What We're Reading:

It's great to not reinvent the wheel if someone has been there, done that, and written a useful book. Here at ChiIL Mama, we jumped at the chance to read an advance copy of Julie Lythcott-Haims' new release, How To Raise An Adult. It's a tough and timely topic and as a mom of a tween daughter and a teen son, it's a subject on my mind a lot.

Lythcott-Haims writes with humor and insight. She's an experienced lawyer/Stanford Dean/mom, who has been called a triple threat "ologist", psychologist, sociologist and anthropologist based on the themes of her writing. Her invaluable experience as long time Freshman Dean at Stanford makes Lythcott-Haims uniquely qualified to expound on our collective cultural foibles and failings at parenting this generation of American kids. 

I had so many favorite parts of the book, you'll just have to read it, because I can't possibly hit them all. The quote "It's our job as parents to put ourselves out of a job." really spoke to me and sums up my parenting philosophy. My kids have both attended a public Chicago Montessori school from preschool (ages 3 & 4) through 6th grade, so they have been trusted with a lot of independence and child led learning for the past decade, and it shows. Still, we live in a dense, urban area where violence and danger are a true threat. So parenting older kids is a real balancing act between fostering freedom and autonomy and keeping kids out of life threatening situations.

I'm raising two adults who are confident in speaking up, can cook, and take charge of their own homework and schedules. I've often told my kids that my job is not to teach them what to think but how to think and that my job as mom is not to wait on them hand and foot or make their lives fun and easy all the time, but to teach them self sufficiency.

How to Raise an Adult is a welcome reality check and wake up call to helicopter parents whose best intentions may backfire. Humans learn more from our mistakes than our successes. I had a friend in my early 20's whose parents had literally written ALL of her papers through high school and did much of her homework too. College came as a rude shock, and she was left floundering, resentful and utterly unprepared.

When it comes to great tips from How To Raise An Adult, we adore the concept of raising capable kids by "putting independence in their way." My son, now entering high school in the fall, has taken the city bus to and from school for 7th & 8th grade. Both kids have a lot of choice in their activities, and we never do their homework for them but make it clear we're available if they need help figuring out how to do something.

We highly recommend reading How To Raise An Adult. Sometimes less is truly more, and we found this book to be a voice of sanity in a sea of other parenting manuals that demand more and more from overextended parents.

ChiIL Mama had a chance to check out The Care and Keeping of You 2 and it's an excellent and welcome resource from American Girl. It's funny and fact filled without being boring or heavy handed. Families have so many different levels of openness, permissiveness, and religious and cultural differences surrounding raising tweens. We love that the author, Dr. Cara Natterson, frequently encourages girls to go to their parents for the final word. And on the universal changes she nails it, providing anecdotal stories tweens can relate to, and loads of reassuring info to allay anxieties about what's normal.

Sure, it's fun having a tween daughter when you're shopping at The American Girl Doll Store, but it's a bit less of a joy when it comes to discussing the facts of life, growth and change. Sometimes physical maturity comes before emotional maturity and kids do NOT want to talk about this stuff. With puberty hitting lots of girls younger than ever, though, even 7 & 8 year olds need to know what's up, so they won't fear the unknown or worry something is wrong with them. Someone I know well started her period before anyone told her what to expect and she thought she was seriously ill, and stressed out about it for months before her mom found the hidden evidence and told her what was up. No little girl should have to go through that!





I was clued in early and I've been open with my own son and daughter with age appropriate info since they were toddlers, so there'll be no huge shocks. Still, my 9 year old gets embarrassed and runs away when I try to engage with her about puberty, and she hid the first Care & Keeping of You book deep in her closet and turned bright red and said it was "inappropriate" when I asked her where the book disappeared! I told her there's nothing more appropriate and that change is a beautiful and natural part of growing from a little kid into a woman. She may not want to hear about adolescent mood swings or menstruation from me, but it's a relief to know she's covertly reading the books on her own. Thanks American Girl Co. for making this an easier subject to 
broach and getting great information out there for all of our girls!

We've been thoroughly enjoying this year's American Girl Doll of The Year 2013.... my daughter's namesake, Saige!!!!   My daughter's been saving up all her "helpful works money" (allowance) for Saige's outfits, art set, accessories and pets.   She's got her fingers crossed for Saige's hot air balloon for her 10th birthday, May 11th!

There is a plethora of high quality kindie music coming out now, but it still skews young, with the swing set set getting the bulk of the attention.   Many top kindie artists are still aiming low, at the birth to 8 year olds, tops.  We're super stoked to see Andy z aging it up a bit and catering to the underserved tweens with a target audience of 8-12 year olds.   I happen to have 9 & 11 year olds at home and they both dug this tasty 23 track treat as much as I did.   Is there a Hallowtween party in your near future?   This would make an excellent sound track!   

Rockin' tunes alternate with goofy and spooky stories complete with sound effects like old time radio shows.   We share our lives and home with two big dogs, so we particularly dug the tune, When You're a Dog, with it's jazzed up rock riffs and bad dog jokes, and the fact that Andy's dog, Reggie the sidekick, plays a major role throughout.   We also got a kick out of the Jazz scat lesson in Pleadia.

Andy has teamed up with Grammy-nominated producer Tor Hyams to record his fifth studio album, a Halloween-themed audio play titled “The Grand Scream Of Things” newly released September 25th, 2012.

This ambitious project is driven by Andy’s quest to bring a new vista to the landscape of music for the 8 to 12 year old set. and features guest vocals by contemporaries Paula Messner (Candy Band) and RhymeZwell.

The top-notch instrumentalists heard on The Grand Scream Of Things include Greg Ellis (drums and percussion) and Geoff Pearlman (guitar, bass).

Also contributing to the project are San Francisco based Michael Olmos (trumpet), Bobby Strickland (saxophones), and Michael Rinta (trombone), who, collectively, have played with everyone from Santana, The Grateful Dead, Sly & The Family Stone and Todd Rundgren to Etta James, Herbie Hancock and Taj Mahal.

We recently got to check out a copy of Ghost Hunters Book One, The Haunted House.   The publisher sent us one to review and one for our readers.  As a father of 4, author Jason Mark knows what fascinates and what scares young kids without being too over the top.   Ghost Hunters is well written and not too scary for elementary kids ready for short chapter books.   
  
We love that the spiders are the good guys and spiders in the bedroom in particular are a great sign and protect humans from ghosts.  This story's fresh and unique in that ghosts can morph into woodland fairies, and kids can be brave and save the day.   It's a good read any time of year but particularly fun right before Halloween.  Check it out.   This popular on line book can be uploaded for  a quick and entertaining read on the run, or read aloud as a family to younger kids.   It's just recently available as a small paper back, just the right size for young hands.

Boy Oh Boy--Woody's Fun
