OPENING: 75th Anniversary Production of Oklahoma at Marriott Theatre Now Extended Through June 10th, 2018

Chi IL Live Shows On Our Radar:

Terry James, Executive Producer
Aaron Thielen, Lead Artistic Director
Andy Hite, Artistic Director

PRESENTS THE 75th ANNIVERSARY PRODUCTION
NOW EXTENDED THRU JUNE 10TH!

I'll be ChiILin' just north of Chi, IL, in Lincolnshire, for the press opening of Oklahoma on April 18th, so check back soon for my full review. During my childhood, I remember seeing several high school productions of Oklahoma, and I can't believe it's been around for 75 years! I'm eager to see Marriott Theatre's professional take on this classic. It's sure to be a crowd pleaser. They haven't opened yet and sales have been so brisk they've already extended a week. Get tickets while you can!

From the sun baked Oklahoma Territory at the turn of the 20th century comes the Broadway classic, Oklahoma!, beginning April 11th at 10 Marriott Drive, Lincolnshire. Due to high demand, an additional week is now on sale through June 10. Featuring a powerful score by legendary duo Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II, and based on Lynn Riggs’ 1931 play, Green Grow the Lilacs, Oklahoma! will be directed by Artistic Director and Jeff Award-winner Aaron Thielen (She Loves Me, Spring Awakening). Jeff Award nominee Alex Sanchez (Marriott Theatre: Newsies, Evita, On the Town, Mary Poppins) will choreograph, with Musical Direction and orchestrations by Jeff Award winner Ryan T. Nelson.

Breaking all Broadway box office records when it opened in 1943, Oklahoma! was the first collaboration between Rodgers and Hammerstein - the team who went on to create Carousel, South Pacific, The King and I and The Sound of Music. Set in a Western Indian territory just after the turn of the century, Oklahoma! is the tale of the farm girl, Laurey, and the handsome cowboy, Curly. As they struggle to start a brand new life in a brand new state, Laurey learns what it means to follow her heart no matter the consequences.

Marriott Theatre proudly presents the 75th anniversary of Oklahoma! after their last production celebrated the show’s 50th anniversary.  Ted Chapin, head of the Rodgers and Hammerstein Organization, notes “R&H Theatricals has had a long and great history of working with Marriott Theatre. We have always counted on them to honor the legacy of the R&H classics by showing their audiences the power of what Rodgers and Hammerstein have written.”

Oklahoma! stars Jennie Sophia as “Laurey” (Goodman Theatre: Brigadoon; Drury Lane Theatre: Les Misérables,  Oliver), Brandon Springman as “Curly” (Marriott Theatre: The Bridges of Madison County, She Loves Me, Singin’ in the Rain), Susan Moniz as “Aunt Eller” (Marriott Theatre: October Sky, La Cage aux Folles, Mary Poppins; Broadway/National Tours: Fun Home, Grease), Shea Coffman as “Jud Fry” (Marriott Theatre: Ragtime, Newsies, The Bridges of Madison County), Michelle Lauto as “Ado Annie Carnes” (Marriott Theatre: Ragtime; Royal George Theatre: Spamilton), Aaron Umsted as “Will Parker” (National Tours: Anything Goes, Mary Poppins, A Chorus Line), Ninos Baba as “Ali Hakim” (About Face Theatre: Significant Other and I Am My Own Wife, American Players Theatre: King Lear, Death of a Salesman, The Comedy of Errors), and Terry Hamilton as “Andrew Carnes,” Evan Tyrone Martin as “Ike Skidmore,” Elizabeth Telford as “Gertie Cummings”, Benita Bünger as “Dream Laurey,” Lucas Segovia as “Dream Curly,” with Brandon Block, Miranda Borkan, DeShawn Bowens, Nick Cosgrove, Maxwell J DeTogne, Alejandro Fonseca, Noah Gouldsmith, Autumn Hlava, Maya Lou Hlava, Johanna McKenzie Miller, Madison Piner, Zachary Porter, Ken Singleton, Kyra Sorce, Adrienne Storrs, Steven Strafford and Jessica Wolfrum.

The production will feature set design by Kevin Depinet, projection design by Anthony Churchill, costume design by Brian Hemesath, lighting design by Jesse Klug, sound design by Robert E. Gilmartin, properties design by Sally Weiss, and musical supervision and orchestra conducted by Patti Garwood.

The performance schedule for Oklahoma! is Wednesdays at 1:00 p.m. and 7:30 p.m., Thursdays at 7:30 p.m., Fridays at 8:00 p.m., Saturdays at 3:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m., Sundays at 1:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m., with select Thursday 1:00 p.m. shows. THIS WEEKEND ONLY: Pop In at MCA's 1979 Pop Up in Wicker Park for FREE T's, Discounted Museum Admission and More...

