayWorld calls it "audacious, ingenious, and visually stunning…Rice’s ambition is unbounded." The New York Times raves "this music-filled version is an embrace, an envelopment: a feat of storytelling that wraps itself around the audience, pulling us into its silliness and sorrow."

The company features Sam Archer (Lockwood/Edgar Linton/The Moors), Leah Brotherhead (Catherine), Georgia Bruce (Isabella Linton/Little Linton/The Moors), Ricardo Castro (Robert/The Moors), Katy Ellis (Zillah/The Moors), Stephanie Elstob (Swing), Lloyd Gorman (Mr. Earnshaw/ The Moors), TJ Holmes (Dr. Kenneth/The Moors), Jordan Laviniere (The Leader of The Yorkshire Moors), Tama Phethean (Hindley Earnshaw/Hareton Earnshaw/The Moors), Eleanor Sutton (Frances Earnshaw/Catherine Linton/The Moors), and Liam Tamne (Heathcliff). The production’s live music is performed by Sid Goldsmith, Music Director Pat Moran, and Vincent De Jesus, with TJ Holmes and Lloyd Gorman.

In addition to adaptor and director Emma Rice, the creative team includes Composer Ian Ross, Scenic and Costume Designer Vicki Mortimer, Sound and Video Designer Simon Baker, Lighting Designer Jai Morjaria, Choreographer Etta Murfitt, Puppetry Designer John Leader, Fight Director Kev McCurdy, and Music Director Pat Moran.

Chicago Shakespeare Theater’s WorldStage Series exemplifies a landmark commitment to bring the world’s great theaters to Chicago and Chicago Shakespeare to the world. The series has welcomed some of the globe’s most exciting theatrical events, affording theatergoers prime opportunities to experience different cultural traditions and must-see international shows without leaving Chicago.

Chicago Shakespeare makes its facility and performances accessible to all patrons through its Access Shakespeare programs. Accessible performances for Wuthering Heights include:

By Bonnie Kenaz-Mara

Get in gear and take the family to this time traveling holiday spectacle. Large screen imagery of time spiraling, and gears provide a fun backdrop for a nonlinear romp through history, jumping back and forth through decades of Christmas far and near past. Will the giant, magical clock be fixed or will Christmas 2022 be lost in space?

Here at ChiIL Mama we adore circus arts and magic. We've had the chance to see both A Magical Cirque Christmas and Lucy Darling's solo shows many times were excited to see the two together. Don't sleep on this one, though. A MAGICAL CIRQUE CHRISTMAS is only in Chicago for a 1 week run. Make some family memories with this fun, all ages show.

Holiday spirits run high with superhuman feats of circus arts and Darling illusions. Lucy Darling is a hoot, with her 1950's style glam and boozy illusions, making this show as fun for the adults as the littles. When Lucy's hosting, the whisky bottles never run out and under her magic touch, one shaker can simultaneously pour out 4 completely different cocktails.

Lucy Darling

In addition to illusions and table magic, A MAGICAL CIRQUE CHRISTMAS has high flying fun for the whole family, with aerial arts, and entertaining time travel to many decades of Christmas past.

Rock through time from the 50's to the present, with mind bending circus arts and magic, for multigenerational fun. This is one holiday feast for the senses that will appeal to the grandparents on down to the smallest tots.

Experiential gift are an excellent, clutter busting choice for those who have everything. This holiday, gift some family together time and lasting memories with cirque style acts and magical illusions, in this fast paced, time traveling tale. Recommended.

The Christmas tale begins as the Guardian of Time, who manages the changing of the seasons with his giant magical clock, finds himself less than thrilled to face the countdown to the 2022 holidays. In other words, he’s not feeling it. An optimistic, magical Christmas fairy played by the glamourous and comedic magician Lucy Darling whom David Copperfield calls “a true original – hilarious and delightful; An EXCEPTIONAL new talent in magic” appears to help but despite her best intentions, causes time to go haywire when she breaks the clock.

The story jumps along the time spectrum with visits to the rollicking 1920s a la The Great Gatsby style, the rockabilly 1950s, the boogie-oogie 1970s, and a classic Victorian 1890s London reminiscent of Charles Dickens, and is accompanied by beautiful holiday music from each period. To keep the clock ticking, Lucy Darling uses all her skills with jaw-dropping tricks and amazing feats of illusion, including a levitation that requires a bit of audience participation.

