Boleros, Clowns, Acrobatics, Juggling, Dance and Theatre Combine in Midwest Premiere From Chicago’s Premier Latine Theatre 

Teatro Vista, Chicago’s premier Latine theatre, today announced the cast and production team of the Midwest premiere of MEMORABILIA, created by Jean Claudio and directed by co-creator Raquel Torre, running May 30 - June 29, 2025. The production is co-presented and staged at Filament Theatre (4041 N. Milwaukee Ave.), a theatre whose focus is creating radical spaces for young people and families to play. You’re invited to experience the journey of Salvador, a frazzled inventor, who creates an apparatus to preserve his most beloved memories and maybe… just maybe, face the realities of the darker ones. With courage and foolishness, Salvador will walk you through his days of chaos, memories, and wonder. MEMORABILIA is a solo-show using old boleros, clown, acrobatics, juggling, dance, and theatre to tell a story with humor and heart.

MEMORABILIA is created and performed by renowned Chicago-based Boricua performer Jean Claudio, described by the Chicago Tribune as an “excellent circus-skilled performer” who is “funny, charming and the most poignant presence.” Claudio was recently seen in the title role of Chicago Shakespeare Theater's CORDUROY, the Goodman Theatre's LUCHA TEOTL and THE LIZARD Y EL SOL, and Teatro Vista Productions’ THE DREAM KING, winner of 8 Equity Jeff Awards. Helming the creative process as its director is co-creator Raquel Torre, who is Claudio’s partner in artistry and in life as well as the Michael Maggio Directing Fellow at the Goodman Theatre.

Lifeline Theatre’s KidSeries presents the world premiere of Leaf, based on the beloved picture book by Sandra Dieckmann, March 15 to April 20 at Lifeline Theatre, 6912 N. Glenwood Ave. Adaptor and Lifeline ensemble member Amanda Link teams up with director Nathaniel Niemi to bring audiences a timely world premiere featuring a polar bear on their quest to return home and the young crow who finds it within herself to help them. Leaf centers on our interconnectedness with each other and our planet, and the importance of sharing one’s story. 

"Adults will pick up on important themes like the dangers of climate change or fearing those who are different," says Link. "For the kids, I hope to spark their sense of wonder and awaken empathy." Link and Niemi are KidSeries regulars and have appeared in numerous Lifeline hits together, including the popular Click, Clack, Moo series. Now the pair take the reins on Link’s debut adaptation. "The vivid illustrations from the book have inspired a beautiful scenic design, inventive costuming, and dynamic puppets," says Niemi. "I can't wait for the kids to see our giant polar bear!"

Lifeline Theatre presents the Midwest premiere of Kid Prince and Pablo, a hip-hop musical based on Mark Twain’s story The Prince and the Pauper, January 3 – February 16 at Lifeline Theatre, 6912 N. Glenwood Ave. Kid Prince and Pablo, adapted by Brian Quijada with music composed by Marvin Quijada, and directed by Raquel Torre, makes its Midwest premiere after its initial run at the Kennedy Center in 2019. 

Regular performance times through February 16, are Fridays at 7:30 p.m., Saturdays at 2:30 and 7:30 p.m., and Sundays at 2:30 p.m. 

In the divided Capital City, the ruling class has banned rap and dance after an attempted revolution by the People. Kid Prince is set to inherit the throne…that is, until he meets Pablo, a drummer who performs for underground rap battles. When the two hatch a plan to switch identities, mayhem and music ensue. But by standing in each other’s shoes, Kid Prince and Pablo discover connections that could start a whole new revolution.

Broadway In Chicago is delighted to announce that CLUE, the hilarious murder mystery comedy inspired by the Hasbro board game and adapted from the fan-favorite film, is now playing at the CIBC Theatre for a limited two—week engagement through March 2 only. Described by The New York Times calls CLUE “A very funny whodunit that strikes contemporary parallels on the way to its grand reveal,” CLUE delivers a thrilling mix of comedy, mystery, and suspense at every performance.

