Iggy Pop: In The Hands Of The Fans

We've been fans of Iggy Pop for most of our lives, and were so excited that our kids could hear him at Lollapalooza a couple years back.   When we adopted a husky rescue mix in March, the kids even chose to name her Iggy Pup.   I wanna be your dog, indeed!

 

On Friday, September 3rd 2010, Iggy and the Stooges are putting themselves IN THE HANDS OF THE FANS...

MVD Entertainment Group has launched the site www.InTheHandsOfTheFans.com to offer fans a once in a lifetime opportunity to film and interview Iggy and the Stooges performing the seminal punk rock masterpiece RAW POWER at the All Tomorrow's Parties Festival on September 3, 2010. Six lucky fans will be chosen by way of a video submission contest to join director Joey Carey on location at the Stardust Theater at Kutchers' Country Club in Monticello, NY. This marks the reunion between Iggy Pop and powerhouse guitarist James Williamson as well as original Stooges drummer Scott "Rock Action" Asheton. Also featuring Mike Watt on bass and Steve Mackay on saxophone.

The contest is based on fans submitting short high definition video segments asking Iggy and the Stooges interview questions, or demonstrating why they should win the contest. Winners of the contest will film and interview Iggy and the Stooges at All Tomorrow's Parties. This fan shot footage, along with the contestant video submissions, will be crafted into a high definition longform program, which will be part concert film and part reality TV show about the journey of the fans.

"Raw Power is one of the greatest, most dangerous albums in the history of rock and roll" says Ed Seaman, C.O.O. of MVD Entertainment Group.  "We are honored to enable the fans this connection with the band; this will be a dream come true for the winners."

IN THE HANDS OF THE FANS will be sustainable as a series; MVD is already deep in discussions with a number of other artists and expects to have five more programs shot within the next six months with new announcements expected any day.

The final program for Iggy and the Stooges IN THE HANDS OF THE FANS is expected to release on DVD, BluRay, digital download and broadcast by early 2011. All contestants will receive a special offer to purchase the film early along with some exclusive value added content.

Hey, it's that time again.   ChiIL Mama's weekly Kids' Indie (or kindie) music give away.   Candy Band has been one of our favs, since we heard them at Lollapalooza years ago.


Sagezilla and Du-Jay both dug Candy Band's new 2010 release, High Five.   Don't let anyone convince you that candy's not good for you.   This rock candy is a zero calorie treat the whole family will enjoy. 


We got a kick out of Pirate's Life, a ballad about a pirate child who's over it. Among the plethora of pirate wannabe songs, this funny turn about is a real stand out.   The story line's amusingly unexpected and still provides ample opportunities for a good pirate "Aaaarrrrggg." 


Our unanimous favorite off the new CD is a rockin' version of Ode to Joy.   But we also have to agree that Godzilla/Iron Man and It's Raining Green are pretty rockin' amazing, too.


Sagezilla first earned her nickname at the tender age of one, when she used to growl and hurl her big bro's trains and villages across the room.   We used to sing her "Oh no...there goes Tokyo...Sagezilla."   So, this was a hilarious blast from the past, and a rockin' good cover we could really relate to.   This is one disc your punk kin don't wanna miss!


“High Five” is the 5^th release from Candy Band, just out since April 2010.   This time around, they recorded at Rustbelt Studio in Royal Oak, Michigan and enlisted Al Sutton on the boards. Al has worked with everyone from Kid Rock to D-12 and Sponge. 


High Five also features the talents of keyboardist extraordinaire, Luis Resto (Eminem), who also played accordion, melodica, piano and synthesizer. Johnny Badanjek of the Mitch Ryder and The Detroit Wheels and Rockets fame even penned a song called “Termites”. 


This new recording promises to be the best and most interesting of all Candy Band releases. With songs such as Ice Cream, Pirates Life, Sharks, I’m a Monkey and Mom Says No – this is a very diverse CD. They even punked out the classical song “Ode to Joy” complete with German lyrics and a string section!!

BAND BACKGROUND

Born in May of 2003, Candy Band is comprised of 4 Detroit area Mom’s that wanted to create some kids music that had more rock and less whine. With influences like The Ramones and Iggy Pop, they quickly attracted attention from the Wall Street Journal, New York Post, London Times, Blender Magazine, XM Satellite Radio, Women’s Day, USA Today, People Magazine, CBS Early Show and NBC’s Today Show.

