Grammy-Winning Folk & Roots Music for Families!

♪ Five-time Parents’ Choice Award Winners

♪ The American Library Association’s Notable Children’s Recording Award

♪ The Grammy Award for Best Children’s Music Album

Justin Lansing and Joe Mailander have been exploring the outdoors together since they were kids. Now, as the Grammy-winning Okee Dokee Brothers, they write songs to encourage kids and families to get outside and get creative. Their brand-new album Winterland (2018), is a tribute to the season of coziness, family time and outdoor fun! This cold-weather project is the follow-up to their wildly popular Adventure Album trilogy which was inspired by their extended canoe trip down the Mississippi River (Can You Canoe?), their month-long trek along the Appalachian Trail (Through The Woods) and a joyous horseback adventure through the American West (Saddle Up).

As we weather the storm by looking inward, we can redefine our seasonal perspectives. In fact, with just the right outlook, winter can become our own sense of paradise, even through the warm months. Join The Okee Dokee Brothers as they welcome you to experience a refreshing, wide-eyed view of the most exciting time of year with their music from Winterland.

In a world where people are all too often pursuing their own individual journeys, Winterland humbly reminds us that we are all human beings living within the uncontrollable motions of Mother Nature. Embracing the cycles of loss and new life, darkness and light, bitter cold and warmth, Winterland reflects that winter is not only a season, but a feeling we carry within.

With songs written under wide-open skies and harmonies fine-tuned around the campfire, the natural world is at the heart of their Americana folk music. The Okee Dokee Brothers make room for kids to dance, for parents to share stories, and for everyone to gain respect for nature, each other, and the world we live in.

“[The Okee Dokee Brothers] remind us of the American belief that we’re bound for better weather. Their album [Can You Canoe?] celebrates everyday explorers, young and old, who rediscover that notion daily.”
—All Things Considered, NPR

“The lyrics are playful, engaging and subtly filled with life lessons. These are songs that encourage kids to find happiness with fewer material possessions and embrace adventure even in trying situations.”
—Chicago Tribune

“Want to get away from the city? Check out these tunes.”
—The Washington Post

REVIEW: Sesame Street Live: Make Your Magic at The Chicago Theatre

ChiIL Mama's Chi, IL Picks List:
Family Friendly Theatre Fun

 Guest Review
by kimberly robb baker

Sesame Street Live: Make Your Magic surprised me by entertaining all my kids—toddler to tween!

We all enjoyed meeting one of the Muppets pre-show at a sweet little puppet theatre in the lobby. The storyline, Elmo struggling to learn a magic trick to perform with Justin The Magician in front of all of his Sesame street friends, was engaging.

Of course, the little ones who love Sesame Street are simply thrilled to see their favorite characters in real life. There was lots of audience interaction and opportunities to stand up and move, incorporating the inevitable wiggles into the show. My tween appreciated the rap and dance and was keeping count of how many Fortnight moves were incorporated.

Creative lighting, sets, and puppetry brought the story to life and delighted all in attendance. We particularly enjoyed the cookie-baking scene, in which Cookie and his cohort run a cookie truck, and one in which Abby and Elmo’s patience is rewarded by seeing butterflies come out of their cocoon (nice psychedelic puppetry there!).

The message of perseverance—and the “power of yet”—leaves the whole family entertained and inspired with an important life lesson.

ChiIL Mama’s Chi, IL Picks List

ChiIL Mama will be there... will you?! I'm sending one of my fabulous freelancers, Kim, and her family to review for you. Don't miss this two day only chance to catch your favorite Sesame Street pals Elmo, Abby Cadabby, Big Bird and more right here in Chi, IL.

Everyone’s invited on an amazing journey with Elmo to discover the “power of yet” in Sesame Street Live! Make Your Magic. Featuring favorite Sesame Street pals Elmo, Abby Cadabby, Big Bird and more in a brand-new, magical adventure live on stage. Sesame Street Live! Make Your Magic will visit Chicago on Saturday, Feb. 9, and Sunday, Feb. 10, for six performances at The Chicago Theatre. Sesame Street Live! Make Your Magic is produced by family entertainment giant, Feld Entertainment, in partnership with the non-profit educational organization Sesame Workshop.

Elmo is inspired to learn a magic trick when he meets magician extraordinaire Justin, who has come to Sesame Street to perform a magic show. But there’s one problem…Elmo doesn’t know how to do magic! Through Justin’s encouragement to practice, work hard and never give up, Elmo embarks on an extraordinary journey. He learns that it’s okay to make mistakes and that magic can be found anywhere when you believe in yourself and the power of what’s yet to be.

