Video Interview: Playwright, Brett Neveu & Band Members of The Noses and This Magazine Is Haunted
We're All Punk Parents: Interview With Playwright Brett Neveu and Band Members of The Noses and This Magazine Is Haunted from ChiIL Mama on Vimeo.
We talked to 4 rockin' musicians who also happen to be somebody's parents. Our interview includes a few dads and 1 kick ass punk mama, Ellen, who sings, plays a wicked bass, and can still spout a plume of Pabst Blue Ribbon on stage, with the best of 'em.
Hear them expound on how parenting littles has changed their writing tempo and their lives, what the kids think of The Sex Pistols, and Ellen's brilliantly snarky, kittencentric rant about parenting philosophy, full of chunks of wisdom like "we're all assholes and little Buddhas at the same time."

Thanks for checkin' out our very first Vimeo video, on the brand spankin' new ChiIL Mama Channel. We now have 48 original videos on The ChiIL Mama Channel on YouTube, so we're expanding our horizons.
We'll be featuring a whole series of interviews with interesting musicians including adult band members who have children, those playing indie kids (or kindie) music for families, and band members who are kids. We also have live, concert footage of most of the bands and often run tie ins with free CDs (nationwide) and free concert tickets in the Chicago area. So check in like we vote in Chicago....early and often. Enjoy!

Finding the polling place.....not as easy as you might think.
I'm a Firm believer in voting. Even if your candidate is not the
Front runner. Too many people Fought too hard for the right to vote, for me to turn down the chance lightly. Plus, even if your First choice doesn't win, you've Fought the good Fight, and done what you could. If you don't vote, you Forgo all rights to complain about politics and policy!

First new Chicago mayor in over 20 years!
Finding the polling place.....not as easy as you might think.
- Last election, we were in the bank on the corner--torn down to build condos
- Before that, it was the furniture store on Milwaukee Ave.--out of business & locked up
- Back in the day, I even got to vote inside a firehouse, where the alarm rang, the firemen mobilized, and the trucks rolled out--lights flashing, all while I was voting. It was more excitement than usual.
- This time, we were in a small, used car dealership. Hopefully it won't succumb to "the curse of the polling place" and will still be around next election!

Playwright, Brett Neveu In His Punk Rock Persona & The Earl Extended Through March 2nd
ChiIL Mama got to see current theatre triple threat playwright, Brett Neveu, play Beat Kitchen with his L.A. band, The Noses, at the end of January. The show was so much fun! We have an exclusive interview with band members, three out of four of whom are parents to small children that will post this week.
"We're all punk parents." These were surprising words from award winning playwright, Brett Neveu, who wrote The House Theatre's premier of Odradek, now playing at The Chopin Theatre. I review a lot of local theatre, and sometimes when I say that I write a punk-parenting blog, people look a bit confused or condescending. At the after party on opening night, I walked up mid sentence as Brett was talking about his band from LA. When he heard about the premise of ChiIL Mama instead of looking quizzical, he said, "Cool. We're all punk parents."
We proceeded to hook up with Beat Kitchen to give our readers a pair of tickets to The Noses show, and to catch up with the band for a great chat about how creatives parent and how parents create.

The Noses Facebook page says: Culled from such bands as Rustbucket, Love Kit, Dad Factory and M.O.T.O, this damn rocking quartet will rock your body rock!
Members:
Tim Ford - Drums, Ellen Phillips - Bass/Vocals, Eddie Jemison - Guitar/Vocals, Brett Neveu - Vocals
We talked to a mix of 4 parents who incestuously overlapped in many of the 5 bands above.
They also appeared on the bill with headliners, The Webstirs, who were excellent, and are currently, actively playing out in Chicago (as is This Magazine is Haunted). They were joined by newbies, Wally Dogger, who have some members who work day jobs for Webstirs members. The lead singer said "As a band, it's not often you get to open for your bosses!" We love to see mentoring the next gen. goin' on. Check out their sites for upcoming shows and catch these guys. They're good!
Rumor is The Noses will be recording new material soon in L.A. and can be seen playing out "when Brett's in town".

