Navy Pier to Host Free Overnight Slumber Party in Crystal Gardens on May 17

Chicago’s popular lakefront destination invites youth and their chaperones for fun overnight festivities, including rides, arts and crafts, music, dancing, movies, yoga and breakfast in the Crystal Gardens

Pajama party at Navy Pier! Throw on your finest PJs, grab your sleeping bag and head over to Chicago’s iconic lakefront destination on Friday, May 17 for the first-ever Palm Tree Pajama Party, an overnight family-friendly event featuring a full evening of activities culminating in a unique sleepover experience under the twinkling lights and palm trees in the botanical setting of the Pier’s glass-enclosed Crystal Gardens. The party kicks off with check-in at 5:30 p.m. and extends through the next morning with activities concluding at 8:30 a.m.

While tickets to the Palm Tree Pajama Party are free, guests must register online in advance via Eventbrite. A limited number of tickets are available on a first-come, first-serve basis. All tickets include one discounted parking pass per party, complimentary access to Pier Park rides and attractions, free participation in all activities within the Crystal Gardens, discounted meals at participating Pier-wide restaurants and a complimentary continental breakfast the next morning.

As part of the festivities, guests are welcome to ride the Pier’s popular attractions in Pier Park – including the iconic Centennial Wheel – create fun artwork to take home, jam to popular dance tunes, catch the 2018 animated film, Ralph Breaks the Internet, enjoy light snacks and beverages, and kick off the next day with a family yoga class, followed by breakfast. PJs are welcome and encouraged for all activities.

The Palm Tree Pajama Party is open to youth ages 6 to 12, accompanied by chaperones over the age of 21. There must be at least one chaperone per up to three children, and chaperones must be with the children in their respective parties at all times. Event participants must also sign a waiver form and present it at check-in upon arrival, or scan and e-mail it to pjsandpalmtrees@navypier.org in advance. Click here to download the waiver form.

HAMILTON: THE EXHIBITION World Premiere Opening April 27th

HAMILTON: THE EXHIBITION

I'll be out for the press opening and ribbon cutting this Friday, so check back soon for my photo recap and review. Hamilton: The Exhibition will make its world premiere in Chicago on April 27, 2019.  Hamilton: The Exhibition takes visitors deeper into the life and times of Alexander Hamilton, while at the same time chronicling the American Revolution and the creation of the United States of America.  From the post in St. Croix where teenager Alexander became an indispensable trader, to the hilltop in Weehawken, NJ where Burr fatally shot Hamilton in their infamous duel, Hamilton: The Exhibition seeks to elucidate the powerful experience of building our country and shaping our Democracy.



The exhibition features an audio tour narrated by the musical’s author, Lin-Manuel Miranda, along with Phillipa Soo and Christopher Jackson, who played Eliza Schuyler Hamilton and George Washington in the original Broadway production of Hamilton. Joanne B. Freeman, historical advisor and Professor of History and American Studies at Yale University, also narrates. The Spanish language translations are narrated by Olga Merediz, who originated the role of Abuela Claudia in the Broadway production of In The Heights.

With a dynamic and interactive mix of lighting, sound, multimedia, music and historical artifacts, you will experience how it felt to write the way Hamilton wrote, fight the way Hamilton fought, and live the way Hamilton lived.  Discover how his work as a trader in St. Croix gave him the skills to create our country’s financial system. Gaze upon the streets of New York with detailed replicas of the city in 1776. Step into George Washington’s war tent as you learn how the Revolutionary Army planned their shocking victory in the Battle of Yorktown.

Hamilton: The Exhibition posits new questions about Hamilton’s life and the founding of America, ultimately leaving us to ask the question — how can we leave our own legacies for future Americans?

Drury Lane Theatre announces casting for its Regional Premiere of Roald Dahl’s Matilda The Musical, featuring Chicago resident Audrey Edwards and Warrenville native Natalie Galla sharing the title role. With book by Dennis Kelly, music and lyrics by Tim Minchin, and orchestrations and additional music by Chris Nightingale, Roald Dahl’s Matilda The Musical is directed and choreographed by Mitch Sebastian and runs April 26 – June 23, 2019, at Drury Lane Theatre, 100 Drury Lane in Oakbrook Terrace. 

Based on the beloved novel, Roald Dahl’s Matilda the Musical tells the tale of a precocious 5-year-old girl with exceptional  talents. Facing a family that does not appreciate her and a headmistress who does not appreciate any child, bookworm Matilda befriends her teacher, Miss Honey, who recognizes and appreciates Matilda’s extraordinary personality. The school’s headmistress, Miss Trunchbull believes children should be seen and not heard, and  views Matilda as a rule breaker – and Trunchbull just loves thinking up new punishments for those who break the rules. Armed with her powers and wise beyond her years, Matilda is more than ready to end Trunchbull’s reign of terror. Tied for the most Olivier Awards in history, including Best New Musical, Roald Dahl's Matilda the Musical won five Tony Awards, including Best Book of a Musical.

