Shows On Our Radar: Peter Pan – A Musical Adventure at Chicago Shakespeare Theater Through August 19th

ChiIL Mama's Chi, IL Picks List:
Family Friendly Theatre Fun

Chicago Shakespeare Theater announces casting for
PETER PAN – A MUSICAL ADVENTURE
Amber Mak directs musical adaptation of beloved J.M. Barrie tale
this summer on Navy Pier, beginning June 27

 *Ages 5+. 75min running time.*

Just in time for the 65th anniversary of the Disney animated classic, Peter Pan, Chicago Shakespeare Theater's summer family musical is a newly updated production of Peter Pan – A Musical Adventure. Here at ChiIL Mama, CST has been a favorite of ours for years, and their summer musicals are always a top annual pick of ours for fabulous, family friendly fun for all ages.

This summer, Chicago Shakespeare Theater announces the cast and creative team for the summer family musical production of Peter Pan – A Musical Adventure at the Theater’s home on Navy Pier, June 27–August 19, 2018. Based on J.M. Barrie's beloved tale about the boy who wouldn’t grow up, this heartwarming musical dazzles with a score written by George Stiles and lyrics by Anthony Drewe—the award-winning songwriting duo behind Disney and Cameron Mackintosh’s smash hit Mary Poppins and the Olivier Award-winning Honk! Amber Mak takes the helm as the production’s director and choreographer in this newly updated version by Elliot Davis based on the book by Willis Hall.

Peter Pan – A Musical Adventure follows Peter and the Darling children—Wendy, John, and Michael—on a high-flying journey to the enchanted world of Neverland, where the Lost Boys take on the villainous Captain Hook and his bumbling band of pirates. The 75-minute production is the perfect summer outing for families to come together and experience the delights of live theater. After each performance, audience members have the opportunity to interact with cast members for one-on-one conversations and photos in the Lobby.

Known for bringing vibrant, new perspectives to classic musicals, director and choreographer Amber Mak makes her Chicago Shakespeare directing debut, after a series of critically acclaimed productions at Paramount Theatre, including The Little Mermaid, Elf the Musical, and Hairspray. In 2017, Mak directed the world premiere of Number Nerds, which became the surprise hit of the New York Musical Festival (NYMF).

“What’s remarkable about young audiences is that they can transform the mundane and everyday into the fantastical,” Mak shared. “Yet in our world, we tell them they have to grow up, and that spark of imagination can be extinguished. The reason that Peter Pan has endured for so long is because J.M. Barrie inspires that imagination, hope, and freedom. Now more than ever, young people need that.”

Johnny Shea takes the stage as Peter Pan—a headstrong and clever boy who never wants to grow up. Elizabeth Stenholt performs the role of Wendy—a charming girl who challenges Peter Pan and comes to serve as a maternal figure for the Lost Boys. The bookish and loyal John, the middle child of the Darling family, is portrayed by Cameron Goode, and the youngest of the Darlings, Michael, is portrayed by Carter Graf. Peter’s sworn enemy is Captain Hook, performed by James Konicek—who also portrays Mr. Darling. Mrs. Darling is performed by Roberta Burke. The band of pirates includes Sean Patrick Fawcett as Hook’s right-hand man, Smee—as well as Roberta Burke as Cecco, Jonathan Butler-Duplessis as Bill Jukes, and Christina Hall as Starkey. The troupe of Lost Boys features Colin Lawrence as Curly, Michael Kurowski as Tootles, John Marshall Jr. as Slightly Soiled, and Travis Austin Wright as Nibs. Framing the production as the Storyteller is acclaimed Chicago actress Rengin Altay.

Joining Mak on the creative team are Kory Danielson as Music Director and Matt Deitchman as Orchestrator. Creating the imaginative world of Neverland onstage are Jeff Award-winners Scenic Designer Jeff Kmiec, Costume Designer Theresa Ham, Lighting Designer Greg Hofmann, Sound Designer Ray Nardelli, and Projections Designer Mike Tutaj. Completing the creative team is Chicago Shakespeare Theater’s resident Wig and Make-up Designer Richard Jarvie, who has designed over thirty CST productions. Onstage flying effects are created by ZFX. Serving as dialect coach for this production is Susan Gosdick. Megan E. Farley is the production’s Associate Director and Choreographer.

