Of Narwhals, Medals and Mash Notes #FamilyTraditions #Gymnastics

I didn't know if my kids would think I was queen of the dorks for my limerick, but Sage really dug it.   She read it over and over till she memorized it, and got a big kick out of the verse.   She even said "Mom... how did you just make that up?" with a bit of awe in her voice.   It came easy because I've been in awe of her for years.

My blue ribbon baby is at it again.   She placed first in bars, beam, and all around at Peterson.   This was her 2nd All Around Win in a row for level 4, 10 year old girls.   Next stop... state!

We have a family tradition of leaving fridge notes for each other on a magnetic tablet.   There are two pads/pens and it's fun to leave affirming notes & funny art for special occasions or no reason at all.

You don't have to be a writer or a great artist to rock mash notes to your kids. It truly is the thought that counts.

I've also continued my own mom's tradition of lunchbox napkin notes.  We snap photos to save them as a quick, visual journal of lunches and lives.   These "mash notes" are full of love for my kids and celebrate their unique personalities, triumphs, and fun family plans we have together.

Not a natural artist or writer?   No problem.   Sometimes the kids get the biggest laugh and the most joy out of the simplest things.   The point is that you took the time to personalize something to them.

How do you celebrate each other and life's little victories?

#bareselfie

Before you get too excited... or horrified... by bare, we're talkin' bare face and arms people.   As in, without makeup.

If you stumbled here by accident by searching out #bareselfie ... BUSTED.   I'm not an indiscreet high school girl or a film star.   I'm a middle aged mom.

Now for the rest of you...

Disclosure:   Thanks to Lancome and SheSpeaksUp for providing me with a complimentary sample to review.   As always, all opinions are my own.

Makeup free me... #bareselfie.

I go au naturale most of the time, unless I'm going to a fancy premier or I know my mug will end up on TV.   I don't want to hide under a bunch of makeup.   So I've been a little bummed out to see growing age spots multiplying like mega freckles and splotchy sun tan patches now that I'm 46.   And boy do they show up on my pale skin!

I've been trying out a complimentary sample of Lancome's NEW DreamTone Customized Skin Tone Correcting Serum 2x a day and today I'm reporting back to you on my results.   My skin is glowing, more even, and my dark spots have noticeably faded.   And extra bonus, it smells great too!

BUY IT & TRY IT YOURSELF:  Lancôme DreamTone is $98 for a 1.3 fl oz. bottle at department stores or Lancôme.com.

Before and After Arm Shots:
Apologies, the lighting is a bit different.   My husband wasn't around to shoot the second one, so I had to do an arm selfie, too.   There is a marked visible difference in person, though.

I was elated to be chosen to review Lancome's new DreamTone Customized Skin Tone Correcting Serum and be part of their #bareselfie movement.

#Hashtag

Pound key... number sign... hashtag... An octothorpe by any other name would sort as sweet!

"Call it hash tag hash tag," my 12 year old son quipped, about this post.

If you want to sound like a brainiac and truly impress, break out the bonus points, 3 syllable word for that ubiquitous little sign-- octothorpe... reputed to literally mean 8 fields.   The mysterious octothorpe is of unknown origin according to Webster's dictionary, and it's first known use was in 1971. Wikipedia claims it was originally a mapmaking symbol denoting a village surrounded by... yep, 8 fields.

"When did it stop being the pound sign?   Who renamed it and why?" retorted my luddite husband.

"What's a pound sign?" the 10 year old chimed in.

My husband replied, "It used to be a symbol on touch tone phones when they first changed from dials, and when the idea of push button banking and automated menus was new.  But I don't get why it got renamed.   It's still a pound sign to me... not a hashtag (spoken with dripping disdain)."

The voice of reason spoke (that would be me).  "Before that even, it was commonly know as number sign, as in, we're #1. If you're going to get all huffy about pound vs. hashtag linguistics, why did it get renamed pound key instead of just sticking with number sign for a name, eh? Maybe the title's an escalation in rank."

Now, little ol' number sign's been promoted to hashtag, darling of social media and really is #1 -- grand poobah of powerful punctuation.

"I'm trending on Twitter" my husband is fond of blurting out at random inappropriate times, which is all the more amusing because he's the anti-twit if there ever was one.  He DOES actually have a Twitter account I set up for him, but I think the crickets are audibly chirping on his blank page.   If he were actually "TRENDING ON TWITTER" it would all be due to the octothorpe.

"But I don't get it.   Why do people hashtag EVERYTHING?   What's the point?" asked my son who knew the term octothorpe, but has no clue what they DO.

In case you're confounded by the pound sign, or preoccupied by the octothorpe, too, here's the scoop.