The cast of Roald Dahl’s Matilda The Musical includes Audrey Edwards and Natalie Galla in the title role of “Matilda” as well as Eben K. Logan (Miss Honey), Sean Fortunato (Miss Trunchbull),  Jackson Evans (Mr. Wormwood), Stephanie Gibson (Mrs. Wormwood), and Linda Bright Clay (Mrs. Phelps). The ensemble of children includes Nathaniel Buescher, Saige Chaseley, Andrea Crisp, Anna Fox, Carter Graf, Nolan Maddox, Patrick Scott McDermott, Bailey Mosbacher, Lilliana Rene Renteria, Ava Tommasone, and Joshua Zingerman. The adult ensemble includes Alex Benoit, Lydia Burke, Andrea Collier, Lexis Danca, Evan C. Dolan, Annie Jo Ermel, Austin Ryan Hunt, Paul-Jordan Jansen, Andrew MacNaughton, Liam Quealy, and Casey Sanders.

The creative team includes Roberta Duchak (Music Director), Jeffrey D. About the Artists


AUDREY EDWARDS (Matilda) is making her Drury Lane debut. Previous theater credits include The Wizard of Oz (Paramount Theatre), The Audience (TimeLine Theatre), The Year I Didn’t Go to School (Chicago Children’s Theatre), Best Christmas Pageant Ever (Provision Theater), Seussical (Beverly Theatre Guild), and Mary Poppins (The Drama Group), and she has various commercial and film credits. Audrey is a sixth grader from Chicago and represented by Paonessa Talent.


NATALIE GALLA (Matilda) is making her Drury Lane debut as Matilda. Natalie hails from Warrenville, Illinois, and is in fifth grade at St. Michael School. Her acting coach is Stacey Flaster, and she takes music lessons with Julie Petrando. She is a competitive dancer and avid tumbler.


EBEN K. LOGAN (Miss Honey) is making her Drury debut. Originally from Maryland, Eben was last seen in The Producers at Paramount Theatre and Sweet Charity at Marriott. Past shows include Ragtime, A Christmas Carol, American Idiot, Memphis, and Avenue Q.


SEAN FORTUNATO (Miss Trunchbull) returns to Drury Lane where he played Detective Cioffi in Curtains. Other credits include Malvolio in Twelfth Night, Death of a Streetcar Named Virginia Woolf, The Diary of Anne Frank, Hedda Gabler, Henry in The Real Thing, Aunt Augusta in Travels with my Aunt (Writers Theatre); Joseph in Book of Joseph, King Charles III (Chicago Shakespeare Theater); 2666, Measure for Measure (Goodman Theatre); Emcee in Cabaret (Theatre at the Center); and work at Court Theatre, Northlight Theatre, Timeline Theatre, Marriott Theatre, Remy Bumppo Theatre, About Face Theatre, Old Globe Theatre, CA, Intiman Theatre, WA, The Duke on 42nd, NY, and thirteen seasons with Peninsula Players, WI, where he played George in Sunday in the Park with George. Jumbo Shrimp Cocktail – (4) U-12 Gulf Shrimp, poached, chilled, served over crushed ice, accompanied by cocktail sauce with a dab of prepared horseradish

Baked Goat Cheese – creamy goat cheese baked in house made marinara served with crostini for dipping. a great appetizer for sharing
Escargot en Champignon – a French classic of escargot, mushroom, garlic, and butter this dish is extremely popular and an iconic dish of fine dining
Oysters Rockefeller – (4) Malpeque oysters topped with spinach and mornay sauce. 



Salads
Walnut & Poached Pear Salad – mixed greens, poached pears, walnuts, blue cheese crumbles, raspberry vinaigrette providing a wonderful balance of sweet and savory.  this salad can also be topped with salmon, shrimp, chicken, or steak to make it into more of a meal



Chopped Salad –  crisp iceberg, turkey, avocado, bacon, tomatoes, swiss cheese, red onion, ranch dressing chopped fine make this a refreshing lunch dish

Butcher’s Block all of our steaks are USDA Prime grade, wet aged for 21-28 days, and hand-trimmed in house (we even have our own bone saw)  

Porterhouse –the porterhouse is a steakhouse classic consisting of the sirloin (aka NY Strip) on the long side and the tenderloin that is a minimum of 2” from the bone (the filet side).  Having the bone run through the center of this steak adds flavor as well as joining the best of both steaks in one dish



Slow Roasted Prime Rib – our signature cut is available 7 days a week.  slow roasted, savory, and juicy, this cut is offered in 3 different sizes: sm (12 oz), med (16 oz), and the dbl cut (24 oz).  endcuts are limited, but this cut is served either on or off the bone.  the choice is yours



From the Sea 
Fried Gulf Shrimp – our gulf shrimp prepared butterflied, breaded, and deep fried to a golden brown. Crunchy and sweet served with cocktail sauce on the side

Alaskan Halibut – wild caught Alaskan halibut, coated in crushed macadamia nuts, served with meuniere sauce



Dover Sole – deboned tableside and served amandine. does it get any more classic than this?



Lobster Tail – 7-8 oz African cold-water lobster tail. broiled. served with a drawn butter kept warm by candle while you enjoy.  this is offered as a main course consisting of two tails or you can add a single tail to any entree to create your own surf and turf

Berkshire Pork Chops – our lunch portion is one, dinner two. each bone-in porkchop weighs in at roughly 8 oz and is served with a balsamic glaze



New Zealand Rack of Lamb – a beautiful 8 bone rack of lamb weighing in at approximately 12 oz, cooked to temperature, and cut into four double chops.