ChiIL Mama's Chi, IL Picks List:

Pop Culture Pop Up
1979's Calling!

Whether you remember the late 70's (yes, I was 12 in 79), or just wish you did, come discover why the music, art, pop culture, protest politics and more, still resonate today. It was my great pleasure to pop in to 1330 N. Milwaukee Avenue during Friday's sneak peek for the press and I highly recommend a stop for some 70's style fun, a free t-shirt, and free buttons that will give you admission to the MCA at 1979 prices. Check it out! Then head downtown to the museum for an in depth look at our collective past. You don't need to track down Dr. Who and his time machine Tardis to visit 1979. Chicago's Museum of Contemporary Art's got you covered through May 20th.

From XTC to Etch A Sketch... Sex Pistols to Star Wars, 1979 had it all. I was thrilled to see Joy Division and so many other favorites lining the walls. Check out my full set of Pop Up shots in the slideshow here and more favs embedded below:

MADE YOU LOOK
MCA Launches First Major Advertising Campaign
in 20 Years with Ad Agency FCB
Featuring the MCA's First-Ever Pop-Up Experience
Inspired By the Howardena Pindell Exhibition

This weekend, the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago officially launches MADE YOU LOOK, the first major advertising campaign for the museum in 20 years. The launch is in conjunction with the MCA's first-ever pop-up experience dedicated to the work of groundbreaking artist Howardena Pindell, whose retrospective is currently on view at the museum.

This free, two-day pop-up experience takes as its theme the year 1979, which was a pivotal time in Pindell's life and work. Attendees can interact with and experience the music, art and pop culture of 1979, created by advertising agency FCB Chicago. The pop-up event takes place on Saturday, April 7 (10 am to 5 pm), and Sunday, April 8 (noon to 5 pm), at 1330 N Milwaukee Avenue in Chicago.

The Made You Look campaign was created to re-introduce the museum after a highly regarded major redesign of the building by architects Johnston Marklee that blurs the boundaries between art, food, design, and learning. The redesign includes a new, world-class restaurant, Marisol, with an immersive art environment by Chris Ofili; and a new social engagement space, the Commons, with a design by Mexican design duo Pedro y Juana. The museum also added two enormous new "MCA" signs in soft yellow lights on the front of the building, signaling a renewed welcome to the city.

Yes, I grew up in a living room with a crushed velvet sofa the color of the rug below, gold wall to wall shag carpet, and a TV as wide as it was tall. Snap a selfie in a pre-Snapchat world.

Made You Look is a fully integrated campaign that leverages immersive storytelling across digital, social, and print to re-introduce the MCA to new and returning visitors. One of the highlights of this campaign is a series of six-second, high-energy, high-impact videos that make people stop and think about what they are seeing. These lively and engaging videos present a selection of powerful images and text with a playful spirit that reflect the creative and stimulating experience offered at the MCA. The museum partnered with the Chicago office of FCB, an Interpublic Group global creative ad agency, to help translate the museum's vision into this exciting new campaign and bring to life one of its current exhibitions with the 1979 pop-up.

About the Pindell Pop-Up Experience
The experiential nature of the Made You Look campaign kicks off with the Pindell Pop-Up Experience, located in a storefront at 1330 N Milwaukee which is open this weekend ONLY (Saturday, 10 am-5 pm and Sunday, noon-5 pm) and is free to all visitors. Based on the work and inspiration from the Howardena Pindell exhibition, this pop-up experience offers a blend of art, music, fashion and fun centered around the pivotal year 1979. Visitors can discover augmented reality viewfinders, throwback video games such as Space Invaders, a record vinyl wall, a Walkman listening station and a Pindell-inspired wall mural made for selfies. Visitors can also read through comics and magazines from the 1970s, and get a complimentary screen-printed T-shirt with legendary quotes from Howardena Pindell that are still relevant today.

About Howardena Pindell
The Howardena Pindell exhibition at the MCA runs until May 20, and spans the artist's acclaimed, five-decades-long career. Tracing the themes and visual experiments that run throughout Pindell's work, the exhibition shows how she challenged the traditional art world and asserted her place in its history as an African-American woman artist. Pindell revolutionized painting from her early, radical explorations of color and shape to her later work that expanded to address human rights injustices such as war, famine, homelessness, racism, and the AIDs crisis. Howardena Pindell: What Remains To Be Seen is co-curated by MCA Curator Naomi Beckwith and Valerie Cassel Oliver, Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts.

