ABC Wednesday: G is for Gymnastics

G is for GYMNASTICS...

Sagezilla and Du-Jay have been taking park district gymnastics classes since they were tumbling tots at the ripe, old age of one.

However, they only began competitive tumbling and gymnastics last December.

(Mayor Daley's Winter Sports Fest)

By February, they had qualified for State in tumbling, where Zilla went on to win a 5th place medal and Du-Jay got a trophy for 3rd.

This spring, a new competition season started and Zilla moved up a level to the tumbling "Novice" division.   She went on to place 2nd in City Wide, in her new, harder category!

Our latest meet was the unique summer competition know as The Beach Meet, where kids stay casual in their swimwear when they do their routines.
True to its name, the parks bring mats, rings and gymnastics things to the beach and have a big, wacky, fun time in the sun and sand.   The athletes splashed around and played in Lake Michigan when their medals and ribbons were won and their levels were done.

Don't Miss The Bliss!--Cloud 9 Has To Close September 6th

While you're down at Navy Pier gawking at the armada of immense sail boats, ChiIL Mama highly recommends checking out Cloud 9--Cirque Shanghai's excellent acrobatic extravaganza.   They must close September 6th, so catch 'em while you can!   Du-Jay and Sagezilla were mezmerized when we caught their act back in June, and we know you'll be dazzled, too.

ChiIL Mama shot a 213 photo comprehensive slideshow of Cloud 9 highlights, to give you a little teaser of what's in store.   Still, photos can't compare to the real thing.

Here are their added shows and final schedule for the summer:

Mere weeks remain to be amazed by “Cirque Shanghai: Cloud 9,” a world premiere event that has astonished and entertained Chicago audiences this summer.  Hailed by the Chicago Tribune as a “much-loved summer tradition,” Cirque Shanghai’s world premiere, and only U.S. engagement, of “Cloud 9” at the Navy Pier® Pepsi® Skyline Stage (600 E. Grand Ave.) must close Sep. 6 (Labor Day).

“Cirque Shanghai: Cloud 9”performs Wednesdays at 2 p.m., 6 p.m. and 8 p.m.; Thursdays at 2 p.m. and 8 p.m.; Fridays at 2 p.m. and 8 p.m.; Saturdays at 2 p.m., 6 p.m. and 8 p.m.; and Sundays at 2 p.m. and 4 p.m.

There will also be additional performances on Thursday, Aug. 26 and Friday, Aug. 27 at 6 p.m. in conjunction with the Pepsi® Tall Ships® Chicago 2010 celebration at Navy Pier, as well as Sunday, Sep. 5 at 8 p.m. and Monday, Sep. 6 (Labor Day) at 2 p.m. and 4 p.m.

Daring spectacle, breathtaking artistry and the sheer joy of its dazzling young cast make “Cirque Shanghai: Cloud 9” a magnificent theatrical experience for audiences of all ages, with acrobats careening from sway poles suspended high above the stage, gravity-defying ladder balances, a unicyclist riding atop a spinning umbrella, the fun and skill of “hat juggling,” and featuring “Imperial Thunder,” China’s finest daredevil motorcycle troupe riding precariously in a steel globe center stage at Pepsi Skyline Stage.

Under the creative direction of Sylvia Hase, directed by Miao Miao Chen and with choreography by Brenda Didier, “Cirque Shanghai: Cloud 9” is presented in this exclusive U.S. engagement by Navy Pier in conjunction with International Special Attractions, Ltd. (ISA) production headquarters in Shanghai, China.

Tickets are: $14.50 – $19.50 for adults and $12.50 – $14.50 for children ages 3 – 12. Gold Circle seating is priced for all performances at $29.50 for adults and children. Children 2 and under are welcome and admitted free of charge.

Tickets are available by calling 800-745-3000 or visiting ticketmaster.com/shanghai.  Discounted tickets for groups of 10 or more are available by calling GroupTix at 877.4GRP.TIX (877.447.7849) or visiting www.grouptix.net.

Located on Lake Michigan, just east of Chicago’s downtown, Navy Pier is the most-visited tourist and leisure destination in the Midwest, welcoming more than 8 million visitors annually.  Originally opened in 1916 as a shipping and recreation facility, it is now one of the country’s preeminent recreation and exposition facilities, showcasing 50 acres of parks, gardens, restaurants, shops, attractions, sightseeing and dining cruise boats, exhibition facilities and  more.

Abandoned!

"Mommy!   Silly bands are abandoned!" Sagezilla wailed when I picked her up after the 3rd day of school.   Back in the Spring, they were unheard of, but the silly band fad exploded over the Summer, and many kids came back to school laden with them around their wrists and ankles.

"What do you mean, Sweetie?   Did you leave some at school?" I asked.