Cookie Monster and Gonger uncover the science and fun of baking while Abby Cadabby experiences the transformative abilities of caterpillars. Big Bird learns about the magnifying magic of shadow puppetry while Rosita orchestrates a rhythmic beat using everyday objects around her. And artist Grover mixes up the pigment power of the three primary colors. With high-energy dance numbers and a soundtrack that’s sure to get everyone out of their seats, Sesame Street Live! Make Your Magic is an inspirational introduction to live theater and the art of illusion that the entire family will enjoy.

Tickets for Sesame Street Live! Make Your Magic start at $15 and can be purchased online at www.msg.com/chicagotheatre, Ticketmaster at 1-800-745-3000 or The Chicago Theatre box office. Accessible and companion seats are available via the Disabled Services Department at 1-888-609-7599.

PHOTO RECAP: The Chicago Auto Show and 3rd Annual What Drives Her Luncheon

ChiIL Mama's Adventures at the
2019 Chicago Auto Show
and 3rd Annual
"What Drives Her"
Luncheon and Networking Event

All Photos by Bonnie Kenaz-Mara

I've been attending The Chicago Auto Show since the early 90's and covering it during the media preview days for a decade. 2019 was no exception. I was pleased to partner up again with the Chicago Auto Show organizers, A Girls Guide to Cars, and Women in Automotive on coverage. One highlight was the What Drives Her luncheon and networking event during the show's Media Preview on Friday, Feb. 8 at McCormick Place. I covered the first two What Drives Her events as well, and they've always been informative and inspiring.

Check out live streams and photo recaps on social media from the What Drives Her luncheon & panel by searching the event hashtag #WDH2019. I was live streaming and covering the event on social media in real time with a host of other top bloggers.

The overarching theme this year focused on the major shifts that are taking place in the automotive industry, including the ways that women are shaping its evolution.

"General Motors CEO Mary Barra is often quoted as saying the auto industry will see more change in the next five years than the last 50," said Autotrader Executive Analyst Michelle Krebs. "Whether it is five years or more, the shift towards electric and autonomous vehicles as well as new ways to acquire personal transportation is occurring now, generating tremendous opportunities for creative women to reinvent what has been a male-dominated business."

The 2019 What Drives Her event featured a robust lineup of female speakers who discussed the integral role women play within the auto industry as contributors, consumers and drivers of purchasing decisions. It was a pleasure to see so many influential women come together to highlight industry trends and share personal experiences surrounding the impact that females have on the automotive industry.

ChiIL Mama's Photo Recap from the media previews Thursday and Friday are here in the slideshow with favorites embedded below

"Women buy or influence 85 percent of all vehicle purchases and hold the keys to $450 billion in spending each year, yet the biggest challenge is educating them as consumers and users of new technology," said Scotty Reiss, founder of A Girls Guide to Cars. "The most powerful way to change this is by engaging them as employees, leaders and innovators."

Autotrader's Krebs moderated the first panel discussion surrounding how females are driving change in the auto industry. Panelists include Jessica Petty, manager of customer data analytics, Hyundai; Jeneen Rippey, vice president of global quality, electronics division, ZF; and Edie Wines, instructor, National Automobile Dealers Association.

My live stream is below, featuring ANA's female-focused #SeeHer initiative as well as the second panel discussion topic, "Work, Life and Creating Balance While Building a Career".

Live Streamed Above:
Between the first and second panel discussions, Leah Marshall, director, influencer marketing, with the Association of National Advertisers (ANA), presented ANA's female-focused #SeeHer initiative. I found this particularly compelling, as a mother of a 15 year old daughter. Initiatives like this give me hope that the next generation will finally achieve more relatable and positive female centered images in media, and maybe even gender parity and equality

Cars.com Editor-in-Chief Jennifer Newman moderated the panel of women including Kathy Gilbert, global director of sales & business development, CDK; Laurie King, SVP, global operations & strategic solutions, Turtle Wax; Subi Ghosh, senior director of dealer strategy, Stream Companies; Lauren Brandt, Facebook client solutions manager and Returnity Project co-founder; and Kerri Wise, vice president, industry education and relations, TrueCar.

The What Drives Her event continues to be one example of how Chicago Auto Show organizers actively engage the female demographic. Foresight Research reports the Chicago Auto Show has an almost even split of male and female attendees: 45 percent of which are female.

"As the nation's largest consumer auto show, one can argue the Chicago Auto Show is the perfect place to assess trends - not just locally but on a national level as well," said Kelly Webb Roberts, a board member for the Chicago Automobile Trade Association, producer of the Chicago Auto Show. "We're thrilled to continue to host this event to bring together some of the most influential women in the industry who are at the forefront of this change."

Event sponsors include Autotrader, Facebook, Hyundai, Lot Linx, TrueCar, Turtle Wax and ZF.