Led by Broadway Director Casey Hushion (Associate Director of Mean Girls and The Prom, Associate Resident Director of Aladdin, choreography for the Netflix series “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt”), murder and blackmail are on the menu when six mysterious guests assemble at Boddy Manor for a night they’ll never forget! Was it Mrs. Peacock in the study with the knife? Or was it Colonel Mustard in the library with the wrench? Based on the iconic 1985 Paramount Pictures movie and inspired by the classic Hasbro board game, CLUE is the ultimate whodunit that will leave you dying of laughter and keep you guessing until the final twist. 

CLUE is based on the screenplay by Jonathan Lynn. Written by Sandy Rustin with additional material by Hunter Foster and Eric Price. It features original music by Michael Holland.

The CLUE franchise began in 1949 with the manufacture of the ‘Cluedo’ board game. Currently owned and published by Hasbro, the game has sold more than 200 million copies worldwide.  A murder-mystery comedy film by Paramount Pictures based on the board game was released in 1985 and went on to achieve cult classic status with a passionate fan base.

Here at ChiIL Mama and ChiIL Live Shows, we've long been fans of The Actors Gymnasium and their excellent shows and training programs for children through adults. Chicago is lucky to have such a fabulous resource. My own son and daughter were cast in their annual youth circus shows for years. And now my son is back and assistant stage managing for Little Red. We'll be catching this one on opening night, March 1st, so check back soon after for our full review.

The Actors Gymnasium is proud to announce LITTLE RED, an original circus theatre production created and directed by Heidi Stillman, with circus choreography by Artistic Director Sylvia Hernandez-DiStasi. The show features Kat Hoil, Madie Doppelt, Kaitlyn Andrews, Kylie Anderson, and Julie Matolo, as well as members of the Actors Gym’s Teen Ensemble.

LITTLE RED is part of Actors Gym's annual Winter Circus tradition, which is one of Chicago's most popular circus shows.

Inspired by the 17th-century fairytale, Little Red Riding Hood, LITTLE RED is a captivating movement piece exploring the thrilling and mysterious journey of Little Red facing the biggest, baddest foe of them all - The Wolf.  But who is the Wolf? And who is Little Red? Discover the answers—and the questions—in this circus tale of innocence, fear, and transformation. LITTLE RED created and directed by Heidi Stillman and Sylvia Hernandez-DiStasi coming to Actors Gym this Spring!

About the Artists

Heidi Stillman (creator, director): is a writer, director, and an ensemble member of Lookingglass Theatre Company, where she has served twice over the years as Artistic Director. Some of her favorite shows she has written and directed at Lookingglass include: Cascabel (with Tony Hernandez and Rick Bayless), Hephaestus: A Greek Mythology Circus Tale (also at The Goodman Theatre), The Brothers Karamazov, and Hard Times (also at the Arden Theatre in Philadelphia). Directing work at Lookingglass includes: Act(s) of God, Death Tax, Bengal Tiger at the Baghdad Zoo, Trust, and Hillbilly Antigone. Additional writing credits with Lookingglass include The Old Curiosity Shop and The Baron in the Trees. Heidi recently directed Morris Micklewhite and the Tangerine Dress at Childrens Theatre Company in Minneapolis. She directed Minita Gandhi’s Muthaland for Silk Road Rising, Victory Garden’s Ignition Festival, and at 16th Street Theatre. She wrote (with Caroline Macon) and directed The Year I Didn’t Go to School at Chicago Childrens Theatre. Her adaptation of The Book Thief premiered at Steppenwolf Theatre Company. Heidi lives in Evanston, and her children performed in many Winter Circuses over the years. 