"They spawn comedy... annoy people.   But seriously, it's also like a giant sorting work. Hashtags make social media posts go places.   They make posts pop on the Twitter feeds & Facebook pages of those they refer to, make our glut of on line info into some semblance of searchable order, and keep event posts flowing in the same stream of quantifiable data."   As annoying as they may be, they are crucial to my line of work in social media and once people "get" how to use them it makes a LOT of sense.

Media Bistro has a pretty cool summation here too.   Click this link for the full deal.  I've put an excerpt below.
The hashtag as we know it was born in August 2007, when designer Chris Messina, the self-described “hash godfather,” asked his Twitter followers what they thought of using the pound sign to group conversations on Twitter.
Six years later, hashtags are completely integral to social media, having spread beyond Twitter to Facebook, Google+, Pinterest, Instagram and even farther (including real-world conversations). Hashtags add context, humor, organization and the potential for virality to your tweets.
But what was the life of the hashtag before Twitter made it famous?
The following infographic created by graphic designer Angela Liao of 20px depicts the journey of the hashtag pre-Twitter.

We'll leave you with a YouTube clip of #Hashtag from Late Night with Jimmy Fallon.

Love it or hate it, the octothorpe has infiltrated our society, and this most powerful of punctuations is here to stay!

A Fond Farewell To Frog & Toad and Welcome Mr. Chickee's Funny Money at Chicago Childrens Theatre #MrChickee

It seems like only yesterday that this charming amphibian buddy production was opening!   A year with Frog & Toad will always hold a special place in our hearts as it was the first CCT production we ever saw, waaaaaay back in the day when my tweens were toddlers.   And they still loved the remount at ages 10 & 12.   That's saying something!   Please tell me it won't be 8 more years till we get to see this charming tale told again on the CCT stage.   Even if it is, I WILL be there to see it again with my college kids!   This show is timeless fun for "kids" of all ages.

Watching my kids grow up with the stellar Chicago theatre scene has made my soul melt.   Of course their take on show has grown from their uber adorable young years where songs and lines and characters from shows made it into their free play and made me laugh.   Now they're recognizing actors across different productions and offering solid critiques on shows, set design and plots.   Joy!

Then there's the inimitable Ada Grey, kid critic.   We run into this articulate, creative 9 year old EVERYWHERE.   We recently ran into her at The House Theatre's Nutcracker, The Chicago Children's Film Festival and Once.

She also acts & was the compelling creepy little girl in The Stag King at The House Theatre.   When we recently saw her at The Oriental Theatre, I told her that her intense Stag King performance with her real life dad completely creeped me out, and that I meant that as the highest compliment. Check out her awesome theatre review blog here.   She's been critiquing shows since she was 4!

Here's my daughter, Sage (10) and Ada (9) hangin' out at the after party on the opening night of Frog & Toad.

Fun Memories:  A year with Frog & Toad snacks n crafts at the opening night after party.

Frog and Toad themed crafts brought out the kids' creative side and tasty treats made the night complete.

We'll be thinking about Frog & Toad's catchy eating cookies number any time we indulge.

A big thumbs up for Chicago Childrens Theatre!

We'll leave you with this clip from A year with Frog & Toad, just for fun.  Hope you got to go!

We'll miss you wacky amphibians!

(from left) Frog (Karl Hamilton) and Toad (Mark David Kaplan) go on a wild sledding adventure in Chicago Children’s Theatre’s A Year with Frog and Toad.

A Year with Frog and Toad is the Tony-nominated musical based on Arnold Lobel’s beloved Frog and Toad books. Lobel’s well-loved animal characters jump from the page to the stage in this whimsical musical that follows two best friends – the cheerful, popular Frog and the rather grumpy Toad – through four, fun-filled seasons. Part vaudeville, part make believe, all charm, A Year with Frog and Toad tells the story of a friendship that endures, weathering all seasons.

CCT's version of Jackie and Me has since received productions at Children's Theatre Company in Minneapolis, New York's Atlantic Theatre Company, and in Seattle, Houston and St. Louis. The script was recently published by Dramatic Publishing.

ACT OUT HOLIDAY: A Q BROTHERS’ CHRISTMAS CAROL NOVEMBER 30–DECEMBER 22, 2013 (ages 12+)

CHICAGO SHAKESPEARE THEATER INVITES AUDIENCES

TO A SNEAK PREVIEW OF A NEW WORK-IN-PROGRESS

A Q BROTHERS’ CHRISTMAS CAROL
NOVEMBER 30–DECEMBER 22, 2013
Othello: The Remix Featured at Sydney Festival January 2014

ChiIL out with Jeff Award winning Chi-town favorites, The Q Brothers!  They've infused Shakespeare and other classics with fresh new breath and engaged a younger audience with edgier productions, hip-hop and comedic genius.   We can't wait to see their take on A Christmas Carol!