Chicago Shakespeare Theater strives to make its facility and performances accessible to all patrons through its Access Shakespeare program. Access performances for Peter Pan – A Musical Adventure include:

ASL Duo-interpreted Performance: Sunday, August 12 at 11:00 a.m.
Audio-described Performance: Sunday, August 19 at 11:00 a.m. (with optional touch tour at 9:15 a.m.)

Chicago Shakespeare Theater presents a wide range of dynamic programming for multi-generational audiences. In addition to imaginative summer musicals at the Theater’s home on Navy Pier, offerings year-round include Short Shakespeare! abridgments of Shakespeare’s classics and the free Chicago Shakespeare in the Parks tour to neighborhood parks throughout the city. This summer, 25 performances of the classic A Midsummer Night’s Dream adapted and directed by the Theater’s artistic director Barbara Gaines, will tour to 18 neighborhood parks across the city, July 27–August 26, 2018.

SHOW DOGS is a family comedy about the unlikely pairing of a human detective (Will Arnett) and his canine partner (voice of Chris "Ludacris" Bridges), who has to go undercover at the world's most exclusive dog show to solve his biggest case yet.

GUEST REVIEW:
Lori Morrison-Contreras

A baby panda goes missing. Other exotic animals and "Best in Show" dogs have gone missing as well. It is up to Max, a rough and tumble canine street detective, and his often clueless human partner to solve the case.

This movie had it's funny moments. Like a lot of family movies, much of the humor is more adult and will probably go over the heads of most kids. Many Turner and Hooch references also.

My 10 and 6 year olds really liked it. My 10 year old thought it was a lot like Scooby Doo with the detective work and hijinks ensuing. Max is a lot braver than Scooby Doo and eagerly walks into dangerous situations even when he shouldn't though.

Sprinkles, voiced by Gabriel Iglesias, Philippe, voiced by Stanley Tucci, and Max, voiced by Chris “Ludacris” Bridges, in SHOW DOGS.

My 8 year old and I thought it was just ok. It did have it's funny moments. The pigeon sidekicks were hilarious. Lessons are learned, friendships develop.

It was good to see Natasha Lyonne, the actress who plays Nikki on Orange is the New Black, in a very different role. Will Arnett is great. It would be good to see these two together again in a different movie.

Director: Raja Gosnell
Writers: Max Botkin and Marc Hyman

Grand-scale North American premiere of the
Olivier Award-winning London production of
JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR
Now playing at Lyric through May 20

REVIEW:
Lyric's decadently dark Jesus Christ Superstar is nothing short of epic, with over 80 artists on stage and 90 pound of gold confetti at every show.

This production is a spectacle you have to see and hear to believe, and pure Broadway gold. It was my great pleasure to catch opening night and the audience was enthralled, singing along and on their feet even before the rousing standing ovation. This is a superb choice for a family theatre outing, with multigenerational appeal.

Photos by D'Arcy Mies

I particularly liked the incorporation of live instruments on stage. Jesus, Peter and Pilate all play guitar, in addition to the 37 musicians!

The scope and magnitude of this production boggles the mind. There are 150 costumes, 112 pairs of sneakers, King Herod's 28 foot long gold cape,

56 mics, 101 lights illuminating the 37 foot cross and 7 full sized trees. The visual is stunning of Judas' silver stained hands, when he sold out his master and friend for money and betrayed him with a kiss.

The women are wonderful.

Jesus' lashes with a whip, complete with sound effects and explosions of gold, was a hauntingly dramatic point as well.

The choreography is a joy to see and the entire cast is a visual and auditory feast.

