Dickens' Women #Review #ChicagoShakespeare @DickensWomen

Miriam Margolyes is a talented character actor and a colorful character in her own right.   Her mannerisms, facial expressions, and characterizations truly bring Dickens' women off the pages and into our imaginations in all their quirky glory.   She is a master at her craft and a true joy to see in action, as she shades and nuances Dickens' characters, who still live on 200 years after his birth.   We also adored her running commentary and backstory on the real life women who inspired Dickens fictional females.   From dwarf hairdressers to debutants and victorian cougars, Margolyes' characters and hilarious, heartfelt and entirely endearing.



Her final show is tonight, December 22, at 8pm and we highly recommend you catch it.   This is not just her final show in Chicago, but the last time she'll be performing this show for the foreseeable future.   If you just can't swing it, she has written the script in book form with extra goodies like photographs and characters she had to cut from the show.   Check it out here.

ChiIL Mama is an ardent supporter of theatre and Chicago Shakespeare Theater is one of Chi-town's best.  We gave away tickets and covered the CST/CCM collaboration, Witches, Wizards, Spells and Elves: The Magic of Shakespeare last year and were quite impressed.   The same composer, Bruce Adolphe, is back again this year with a production that's sure to delight.   Introduce your kids to culture in an entertaining way that's fun for all ages.     

Chicago Shakespeare Theater (CST) collaborates with The Chicago Chamber Musicians (CCM) for the 11th annual family concert, presenting the Chicago premiere of Leave it to Ludwig by Bruce Adolphe, Saturday, January 19 and Sunday, January 20, 2013 at 10 and 11:30 a.m. at Chicago Shakespeare Theater on Navy Pier. The one-hour concert will introduce families and children ages four and up to the joys of live performance, featuring music performed by CCM ensemble members.

Leave it to Ludwig premiered at the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center in 2010 and comes to Chicago Shakespeare Theater this January for its Chicago premiere. Leave it to Ludwig tells the tale of Ludwig van Beethoven, who magically appears to help a young pianist master the composer’s music, while excerpts from some of his most beloved works are performed by CCM ensemble members. Composer Bruce Adolphe will portray the title character and Northwestern University Associate Professor of Piano James F. Giles will play the young pianist.

Chicago Shakespeare’s previous work with Adolphe includes Witches, Wizards, Spells and Elves: The Magic of Shakespeare, which was co-commissioned by CST and CCM in 2002 for the annual family series programming. 

CCM previously featured Adolphe in their Composer Perspectives series in 2006 and collaborated with the composer for Tyrannosaurus Sue: A Cretaceous Concerto, part of CCM’s Family Concert at the time of the dinosaur’s unveiling at the Field Museum in 2000.

CCM Ensemble members Joseph Genualdi, violin and Rami Solomonow, viola will perform at the January concerts, along with guest artists Mathias Tacke, violin; Cheng-Hou Lee, cello; and James F. Giles, piano. Between concerts each day, interactive exhibits staged in the CST lobby will give children a chance to explore the instruments used in the concert. Musicians will be available for autographs and young performers will demonstrate their craft and answer questions about the featured instruments.

Performances of Leave it to Ludwig run Saturday, January 19 and Sunday, January 20, 2013 in CST’s Courtyard Theater at 10 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. each day. Reading is rewarding

Chi-town's libraries are rocking winter break with a challenge. Just because school's out, that doesn't mean your brain is on vacation!  Kids ages 3-18 are invited to participate in The Winter Learning Program by completing 1 activity from each of 4 categories (Read: read for 20 minutes a day for a total of 5 days; Learn: do 1 activity or experiment; Discover: learn 1 new fact about winter; and Create: write a story or make a piece of art inspired by snow). 

Their website has some activity suggestions but kids are welcome to find their own too! After completing the activities, the students will complete the log and return it to their neighborhood library.

Forms are available in the branches too. The program takes place December 17, 2012 - January 7, 2013. WHAT WE'RE WATCHING: LOGAN THEATRE

You Write The Rules With The Harlem Globetrotters #GlobieFamily

This year we're super stoked to be able to see The Harlem Globetrotters in Cincinnati with my parents on December 29th, as part of the Globetrotters' new affiliate program.   The Harlem Globetrotters will be rockin' the midwest next week, including Allstate Arena in Chicago on Friday, December 28th for all our ChiIL Chi, IL families out there.

For us, the holidays are family time.  Our kids are off school for an extended break from December 15th through January 7th, so we spend loads of time together and make it to see two sets of grandparents and extended family.  With such a long winter break from our school and work routines, we're especially on the lookout for fun activities to do together.  

I have fond memories of seeing The Harlem Globetrotters with my grandparents and parents back in the 70's, during my own childhood, and can't wait to recreate the experience with my own kids.   I was also pretty jazzed to just learn this week that the father of a long time blogger friend of mine was actually a Harlem Globetrotter back in the 50's!   My dad and my husband's dad were both accountants, and since they never juggled the books, let alone basketballs, having an Ex-Globetrotter Dad seems exotic and fun to me. 

We're an active family who loves to go to theatre, see live music, and travel.  We particularly love to laugh together.   My kids are avid circus arts fans and have been taking classes and performing for two years with CircEsteem.   They've both studied juggling, acro and clowning, so I know they'll enjoy seeing those elements merged into basketball by the infamous Globetrotters.
