Illinois Farm Families at Daley Plaza Today 7-2

If you're like most urban parents I know, you try to feed your kids fresh, healthy food as much as possible.   You read up on potential toxic chemicals, agricultural practices and food additive health risks.   And you also read about the health benefits of eating well, so your kids can grow strong minds and bodies.

I recently had the chance to meet with California Strawberry Producers and Illinois Farm Families, and we'll be featuring lots of great info on health benefits, farming practices, recipes and more this month.    We'll even be giving away a strawberry recipe book.

We have also tried to make sure our city kids have a good sense of where food comes from.    We've picked strawberries in Wisconsin, harvested eggs and fed chickens in Michigan, and milked cows.

Right now, Illinois Farm Families are looking for 5 urban field moms who want to tour farms throughout the year, video tape, question farm families and blog about their rural experiences.

Talk with them in person at the farmer's market at Daley Plaza today 7am-2pm and next Thursday as well, or check out their web site for more information and the application at Watch Us Grow.    If you're interested in farm related events in the area, join their meet up group.

Video cameras and transportation will be provided to the field moms selected.

Beginning this fall, Illinois Farm Families will bring a group of city moms out to meet our families and tour our farms.
We’re opening our doors to give these Field Moms a behind-the-scenes look at how we:
  • Grow your food
  • Care for our animals
  • Protect the land
Field Moms will see firsthand how we raise food that is safe and healthy for your family – and ours.  And they'll report what they see, hear and learn right here, on Watch Us Grow

llinois Farm Families will be at several Chicago-area events and attractions this summer, so come see us!  We’ll answer all your questions, help you register to win free groceries for a year – even help you apply to become a Field Mom for our Family-to-Family Farm Tours later this year.
Meet the farm families this summer:
  • August 11, 18 & 25 - Daley Plaza Farmers Markets, 7 a.m. - 2 p.m.
  • August 12-21 - Illinois State Fair in Springfield
    • See how we have “A Good Thing Growing”
  • Illinois County Fairs
    • Stop by any of the Illinois County fairs to visit farm families and their exhibits
    • Visit Illinois County Fairs for a full schedule and more information about each fair
  • September 17 - Nationwide NASCAR at the Chicagoland Speedway
    • See Kenny Wallace and his Family Farmers race car
    • Visit with real farmers to learn about ethanol, view machinery and ask your questions

Lollapalooza 2011-Saturday Recap & Sunday highlights #lolla #kidza11 #kidza

Here's ChiIL Mama's photo filled best of Kidzapalooza/Lollapalooza Saturday.   Check out the early morning "goose-a-palooza and 312 celebrity kick ball game.   Follow our band adventures with Kids These Days, mainstage acts and Kidza highlights like rockin' in the rain as Tor sat in with Brady Rymer.   Dugan won (and graciously gave up) a $200 Loog guitar, since he'd already won the grand prize Friday.

We've only got a moment to post as we're off again for our final day of Lolla 2011--20th anniversary.    Look for ChiIL Mama in an original T-shirt from the very first Lollapalooza waaaay back in 1991.  Here's what we're most looking forward to today.

Sunday Plan:
The Kidz Stage has a strong line up today and we'll be there from Keller's 2:30 show through close today.   ChiIL Mama was at the VIR (Very Important Rocker) event this morning from 8-11 where we recorded the whole show and interviewed Ralph Covert & Tor Hyams and The Happiness Club.   We'll have all that posted later this month.

Sunday Kidz Stage Lineup

We're also pretty stoked for a bunch of bands on the main and side stages (some playing simultaneously).   We hope to check out The Cars-4pm-Music Unlimited Stage and Cage The Elephant-5:15-Playstation Stage.

Saturday Recap:
We'll have loads of great coverage in the weeks to come.   Saturday began with "goose-a-palooza" at 10am--see the slide show above.   Then we caught up with the celebrity kickball game.   Check out complete coverage of the game at 312 blog, Hangovers and Hand Grenades by Jeremy.

We enjoyed Northbrook Garage's 11:30 set, and Kids These Days' amazing set as they rocked the Toyota tent in a live broadcast.   Disappears was a welcome surprise.  They have some elements of The Cramps and Nirvana we thoroughly enjoyed.

Then we bounced back to check out Big Bang Boom rockin' the Kidz Stage.   Then we were back at the north end of Lolla Land for hot sets from Black  Lips, Death From Above 1979, Deftones, and Ween.    Between that, we ran back to Kidza for an amazing set by Brady Rymer and the closing lottery.

In some crazy twist of fate, Dugan was again picked from the random lottery cage for the grand prize, Loog Guitar!   He got excited and happy to give it to his little sister who hadn't won anything either day.   When Tor asked if he'd be willing to give it up to another family Dugan generously agreed and donated his grand prize back to another little girl and agreed to share his original win with his sister.

We had to get up crazy early for VIR at The James Hotel, so we got outta dodge just as Eminem was going on and the gate crashers were storming the gates in earnest.   We hit a stamped as we left the venue and got the kids out of the way, but I got slammed into the concrete bridge wall by a large dude on the run and the good sized cop who tackled him.   Luckily it's only a flesh wound.