Sylvia Hernandez-DiStasi (Artistic Director & Circus Choreography): is Artistic Director of The Actors Gymnasium. She also serves as master teacher and director of The Professional Circus Training Program and is a faculty member at Northwestern University’s Department of Theatre. Sylvia is a second generation circus performer who grew up touring with various circuses, including Ringling Bros and Barnum & Bailey. In 2019, she and her family, The Hernandez Troupe, were inducted into the Circus Ring of Fame for their monumental contributions to the world of circus. Sylvia is an ensemble member of the Tony Award-winning Lookingglass Theatre Company, where she has worked on over 20 productions. She has received 4 Joseph Jefferson Awards for her work with Lookingglass (Lookingglass Alice, Hard Times, Baron in the Trees) and Marriott Theatre (All Night Strut), and a total of 5 Joseph Jefferson nominations. In 2018, she won a Los Angeles Drama Critics Circle Award and a Robby Award, both for designing the acrobatic/aerial choreography of the South Coast Repertory staging of Moby Dick. Other theater credits include The Lyric Opera, Writer’s Theatre, Steppenwolf, Chicago Shakespeare Theater, Chicago Children’s Theater and The Goodman. Sylvia is the recipient of The 3Arts Award for Design (2014), and also received an Award of Honor for Outstanding Contributions by The Illinois Theater Association.

Kat Hoil (Ensemble): Kat Hoil is an award-winning, multi-disciplinary artist based in Chicago. They have worked with such companies as Chicago Shakespeare Theatre, Audacious Machine Creative, Northbrook Theatre, The Chicago Park District, Everleigh Entertainment (Chicago), The Lincoln Center (New York City), Constellation Immersive (Los Angeles), and The Grand Shanghai Theatre (Missouri)

Madie Doppelt (Ensemble): Madie Doppelt is a Chicago-based theater and circus artist who proudly calls Actors Gymnasium her artistic home. An alum of both the Teen Ensemble (2016) and Professional Training Program (2022), Madie has been in many shows on the sprung floor across the years, most recently including CIRCUS QUIXOTE (2023). Other recent acting credits include CORDUROY (Chicago Shakespeare Theatre), FEFU AND HER FRIENDS and EURYDICE (Snails on a Bike Theatre Collective), and DRY LAND (The Theatre School at DePaul University).

Kaitlyn Andrews (Ensemble): Kaitlyn is a multidisciplinary performer– while working primarily as a circus artist these days, she has over a decade of experience as an actor, clown, and theatre maker. With her theatrical background Kaitlyn has a keen eye for storytelling in her circus work. She is drawn to creating experiences that evoke reaction from her audiences, whether humorous, horrifying, or melancholic– her work carries a large range of expression. Kaitlyn is a graduate of the Theatre program at Northwestern University, and of the Professional Circus Training Program at The Actors Gymnasium where she majored in aerial rope. She is a founding and former member of BIPOC Circus Alliance (formerly BCAM). Primarily as a circus artist Kaitlyn performs aerial rope, and partner acrobatics. Previously as a theatre artist she has performed with Neo-Futurists (The Arrow, Tangles & Plaques), The Ruffians (Burning Bluebeard), and is an emeritus of PlayMakers Laboratory (That’s Weird Grandma). Recent acting credits include The Becomers which is now available for streaming. When not performing in full length shows, you can catch Kaitlyn in the air at various events around Chicago! She is so thrilled to be part of this year’s Winter Circus at Actors Gymnasium

Kylie Anderson (Ensemble): Ky Rambo (professionally: Kylie Anderson) (they/them) is a physical actor and circus artist represented by Stewart Talent. Ky is a company member at Avalanche Theatre and a founding company member at Bramble Theatre Company but has worked with a medley of other theaters in Chicago including Redtwist, Remmy Bumppo, Steppenwolf, and Lookingglass Theatre. Ky has a BFA in Drama with an emphasis in Acting from the University of Oklahoma, but has also trained at Stella Adler’s Studio in New York City, NY for physical theatre, attended the School at Steppenwolf (class of 2019) in Chicago, IL, and you might have even seen them here at The Actor’s Gym, having studied aerial arts and clown in the Pro Training class of 2021 and 2024. Excited to make their Actor’s Gymnasium Circus School and THEATRE COMPANY debut alongside their talented friends, Ky would like to thank their husband Austin, their mom Carol, and literally anyone and everyone who has ever encouraged them to keep chasing their dreams. 

