Paws of Fury: The Legend of Hank is about a young dog, Hank (Michael Cera), down on his luck but with a head full of dreams. Hank is determined to make his dream come true by learning to become a Samurai. Lucky for him, a once great Samurai named Jimbo (Samuel L Jackson) is available to teach him as long as he can defend a village of cats with a No Dogs Allowed policy. Ika Chu (Ricky Gervais) wishes to destroy their village to expand his kingdom and secure his spot as the new Shogun. 

This is an animated comedy loosely based on Mel Brooks' 1974 film Blazing Saddles. Mel Brooks voices The Shogun. 

It is filled with cliches, references to other movies and breaking of the 4th wall moments which sometimes works and sometimes doesn't. It is probably best for the 10 and under crowd. 

Lori is an unschooling Chicago mom who lives in LaGrange with her three kids. She is a 2nd degree black belt in TKD and a burlesque dancer, who teaches self defense.

is the newest adventure in the Wizarding World™ created by J.K. Rowling.

Professor Albus Dumbledore (Jude Law) knows the powerful Dark wizard Gellert Grindelwald (Mads Mikkelsen) is moving to seize control of the wizarding world. Unable to stop him alone, he entrusts Magizoologist Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne) to lead an intrepid team of wizards, witches and one brave Muggle baker on a dangerous mission, where they encounter old and new beasts and clash with Grindelwald’s growing legion of followers. IMAX® has announced that Marvel Studios’ “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” will debut entirely in expanded aspect ratio exclusively in IMAX. The highly anticipated sequel was filmed using IMAX-certified cameras and is set to be released by The Walt Disney Company on May 4.

Sam Raimi directs returning cast Benedict Cumberbatch, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Benedict Wong, Michael Stühlbarg and Rachel McAdams, and adds Elizabeth Olsen and Xochitl Gomez. Shot with Panavision DXL2 IMAX certified cameras, the entire film is formatted exclusively for IMAX theatres where fans will experience “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” at 1.90:1 aspect ratio – showing up to 26% more of the onscreen image only in IMAX.

Aspect ratio is the technical term for the proportional relationship between an image’s width and height. Most films are presented in an aspect ratio called CinemaScope (2.40:1) which appears very wide but not as high. IMAX provides filmmakers with the ability to use an expanded aspect ratio – allowing them to use more of the original image. Watching a film with an expanded aspect ratio provides audiences with a full immersive view that fills the peripheral vision more than any other cinematic experience.

“Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” will play in IMAX theatres beginning May 4.

SYNOPSIS

What kid today couldn’t use a little goodness, love, and perseverance? But what kid today would even relate to those concepts?

I’ll tell you who: a kid who saw The Kid Who Would Be King.

I took my tween son and his guy friends to preview this modern, humorous take on the story of King Arthur, and the consensus was “awesome.”

The set-up is familiar: the protagonist (Alex—played by Louis Ashbourne Serkis) and his best friend (Bedders—played by Dean Chaumoo) are bullied at school. Protagonist is troubled at home—in this case by the fact that he knows little about his dad except for the fact that his mom says he had “demons to battle.”

There is the whole hero’s journey: the arrival of the teacher, the call to adventure, the refusal, the acquiescence. The imagery of Excalibur stuck in a stone in an urban construction site was fun. As was a teenaged Merlin with a touch of Cosmo Kramer-like physical comedy.



The formulaic nature of the plot is acknowledged in the movie, with characters comparing themselves to Sam and Frodo as well as Harry Potter and his crew.

At the heart of the story is a quest embarked upon by Alex, Bedders, and their two bullies, Lance (Tom Taylor) and Kaye (Rhianna Dorris). The stakes are high as the fate of Britain lies with them—and Alex hopes to finally meet his father. Merlin instructs them in a secularized chivalric code which boils down to: be on the side of good, take care of your loved ones, and never give up.