Lyric Opera Chicago has a world class reputation and here at ChiIL Mama and ChiIL Live Shows we've particularly enjoyed their annual Broadway at Lyric crossover productions for years. The popularity of these adaptations of musicals extends well beyond the usual opera buffs, and with Jesus Christ Super Star, they have outdone themselves. Highly recommended.

The North American premiere of Timothy Sheader’s explosive Olivier Award-winning production of Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice’s rock opera Jesus Christ Superstar opens at Lyric tonight, April 27, with performances through May 20 (press opening April 28). Lyric is the only place to experience the grand scale of this acclaimed production in its first staging outside London.

The Lyric production features Heath Saunders (Jesus), Ryan Shaw (Judas), Jo Lampert (Mary Magdalene), Michael Cunio (Pilate), Mykal Kilgore (Simon Zealotes), Shaun Fleming (Herod), Joseph Anthony Byrd (Annas), Cavin Cornwall (Caiaphas) and Andrew Mueller (Peter), with a total of 48 cast members and 37 musicians, including members of the Lyric Opera Orchestra and Chorus. The London performances comprised 11 musicians and 27 cast members.

Single tickets for Jesus Christ Superstar at the Lyric Opera House, 20 N. Wacker Drive, start at $35 and are on sale now at jcsuperstar.org, in person at the Lyric box office, or by calling 312-827-5600. To guarantee a front-row rock-concert experience, Lyric is also offering exclusive, $99 stage-front seating over the orchestra pit – the closest possible position to the stage – for the first time in the company's history of presenting Broadway musicals.

Three-time Olivier Award winner Timothy Sheader directs the North American premiere of his acclaimed 2016 production from Regent’s Park Open-Air Theatre. Sheader is joined in Chicago by the original creative team, including conductor Tom Deering, Olivier Award-winning choreographer Drew McOnie, Tony Award-nominated set & costume designer Tom Scutt, and Olivier Award-nominated lighting designer Lee Curran.

Jesus Christ Superstar is an iconic rock opera that reinvented musical theater for the modern age. With music by Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyrics by Tim Rice, this global blockbuster tells the story of the final weeks in the life of Jesus Christ, from the perspective of Judas Iscariot. As Christ’s followers grow more fervent, Judas must make his fateful choice between faith and betrayal. Filled with an exciting mix of musical styles that draw upon 1970s rock, gospel, folk and funk themes, this contemporary imagining of the biblical tale features high-energy dance and powerful visual storytelling.

Lyric’s premiere of Lloyd Webber’s Jesus Christ Superstar generously made possible by Lead Sponsor The Negaunee Foundation and cosponsors an Anonymous Donor and Mr. and Mrs. J. Christopher Reyes. Major in-kind audio support provided by Shure Incorporated. Production by The Regent’s Park Theatre London.

Music by Andrew Lloyd Webber. Lyrics by Tim Rice. In Association with The Really Useful Group Limited. Production by The Regent's Park Theatre London.

WAITRESS
The Tony-nominated musical, will be making its Chicago debut at Broadway In Chicago’s Cadillac Palace Theatre (151 W. Randolph) for a limited three-week engagement
July 3 – 22, 2018.

Brought to life by a groundbreaking all-female creative team, this irresistible new hit features original music and lyrics by 6-time Grammy nominee Sara Bareilles (“Brave,” “Love Song”), a book by acclaimed screenwriter Jessie Nelson (“I Am Sam”) and direction by Tony Award winner Diane Paulus (Finding Neverland, Pippin, Hair).

WAITRESS tells the story of “Jenna”, an expert pie baker working at a local diner and stuck in a loveless marriage. Her salvation comes in the form of her daughter, “Lulu.” The character of “Lulu” will be cast locally in each tour market and two girls are chosen to share the role. But Jenna must summon the strength and courage to rebuild her own life.

“It’s an empowering musical of the highest order!” raves the Chicago Tribune.  “WAITRESS is a little slice of heaven!” says Entertainment Weekly and “a monumental contribution to Broadway!” according to Marie Claire.