We'll be interviewing Kids These Days and Northbrook Garage in the near future, so check in with ChiIL Mama like we vote in Chi, IL...early and often.

Cheap Lollapalooza Parking #lolla #kidza

We've had a lotta requests for where to find cheap Lolla parking, so we'll give up the goods.    Go south!    There are 2 lots near 8th & State for $10 and $14 respectively.    Take a cruise down 11th, too.    A number of garages and outdoor parking lots have special event parking signs out, but are still much more reasonable than Millennium or Grant Park Garages and not a bad walk to the main entrance.    *Buyer beware...Some unscrupulous lots have $10 signs out then when you swipe your credit credit card it's far more.    So, double check the rates before you assume.    See you out there.

Lollapalooza 2011-Friday Recap & Saturday highlights #lolla #kidza11 #kidza

Lollapalooza, my how you've grown!   20 years after the first Lollapalooza brought concert goers a new idea in merging music, art, social consciousness and eco-awareness, Lolla has become nothing less than an epic event.    If you missed tickets to this sold out weekend, have to work, or have a family and wimped out on taking the kids through the crowds, the weather and the late nights, then follow along on ChiIL Mama's daily recaps.   On YouTube, the event is streaming live all weekend, and we saw our press friends over at Fuse, Spin Magazine, ParentSphere, The Local Tourist, and The News-Mexico City, among others, who are out covering the fest in force.

Here are our top Saturday picks and highlights from Friday.    Remember, as always, kids 10 and under are free with paying adults.

Saturday
Once again, there are so many great bands playing simultaneously that it's hard to go wrong.    Sometimes serendipity is best and you just wander up on something magical going down.   The energy is amazing!    That said, we do have some "must sees".   At 11:30 we'll be at the kidz stage checkin' out  Northbrook Garage.    These Chi-Town kids rock!

Here's the rest of the Saturday Kidz Stage Lineup:

Northbrook Garage

Special Guest

We plan to see:
Northbrook Garage-Kidz Stage-11:30
The Happiness Club-Kidz Stage-12:30

Big Bang Boom-Kidz Stage-1:30
Big Audio Dynamite-Music Unlimited Stage
Deftones-Playstation
Ween-Bud Light
My Morning Jacket

If you're lucky enough to have 10 and unders with you, swing by the Kidz Area where all activities are FREE and our old favs from past years like punk hair coloring, spray on tats and Paul Frank silk screened tote bags are all back again.    We also highly recommend all 10 and unders enter the free lottery.   **Note:  You must be present at the Kidz Stage to win, around 5pm each day.   The prizes make it well worth stickin' around or swinging back by!    Kids can win a host of instruments including a super cool wooden Loog Guitar.    These instruments are so sweet and we were beyond stoked that Du-Jay won one yesterday!    Just about all the kids who stay for the lottery walk away with at least a Kidzapalooza harmonica.

When all the Lolla fun is over and we have a chance to really play with our Loog Guitar, we'll have a full review and feature up.    For now, I'm in love with the eco-friendly consideration and excellent craftsmenship that's gone into this cool 3 string guitar.   It's a pretty genius concept that makes picking up guitar for the first time less intimidating.    Check out their web site HERE for details on how to play.    We also dig that they're designed to grow with kids, with a longer, replaceable neck available.    What started as a NYU Masters Thesis and launched in March of this year has become so hot, they can hardly manufacture them fast enough!

We were also happy to see Thermos/Threadless representing in the press lounge.   We have had a seemingly endless quest for leak proof, kid friendly, non-toxic, funky fun water bottles.    It's been one drippy disaster and poor design after another.    Then we bought a couple of Thermos bottles with Threadless designs and they rock!    We'll have a full review up this month.    We picked up 3 new designs at Lolla, but here's our fav.

Best of Friday Lolla/Kidza Recap:
ChiIL Mama's top choices for the day

Ruby Jane-BMI Stage
Grace Potter & The Nocturnals-Bud Light Stage
Smith Westerns-Playstation Stage
Kids These Days-BMI
The Kills-Bud Light
OK Go
Muse

Between all the excellent bands, we managed to pick up 2 recycle bags full of bottles and cans to earn bamboo Lollapalooza tees, ride a bike for 3 minutes to earn a snocone at the Toyota Tent, and grab some excellent brats, hot dogs, fries and good beer at the Lederhosen's Biergarten!

Our Lolladay was off to a great start.    Ruby Jane opened the day with an early set on the BMI Stage at noon.    If you missed ChiIL Mama's original interview with the sweet 16 year old singer/song writer who rocks the violin in an acoustic solo for us, check it out HERE.