Candy Band’s debut self-titled CD is in its fourth pressing and their second CD “More Candy” and 3^rd CD “Lollipunk” have had lots of airplay on kid’s stations across the country (including XM Satellite Radio). They released “Calling All Kids” in January of 2007, and their version of “Down by the Bay” is in heavy rotation on XM Radio and other kids stations across the country such as Spare the Rock, Spoil the Child out of Massachusetts and Greasy Kids Stuff in New York City.

Candy Band continues to build an intense following in the Detroit area and beyond. They’ve played Lollapalooza in Chicago (2005, 2006 and 2007), a Pancake Mountain Dance Party in Washington D.C., the annual Mamapalooza Festival in New York City, the Vans Warped Tour in Detroit (2005 and 2006), and also various libraries, schools, nightclubs and street fairs. They have even performed and recorded with the Detroit Symphony Civic Youth Orchestra and are regular favorites at the Detroit Zoo.

Sagezilla and Du-Jay's Adventures at Raging Waves Water Park

Awesome Aussie Fun

Back in June, we took a trip down under......down under Chicago, that is, and down under raging waves of water at Illinois largest water park.   

 

We got a kick out of the Australian Theme and were impressed with the size and scope of Raging Waves.   Check out their web site for videos, cool special events updates, and an interactive map to plan your visit.

There are an impressive array of water slides for all levels of daring, a cool kids play area, beaches, a lazy river for inner tubing, loads of lounge chairs, and tasty food.

Du-Jay had a blast body surfing and jumping the waves at The Great Barrier Reef.

But half of our jr. review team was on the injured reserve list and had to sit this one out.   Sagezilla took on the roll of designated jr. photographer and created her own fun with a disposable, Raging Waves themed camera.

Since Zilla couldn't get her cast wet and was feeling a little left out, she got to choose a design and get an airbrush tattoo.

While lil sis got inked up, Du-Jay took a relaxing inner tube ride on Kookaburra Creek.

It was pretty quick to get there, too.   Raging Waves is located 45 minutes south west of the Chicago Loop in Yorkville.

Thunder Down Under

Unfortunately, the day turned ominous, and thunder storms and a deluge, caused the park to close till the storms passed, so we headed out early. Now that Sagezilla's cast-free, we can't wait to give Raging Waves another go, on a warmer, storm free day.

Art in the Park Saturday--Unity Lives Up to It's Name

Last Saturday, Du-Jay and I had a blast at "Art in the Park" in Logan Square.   


Unity Park lived up to it's name, uniting artists of all ages, races and abilities in a flurry of color.   

This community endeavor was well attended, despite the beastly heat.   

We arrived at 12:30 and literally got the last two little canvasses available, even though the Art in the Park was slated to last till 3pm.

We also kind of missed out on the free lunch (all that was left was one sad pan of refried beans and a little bit of penne with red sauce).    But I'm thrilled that turn out exceeded expectations, and hope this becomes an annual tradition.  

It was great to paint to live, local music and dance and see so much creative energy going on.

Riot Fest announces the largest punk festival yet, set for October 6-10, 2010 in Chicago.

 Fans should be ready for new announcements of another batch of heavyweight bands in the coming weeks – Riot Fest is by no means done announcing major additions to this hoard of punk stars.


Riot Fest is revered for reuniting classic bands from years past (last year the UK’s Cock Sparrer  electrified audiences in two sold out shows). This year is no exception. Snapcase plays their first show outside their hometown of Buffalo in years, Articles of Faith play with their original line-up for the first time in 25 years, Bhopal Stiffs reunite for one Riot Fest show only, New York crossover giants Cro-mags return and Negative Approach play a rare show. Corrosion of Conformity will return for their first show with the original three-piece “Animosity”-era line up of Mike Dean, Reed Mullin and Woody Weatherman, performing songs from “Animosity” and “Technocracy”.


An extraordinary array of punk bands will take the stages at Congress Theater, Metro, House of Blues, Double Door and Subterranean. There will 17 shows over five venues (not including secret shows), making 5 day passes extraordinarily economical. With more headliners than ever before, Riot Fest saw the need to make traversing the city easier and answered the call – 2010 will find shuttle buses running from Cobra Lounge (there is ample free parking nearby) to each venue and back, where rumor has it that late-night free shows will be going down. A series of official Riot Fest secret shows will be announced via RiotFest.org; they’ll take place undisclosed locations over the summer and fall.


Now in its sixth year, Riot Fest has come a long way in a very short time. When Mike Petryshyn launched Riot Fest in 2005, only two of the bands he really wanted to play agreed to do so. In the first five years, 25,000 fans have attended to see over 200 bands.