REVIEW: The Nutcracker by The Joffrey Ballet At Lyric Opera House December 3 – 27, 2022

ChiIL Mama’s ChiIL Picks List

The Nutcracker by The Joffrey Ballet

At Lyric Opera House

The Joffrey Ballet, The Nutcracker

Review

by Catherine Hellmann, Guest Critic

“Everything is beautiful at the ballet,” goes the dreamy song from A Chorus Line, and that sentiment certainly applies to the Joffrey Ballet’s annual holiday production of The Nutcracker. The setting has a wonderful Chicago twist by occurring among the excitement of the World’s Columbian Exposition of 1893. The background depicts the world’s first Ferris Wheel and the Statue of the Republic by Daniel Chester French. (a smaller replica of “the Golden Lady” stands at a traffic circle in Jackson Park--unless construction of the Obama Presidential Library has forced its temporary removal.)

Of course, the marvelous music by Tchaikovsky, played by the Lyric Opera Orchestra, remains. The dancing and choreography are, as expected, fabulous and inventive. Brian Selznick, the talented children’s author/illustrator, designed the story. The costumes and masks by Julian Crouch are wonderful. I loved the couples who had the men’s top hats and their vests matching their partner’s sashes at their waists. Adding to the magic are the Projection Designs by 59 Productions.

The Joffrey Ballet, The Nutcracker

Clara has been changed to Marie, and her mother is a sculptress designing the famous “Golden Lady,” a neat feminist touch. They live in a rather primitive log cabin, where their sad little Christmas tree resembles a Charlie Brown tree, (Or as our brother Marty so eloquently phrased it, “Known by its Latin name,’Charlius Brownius,’” due to the ugly trees our father procured every year.)

A very cute little girl sitting behind us offered an adorable commentary about the plot. “They’re playing games!” explained her grandma about the children at Marie’s cabin. When the bratty brother Franz breaks the Nutcracker gift (some things never change), our little friend blurted,”He broke it! She’s crying!” Then, The Great Impresario (with an awesome red cape he swept around to lovely theatrical  effect) “fixed it!” The gift was hidden in a cabinet, and it was  revealed. “The Nutcracker was in there! I knew it!” blurted our young theater goer.

The scene with the rats was creepy, like being in our Chicago alley. (Another peculiar, perhaps unintended, reference to our beloved city…) I especially liked when the Rat King was stabbed and then dramatically hoisted off, twitching to the end, by his followers.

Grandma behind us explained, ”The Nutcracker is a prince. They are falling in love!” (“I liked seeing the men’s butts!” declared my sister, with brutal, contrasting honesty about the pas de deux.) A gondola boat, resembling the ones from the Great Basin at the 1893 Fair, carries Marie and her prince away. There are projections of the German House, Moorish Palace, and Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Show to remind us of the Chicago location. In fact, one of the traditional Nutcracker dance numbers was now performed by “Buffalo Bill” with his lasso and three rowdy cowgirls. (The real Buffalo Bill had the last laugh at the 1893 Fair. Refused admittance by the officials at the Fair, Buffalo Bill set up camp outside the fairgrounds, charged 50 cents to get in, same as Fair admission fee, and made a fortune.)

One of the traditional dance numbers brought Little Egypt to mind. There was a scandalous belly dancer in 1893 named Little Egypt who performed just outside the fairgrounds. One of the ballet dancers was carried in by her partner and proceeded to perform a sensuous, sexy dance that had everyone riveted. She was amazing. My sister described them as “inspiring” and declared “what poise!”

Our little friend in the row behind us was unhappy by Act II. At two hours, the show was simply too long for her. There was a lot of crying, whimpering, and shushing. “No child under ten should be allowed into this performance,” was my sister’s takeaway announcement.

But that said, please make a family tradition of seeing Joffrey Ballet’s fantastic production of The Nutcracker. Get your mandatory photos in the lobby. You will make extraordinary memories.

