Weird-O dolls may have come from inconspicuous beginnings (a small New Hampshire living room), but the colorful products are now on their way to creating a powerful social acceptance and anti-bullying movement.

It’s an all-too common tale – a young child, bullied for wearing glasses and called a “weirdo”. To Edward Fabian, it was what Oprah would call an “aha moment”. That quickly, ‘Weird-O’ dolls were born.

“It was important to me to give the dolls depth – so I made up a background story, which became the book,” says Fabian. “Not only did the little boy and girl love the story, but they loved 4-Eyes, and they were also proud to wear their glasses! I can’t tell you how amazing it felt to hear them say that – it’s so important to let kids know that being different isn’t just acceptable – it’s awesome! After all, it’s what makes us unique. I think the book really hammered that point home and made the kids feel confident in who they were and are.”

Book Synopsis:

Three little friends known as Elephant Ears, Cutie Pie and 4-Eyes end up on an adventure when a Queen named Little Miss Perfect (that has six toes) decides to rid the land of Sublime of anything or anybody that is not perfect. This book is fun but also teaches life lessons with the moral of the story being nobody is perfect and we should not only accept, but appreciate ourselves and others just the way we are. There are also 16 wonderful drawings from an artist with a unique style.

Since the release of the book and the accompanying toys, parents and children have been thrilled with the products and what they represent.

Not content to rest on his laurels, Fabian has many more adventures planned for his cast of characters.

“I have an entire series planned around the dolls – and my goal is spread their message to as many children as possible,” says Fabian. “I’ve seen the positive impact the first book has had in kids’ lives, and since we’re living in a world where social acceptance is needed more than ever, I think the book and dolls could play a major part in changing how we view diversity.”

Continuing: “There are too many kids feeling bad about themselves because of bullies – especially with the prevalence of the Internet. With my stories and plushies I can make being different cool. It’s so important for a child to have self-worth and feel positive about who they see when they look in the mirror. Something that simple can change their childhood.”

Like many great products, an unintended purpose has happened with the plush dolls. Because the hole in the middle, they make for incredibly comfortable pillows. Keep Calm and Carry…Out? Spencer’s Jolly Posh Foods, known for the finest selection of imported British and Irish foods in Chicago, is moving to the Southport Corridor! In May 2014, expat owner Nick Spencer is taking his concept down the street from its original location (1405 Irving Park Road) and opening the doors to a new, larger space catering to expats, anglophiles and Brit-obsessed Chicagoans alike! Located at 3755 N. Southport, the 1400 sq-ft space will offer a 35 plus-seat dining room, larger grocery area, expanded restaurant menu and an outdoor patio…fancy that?

Relocated to the heart of the Southport Corridor, Spencer’s Jolly Posh Foods is a restaurant & grocery. During the week, the restaurant serves lunch, afternoon tea and dinner, along with beer, wine and liquor. A “proper breakfast” (aka brunch for those who don’t speak Brit) will also be served on the weekend. Specializing in all of the flavors of Britain and Ireland, the grocery carries everything from biscuits, chocolates and sweets to cheese, condiments, jams and teas. Owner Nick Spencer also prepares traditional items in-house including homemade meats.

"It's an exciting move for our business. We've been on Irving Park for two years and been able to really test our concept,” says Spencer. “When we move to the new location on Southport, we’ll offer a vastly expanded menu and be open for dinner during the week (and breakfast on the weekends); our seating capacity expands to 35 seats with another 18 seats outdoors; our grocery selection will be larger; and parking is easier. Everything we've been dreaming about will become a reality at our new location!”

The menu will feature British classics such as fish & chips, bangers (sausages) & mash, sausage & bacon butties (sandwiches), civilized sandwiches and of course, proper afternoon tea. A combination of fish & chip shop, tearoom, grocery store and restaurant, the interior design reflects a variety of concepts joined together under one roof.  Filled with a bit of old-school British charm, the modern space features hints of traditional plaids and tweeds including a front door in “telephone box red” to greet guests. The grocery area, similar to a 1930’s corner store, displays a variety of packaged and refrigerated items, tucked in the corner for guests to peruse after dining. Clad with richly colored walls and exposed brick, the flowing design is cozy, unpretentious and offers up a hint of British wit.