The Earl
Odradek is playing at The House Theatre in Wicker Park and ends March 5th, and Do The Hustle is playing at Writers' Theatre in Glencoe through March 20th. Click HERE for video scenes from the show and ticket information.
Check out ChiIL Mama's Odradek review HERE and catch it while you can. Odradek is a highly recommended, macabre parents night out. The show is set to close March 5th.
You can explore the complexities of two very different sets of father-son relationships in Brett's writing, presently playing out on the stage in a dark, twisted incarnation at The House Theatre's Odradek, and Brett's other world-premiere, Do The Hustle at Writers' Theatre ( in Glencoe: 325 Tudor Court).
It's a Brett fest! Don't miss your chance for the theatre triple crown, threepeat, trifecta. Get your tickets today.

i ♥ Faces-Phone Photos
As a location sound engineer, my husband has done a number of shoots on the Willis Tower Skydeck. These are little glass floored, glass walled rooms that protrude from the tower formerly known as Sears. Nothing says Chicago, quite like the view from the top of our tallest skyscraper!
This is a chef from Moto, Daryl Nemits, and the photo was taken on a Blackberry, tho we've been jonsin' for iphones and are just biding our time till our contract is up to defect. Click below for more phone photo fun.

Mellow Yellow Monday-Rockin' Chicago Weekend at Beat Kitchen, Congress Theater and Lincoln Hall
The bands were far from mellow, but our favorite way to mellow out over the weekend is to hear live music. Last weekend we began with Little Miss Ann and her folk, rock Wacky Dress Up Dance party at Beat Kitchen at noon on Saturday. Here she is with her 9 year old daughter, Olivia.
Olivia (9) and Little Miss Ann
She'll be back at Beat Kitchen March 13th with Candy Band, a bunch of rockin' punk mamas from Detroit who are another of our kindie favorites. The week before that show, we'll post video interviews with both bands, live concert footage, lots more stills, and a multi CD give away (nationwide).

Neil Fallon, Clutch
and Motorhead (who only gave photo pit passes to two publications in the entire city of Chicago-so we just have some far overviews).

Motorhead
We'll be back at The Congress next weekend for Dropkick Murphys and Naked Raygun. Can't wait!

Econoline and Bobby Conn
Our final show of the weekend was Econoline, a Chicago band formed for the express purpose of covering all 45 songs on Minutemen's Double Nickels on the Dime, paired up with an impressive line up of vocalists. Lincoln Hall was packed with an enthusiastic crowd, for the benefit show for Girls Rock Chicago.
Girls Rock Chicago is a fabulous non profit rock camp for girls ages 8-16. Sagezilla's finally old enough to go this summer. For more details about the show and our past coverage, click HERE and also HERE.
**ChiIL Mama will be reviewing the movie, History Lesson: Part 1 (Punk Rock in Los Angeles in 1984 including The Meat Puppets, Redd Kross, The Minutemen and Twisted Roots) and giving away a copy of the DVD to one luck winner! (nationwide). Details are coming later today.

Minutemen Covered Tonight At Lincoln Hall--Kids Welcome
Take advantage of the 3 day weekend. Kids don't have to get up early for school, Monday, so give 'em a little rock education tonight at Lincoln Hall. All ages are welcome and tickets are just $15 for adults at the door and only $5 for anyone under 17! All proceeds benefit Girls Rock Chicago. Come on out for a great cause and a fun, rockin' evening!
This Sunday, February 20th, for one-night-only, three Chicago-area musicians will be taking on all 45 songs of the Minutemen’s Double Nickels on the Dime LP. The band, Econoline, formed in 2010 with the sole intention of bringing this revered punk classic to life. As this is no small task, they’ve enlisted the help of over a dozen friends, including some of Chicago’s indie and punk rock elite, to get the job done. Joining the band on vocals will be Dianogah front man and poster artist extraordinaire Jay Ryan, Cap’n Jazz/Joan of Arc mastermind Tim Kinsella, fellow suburban punk rocker and Gauge/Haymarket Riot guitarist Kevin J. Frank, avant garde pop-rocker Bobby Conn, Chic-a-Go-Go’s own Miss Mia & Ratso, Golden Horse Ranch band square dance sensation and The 1900s crooner Jeanine O’Toole, garage pop darling and Tyler Jon Tyler front woman Rebecca Flores, now-wave pianist Azita Youssefi and many, many more!
If that’s not enough, Girls Rock! alum and Zombie Masquerade guitarist Ruadhan Ward will be opening the show and joining the band onstage for a few choice Minutemen songs.
Girls Rock! Chicago is grateful to everybody participating, and especially to the band members - drummer Colby Stark, bassist Paul Kelvington, and guitarist Nathaniel Braddock - for selecting our organization as the event’s beneficiary. All proceeds from Sunday’s show will fund scholarships to GR!C’s week long rock and roll summer camps. If you’d like to support the cause, but cannot make it to the show, consider making a “Double Nickels” donation in any amount online.