Ruby and her mom, JoBelle, are the nicest, most genuine, down to earth people and we enjoyed getting to know them better.    It was refreshing to see a super talented kid who is not only a serious talent but a tomboy with a sense of humor and a love of running around and wrestling outside, and climbing trees.    She truly is one to watch in the coming years.    Check out her website and her full length live album, Live at Roadhouse Rags in Austin, Texas.    ChiIL Mama will have a review up later this month.
www.rubyjane.org

www.therubyjaneshow.com

Grace Potter was absolutely amazing.    Check out her set on YouTube.    If you missed it before, check out ChiIL Mama's photo filled Grace Potter feature from Chicago Bluegrass and Blue Fest HERE.   Oola la Lollapalooza indeed!

We had to hustle back to the Kidz Area to catch her set, and I'm infinitely glad we did.   This 2 piece was amazing.    Elizaveta just bloomed from her flower clad sandals to her hair bouquet.    We love discovering excellent new musicians.

Here's how Elizaveta describes herself:

I am a Flower Alchemist with a minor in music.
Born in New York City, raised in Motherland Russia, spent teenage years sequestered in an Italian monastery.
Following a prophecy, arrived in the U.S. incognito and studied opera. The rest is history.
I seek to sing in a manner which would create within your chest a safe, magical, truthful place of power beyond the slow burn of stars.

Muse ended the evening with a bang--a big fireworks show, bang.    One down, two to go.   See you out there.

ChiIL Mama's Video Interview With Ruby Jane

ChiIL Mama's interview with 16 year old prodigy, Ruby Jane.

Ruby plays Lollapalooza 2011 at noon on Friday at the BMI Stage.

RUBY JANE
From Austin, TX, 16-year-old Ruby Jane is the real deal. Born in Dallas and raised in Mississippi, she is a fiddler, singer/songwriter, and bandleader of The Ruby Jane Show, showcasing a mix of country, jazz, bluegrass, and blues. She exhibited a strong connection to music early, starting violin lessons at age 2, and began playing bluegrass when she was 8. Ruby played with Marty Stuart, Rhonda Vincent, Jesse McReynolds, and many others, and became the youngest fiddler in history to play the Grand Ole Opry at age 10. The CBS Evening News ran a feature on Ruby when she was 12, and she played with Big & Rich in front of 60,000 people on ABC’s CMA Music Festival Special.

Ruby Jane moved to Austin in 2007, playing with Texas greats like Johnny Gimble, Dale Watson, Freddy Powers, and Will Sexton. Ray Benson of Asleep At The Wheel discovered Ruby while looking for a young fiddle player for his play “A Ride With Bob.” Ruby joined the cast, and through Ray met her childhood hero Willie Nelson during the making of Willie and the Wheel. This led to Ruby touring nationally with both Asleep At The Wheel and Willie Nelson.

Ruby Jane’s primary focus now is her own band, “The Ruby Jane Show.” 2010 was busy for Ruby. She toured France in August, and in September at 2010′s ACL Fest, she sat in with Blues Traveler, and then drew over 2,000 people for her own performance, being named “MVP of ACL Fest” by the Austin Chronicle. Ruby Jane continues to write songs, improve in technique, and mature in style. She can be found making music in and around Austin, whether sitting in with bands and performers from across the musical spectrum, or leading The Ruby Jane Show. She is warming hearts, embracing audiences, and making everyone wonder just where she is bound.

Galapalooza Tonight! ChiIL Mama's Photo Filled Feature on Grace Potter & The Nocturnals

Grace Potter & The Nocturnals at Chicago Bluegrass & Blues Fest, Congress Theater
Check out loads of ChiIL Mama's photo pit coverage at ChiIL Live Shows.com
The fifth annual GALApalooza is taking place on Thursday, August 4 at the Petrillo Band Shell in Grant Park. While crews are making final preparations for the legendary festival, party-goers will enjoy a chic, open-air cocktail party with outdoor lounge seating and a concert featuring Lollapalooza artist Grace Potter and the Nocturnals, with Elizaveta and Walk the Moon supporting.

This year, dinner will be provided by some of Chicago’s hottest gourmet food trucks: 5411 empanadas, Gaztro-wagon, The Slideride and The Southern Mac & Cheese, with dessert by Flirty Cupcakes. This VIP experience is topped off with amazing raffle prizes, premium beverage service and servers for your lounge.

All proceeds from GALApalooza benefit Parkways Foundation in their mission to support park projects and launch new youth programming throughout the Chicago Park District. This year, proceeds go to the Send a Kid to Camp Fund and nature and environmental science programming designed to get our kids outdoors, active and connected to nature.

Studies show kids are spending upwards of six hours a day “wired” indoors versus 30 minutes a week outside in unstructured play. At a time when our kids are more sedentary and staying inside more than ever before, donors to GALApalooza will help send 3,500 kids to camp and will engage 10,000 children and families throughout the city to experience the wonder of nature in their local parks.

Generous sponsors, supporters and partners of this year’s event include Charter One (Lead Corporate Sponsor), Best Buy, Bloomingdale’s, Budweiser, Classic Party Rentals, Francis Ford Coppola Presents, The James Hotel, The Blackstone Hotel, Rabine Paving, Groupon, Chicago magazine, Grey Goose, H20, and WXRT.