"No, Mom.   We were allowed to have them, but just trade them at recess only, but people couldn't handle it, and they kept on messing with them in class.   And the same people still kept trading them when they weren't supposed to.   And we got three chances and then they got BANNED."

We're no stranger to the banning of the bands.   In Swedish Museum camp this summer, silly bands were no laughing matter.   The staff began the camp lenient about them, but found them far too distracting.

The final straw came as they were trying to teach the campers dances from around the world, but the kids were consumed with trading bands and wouldn't pay attention.   That, coupled with the annoyance of finding the bands all over the floor, day after day, culminated in a silly band ban.

Du-Jay's 4th-6th grade class is still permitted to wear them and trade at recess only.   Sagezilla's has gone to an all out ban, where kids so much as entering class wearing them forfeit the bands.

We happen to like the bands ourselves, but everything has a time and a space.   They do encourage generosity, and creativity, and make a fun sorting work.   The kids have alternately arranged theirs by color and theme.

Our friend, Tucker, also said one of the funniest things I've heard recently in response to a silly band.   He showed me one, like the white band on Zilla's shirt pictured above, and said, "I think this one is supposed to be a high heeled shoe, but look, if you turn it sideways, it's a pileated woodpecker!"   I love how that kid thinks.  But we'll limit our trading and sharing with friends to after school and weekends.

Abandon bands all ye who enter here.   Before you enter the hallowed halls of learning at your school, find out what the official word is on those infernal, addictive little latex bands.   They're cheap, colorful and fun to collect, but in the interest of peace, there may be many classrooms this fall that decide to ban the bands.

A Penny For Your Pots: Jewel-Osco's Professional Cookware Promotion Begins Today

A penny for your thoughts...A penny saved is a penny earned...Find a penny, pick it up, the rest of they day you'll have good luck.   Our cultural obsession with penny wisdom dates back to the Ben Franklin days, when those little copper discs were actually worth something.

Starting today, pennies can prove their worth once again.   Break open your piggy banks and head to Jewel through January 2011.   It's time to turn your pennies into pro pots.

Jewel has a great professional cookware promotion going on now through January 12, 2011.   Click on the link for full details and to download your own stamp card.   We had a chance to try out the roasting pan with rack and this truly is pro cookware on par with our professional Circulon and Calphalon pans.

Our favorite thing about this promotion, besides the quality of the cookware, is the versatility.   If you have more time than money, you have months to earn stickers ala S & H green stamps, with every $10 increment of Jewel purchases.   It's a thrifty, smart way to get great cookware without spending a lotta cash.

If you have more money than time or hate to wait, you can buy pieces out rightly, or trade in a combination of stamps and cash.   Also, there's no waiting for a particular week to come up for the pot of your choice.   The whole collection is available for the duration of the promotion.

I spent last Tuesday with a collective of other pro-bloggers, exploring the multiple facets of Jewel.   They hosted a fun, fact filled, "Back to Routine" event so we could pass on tips, tasty quick recipes and health back to school info to you.   I'd never been in the gorgeous, spacious Jewel on Kinzie and Desplaines in Chicago's Fulton Market District.   It's one of their newer stores, built around two years ago, and it's quite impressive.

Jewel can't out cheap the big box stores, but they have reinvented themselves with a growing assortment of organic and healthy natural foods, at an affordable price point.   They also run weekly rotating discounts for even better bargains.   Jewel comes out in the lead when compared to most health food specialty stores, like the chain popularly known as "Whole Paycheck".  They're also successfully experimenting with gourmet foods, a varied wine selection, and luxury amenities like an in store chef in 3 locations.

We'll have a lot more gems of information in shorter topical tidbits, but we wanted to let you know about the pro pot promo right away.

Win A Disc Wednesdays: Back To School Special with 2 Free Tickets To North Coast Festival and a Whole Week of Recess Monkey!!

Recess Monkey, Sagezilla and Du-Jay
hangin' out at Kidzapalooza 2010.
Gotta love those silver space pants!

We're old pros at this back to school deal, with almost 3 weeks under our belts.   In Chicagoland, a whole slew of our friends went back this week, and a legion of lucky monkeys are still out till after Labor Day.

Whether you're still lounging at the lakefront, out stocking up on supplies, or well into the routine... ChiIL Mama has three extra cool give aways this week to help you celebrate summer's end and new beginnings.

First, we have a whole week of recess to celebrate back to school...RECESS MONKEY, that is.    These 3 school teachers from Seattle rocked the stage at Kidzapalooza.   They were a past ChiIL Mama Win-A-Disc-Wednesday band and you can check out our review HERE.

ChiIL Mama has Kidzapalooza set videos, exclusive interviews, and even footage of Lolla Co-Producer, Tor Hyams, gettin' funky on the organ with the monkey boys.   He'll be producing Recess Monkey's next recording in December!   Recess is an important, well loved part of every school day, so we'll be celebrating with 7 days of new Recess Monkey fun.   Check in often.