THE JOFFREY BALLET CELEBRATES THE HOLIDAYS
WITH RETURN OF CHRISTOPHER WHEELDON’S CHICAGO-SET
THE NUTCRACKER

The critically-acclaimed holiday classic highlighting Chicago’s famous World’s Fair of 1893 returns for 25 performances,

December 3 – 27, 2022

The Joffrey Ballet’s critically-acclaimed reimagined classic, The Nutcracker by Tony Award®-winning choreographer Christopher Wheeldon, returns to the Lyric Opera House, 20 North Upper Wacker Drive, in 25 performances, December 3 – 27, 2022. Set in Chicago’s World’s Fair in 1893, Wheeldon’s The Nutcracker highlights the rich cultural heritage of Chicago and the wonder of the season.

“This glorious production only gets better with time,” said Ashley Wheater, The Mary B. Galvin Artistic Director. “Now, six years since its debut, the holiday magic of the Joffrey’s version of The Nutcracker is perhaps more poignant than ever, a story of family and adventure. But more than anything, it is an homage to a city we cherish so much, and we look forward to celebrating another incomparable holiday season in Chicago once more.”

“I have many fond memories of watching The Nutcracker throughout my life, and even now, dozens upon dozens of viewings later,” Greg Cameron, President and CEO, added. “What I love most is that no matter how many times I see it, the spectacle and sheer wonderment still feels new. The Nutcracker has a way of reaching people, and we are most proud and fortunate that the Joffrey’s version continues to be a point of pride and joy for Chicagoans year after year.”

Wheeldon’s American tale relocates Marie and her immigrant family to the Chicago World’s Fair in 1893, and opens as young Marie and her mother, a sculptress creating the Fair’s iconic Statue of the Republic, host a festive Christmas Eve celebration. After a surprise visit from the creator of the Fair, the mysterious Great Impresario, Marie embarks on a whirlwind adventure with the Nutcracker Prince through a dreamlike World’s Fair.

A ballet in two acts set to Tchaikovsky’s classic score, The Nutcracker features an award-winning creative team, including Tony Award®-nominated set and costume designer Julian Crouch, Caldecott Medal Award-winning author Brian Selznick, Obie and Drama Desk award-winning puppeteer Basil Twist, Tony Award®-winning lighting designer Natasha Katz and Tony Award®-winning projection designer
Ben Pearcy/59 Productions. The production was adapted in 2021 by Wheeldon to fit the larger Lyric Opera stage.

The Nutcracker features live music performed by the Lyric Opera Orchestra, conducted by Scott Speck, Music Director of The Joffrey Ballet.

For the third year in partnership with Chicago’s Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events, signature scenes from the production will be projected on the world’s largest canvas, Art on theMart. The digital art projection, designed by local production studio The Mill with music arranged by Joffrey Assistant Conductor & Company Pianist Michael Moricz, will be displayed on theMART’s 2.5 acre river-façade. It can be viewed nightly for free from the ‘Jetty’ section of the Chicago Riverwalk on Wacker Drive between Wells Street and Franklin Street November 19 – December 30, 2022, in two airings, at 7:30 and 8:00 p.m. More information can be found at artonthemart.com/programming

Guest Review

By Kimberly Robb Baker

If you’re looking to make lasting memories this holiday season, grab some tickets to the Sparkle Light Festival at Impact Field in Rosemont. It’s truly a taste of the North Pole right here in Chicagoland.

Our party of four ranged in age from 7 to 47, and a magical time was had by all. Of course, the stars of the show are the millions of lights that make up the many holiday scenes. This experience is perfect for family photos you’ll treasure forever with sparkling features including horse-drawn carriages, a giant Christmas tree, ornaments you can explore from the inside, a gorgeous tunnel of lights and many, many more. The light decorations cover most of the field with plenty of open space for kids of all ages to explore.

The two-story ice slide was also a favorite of our group. We were delighted to get endless rounds of sledding in—especially since our all-inclusive tickets covered hot drinks and a very tasty buffet at Rivers Stadium Club onsite, looking out across the lights. The kids loved the mac-n-cheese, hotdogs, bottomless hot chocolate and tasty desserts. After warming up and refueling, we returned to the field for more sledding and a few rides on the Holly Trolly train.

Adding greatly to our experience was the absolutely fantastic staff. From ticket takers to ride operators to the catering team, every interaction was full of warmth. My twelve-year-old said the staff reminded her of “those friendly neighbors in old Christmas movies.”

The kids went to bed with full bellies and happily exhausted. We’ll definitely be back again!