Chicago Shakespeare Theater (CST) and hip-hop sensations the Q Brothers are back at it again turning up the volume with a fresh take on a beloved classic. The Q Brothers and CST Creative Producer Rick Boynton have come together to develop A Q Brothers’ Christmas Carol—a hip-hop reinterpretation of the perennial holiday favorite by Charles Dickens. Now, alongside Chicago theaters’ familiar renditions of this heartwarming tale, audiences will participate in the creation of an energized, reinvented tradition. Work-in-progress performances of A Q Brothers’ Christmas Carol will run in the theater Upstairs at Chicago Shakespeare, November 30–December 22, 2013.

A Q Brothers’ Christmas Carol is being created between stops of the Q Brothers’ international whirlwind tour of the award-winning Othello: The Remix, which will travel to Australia in January to be featured in the line-up of the highly regarded Sydney Festival 2014. Premiering at Shakespeare’s Globe for the London 2012 Cultural Olympiad’s ‘Globe to Globe’ festival, Othello: The Remix has toured to festival venues around the world, playing to sold-out houses of multi-generational and culturally diverse audiences in Edinburgh, Germany, South Korea and London. Its extended five-month Chicago engagement broke records for Chicago Shakespeare’s longstanding CST for $20 program for patrons under 35 years of age.

Written and performed by GQ, JQ, Jackson Doran and Postell Pringle, A Q Brothers’ Christmas Carol takes on the cherished holiday tale and wrestles it from its sacred roots with irreverence, an array of music styles, and a lot of heart. Just as hip-hop borrows from many genres, the story will be underscored with beats spun live by DJ Super Nova at the turntables, mashing up everything from reggae and dancehall music, to futuristic dubstep and epic rock ballads. Audiences will recognize familiar characters like Ebenezer Scrooge with his erotic passion for money, a Jamaican Jacob Marley, and the most pitiful Cratchit, Lil’ Tim. The time-traveling Ghosts take Scrooge on a voyage through the hip-hop ages–decade by decade from past to present to future–documenting the still-evolving musical art form. This new holiday treat will prove to be as cheeky, intelligent and street smart as audiences have come to expect from the Q Brothers.

A Q Brothers’ Christmas Carol design team includes Scenic and Costume Designer Scott Davis, Lighting Designer Jesse Klug and Wig and Make-up Designer Melissa Veal. Properties Master Amy Peter and Choreographer Anacron complete the creative team. Written by GQ, JQ, Jackson Doran and Postell Pringle and developed with Rick Boynton, A Q Brothers’ Christmas Carol is presented in association with Richard Jordan Productions Ltd.

What time is it? It's PAJAMA TIME this weekend!

The days grow shorter, the nights longer, and on these cool November weekends we love to stay in our cozy Pajamas all day long.

So this month @ the Disco we will be celebrating cozy, snuggly, comfort with our annual PAJAMA PARTY!

Wake up and stay in your PJs - parents and kids alike, bring your coziest, your feetiest and any accessories to boot (snuggles, blankies, etc.)   We'll be dancing all day and stick with the morning theme serving bagels, fruit and an old school sugary cereal bar too (sorry mom - fruity pebbles do have SOME fruit in them ;)   Plus - activities such as arts & crafts, face-painting, temporary tattoos, family photo booth and much much more - it's Baby Loves Disco, the original family dance party for kids 10 months to 10 years.

See you at the disco

Come join hundreds of thousands of kids aged six months to six years, dancing their little booties off (to real disco music!) at some of the coolest clubs in the world while their parents sip cocktails, munch on organic snacks and dance along with their kids.  Baby Loves Disco is an afternoon dance party featuring real music spun and mixed by real DJs blending classic disco tunes from the 70s & 80s guaranteed to get those little booties moving and grooving. The fun spills out from all corners of the club: bubble machines, egg shakers, a chill-out room (with tents, books and puzzles), diaper changing stations, a full spread of healthy snacks and dancing…LOTS of dancing.

Tickets are available at www.LincolnHallChicago.com and are $15 for one, $50 for a four-ticket family pack, FREE for non-walkers. If purchasing the four ticket family pack, please note that one ticket will cover entry for four people.

Tickets: $15 for one (1), $55 for four (4) ticket family pack, FREE for non-walkers. If purchasing the four (4) ticket family pack, please note that one (1) ticket will cover entry for four (4) people.
Baby Loves Disco transforms the world’s coolest nightclubs into child-proof discos.

Make no mistake, this is not the Mickey Mouse Club, and Barney is banned. Baby Loves Disco is an afternoon dance party featuring real music spun and mixed by real DJs blending classic disco tunes from the 70s & 80s guaranteed to get those little booties moving and grooving.