Broadway In Chicago and Erth Visual & Physical, Inc., in association with Red Tail Entertainment, ArKtype and East Bank Entertainment are pleased to announce that Erth’s DINOSAUR ZOO Live™ opens TONIGHT.  Created in Australia, the immensely popular international theatre attraction will play the Broadway Playhouse at Water Tower Place (175 E Chestnut) for a limited engagement March 25 – 30, 2014.

Erth’s DINOSAUR ZOO Live™ is an experiential theatre production which takes audiences on a prehistoric journey into a new dimension where they get to meet a menagerie of insects, mammals and dinosaurs that once roamed the planet millions of years ago.  Featuring a large-scale cast of dinosaur puppets brought to life by sophisticated design and theatrical presentation and puppet mastery, these life-like dinosaur recreations connect children to paleontology in a fun and informative setting.  This monster production will feature sixteen dinosaurs on stage:  Children can watch and learn, but can also interact with the creatures in this fun, educational and unique presentation.

Erth’s DINOSAUR ZOO Live™ is the creation of one of Australia’s most innovative and creative companies, Erth Visual & Physical, Inc., who bring the impossible to life.  For over 21 years, the company has developed a truly fantastic aesthetic and an extraordinary box of tricks, which now serve as the foundations of its unique visual and physical theatre work. Their work ranges from large-scale interactive environments such as ‘The Garden’, a prehistoric landscape inhabited by giant insects which premiered at the Melbourne International Festival of Arts, to more intimate in-theatre work and roving spectaculars.  The company regularly tours internationally and more than a million people have seen its dinosaurs in museums, and in performance works such as Radio Lab’s Apocalyptical,  Dinosaur Petting Zoo™ and DINOSAUR ZOO Live™

 Erth’s DINOSAUR ZOO Live™ is directed by Scott Wright the co-founder of Erth Visual and Physical Inc. and its Artistic Director since inception in 1990.  He trained as a dancer and choreographer in Victoria, Australia and is a multi-skilled artist incorporating puppetry (one of his greatest loves), movement, acting, aerial, stilts and pyrotechnics.  During this period, Scott steered the company through many twists and turns, creating a successful national and international touring profile.  Scott has directed most of Erth’s successful touring shows, and worked with a large variety of national and international companies and institutions, individual artists and community groups. Scott is currently focusing on the survival of indigenous folklore, exploring how ancient stories can be retrieved and presented to new audiences.  This exploration takes him to remote communities throughout Australia, to meet with elders, learning and developing methods in which puppetry can tell stories of ancient creatures and landscapes.

The dinosaurs and other creature puppets, as well as the flora and fauna that make up the set are designed by Steve Howarth, a founding and fulltime member of Erth. From the Erth studio workshop he supervises a team of artists in the creation of the puppets, sets, props, costumes and associated elements that constantly tour the nation and the globe. In this principle role he has worked with a wide variety of people and organizations, and across numerous media over the past twenty years.  The first 15 years were spent performing in, on, and dangling from, many of the creations that he now devotes his full time to building.  Now off stage, he oversees the daily production of giant, teeth-gnashing dinosaurs and inflatable monsters that live alongside traditional fine arts and textiles work, and increasingly, he is incorporating new disciplines such as digital animation.  Steve recently directed his first work Taniwha! for Auckland Museum in New Zealand, where he worked closely with indigenous storytellers weaving together threads of Maori folklore which was then presented by live actors, puppets, and projection. Steve also mentors design students from several tertiary institutions and assists emerging artists in the implementation of their respective crafts.

The North American tour of Erth’s DINOSAUR ZOO Live™ is produced by Red Tail Entertainment, ArKtype and East Bank Entertainment.  The production team is rounded out by Sharon Kerr, Executive Director at Erth Visual & Physical, and Anna Young, General Manager at Erth Visual & Physical.  Erth’s Technical Manager Phil Downing designed the sound, lighting and video.

The company of DINOSAUR ZOO Live™ will be lead on stage by ‘Host’ Aimee Louisanne.  Kelley Selznick serves as a dinosaur wrangler and puppeteer, Hallie Goodman and Anthony Orefice serve as dinosaur wranglers and puppeteers who also operate the large ‘Hero’ puppets.  Jackson Eather serves as the show’s Swing performer.