Julie Matolo (Ensemble): Julie Matolo (she/her) is an accomplished dancer, acrobat, aerialist, stunt performer, actor, choreographer and teaching artist. She is based out of California and Chicago. Her artistic goals have led her to travel, tour and perform in the majority of our fifty states, in addition to Canada, Brazil, Uruguay, Argentina and throughout Europe.

Here at ChiIL Mama we love to learn about the First People or First Nations of our country. As modern Americans, we have so much to improve on when it comes to sustainable practices, how to steward natural resources, respect for our elders, and more. It was a joy to learn more traditional Anishinaabe lifeways through Skeleton Canoe, via puppetry, projection work, drumming, and dance. This creative show captivated our imaginations and inspired us to do better.

Of course this production is nowhere near as elaborate as Ajijaak on Turtle Island, Chicago Puppet Festival’s unforgettable opening production in 2019, that Ty Defoe wrote and co-created with Heather Henson. We were absolutely blown away by that show! Skeleton Canoe has a lower budget and plays more like an edutainment show for schools to book. Still, there's something to say for a much more intimate production. 

This one plays out more like myth and storytelling directly to the audience, rather than a large scale performance. I caught a work-in-progress version of Skeleton Canoe two years ago as part of the Chicago Puppet Festival, so it was interesting to see its evoloution. Defoe will take the now-finished puppet play on a national tour after this Chicago run. Don't miss this visual delight with a strong eco friendly message. Recommended.

Young Nawbin leaves home and sets out on a rite of passage. They journey along the water to discover their truth and find a way back to reconnect to themselves and ancestral knowledge. Along the way they discover unexpected friends, weather storms, and gain a canoe! Through the use of puppetry, traditional Anishinaabe lifeways, and multimedia design, Skeleton Canoe makes known what is just below the water’s surface.

Skeleton Canoe marks the Chicago return of Ty Defoe, a Grammy-winning writer, actor and interdisciplinary artist of the Oneida and Ojibwe Nations of Wisconsin, who wrote and co-created Ajijaak on Turtle Island with Heather Henson, the festival’s unforgettable opening production in 2019. Defoe also workshopped Skeleton Canoe two years ago as part of the Chicago Puppet Festival, and will take the now-finished puppet play on a national tour after this Chicago run. 

Defoe learned to hoop dance, eagle dance and play a variety of wooden flutes during visits in community. Skeleton Crew is one of more than 120 shows and special events that are part of the 7th Chicago International Puppet Theater Festival, January 15-26, 2025. The 2025 Chicago Puppet Fest is the largest event of its kind in North America, spanning 12 days and dozens of Chicago venues, presenting  an international pageant of puppet artists in all-ages spectacle shows in landmark theaters, intimate works on smaller stages, and late night puppet cabarets. Going to the theatre just got a little bit easier for parents and caregivers. Parents and caregivers can see the 3pm matinee of the production while their young ones engage in active creative play with WT Education’s professional teaching artists.

Iconic Mexican painter Frida Kahlo was a woman who lived boldly, loved wildly, and painted prolifically in order to see herself and the world around her more clearly. Witness this extraordinary figure come to life onstage through playwright and performer Vanessa Severo, who brings breathtaking physicality and raw honesty to this stunningly creative production. With music and movement, Vanessa cracks open a powerful portal between herself and Frida, uncovering insights into the painter’s physical limitations, complex love life, addictions, and, of course, the beauty in her art. 

• Several of Frida Kahlo's iconic paintings are referenced and evoked in the staging and design of the play, including Frieda and Diego Rivera (1931), The Broken Column (1944), Self Portrait in a Velvet Dress (1926), Memory, the Heart (1937), The Two Fridas (1939), and Self Portrait with Cropped Hair (1940).

Artistic Director Braden Abraham comments, “Vanessa and Joanie have crafted an intimate theatrical experience that transcends the traditional stage biography, creating a rich tapestry that honors Kahlo's complex legacy while simultaneously exploring the universal themes of identity, pain, and artistic expression.”