OPENING: Tony Award-nominated musical GRAND HOTEL Via Kokandy Productions At Theater Wit 4/15/18-5/27/18

Adult Night Out
Chi IL Live Shows On Our Radar:

Kokandy Productions Presents
GRAND HOTEL

Book by Luther Davis
Music and Lyrics by Robert Wright & George Forrest
Additional Music and Lyrics by Maury Yeston
Directed by John D. Glover
Music Direction by Aaron Benham
Choreography by Brenda Didier

April 15 – May 27, 2018 at Theater Wit

We can't wait to ChiIL out with Chi, IL's Kokandy Productions once again, for the press opening of their latest, the Tony Award-nominated musical, GRAND HOTEL, on April 21st. They're at one of our favorite multistage storefronts, Theater Wit, in the Belmont Theatre District. Check back soon for my full review.

Kokandy Productions is pleased to present the final production of its fifth anniversary season: the Tony Award-nominated musical GRAND HOTEL, playing April 15 – May 27, 2018 at Theater Wit, 1229 W. Belmont Ave. in Chicago. Featuring a book by Luther Davis, music and lyrics by Robert Wright and George Forrest and additional music and lyrics by Maury Yeston, the Kokandy production will be directed by Artistic Producer John D. Glover, with music direction by Aaron Benham and choreography by Brenda Didier. Single tickets are currently available at www.kokandyproductions.com, by calling (773) 975-8150 or in person at the Theater Wit Box Office.

GRAND HOTEL will feature Michelle Jasso as Elizaveta Grushinskaya, Jonathan Schwart as Otto Kringelein, Leryn Turlington as Flaemmchen, Jeremy Trager as Herman Preysing, Erik Dohner as Baron Felix von Gaigern, Jerry M. Miller as Colonel-Doctor Otternschlag and Liz Norton as Raffaela with Nick Arcero, Parker Guidry, Daniel Hurst, Jennifer Ledesma, Jenny McPherson, Hanah Rose Nardone, Darren Patin, Shea Pender, Jeff Pierpoint, Pavi Proczko, Maurice Randle, Rachel Whyte and Travis Austin Wright.

It is 1928. The world is between wars, the stock market is booming, Berlin is the center of high life and optimism rules the day. Underneath it all, much is happening at the elegant Grand Hotel, where the lives  of its eccentric guests intersect over one defining weekend: a fading prima ballerina; a fatally ill Jewish bookkeeper who wants to spend his final days living in luxury; a young, handsome, but destitute Baron; a cynical doctor; an honest businessman gone bad and a typist dreaming of Hollywood success. Based on Vicki Baum's 1928 play and novel Menschen im Hotel (People in a Hotel) and the subsequent 1932 MGM feature film, issues of life and death, financial ruin, love and murder all converge as people come and go through the lobby of the Grand Hotel.

“The themes of isolationism, broken dreams and cultural differences form the central messages of the Grand Hotel – messages that are all too relevant in our nation’s current social and political climate,” comments director John D. Glover. “My vision is to create a ‘vanished luxury’ and the fever dreams of a world on the brink of depression and war and to illuminate for the theater-goer the harsh realities of each of these characters’ journeys. Especially now, the truth is more important than ever. In the musical, Otto Kringelein concludes that ‘life resides in people, not places.’ The hotel may be grand, but as the director, my job is to ensure we genuinely care about the people who venture through the revolving door….”

The production team for GRAND HOTEL includes Jeffrey D. Kmiec (scenic design), John Nasca (costume design), Alexander Ridgers (lighting design), Michael Patrick (sound design), Johnny Buranosky (props design, asst. director), Eva Breneman (dialect coach), Rachel Flesher (violence and intimacy choreography), Keith Ryan (hair and wig design), Brian Estep (asst. costume design), Cam Turner (asst. choreographer), Lindsay Brown (production manager), Lina Benich (stage manager) and Zach Barr (asst. stage manage).

CORTEO, which means cortege in Italian, is a joyous procession, a festive parade imagined by a clown. The show brings together the passion of the actor with the grace and power of the acrobat to plunge the audience into a theatrical world of fun, comedy and spontaneity situated in a mysterious space between heaven and earth.

The clown pictures his own funeral taking place in a carnival atmosphere, watched over by quietly caring angels. Juxtaposing the large with the small, the ridiculous with the tragic and the magic of perfection with the charm of imperfection, the show highlights the strength and fragility of the clown, as well as his wisdom and kindness, to illustrate the portion of humanity that is within each of us. The music, by turns lyrical and playful, carries CORTEO through a timeless celebration in which illusion teases reality.
