Chicago Children’s Theatre invites families to treat their little cubs to Wake Up, Brother Bear!, a highly interactive journey through the four seasons led by two loveable bears. See a waterfall melt, meet a butterfly, chase an elusive fish and skate on an icy pond. Full of music and physical activity, Wake Up, Brother Bear! takes kids on a fun, intimate and immersive theatrical experience. Even the littlest theatergoers will feel part of the show as they experience live storytelling in a whole new way. Pre and post show activities in the lobby round out the fun.





Wake Up, Brother Bear! will be presented January 25-February 16, 2020. That’s peak arctic season in Chicago, so bring your kids, particularly ages 0 to 6, to come thaw out at Chicago Children’s Theatre, The Station, 100 S. Racine Ave. in Chicago’s West Loop. Public performances are Saturdays and Sundays at 9:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. Run time is 45 minutes.

Behind the Scenes of Wake Up, Brother Bear!

Wake Up, Brother Bear! is written by Janet Stanford and Kathryn Chase Bryer. It was originally produced in 2009 by Imagination Stage in Bethesda, Maryland, where it remains an annual staple a decade later.

Jamie Abelson, Associate Artistic Director, Chicago Children’s Theatre, directs Wake Up, Brother Bear!. The cast is Allyce Torres as Sister Bear, Jonah Winston as Brother Bear and Sonia Goldberg playing live music.

The production team is Will Bishop (co-scenic/props design), Grace Needlman (co-scenic/props design), Sully Ratke (costume design), Becca Jeffords (lighting design) and Robert Hornbostel (sound designer). Rebecca Ross is stage manager. Claire Taylor is assistant stage manager.

In addition, Chicago Children’s Theatre has garnered six NEA Art Works grants, and in 2017, became the first theater for young audiences in the U.S. to win a National Theatre Award from the American Theatre Wing, creators of the Tony Awards.

In addition to leading the company’s new play development, mainstage and education programs, Jacqueline Russell is the creator of Chicago Children’s Theatre’s Red Kite Project, a multi-sensory interactive theatre program tailored specifically to children with special needs. Last season, Russell created and directed X Marks the Spot, a multi-sensory experience inspired by her work with children with visual impairments, which will tour Chicago area schools this fall. In 2010, she was appointed by the U.S. State Department to serve as Cultural Envoy to Canada, was awarded the 2013 “Hero of the Year Award” from the Chicago chapter of Autism Speaks, and was honored as one of 20 Chicago women who have shaped arts and culture featured on Kerry James Marshall’s mural “Rushmore” on the west façade of the Chicago Culture Center.

Chicago Theatre Week (#CTW18), an annual celebration of the rich tradition of theatre-going in Chicago, is now offering value-priced tickets for a wide variety of family-friendly theatre productions. Chicago Theatre Week will take place February 8 – 18, 2018, spanning a week and two full weekends. To accommodate ticket demand, Lifeline Theatre announces eight added performances of its KidSeries production of Mr. Popper’s Penguins, a world premiere musical adaptation by Lifeline Theatre ensemble member Robert Kauzlaric, with music and lyrics by George Howe, and directed by Lifeline Theatre ensemble member Paul S. Holmquist, based on the novel by Richard and Florence Atwater. Money is tight and times are tough in the town of Stillwater. With no houses to paint till spring, Mr. Popper is stuck at home daydreaming of adventures in far-off lands, while Mrs. Popper must scrimp and save just to put beans on the table. But with the unexpected arrival of a spirited penguin named Captain Cook, a new horizon opens before them. As a quiet partnership expands into a boisterous flock, the Poppers learn that there’s no problem that can’t be solved with steady determination, lots of love, and a dash of unconventionality. This production is recommended for children ages five and up (children under two not permitted), and runs one hour with no intermission.

Follow the yellow brick road to The Marriott Theatre for Young Audiences, 10 Marriott Drive in Lincolnshire, for the enchanting musical production of THE WIZARD OF OZ, running from November 7, 2014 through January 4, 2015. The Marriott Theatre for Young Audiences favorite Rachel Rockwell will direct and choreograph, with musical direction by Ryan T. Nelson.  Based on the classic 1939 MGM movie, this special one-hour presentation of THE WIZARD OF OZ features the classic songs "Follow the Yellow Brick Road," “Ding Dong the Witch is Dead," and "Somewhere Over the Rainbow." After a tornado hits her family’s home in Kansas, Dorothy and Toto land in the magical land of Oz. Theater Unspeakable’s Highly Original Take on the Country’s Founding Fathers Will Be Staged at the Vittum Theater, November 4-29

From The Patriot to John Adams, from the iconic portrait of Washington Crossing the Delaware by Emmanuel Gottlieb Leutze to the musical 1776, the birth of our nation has been portrayed countless times in countless ways in the arts. But never quite like this.

Adventure Stage Chicago, a program of Northwestern University Settlement Association, proudly presents Theater Unspeakable’s production of The American Revolution, a critical history lesson in 50 minutes, from November 4-29 at the Vittum Theater, 1012 N. Noble St. in Chicago.

Seven actors—suspended on a platform two feet off the ground—share 21 square feet of space to recreate the entire heroic fight for American independence from Lexington to Yorktown. Using only the actors’ bodies, voices and (pantomimed) cannons, the show evokes an epic time period in American history. Combining tongue-in-cheek humor with a dash of derring-do, The American Revolution displays Theater Unspeakable’s company’s rowdy brand of bare-boned and imaginative physical theater in the company’s first ever extended run in Chicago.

“The country's founding had an imperfect beginning, built upon the sacrifice, slaughter, and subjugation of many individuals and peoples,” said Marc Frost, director of “The American Revolution” and founder of Theatre Unspeakable. “I want them to leave feeling proud of their country's founding, because it truly was the dawning of a new era for personal freedom; yet, even in its most beatified heroes, we see the flaws, the human shortcomings, which to me make the achievements all the more inspiring. We also hope they laugh, too.”

Public Performances will take place November 8, 15, 29 at 4 p.m., and November 14, 21, 28 at 7:30 p.m.; Student Matinees will take place November 4-6, 13, 18, 19, 20, 25 at 10:30 a.m.

Tickets for all shows are $17 for adults, $12 youth aged 14 and under and groups of ten or more; $7 previews.  Student groups begin at $7. *A special $10 ticket is available to neighbors in the 60622 and 60642 zip codes. Initially ignored in favor of more modern toys, she waits patiently to be noticed, wondering if she will ever be loved like the others. When the wise old Skin Horse reveals the majesty and mystery of what it means to become real, the Velveteen Rabbit begins an odyssey of the heart to make a lasting connection with her boy that will endure for always. Return to a simpler time with this heartwarming story about the transformative power of love. We caught Duck for President the first time around and it was a laugh a minute antidote to somber debates and election year lies.   Sure, this is billed as a kids' show, but Lifeline's productions are so witty and wonderful, that even the adults will leave well entertained.