• La Casa Azul, the Kahlo family home in Coyacán, Mexico City, Mexico, became the Museo Frida Kahlo in 1958. It is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Mexico City.

In an interview with Cincinnati Playhouse, Vanessa Savero explained, "The concept of self-portraiture is such a tricky and blurred presentation today. In a world of selfies, filters and displaying our ‘best lives’ on social media, we have lost the concept of what real expression is. In looking at Frida Kahlo’s self portraits, we find a woman unapologetically showing her pain and her current state of being. It can be uncomfortable and also unnerving for the viewer, yet on the other hand, we see something in ourselves relating to her state of being. When I decided to write Frida...A Self Portrait, I found that I could not just tell her story without telling my own. I had to present my own self portrait in order to honestly connect with hers." 

• Frida…A Self Portrait arrives at Writers Theatre for its seventh full-length production, after acclaimed runs in Indianapolis, Rochester, NY, Pittsburgh, Cincinnati, Portland, OR, and Kansas City.

Frida…A Self Portrait has been touring to theatre companies across the country to rave reviews. It has previously played at Indiana Repertory Theatre, GEVA Theatre Center, Pittsburgh Public Theater, Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park, Portland Center Stage, and Kansas City Repertory Theatre.

Vanessa Severo (Writer / Performer) Vanessa has studied at Missouri State University, as well as The American Conservatory Theatre, San Francisco. She is the recipient of the TCG 11th Round of the Fox Foundation resident Actor Fellowships, 2017, including the Carlsbad, CA Artist in Residency, 2022, as well as the winner of Dramatist Guild Grant 2022. She is certified in Suzuki Method, and Viewpoints under the instruction of Ellen Lauren, SITI Company. She is the playwright and actor of Frida...A Self Portrait (2020 Kilroys List). Other original works include: Dracula (World Premiere at Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park, 2024), Rubik (World Premiere, Spinning Tree Theatre, 2024), Sueno de Agua (World Premiere, Kansas City Repertory Theater 2022). • Severo performed a shorter version of the play several times starting in 2014. A fellowship from Theatre Communications Group allowed her to travel to Mexico City and further research Kahlo's life. Joanie Schultz subsequently began collaborating with Severo as director, and the new full-length version of Frida had its world premiere at Kansas City Repertory Theatre in 2019.

Joanie Schultz (Director) currently serves as Associate Artistic Director of Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park. Her work has been seen in Chicago and regional theatres including The Goodman Theatre, Steppenwolf Theatre, Victory Gardens Theater, Steep Theatre, Remy Bumppo, Portland Center Stage, Pittsburgh Public Theatre, Everyman Theatre, Kansas City Repertory Theatre, Studio Theatre, The Cleveland Play House, GEVA Theater Center, Indiana Repertory Theatre, LaJolla Playhouse, and Philadelphia Theatre Company. She has directed and assistant directed opera from the site specific to the grand stage with Chicago Opera Theater, the Bayview Music Festival, the Chicago Cultural Center, and New Millennium Orchestra. In 2017-18, Joanie was Artistic Director of WaterTower Theatre in Dallas, Texas, where she produced new and inclusive programming from community partnerships to world premiere plays. Prior to that, Joanie served as Associate Artistic Producer at Victory Gardens Theater, as part of the TCG/Mellon Foundation Leadership U One-on-One Fellowship. She was also a Drama League Fellow; The Goodman Theatre Michael Maggio Director Fellow; the SDSF Denham Fellow; and member of the Lincoln Center Theatre Directors Lab. She is an ensemble member at Steep Theatre Company and an artistic cabinet member at Studio Theatre in Washington DC. Joanie has taught through her own studio, Steep Theatre, and Steppenwolf Theatre, along with Columbia College Chicago, University of Chicago, Northwestern University, and Roosevelt University. She holds a B.A. in Theater Directing from Columbia College Chicago and an M.F.A. in Theater Directing from Northwestern University.