I appreciated the diversity of the cast, the modern-day challenges the kids faced, and the fact that the evil force was feminine for once (King Arthur’s jealous sister Morgana, portrayed by Rebecca Ferguson). And Patrick Stewart, completely charming as the elder Merlin, brings needed gravitas to the character and the film.



What the kids liked: The magic performed by Merlin—a kind of snapping, clapping thing that looks odd until you witness its incredible power (though they complained that, in the times he flew about as an owl, he never used bird droppings on the enemy). The inevitable huge battle scene. The humor.

All-in-all, The Kid Who Would Be King was a perfect weekend romp with a group of savvy kids who needed something thoughtfully made to lure them away from Dan TDM for a couple of hours.

A baby panda goes missing. Other exotic animals and "Best in Show" dogs have gone missing as well. It is up to Max, a rough and tumble canine street detective, and his often clueless human partner to solve the case.

This movie had it's funny moments. Like a lot of family movies, much of the humor is more adult and will probably go over the heads of most kids. Many Turner and Hooch references also.

My 10 and 6 year olds really liked it. My 10 year old thought it was a lot like Scooby Doo with the detective work and hijinks ensuing. Max is a lot braver than Scooby Doo and eagerly walks into dangerous situations even when he shouldn't though.

My 8 year old and I thought it was just ok. It did have it's funny moments. The pigeon sidekicks were hilarious. Lessons are learned, friendships develop.

It was good to see Natasha Lyonne, the actress who plays Nikki on Orange is the New Black, in a very different role. Will Arnett is great. It would be good to see these two together again in a different movie.

We were invited to Chicago's Adler Planetarium to see the first episode of National Geographic's ONE STRANGE ROCK, and get a sneak peek inside the traveling four minute immersive space helmet, for a feature for ChiIL Mama. I'm a homeschooling mom of 3 curious kids ages 6, 8 and 10 so this was a great fit for my family.

The episode we saw was visually stunning and informative. I definitely look forward to watching the series. It was a little hard to understand for my youngest (who just turned six). She was genuinely interested though and asked a lot of questions. 



The space helmets were amazing and a great follow up to the first episode. My six year old found it a little scary having the images be so up close. I had difficulty with it as I am claustrophobic. I am glad I did it but probably wouldn't again. My eight and ten year olds greatly enjoyed it and were fascinated by being able to have such a close up look at space and the things they had just learned.

Wearable Technology Simulates Astronaut Point of View Using Footage from One Strange Rock at The Adler Planetarium           

On Friday, April 27, 2018 lovers of outer space were invited to experience the One Strange Rock: Space Projection Helmet, an immersive technology that made a stop at Chicago’s Adler Planetarium for one day only. Through the One Strange Rock: Space Projection Helmets, users instantly blast off into outer space and float through the cosmos as they see the universe through the eyes of an astronaut.

Additionally, guests were treated to a screening of the first episode of One Strange Rock at the Johnson Star Theater. The One Strange Rock helmet experience was held in the The Room of Requirement located on the 2nd level of the Planetarium. 

One Strange Rock, the latest from executive producers Darren Aronofsky, Jane Root and Arif Nurmohamed, tells the extraordinary story of Earth, told from the only people who have ever left it: astronauts. Inspired by the innovative storytelling in One Strange Rock, National Geographic created the Space Projection Helmet to bring this unique astronaut vantage-point even closer to those on Earth. The limited-edition gear will go on tour to schools and planetariums in select cities this Spring- including the stop in Chicago.

One Strange Rock premiered on Monday, April 16 at 9pm CT on The National Geographic Channel.

Housed in a replica space helmet, the projection technology creates an immersive viewing experience through a unique combination of laser projection, custom fish-eye optics and in-built audio. Unlike in-market VR headsets, the helmet offers an exceptionally wide field of view and is designed so the user can freely move their head inside of the dome to look around the entire field of vision, just as an astronaut would within their helmet in space.
